It's Super Bowl Sunday and the box office shows it. The game is just one day, but attendance drops off sharply on Sunday and the game gets a lot of attention in pop culture that the studios would rather work with (commercials to hype upcoming movies they have higher hopes for) than fight against. Counter-programming has worked (Hannah Montana, Dear John) though not consistently. This year the studios really didn't bother (a new movie got released, but it's under 10 percent on Rotten Tomatoes). February 2–4, 2018 Numbers: 1 (2) Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle $11,000,000 | 3,352 Theaters | $3,282 Avg. | $90M Budget | $352,642,752 2 (1) Maze Runner: The Death Cure $10,200,000 | 3,793 Theaters | $2,689 Avg. | $62M Budget | $39,760,199 3 (N) Winchester $9,250,000 | 2,480 Theaters | $3,730 Avg. | $3.5M Budget | $9,250,000 4 (4) The Greatest Showman $7,800,000 | 2,588 Theaters | $3,014 Avg. | $84M Budget | $137,475,172 5 (5) The Post $5,218,122 | 2,462 Theaters | $2,119 Avg. | $50M Budget | $67,202,632 6 (3) Hostiles $5,108,228 | 2,934 Theaters | $1,741 Avg. | $39M Budget | $20,822,641 7 (6) 12 Strong $4,710,000 | 2,918 Theaters | $1,614 Avg. | $35M Budget | $37,303,553 8 (7) Den of Thieves $4,670,000 | 2,112 Theaters | $2,211 Avg. | $30M Budget | $36,270,932 9 (8) The Shape of Water $4,448,520 | 2,341 Theaters | $1,900 Avg. | $19.5M Budget | $44,728,570 10 (9) Paddington 2 $3,110,000 | 2,388 Theaters | $1,302 Avg. | $50M Budget | $36,313,679 11 (12) Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri $3,050,000 | 1,726 Theaters | $1,767 Avg. | $12M Budget | $41,814,051 12 (16) I, Tonya $2,469,724 | 1,450 Theaters | $1,703 Avg. | $11M Budget | $22,553,609 13 (10) Padmaavat $2,438,930 | 354 Theaters | $6,890 Avg. | $33.5M Budget | $8,900,499 14 (18) Darkest Hour $2,362,975 | 1,486 Theaters | $1,590 Avg. | $30M Budget | $48,786,132 15 (11) Star Wars: The Last Jedi $2,338,242 | 1,467 Theaters | $1,594 Avg. | $200M Budget | $614,455,022 Best Picture Watch: Dunkirk $188,373,161 Get Out $175,985,850 The Post $67,202,632 Darkest Hour $48,786,132 The Shape of Water $44,728,570 Lady Bird $43,733,193 Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri $41,814,051 Phantom Thread $14,174,109 Call Me by Your Name $12,940,908 Total Gross: $637,738,606 Average Gross: $70,859,845

Isn't JKR the screenwriter for the FB series? And not some lowly screenwriter who has no say how the movies will turn out, pretty much the opposite, so, some fans are going to conclude that she is a not-minor reason that this Dumbledore development in FB2 is going ahead (even if that is not the case). Though in the Deathly Hallows book, the sexuality with Dumbledore and Grindelwald wasn't explicitly stated, either, so maybe they're just being consistent...

I'd drifted away from The Bachelor when I heard about the spoilers of Jason dumping his F1 for the runner-up. I just had to see how that would play out and I've been a regular viewer ever since. My guess is that TPTB were upset with Kaitlyn for spoiling that it was Shawn because they were playing up her attraction to Nick that season, so fans knowing it was the other guy would mess up the storyline they were trying to promote. This year Arie has not generated the most excitement among the fanbase or media, so maybe the producers are fine with anything that will generate buzz.

I watch a show based on a book series and in one season just last year, three hetero sexual situations had a character aged up 1-3 years from the source material to appease modern sensibilities. So I don't look at that decision as some sort of concession to homophobia, but it seems like others do and that was never a consideration for adapting CMBYN. I feel like the age difference and fear of the reaction to it, has held the movie back in a way and caused it to be promoted somewhat more hesitantly, if that makes sense. So, you get a situation where the stars go on talk shows and stay away from mentioning Elio's age, as not to stir up controversy. People who don't really look up movies before going to see them go to this and get outraged, because they view 18 as the gold standard age of consent throughout all time and space even though scientists now say adolescence should be extended to 24, so in a hundred years, who knows, people might view 18 as a barbarically low age for sexual activity. You do get selective outrage about this movie (James Woods) but I don't think all the negative reaction the age difference can be dismissed as homophobia. Dirty Dancing was huge but it was 30 years ago; I can't see a major studio greenlighting that script as is, now or it not being more controversial than it was at the time. The Diary of a Teenage Girl flopped (less than $1.5 million at the box office) despite Sundance buzz and critical acclaim, likely because of the graphic sexuality with such a young character. An Education made it through Oscar season without this much controversy but it was also PG-13 and presented the central relationship as A Bad Thing. A much dicier dynamic there than here in CMBYN, granted. I feel that the father had a relationship with a man in the past and isn't unhappy in his marriage but maybe has regrets about not pursuing it?

In the S2 premiere, Kevin mentions to Toby that Kate was the one who told him Jack died, so he didn't get the news from Rebecca.

Tonight's new episode featured a family of five with an 800K budget in Lucas, Texas, so all the places were gigantic, except to the House Hunters who kept complaining about the lack of space in the different houses. He was looking for "rustic industrial" and a 4+ car garage while she needed a grand staircase for the future prom photos. The three daughters all had their own bedrooms at their old house, apparently, but the bedrooms weren't all on the same floor like the girls wanted, so they just had to move! Obviously telling them to suck it up and deal isn't an option in this household...

Wow, Pan, I hadn't thought of that one since it flopped. The 2003 Peter Pan wasn't a hit either (alas), so who knows why anyone thought spending way more money, uglying up Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara as Tiger Lily would make the new version a success? Jumanji's drops have been incredible and if it's not hurt too much by Black Panther, I think it can reach the $400M mark. After that, it's just a little more than $3.7 million to top the domestic unadjusted gross of Spider-Man and become Sony's all-time number one.

She was the one who wrote the BDSM Twilight fic, Master of the Universe, which was always an alternate universe story without vampires (apparently it's a whole subset of Twilight fan fiction). She got a big following, took the story offline (though nothing is really deleted from the internet), changed key names/details and the story from Snowqueens Icedragon reappeared as E.L. James' Fifty Shades trilogy. Maybe Stephenie Meyer isn't particularly litigious or her lawyers looked into it and decided there wasn't enough of a case.

I knew I'd seen the image of a couple sitting together like that before in a movie but couldn't quite place it. Have Andi and Jonah had one episode together without some sort of angst? It's obvious they're not going to live happily ever after, but for a pair of 13 year olds (or a 13 and 14 year old-we don't really know how old Jonah is), there's quite a bit of drama. Would a middle school these days really sanction a Grease sing along, even if they did the school version of lyrics?

Maybe there's more of that to come...the relationship still seems pretty new and we don't know why they broke up. The show went to the trouble of giving Teen Randall a girlfriend at this stage in the story, when no one really would have cared if he'd been single in high school, given the primary focus being on how Jack died. A black male/white female pairing has a particular set of baggage in America, even now and more so in the 90s. Still, I can picture Jack and Rebecca not viewing Randall dating Allison as being that different from their old BFFs Miguel and Shelley, who were married and had kids together back in the 70s. I looked up the weather in Pittsburgh on Super Bowl Sunday in 1998 to see if there was some sort of winter warm spell that year...nope, it was cold.

The poster is saying that Diana attended schools and Queen Elizabeth didn't, so "technically" that would make the former better educated than the latter. Attending a school, of course, isn't a guarantee of actually learning much, nor is it the whole measure of a person's knowledge. I hadn't thought of the angle that Philip went to school and Elizabeth didn't, so why not let him pick out the schools for the kids--that makes sense. As for why Elizabeth chose Philip, IMO she had a schoolgirl crush that deepened through the years and didn't meet another guy she ended up liking better instead. As they dated, he didn't do anything to ruin the attraction, from her perspective. In terms of their romance, I think the more interesting story on her side of things is how her parents and the courtiers were convinced.

But then TPTB would have to change the credits! :) I hope we're in for a time jump next season (there will be a next season, right?) because the perpetual 13 year old gambit doesn't work with real child actors like it does in Baby-Sitters Club books! The show has a tricky line to walk in not being too juvenile yet not too mature for the youngest viewers, and that's much easier to manage with middle school kids. Sure, kids that age can be exposed to a lot but they can also be pretty sheltered and innocent, too. A seventh grader can throw a party with the parents out of town and it can still be depicted in a Disney-friendly way. With high schoolers, showing an unsupervised teen rager while completely sidestepping any sort of talk of drugs/sex/booze (let alone the partaking in any of them) requires a much bigger suspension of disbelief. Oddly, I can picture both the Marty actor and the basketball captain guy getting cast as a young version of Miles Teller in some movie or another.

I believe Kate said she and Madison would have been able to share clothes. Depending on the clothing item and cut, I could see it. Obviously not super-tight things but t-shirts or flowy/baggy 90s dresses, sure.

Two new episodes, after the holiday hiatus! Jonah says he's not still mad at Andi for laughing when he fell at the arcade, but I don't think it's a coincidence that in the next episode he's spending time with some other girl. And the previews, he tells Andi that she's just a friend, but Amber tells Andi, yeah, that's what he used to say about you. Jonah Beck, middle school player? Some of them start early. :) Buffy and Marty are very comfortable together and she obviously likes him but she's in the seventh grade, it's fine if she's scared of "going out" with someone. As predicted, Celia and Ham aren't going to move right away (but probably will, for real, in time for the series finale), though not before she tried to be a bit of a "cool mom" to get Andi to want to spend time with her. Is krumping still a thing or has enough time passed for there to be nostalgia for it? The Cyrus plots lately feel like the writers don't know what to do with him outside of the liking Jonah storyline yet for whatever reason, they can only write about that so much. So, he gets stuck with generic kiddie sitcom filler in the meantime.

Better than expected results for the new openers (I don't think I'd even heard of Den of Thieves until about a week ago) and multiple movies passing big milestones since last weekend. The suit was in for dry cleaning when the fire happened! Maybe after the fire, friends of the family scoured their photo albums and old Christmas cards from the Pearsons and helped the family rebuild their picture collection that way. Kevin's old high school football video...eh, the coach had it?

The Business: News, Rumours, Analysis, and More
Dejana replied to sdpfeiffy's topic in Everything Else About Movies
The Greatest Showman will end up with an impressive box office total for a live-action musical. It's always better to be in a hit than a flop, but TGS is not really a Michelle Williams showcase. Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron and Zendaya, OTOH, did the bulk of the promo and will probably get more credit from Hollywood for its success. -
My impression is that the Teen Kate we've seen is in an "After" phase and the shows' timelines haven't yet depicted the "Before" part of her high school years. Kevin ends up wearing that suit to Jack's funeral, doesn't he?

Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance (Lifetime) - General Discussion
Dejana replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in TV Movies
Can't wait! Lifetime's William & Kate movie was so bad and cheap--I loved the UCLA campus standing in for St. Andrews, because Southern California and Scotland look so similar! Wonder if they're calling up Camilla Luddington and that guy to reprise their roles. I hope we get dueling versions again but I can imagine Hallmark is debating whether they can get away with a Harry/Meghan movie that doesn't mention race at all, even in passing (she's starred in a couple of their movies but I know in one, two white actors played her parents). An American woman marrying a European prince is a Hallmark story come to life, so they would be stupid to skip it. -
The Greatest Showman really is turning into one of the leggiest modern runs ever: My takeaways are that Hollywood should make more original musicals (though can they be about less problematic people from now on, thanks) and stop blaming Rotten Tomatoes for weak theater attendance.
