Interesting question. The seeds were planted in s1 that Nate could be a spiteful, petty tyrant. But overall his storyline looked like “ignored low-level worker gets recognized.” If the show hadn’t been renewed, it would have ended on that heartwarming note. It’s hard to say whether the writers were conscious of the potential Nate story from the start or whether they dug around to look for conflict to deepen the storylines for s2-3 (Nate’s spite and Ted’s relentless cheer masking his pain, on top of more Rupert machinations).

TDS 3.0: Season Seven Talk
ahisma replied to possibilities's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
It was mixed for me. When she was laughing at the “erotic” MLK/CSK statue or accosting white people on the street about their MLK Day plans, it was fun. When she went on and on and on with that correspondent on the chicken farm it was just unfunny. When she explained why she supports Planned Parenthood, it was powerful. I like Leslie, but she definitely needs the right material. -
Late Night With Seth Meyers - General Discussion
ahisma replied to Words's topic in Late Night With Seth Meyers
I’m usually just okay with Jokes Seth Can’t Tell, but this one was hilarious! Mostly I loved how much they were cracking themselves and each other up. And the more meta Seth gets about his show, the more I love it—lamp shading the rule of threes, subverting expectations. Also why Corrections is my favorite! -
The science that is coming out about the effects of solitary confinement makes me really worried about this — Danny’s not that sane to begin with. On the other hand, I can see why no one wants him around. No-win situation.

Well, everybody, really. Dev had to get there before the government agencies (too fast to build a second lander). NASA and the Russians had to shortcut their development processes to beat Dev. Kudos to the individuals who were willing to sacrifice when necessary to save lives, but everyone has been slipshod in the race for first.

Unfortunately that’s not the way abuse works. JP was a master gaslighter who got Grace twisted around every time she thought he might be in the wrong. I’m sure it was something like, “It was raining heavily and poor Bibi got hysterical. Perfectly understandable after what happened to your parents. But then she grabbed the wheel and the accident happened.” The sisters, of course, would see right through it, but how could they convince Grace that her husband was an actual monster? Bibi and the rest had the choice to either try to keep a lifeline available to their sister or allow Grace to be further isolated by him.
-
Maybe there was life insurance on his mother, too? Not a huge, “support a widow and minor child” amount, but enough to cover funeral expenses. Maybe the accident with Bibi, but I thought that was further back, too. Or maybe the fourth claim is the one for JP’s death—he said “the family” had 4 claims in the past year, not JP personally.

Wouldn’t it have been Partner? Mole signs in Russian asset as a defector? For that matter, I wonder how much of MI5 deciding that Cicadas were a diversion, not real, was Partner’s work.

Although Draco would already be going to the best tailor …

And one of my favorite scenes in s1 was Standish popping across the street to use the pay phone (do they really still have those?) to get real intel, while the rest of the team were moping around in the all-night diner. She really does just get on with it, even when “on with it” is 50 storeys of stairs.

Well, I’d say everyone in Slough House screws up (River assumed the husband was the sleeper agent and assumed the bomb was on the plane, Min was fatally careless, Marcus and Luisa let the briefcase out of their sight after searching it, Roddy let a known killer get behind him on the train, Catherine lets her past constantly haunt her, maybe Shirley had no screwups?). But it’s not like The Park is any better—Tavener continually backs the play of the wrong people both above and below her, her top Dog muffed Harper’s accident report, and Webb is the most obnoxious, self-centered, over-confident screwup of them all. Too bad he’ll probably be back. So I’ll keep rooting for the slow horses, as at least they’re not self-important jackasses.
-
I kept thinking that Spider is completely insufferable; glad I wasn’t the only one. Tavener arranged in s1 to keep him and slough off River (pun intended). She really played herself in that deal.
-
Well, I spoke too soon last episode. I’m so glad to see Min’s idiocy wasn’t protected by plot armor. Though not feeling so good about Louisa’s backup being Marcus at the moment… River’s legend had better be airtight.
-
Min is so shitty at his job (and nowhere good enough for Louisa, either) that it’s painful to watch. But I know I’m not going to be lucky enough for this to be the end of him on my tv. Nor will I be lucky enough to see the downfall of Spider or Taverner. Hopefully Min’s incompetence will be balanced out by more of River and Jackson being highly competent; Shirley, Roddy, and Catherine being really good; and Luisa being good (Marcus unknown yet).

This show is stone cold! Everyone else gets their name as the episode title, but this one is High School, not Walt? What a cut!

I am just getting around to this show now, and so far entertained! This episode ramped up the hilarious, from Brett’s commitment to Fast & Furious tropes, to the literal pissing contest, to the kill you/koala mixup.

That really was a great sketch! I love how excited Mike Diva was to direct it. -
Much as I love the show, I have to agree here

No, they disappeared. 🙁 Luckily I saw them when you first posted; they were cute!

S48.E08: Steve Martin & Martin Short / Brandi Carlile

Loved this episode! They played really well to Martin Short’s energy with the Scrooge, elf, and ‘90s talk show sketches. And Steve is a great sardonic straight man. Cecily’s singing voice is gorgeous. She perfectly hit that ‘40s vibe in the train sketch. The Please Don’t Destroy sketch was perfectly them! If someone wanted to know, what’s PDD? Just show them this one. WU was lit. I love Brandi Carlile! Such a treat. -
Honestly, my biggest reaction is, “Yay, Bobby Finstock!”
-
Just binged it and enjoyed the heck out of it! I don’t like sitcoms, but whatever the name is for these comedic serials, they hit my sweet spot. Joel Kim Booster and Ron Funches were the absolute MVPs. That’s what I loved about it! Firstly, the joke is that both those women have put a lot more effort into their philanthropic endeavors than Molly ever has, but Molly was a great comedic representation of the clueless billionaire. (See also, the new Glass Onion movie.) Secondly, those two women represent a very active debate in philanthropy (also represented by Sofia vs Molly): should the world’s problems be addressed by where billionaires decide to give or should they be solved by those in the communities in need? Agreed and agreed! The only thing Maya wore the entire season that I liked was her hot pink dress for the philanthropy award. The style was classic and gorgeous.

I mean, watch for his whole (hilariously pissy) reaction, but he’s sending mugs to every international watcher who sent a postcard. (Plus a Graphics Department snark, a Shoemaker interaction, and a crackup even bigger than the one during A Closer Look) ❤️ -

Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra (Podcast)
ahisma replied to tessaray's topic in The Rachel Maddow Show
*koffkoff* Merrick Garland Jack Smith *koffkoff* She did a bit of a publicity tour around various podcasts and shows to promote it, but they were mostly “preaching to the choir” types of venues where I heard her. I hope she was on a few other, more mainstream ones, too.
