  1. Not picked up for a second season. Can't say I'm surprised.
  2. ITA with those who loved the early years of Rosanne (in particular, when she was married to Tom Arnold. Whatever went on in the marriage, the show was terrific), but not so much the later years. Scroll down in the link for the video shown at the upfronts. I found it less than impressive; all clips with no sense of what's planned for the revival. https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/17/business/media/abc-upfront-presentation-advertisers.html?rref=collection%2Fsectioncollection%2Ftelevision&action=click&contentCollection=television&region=stream&module=stream_unit&version=latest&contentPlacement=10&pgtype=sectionfront
  3. Marth Collison (season 5) has a new cookbook coming out. Lots of good behind-the-scenes info. http://www.avclub.com/article/great-british-bake-s-martha-collison-polite-shows--254110
  4. Nice interview with Martha Collison (season 5) about her new cookbook. Lots of good behind-the-scenes info. http://www.avclub.com/article/great-british-bake-s-martha-collison-polite-shows--254110
  5. Re the evidence tampering: I thought so initially, but after watching I'm throughly confused and would appreciate any clarification. And, as a general rant: Once, just once, I've love to see someone come into conflict with the Reagan's and NOT be portrayed as a flaming asshole! There, I feel better.
  6. One thing that stuck out was that in all the scenes with Sheilagh and her roommate that they never showed the woman's husband visiting her.
  7. Appreciate the new forum. Is there any way to merge the two discussions? Or, at least move this discussion from Masterpiece to Home Fires? And, thanks!
  8. Exactly! I've been struggling to articulate this distinction for years. Thanks. I think the same distinction could be make between Blue Bloods and Law and Order.
  9. And, I meant to add: with so many characters, the storytelling barely scratches the surface; and so few episodes, there's not nearly enough time for characters to work through their challenges and beyond -- can't even see the possibilities of what that might be.
  10. Even if the show continued, six-episode seasons are simply not enough time to fully develop that many characters and their stories. So, we never got to emotionally engage with these characters. Plus, all of the stories are so unrelentingly bleak, with no joyous moments or flashes of humor.
  11. My local station (Boston) is airing the news @ 11. Any idea when CBS will air this episode?
  12. Point take re racial and ethnic stereotyping. Lord knows they do plenty of that on their own. The larger question is why the Reagan brothers always seemed to be partnered with women from troubled backgrounds. Wasn't Baez's brother a drug addict? And IIRC, isn't Eddie's father in prison? So, in addition to missing an opportunity to bring in a character of color, the writers are simply tweak a recycled plot point rather than considered the possibilities.
  13. I never fail to be amazed by how many opportunities this show manages to squander. So many possibilities to be explored with Erin facing her ex in court, but what do we get: he's seeing a hot young thing until he's not. The judge ignored all of Erin's objections, seeming to unfairly favor Jack; why? And the crucial evidence just disappears. Again, why? A lot of possibilities, but no real payoff. And, while I'm not a huge Nicki fan, it would have been nice to see a scene between her and her father. Another thing that has always bothered me. With the exception of Marisa Ramirez, the regular cast is lily white. Why not make Jamie's new partner a woman of color instead of another blond?
  14. CBS broke in with news of the Syria attack; please fill in what happened after the brother arrived.
  15. Echoing all of those who miss the written recaps and comment. Just don't have 30 minutes to listen to a podcast when it only takes a few minutes to read.
  16. So few coments... Well, I liked it! I particularly loved how the scenes between Rogelio and Mateo led to the conversation between Rogelio and Jane. His insightful observation that Jane and Petra each bring out the insecurites in the other was on the money; not just for the characters, but for all of us. Of course, the point of that conversation was for Rogelio to reveal to Jane that having another child was no longer a dealbreaker. I just wish it all hadn't happened so quickly: Jane tells Xo; Bruce figures it out and by the end of the episode Xo and Rogelio are back on track. This plot point could easily played out over an episode or two -- maybe even three. -- and allowed viewers to savor the anticipation.
  17. So, I've had a few days to absorb the episode and the rather daunting volume of comments (here and elsewhere). My initial reaction as I was watching was boredom. Frankly, I didn't care if I found out how Jack died in this episode. The circumstances of his death are not what kept me tuning in every week. (Props to whoever mentioned the possibility that fan interest was what drove how the show pitched itself. After all, the writers set a high bar for big plot twists in the pilot:). What kept me watching was how the characters and their stories connected at the various stages of their lives. And that's what was missing in this episode. Had Jack and Rebecca's argument been interspersed with Randall, Kate and Kevin's stories, I don't think there would have been this much blowback (although I have to say, the relatively even numbers of Jack and Rebecca supporters indicate that the writers pretty much nailed the emotional authenticity). What it comes down to, as a friend pointed out to me: "The show broke its implicit contract with viewers; it was a bait-and-switch." As for shooting all the episodes before any air, I'm of two minds: Sometimes fan response is on the mark; sometimes it's not. However, I do wonder if this episode was still in production when "Memphis" aired. I doubt it, but I don't know why the writers would have thought that an episode centered around Jack and Rebecca's relationship would work, given the ensemble nature of the storytelling. To go outside the ensemble model, an episode would have to be as good as "Memphis" and this one wasn't even close. These past few days have left me drained, so I'm out of words (for now:) Okay, a few more thoughts. Another source of the blowback was how unrelentlingly dark this episode was. Sad as "Memphis" was, it wasn't dark; there were moments of humor and joy. "Moonshadow" was one emotional body blow after another: Jack and his parents; the poker game (which went on way too long); the fight in Cleveland; Jack contemplating robbing the bar with a character we never saw before (and likely won't again); then the final fight at home. Too much darkess and not enough hope. And, I shed not a tear. While it might have worked as an episode in the middle of the season (maybe), it was no way to end the first season. Don't know what the writers were thinking.
  18. Some interesting thoughts from Todd VadDerWerff @ Vox http://www.vox.com/culture/2017/3/14/14913062/this-is-us-finale-recap-review-nbc http://www.vox.com/culture/2017/3/15/14932304/this-is-us-finale-recap-moonshadow-jack-dies
  19. Actually kind of sorry to see this one go. The supporting cast was terrific, and there were plenty of emotions to mine in the backstory they laid out (was really looking forward to seeing Elliot Gould and Judith Light). But, the weak link was always going to be Katherine Heigl; she simply doesn't have the acting chops, and frankly, I don't think she ever will.
  20. Indelible image: Donald Trump tweeting in all caps during his 5am bowel movement.
  21. Me too... Seven days should be plenty of time for 10 episodes.
  22. The rich backstory provides the makings of a great show. I'm just not sure Katherine Heigl has the acting chops to fully plumb the emotional depths. But, I'm in, at least for a few more episodes. I'll put my thoughts re the defendent's insistance on a blood test in spoiler:
  23. Just saw this: richard hatch RIP Phil and Tara -- so many memories...
