  4. Anyone with MoviePass might want to enjoy it now: In addition to the "technical difficulties", other customers got hit with $8.00 surcharges on movies that have been out for weeks. And, tickets for the new Mission: Impossible weren't available for purchase on the MoviePass app. AMC already rolled out their monthly subscription service and I wonder, after MoviePass is kaput, if/when the other big US chains will follow suit (and with something that brings more to the table than Cinemark's Movie Club). The subscription model has been around in the UK for over a decade and their annual admissions haven't plummeted dramatically as a result.
  5. The theater count is dropping to 15 today, so it's probably not happening this weekend, either. OTOH, when Spectre made its slow craw to $200 million, it hit the mark by getting a near $5,000 theater average on its 20th weekend. Somehow it managed to make more in 9 theaters than it had 92 theaters three weeks earlier. Hollywood accounting at its finest! Yeah, this past weekend, it's opening was around $48 million. Most of the industry reports about Skyscraper's box office have been mixed at best (because, well, reality), except for the ones that The Rock re-posts on his social media accounts:
  6. Sequels rule the Top 10, including the number one spot (Denzel and Meryl both appear in their first movie sequels, ever). The Mamma Mia franchise (as of the estimates, at least) misses out on the top spot, again: the first shared an opening weekend with The Dark Knight. Anderson made the third set interesting but I was thinking, "Bless his heart," during the first two.

    Tennis Thread

I think it would be exhausting to live with someone like that, but since I don't have to, his neediness amuses me greatly as does the fan reaction to him. There seems to be a bit of a temper with him, but in the history of great tennis players, it's really that not much. His timing is just bad in terms of winning hearts--not that he doesn't have fans, but if he'd been maybe 10 years older or come along after Federer/Nadal were retired and been this successful, he'd be more popular to begin with and likely wouldn't make such displays of neediness in the first place. I was pulling for Nadal but had a feeling Djokovic would take it. When he retires and publishes his autobiography, maybe he'll share the real story about his horrible swoon and the business with the guru. Congrats to Kerber, just wish it had been a better effort from Serena.

  12. Apparently, "Gerwig’s screenplay focuses more on the sisters’ young adult lives after they leave the family home", so casting more for that aspect than the teenage years makes sense. The movie "jumps back and forth in time, focusing more on themes than narrative" for everyone worried about where Gerwig's approach leaves Also, Streep is playing Aunt March, not Marmee. Even with a more traditional approach, Emma Stone wouldn't have been the oldest actor to play a March sister on film. Here are the ages of the actors from earlier adaptations: Little Women, dir. George Cukor, 1933 (cast member age during the year of release in parentheses) Frances Dee as Meg (24) Katharine Hepburn as Jo (26) Jean Parker as Beth (18) Joan Bennett as Amy (23) Spring Byington as Marmee (47) Edna May Oliver as Aunt March (50) Douglass Montgomery as Laurie (26) Paul Lukas as Professor Bhaer (39) John Davis Lodge as John Brooke (30) Little Women, dir. 13. I would hope so (AMatW/BP double features), but think Disney knows Black Panther has other chances, like an awards season re-release if it comes to that, while A Wrinkle in Time needed much more help to get past the $100 million mark. There are also more incentives for a studio to push a movie past the $100M or $200M milestones, whereas $700M domestic is such lofty terrain for any movie that there wouldn't be standard industry clauses about it in the contracts for actors, execs, the syndication rights, etc.
  14. Making four times the budget just domestically is always great, especially for a movie that's so out there and with such a poor CinemaScore, too (D+). The studio should definitely be thrilled: Hereditary is already only second to Lady Bird as A24's all-time top film at the box office.

  17. Incredibles 2 shatters the opening weekend record for an animated film (previously Finding Dory at $135M). Will it play more like a frontloaded comic-book sequel or every other Pixar film that gets an A+ Cinemascore, i.e., legs for days? The latter could have it making a run at Black Panther and Infinity War as the top domestic film of the year. So much superhero fatigue! Further down the chart, Disney managed to get A Wrinkle in Time over the $100M mark (ETA, on Monday! Even fudging the numbers has to have some basis in reality, I guess). In warmer months. older movies benefit from being paired in double bills with a new movie from the same studio, at the nation's remaining drive in theaters (about 330). Still, this is one of the more...noticeable efforts in recent memory. I guess with Wrinkle being on streaming/DVD/Blu-Ray now, that this was the last gasp and subtlety had to go out the window. 20. The original MP adjusts to $716 million, which granted, doesn't mean it would make that sort of money were it released today, but even Savings Mr. Banks, a non-musical drama about negotiating for the Poppins movie rights, made $83 million domestic in this decade! That's really mind-boggling to me, even if the character is obviously beloved. I guess in another 20-30 years we can expect the film version of how Spielberg failed to win over JK Rowling and Warner Bros ended up with Harry Potter? Anyway, Disney's high hopes for Mary Poppins Returns are more than just financial. Per Deadline's reportage from this year's Oscar night (awards season can never start too soon in Hollywood, I guess); After the director drama and shooting so much of the film over again, I was surprised Solo didn't move to early August, to give it a bit more time away from The Last Jedi and for there to be time to cut better trailers/ads . Maybe they should have just stuck with the Lord/Miller version? It probably also would have flopped by Star Wars standards, but on a much lower budget, at least.
  21. For many movies, $83 million would be an amazing opening weekend or even a fine total, but for a Star Wars movie...it's under the worst projections thrown out, going into the weekend. No one expected Solo to reach the heights of a main trilogy movie, but this is looking to be the first box office flop of the SW universe. The international numbers are even worse. Lucasfilm maybe should have waited to see how Solo would do before announcing such firm plans for a Boba Fett spin-off next? 22. To meet 2018 parenting standards, the characters would have to be aged up from the books, to high school at minimum and probably 10th-11th grade at least, if not even older. Sixth grade junior baby-sitters? Yeah no. Unless it's going to be some sort of fantasy land Disney/Nick type show where the kids all act simultaneously too old and young for their age. I wonder if Mallory and Jessi will make the cut here or whether they'd just, IDK racelift Dawn or something. Will the writers be obvious with the LGBT characters or go in an unexpected direction? Maybe Claudia would be a slightly less atrocious speller in the age of autocorrect, and Dawn would be vegan, even, without being treated like such an oddball for it. With Stacey, they could just take some of her storylines from the books that were a bit too mature for a kids series anyway (What is a high school sophomore doing, dating an eighth grade girl? Wait, is that young teacher she has a crush on kinda flirting back?) and explore them with a bit more depth. Fingers crossed this adaptation works out!
  23. Deadpool 2 doesn't quite reach the heights of the first film's opening weekend ($132,434,639), but that was boosted by Valentine's Day and a holiday Monday (Presidents' Day) deflating the Sunday drop. The release of Black Panther on Blu-Ray/DVD finally pushes it out of the Top 10. Disney cares about box office milestones less than some other studios, but I can't imagine that it won't stay in theaters long enough to get past $700 million. 24. This movie recreated the official account of the proposal towards the end, just added an earlier version not fit for the introductory interview from the palace, lol. It's been theorized among some royal watchers that on that trip (IRL, I think it happened around her birthday?), Harry and Meghan either got engaged outright or reached an understanding, basically, that they would marry, but first, she had to wind down her old life and he had to get permission from the Queen. So, being a movie, they went with a sexy version of this.
