Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance (Lifetime) - General Discussion
Dejana replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in TV Movies
Well, that could have been considerably worse and the movie went there with respect to race (since when can Lifetime original movies drop the n-word?). I'd just read about Queen Charlotte this weekend but was surprised the movie mentioned her. The leads gave it a good effort and he sounds a lot like the real Harry. There was a lot of embellishment about the relationship, of course, someone probably intervened after filming started to make TV Kate less judgey so there was a 180 with her attitude about 30-45 minutes in, and I can't wait for the scandalized Daily Fail headlines about this vulgar American production portraying the proposal happening in bed and months before the official story of the roast chicken. Also, is Prince Louis secretly an elephant, since this thing had Kate already being pregnant with him at Pippa's wedding, an event occurring 11 months before his birth? -
Pretty generous drops all around for the Mother's Day weekend. Higher final numbers for multiple titles wouldn't be a surprise. Totally blanked on Ian's ex-wife! That would make much more sense, of course. I was just thinking, what genuinely outrageous, fandom-dividing happening does Diana have in store? There's usually one thing every other book or so, lol.
-
Thanks for posting. Most intrigued by this excerpt. Rachel's going to bed with Ian but worries about him thinking of another woman during the act? Oh my! Of course, it could be anyone, though I think he would at least outwardly try to be more circumspect around his wife, about his enthusiam for someone else, unless... I'm really hoping this Her of Rachel's imagination isn't Bree, but given the number of Bree/Ian scenes shared from Book 9 so far and Ian's thoughts from previous books about her looks/sexual attractiveness...

That's a good question, and very tricky. Among studios as a whole, it's probably not that uncommon, but with franchises, it's a harder feat. Most only release one movie a year, if that, so barring Titanic legs, they can only stay in the top 10 for so long. Then there are Franchises vs. Brands! The Marvel Cinematic Universe is a franchise while Box Office Mojo considers Marvel Comics a brand. So, any X-Men count under The Marvel Comics brand but not as MCU movies, Spider-Man: Homecoming is MCU but not the earlier Spider-Man movies, and so on. Anyway, I don't think Infinity War will be able to hang on in the Top 10 until July; it has a lot more up-front demand and competition than Black Panther did. Disney managed an April-to-June run once with their Live Action Re-Imaginings: The Jungle Book entered the Top 10 on April 15, 2016, was still there when Alice: Through the Looking Glass came out in May, and A:TTLG had its last Top 10 Sunday on June 26, 2016. ETA: It looks like at least one Star Wars re-release managed to be in the weekend Top 10 from January 31, 1997 to April 6, 1997, and sometimes two or more at once.
-
Some Overboard audience stats (Deadline): The studio (Lionsgate) is the same one that releases Tyler Perry movies, so they likely used similar promotion strategies, with the advertising heavily geared to outlets frequented by the primary fanbase. I did see an occasional ad for it on Lifetime/HGTV sort of channels but nothing compared to what seemed like an onslaught for I Feel Pretty.

If the estimates hold, Avengers: Infinity War will have the second-best second weekend of all time, yet the amount is a little less than a million ahead of Black Panther's second weekend. Infinity War got off to a bigger start, so it's showing signs of the typical Marvel sequel frontloadedness as time goes on. Star Wars: The Last Jedi was the first $200M+ opener not to earn a 3x multiplier and it looks like Infinity War will be the second. Granted, there are only six $200M+ openers ever, but four of them have ended up earning more than three times their opening weekends: Marvel's The Avengers (3.01x), Jurassic World (3.12x), Star Wars: The Force Awakens (3.78x) and Black Panther (3.43x so far). May 4–6, 2018 Estimates: 1 (1) Avengers: Infinity War $112,474,000 4,474 Theaters | $25,139 Avg. | $300-400M Budget | $450,806,540 2 (N) Overboard (2018) $14,750,000 | 1,623 Theaters | $9,088 Avg. | $12M Budget | $14,750,000 3 (2) A Quiet Place $7,600,000 | 3,413 Theaters | $2,227 Avg. | $17M Budget | $159,894,386 4 (3) I Feel Pretty $4,900,000 | 3,232 Theaters | $1,516 Avg. | $32M Budget | $37,798,283 5 (4) Rampage $4,620,000 | 3,151 Theaters | $1,466 Avg. | $120M Budget | $84,793,100 6 (N) Tully $3,186,000 | 1,353 Theaters | $2,355 Avg. | $3,186,000 7 (5) Black Panther $3,146,000 | 1,641 Theaters | $1,917 Avg. | $200M Budget | $693,126,615 (12th weekend in the Top 10!) 8 (7) Truth or Dare $1,885,000 | 1,904 Theaters | $990 Avg. | $3.5M Budget | $38,236,360 9 (6) Super Troopers 2 $1,815,000 | 2,118 Theaters | $857 Avg. | $13.5M Budget | $25,445,701 10 (N) Bad Samaritan $1,758,000 | 2,007 Theaters | $876 Avg. | $1,758,000 RBG $560,000 | 34 Theaters | $16,471 Avg. | $560,000 102 Not Out $480,000 | 102 Theaters | $4,706 Avg. | $480,000 Disobedience $310,272 | 31 Theaters | $10,009 Avg. | $638,645 International Box Office: BLACK PANTHER: $645.3M Overseas Total | $1.338B Global Total AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR: $713.3M Overseas Total | $1.164B Global Total COCO: $590.8M Overseas Total | $800.5M Global Total READY PLAYER ONE: $433.6M Overseas Total | $566.6M Global Total THE GREATEST SHOWMAN: $255.4M Overseas Total | $429.1M Global Total RAMPAGE: $293.1M Overseas Total | $377.8M Global Total PETER RABBIT: $212.1M Overseas Total | $326.7M Global Total A QUIET PLACE: $95.4M Overseas Total | $255.2M Global Total A WRINKLE IN TIME: $31.4M Overseas Total | $126.8M Global Total BLOCKERS: $24.9M Overseas Total | $81M Global Total TRUTH OR DARE: $20.2M Overseas Total | $58.4M Global Total ISLE OF DOGS: $22.4M Overseas Total | $50.9M Global Total

This definitely should have been in the actual film!
-
I thought Avengers: Infinity War would have a bigger opening than Black Panther but end up with a lower domestic total, though that was before this weekend. It seems very well liked by fans but there was a huge rush factor. Sellouts cause spillover that lead to lower drops in the first week, but Marvel sequels can be frontloaded overall. The drop next weekend will tell the story.
-
It does often seem that way, but the record inevitably gets broken in 4-5 years at the most.
-
Avengers: Infinity War sets new all-time domestic and global opening weekend records—and it doesn't open in China for another two weeks! Most box office reporters/watchers believe Disney is lowballing the weekend estimate, given its huge Saturday ($83 million, also a record) and expect it to jump $5-10 million with the final numbers tomorrow. Where could it end up? April 27–29, 2018 Estimates: 1 (N) Avengers: Infinity War $250,000,000 | 4,474 Theaters | $55,878 Avg. | $300-400M Budget* | $250,000,000 2 (1) A Quiet Place $10,650,000 | 3,565 Theaters | $2,987 Avg. | $17M Budget | $148,173,301 3 (3) I Feel Pretty $8,130,000 | 3,440 Theaters | $2,363 Avg. | $32M Budget | $29,573,561 4 (2) Rampage $7,105,000 | 3,508 Theaters | $2,025 Avg. | $120M Budget | $77,930,557 5 (8) Black Panther $4,381,000 | 1,650 Theaters | $2,655 Avg. | $200M Budget | $688,009,489 6 (4) Super Troopers 2 $3,600,000 | 2,125 Theaters | $1,694 Avg. | $13.5M Budget | $22,084,929 7 (5) Truth or Dare $3,210,000 | 2,420 Theaters | $1,326 Avg. | $3.5M Budget | $35,316,995 8 (7) Blockers $2,945,000 | 2,324 Theaters | $1,267 Avg. | $21M Budget | $53,215,490 9 (6) Ready Player One $2,435,000 | 2,365 Theaters | $1,030 Avg. | $175M Budget | $130,683,218 10 (9) Traffik $1,620,000 | 1,046 Theaters | $1,549 Avg. | $4M Budget | $6,752,274 Disobedience $241,276 | 5 Theaters | $48,255 Avg. | $241,276 Kings $173,113 | 214 Theaters | $809 Avg. | $173,113 Love, Simon $125,000 | 173 Theaters | $723 Avg. | $17M Budget | $40,492,904 Let the Sunshine In $40,267 | 2 Theaters | $20,134 Avg. | $40,267 International Box Office: BLACK PANTHER: $643.2M Overseas Total | $1.331B Global Total AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR: $380M Overseas Total | $630M Global Total READY PLAYER ONE: $414.5M Overseas Total | $545.1M Global Total RAMPAGE: $256.7M Overseas Total | $334.6M Global Total A QUIET PLACE: $87.2M Overseas Total | $235.3M Global Total *Quite the range, but Marvel hasn't released an exact number.

The latter seems like the practical thing. I've heard Carrie refer to shorts under her stage outfits. Chris Stapleton wasn't there because his wife gave birth to twins earlier in the day (also, his birthday apparently). With Carrie, I wonder if it's like when you have a zit that you think everyone notices, but actually, they don't, really, times 100. Not to say that she's vain, but she's probably gone through most of her life and entire adulthood being regarded as a very attractive woman, so any sort of facial injury might have freaked her out. More cynically, she is with a new record label, so maybe being so dramatic about whatever happened is part of the reintroduction strategy. Lauren Alaina sang twice: "What Ifs" with Kane Brown on the big stage and a bit of "Doin' Fine" on the smaller stage later on the show. I liked both performances but preferred the duet.
-
Nice humblebrag from Reba about her dress. I thought it looked rather 90s. Jason Aldean gets Entertainer of the Year. They put that "Redneck Life" song on at the end not really caring if he would get cut off, right?
-
There's more than a little 80s hair metal/power ballad in "Cry Pretty", but Carrie's never hidden her fandom of that genre. She had on glittery undereye makeup, like the cover art ( though, isn't teary makeup...crying pretty?). For all I said about not being a purist, "The Fighter" isn't even kind of country. Nice little bop, but a dancey pop song. I remember Rhett Akins having a run for a few years, but his son is on a whole other level of popularity. He's on the Entertainer of the Year, king of country path.
-
It's wrapping up domestically, being on DVD/streaming now and only making $225K in 209 theaters this weekend. Internationally, it's still in 14 markets and increased over last week in Australia. Staggered releases help movies make money for a long time period of time. The Boss Baby just got released theatrically in Japan within the last couple of months! http://deadline.com/2018/04/rampage-quiet-place-black-panther-ready-player-one-china-weekend-results-international-box-office-1202364491/

In all the new pictures, though, she pretty much looks...the same? She canceled on scheduled events at the last minute, including an Opry appearance, which is really unlike her. What would be the point? Even in country, it's not a huge deal for a star to get cosmetic work. Dolly's made jokes about it for decades and Reba just shows up looking refreshed. Mentioning that you're going to look different is a good way to call attention to it. I mean, I don't think Gwen Stefani has said she's had a bunch of work done over the years, but look at her next to Blake tonight, I barely recognized her. They are milking Carrie's reemergence but she's launching a new album that will probably be more personal than usual for her, so...it's showbiz. Did Chris Stapleton and Morgane have two boys, or a boy and a girl? I was so confused by Reba's comments. Lauren Alaina and Kane Brown grew up together and used to be classmates. So cool that they had a number one song! I don't love every musical direction that country has gone in during the past decade, but so much stuff that people say "isn't country", if you played it on Z100, 15 seconds in, all the pop fans would be saying, "WTF is this country song?" Genres have to evolve sonically, or else they'll just be irrelevant. There's a long history with country music and purism, though. Way back when, the Opry banned drums, because reasons.

On Twitter, I saw that it's a thing in Asia, having two kitchens, but people thought it wasn't a realistic expectation for a house in Missouri. Hardly anyone thought she would be doing much of the cooking!

2 Kitchens 2 Laundry Rooms is/was a registered nurse?! Maybe she's only spoiled and demanding at home, and is fine with strangers. Maybe Billy Zane wanted so much acreage so he could get away from her!
