  1. If it was the author of an ongoing series....sure? When the Harry Potter books hadn't all been published yet, JK Rowling was always mentioning hints and clues, whenever fans asked about upcoming developments. A standalone novel can be read all at once, so it's not experienced the same way as a story in pogress--at least when it's still new and in the midst of being told. Rebecca and Kate were having a conversation in the flashback, but the focus went back to Kevin and Jack, though you could still hear indistinct voices for a bit. Maybe it was about whatever college plans she had. I wonder if we'll see that scene from their perspective next week. Kevin's an actor and just recently, was totally unfamiliar with/oblivious about the concept of conflict-free jewelry. This is not a well-read guy. He's supposed to know the most up-to-date procedures in prescription writing because...he watched that Frontline about the opioid crisis? SAG-AFTRA offers an online course for people who might play doctors on TV? Did Dr. Charlotte's prescription pad have "For Narcotics Only" printed across the top in bold letters or something? Doctors do still prescribe other things. Mostly as e-scripts it seems, but paper Rx pads still exist. Kevin using it the wrong way is not a show writing mistake.
  2. On the awards sites I visit, it's been the general assumption all year that Get Out would compete in the Musical/Comedy categories at the Golden Globes. Some skepticism but the predictions accounted for GO and its actors in Comedy (much) more often than not. The Golden Globes don't have Horror/Thriller/Satire categories, so...
  3. Not to mention that Dumbledore is supposed to have been born in the 1880s, and the books started being published in the 1990s, when calling out bullying and preventing it weren't as high on the educational agenda as they are in the 2010s. Hoping that the Christopher Plummer addition to All the Money in the World is a huge success and it inspires other directors/filmmakers. I mean, outside of Depp's personal character, he wasn't a good casting decision for Grindelwald anyway.
  4. I'm not sure where the show is supposed to take place but it films in Utah and there have been shots of the mountains in the outdoor scenes, so, going with that, according to the Utah Labor Commission's website: So, Amber could be 14 and in the 9th grade and working afterschool hours. I could swear she mentioned that Jonah would be going to high school next year at some point, maybe to her HS friends teasing him. Andi turned 13 in the first episode, which took place in the middle of the school year. Many 7th graders reach 13 during the year and Cyrus/Buffy being in the same grade as her makes sense. Initially, the three of them seemed to view Jonah as this popular guy not on their level, which would fit with him being a year older than them. Most of the high school teachers I know say they've seen a dip in extracurricular participation from the aughts to this decade. I know some high schools that pad out their numbers with letting middle schoolers take part in the sports teams, though usually with 8th as opposed to 7th graders. It's a tween sitcom, so Buffy joining the formerly all-boys team is the a simple but emphatic way to show a girl breaking barriers.
  5. But I think that is kind of how Ayelet Waldman phrased it, which is why people were so up in arms. Maybe she was just being extreme to make for a livelier editorial: the ideas that marriages need tending to succeed and for women, especially, not to solely define themselves as Mom, after becoming parents, aren't really all that outrageous. My biggest takeaway from the whole kerfuffle was mild shock to learn that Michael Chabon was married to a woman. Time generally tells with these things, but a Duggar daughter "anticipating the marriage" and having a ten pound "preemie" would be hilarious. I would love to see the spin, or tearful confessions about straying from the courtship model and giving into temptation. Twins would be interesting in a different way and also throw a fascinating wrinkle into the dynamic between the sisters.
  6. My wild guess is that the director wasn't attracted to Adam Levine in any way but maybe it was a different story with Keira? Not to say that he made inappropriate advances necessarily, but his criticisms showed a certain fixation on her looks.
  7. In general I pretend the epilogue didn't happen, but agree that it's all a bit much. It fits with the sort of simplistic story she was writing early on but not what the series became and even if she wrote the last chapter to motivate herself before she "made it", she could have kept the original version as IDK, a bonus chapter or web exclusive or something. It seems like she wanted Albus' initials to be ASP (like the snake), but the boys could have been...James Weasley Potter and Albus Sirius. The movies softened Snape a great deal, but considering where the character ends up, perhaps they (inadvertently) had the right idea of it.
  8. Even in the first book, I thought the way Dumbledore dangled the House Cup victory before the Slytherins before very publicly snatching it away, was not becoming of a school leader, who should really be more impartial. The first chapter of the series shows Dumbledore making unilateral decisions about Harry's welfare (over the objections of McGonagall, who'd actually observed the Dursleys and came away extremely unimpressed) and because of the simple sort of fairy tale beginning, you don't really question why those decisions are up to him, or if he has less than altruistic motives for limiting Harry's contact with the magical world in his formative years. If he'd been adopted, basically, by some wizarding family as a baby, maybe he'd have more loyalty to them than Dumbledore? Maybe a family like the Weasleys (Order members) would have less influence on Harry if he'd grown up with a magical mother and father figure who cherished him. With Snape, I suspected that he'd had feelings for Lily after the first book, when it was revealed that he hated James (jealousy, I figured). I felt sure of it as of Prisoner of Azkaban, where he bashed Harry's father over and over, but never said anything about his mother, not even to be disparaging about a woman who'd pick such a supposedly terrible guy. And given the sort of writer Rowling was, I didn't think she would end the series by saying, "Yup, Snape was a creep all along, Dumbledore's faith in him was misplaced!" During that Quidditch match where the kids spot him muttering as the bludger goes after Harry, they conclude that he's cursing it, but they're wrong: he was actually trying to help Harry and they just don't have the whole story. That's basically how it is with Snape for the entire series, really.
  9. She hasn't been shown in any other scenes. Common guesses were Randall's girlfriend at the time or Miguel and Shelley's daughter.

  11. I doubt we've heard the last of Gabriel. The idea of not all relationships being good for a person, or moving on from an old love, seems to be a recurrent theme of the show. So, my feeling is that the clock is ticking on Andi and Jonah, not only because 13 year olds rarely find "the one" so soon in life, but that the show is out to make that specific point. The writers are moving too fast on the Amber redemption, or maybe went too far with making her so horrid last year? Maybe she wasn't conceived as a long-term character initially. Interesting to see her give Andi advice about dealing with Jonah. His personality is going to wear on Andi before long. I guess Cyrus and Iris won't be dragged out for too long, then? They are pretty compatible in all the other ways, so if he puts her off for generic reasons, she would probably still hold out hope. I wonder if she'll end up being the first person to whom he'll describe himself as "gay". From what's been shown, I have a hard time buying that a school of this size wouldn't have a girls' basketball team, so I spend Buffy's storyline wondering about the potential Title IX violations. Next week will give more answers about Bex leaving home... Did Celia and Ham not know about her pregnancy beforehand? I hadn't considered that possibility.

  14. Well, they are the children of Rebecca, who seemingly spent her twenties as a full-time lounge singer in Pittsburgh and was disappointed her professional musical career hadn't gone anywhere. As the kids grew up, it doesn't sound as though she pursued more casual performing outlets, like singing at weddings on weekends or a church choir, before she landed the gig with her ex's band. Maybe the entitlement and poor work ethic are genetic? I don't feel the aftershow segments for TIU are required viewing or tend to be contradictory of the episodes themselves, as I have with some other shows. Sometimes the segments or interviews make me reevaluate what the show presented (these forums show how perceptions can differ!). And I agree that some viewers were maybe, let's say, distracted as they watched, and may have missed certain developments even if the show presented them clearly enough.

  16. Scenes like that can be filmed in such a way that the child actors don't actually have to see anything inappropriate. They film a kid looking into a doorway separately, then splice that into a scene with the adults being interrupted in the midst of whatever sexual thing they are doing, without the child really being present for the worst bits. I can remember this happening a couple of times on Mad Men. Joan and Marsali were definitely closer in age in the books; Marsali tells Claire about speculating with her sister on how awful sex must be. They saw their mother constantly shirk from Jamie's touch even as he treated her well, from what they could see, so they concluded that the marital relations part behind closed doors had to be this terrible thing to be dreaded at all costs. I'm from a part of the world where it's not unusual to call their fathers "Daddy" well into adulthood, so that part of the scene never stood out as unusual to me.
  17. Jonah is so easygoing about everything, almost too much so, that it would be a nice change of pace to see him truly rattled by something and acknowledging it. That sort of angle seems more likely for the writers to pursue, given the confines of the Disney Channel. So, who/what is in the mysterious photo if not Bowie? Is this a Bex Ex the family doesn't know about? Does Bowie need to call Maury Povich? :) On the Freeform version of this show, maybe...
  18. Several scenes from the upcoming season were released before the premiere on Disney's Youtube channel, here are the ones that haven't aired yet:

    NFL Thread

Until this summer, I had a job where I had to tell people to fax in documents (to their dismay and bewilderment about where to find a fax machine), so it kind of pleases me to hear that other places are still in the Stone Age, too. Of course where I worked wasn't the NFL, with big sponsorship deals for the latest tablets and gadgets! Maybe they stepped it up to e-faxing, at least? Very curious about the Pats QB situation...
  20. My theory is that in S1, the writers had it in mind that Miguel and Rebecca got together shortly after Jack's death, without anticipating the Miguel backlash. So now to make the situation seem more palatable to the contingent that resents Miguel (not that everyone does!), for S2 they've decided to push back the timeline of their courtship.
  21. Hmmm, so Rebecca and Miguel lost touch and didn't get together for many years after Jack's death. I wonder why the kids seem to resent him so much, then? Oh, dear, they had to dub over a line about Kevin Spacey? Well, at least they managed it! US viewer, I definitely heard "Christian Bale". Can anyone on television have a routine birth? I suppose people have had babies at home for thousands of years, but still... Of course, Beth had to dramatically go into labor and not have time for the hospital! The cuts between Rebecca talking to baby Randall and Randall's daughter showed that they are trying with the aging makeup on her, at least.
  22. Well, as of the latest episode, Cyrus officially has a girlfriend who gave him his first kiss, so she might have a slight problem with him being attracted to a boy! A thirteen year old coming to terms with being gay (or not straight, at least) can be a story in itself. Besides the personal drama with Andi, other kids might find out and bully him. Lots of Disney shows like this get 4 or 5 seasons. Jonah may not be the only boy Cyrus ever likes and at some point, he could get another love interest. Most people don't end up with their first crush/love and it's generally for the best. It's good for kids to learn how to move beyond an initial disappointment and realize that better things are around the corner. As for Jonah, I am very hesitant to believe that, in addition to finally acknowledging that gay teens exist, Disney is also ready to depict bisexuality on the same show. Still, I honestly feel like the writing/acting with the Cyrus and Jonah scenes so far do seem to be laying the groundwork for a story beyond, "It's totally okay for straight guys and gay guys to be friends, kids!" I do remind myself that it's a different generation than when I was this age, guys can be popular/cool without having to shun someone who isn't hypermasculine, and maybe Jonah is just from a family of huggers or something, because he seems to find a way to touch Cyrus a lot... Yet, Jonah seemed genuinely attracted to Amber and Andi now, and not like he's only dating girls because society says he should. Now, I think the real reason TPTB held back Episode 13 of S1 until now was because of the Cyrus storyline. Originally, S1 had 13 episodes with the last one being "Who Wants Pizza?" until it was shelved to be part of S2. If last season had ended with Cyrus coming out to Buffy, there would have been no new shows for months afterward. I think Disney knew everyone wouldn't like this development and thought the best way to proceed was to let the storyline unfold onscreen rather than give the Helen Lovejoy crowd months to be outraged and dream up hypothetical worst case scenarios of how innocent children would be indoctrinated to "alternative lifestyles"! I mean, they're saying that now, but at least there are the actual episodes to see, and people will be able to judge for themselves each week. So, if it turns out that Jonah is also not straight, I don't think TPTB will be saying so months/years ahead of time.

  24. Cyrus' coming out scene was really well done. The aftershow seemed overly careful to avoid the word "gay", I'm not sure if this is because they're making a point that it hasn't been revealed how he identifies yet, or that the Disney Channel is still uncomfortable with actual LBGTQ+ terminology, which would be weird given that they approved the storyline. Though the whole premise of the series is built around Andi being the child of a teen mom, but has the show ever used the word "pregnant" onscreen? Buffy had an interesting point that maybe Andi isn't ready for a boyfriend. They are just seventh-graders so I would definitely agree, but relationships at that age often aren't very serious. A high school girl wanting to go out with a seventh grader makes even less sense than when I thought they were supposed to be in the eighth grade, unless this is a district where eighth graders are in the high school. I wonder if Iris will start to suspect that Cyrus likes guys or if it will blindside her to learn about it. Amber's big secret is that her family ran into some financial problems and that's why she has a job now. How old is she anyway, and why do I have a sinking feeling that Jonah will backslide with her at least once? Didn't really care about Bex and Bowie, I think it would have been obvious even to my tween self that she wasn't ready to marry him. Buffy's antagonistic love interest looks like a baby Miles Teller. Very distracting, how this episode was supposed to have taken place over a short period of time but was obviously filmed in two stages that were many months apart. That's the tricky thing about ending a story with a cliffhanger, when your cast is still growing. At least Harry Potter movies had a gap of a year or two between release dates.
  25. "In her older years" makes me think of a different age bracket than Sandra or Charlize. I don't think I've ever seen a blind item about a home shopping network host before. I guess they are as well known as some reality show stars or game show hosts, though, so why not? The Weinstein revelations have been interesting from a blind item perspective because there have been casting couch rumors surrounding him for years, though in the gossip world, the talk was presented as titillating rather than terrifying. Also, he would use planted items and reports to retaliate against actresses who refused/resisted him. The whole story has just reinforced my feelings about blind items, which is to treat them with interest but skepticism about their tone and specific motivation for existing (does the item make its subject look good or bad, is it a real story that can't go on the record just yet, does the writer show a general bias for/against the presumed subject, etc.).
