  1. From the Pilot episode thread: ITA. I enjoyed Broadchurch because the acting was so good, and it was a very atmospheric show (like an English 'cozy' mystery) but the actual plot? Eh. There were a ton of good suspects - which made me think that was one really creepy English village - and any one of them could have been picked at random. That the killer was someone who was not a previous or obvious suspect left me a little deflated.
  2. Mom and daughter had so many confessionals where they were calm and collected I was pretty sure they wouldn't be eliminated. I wondered about the Express Pass, too. I thought they were supposed to search for the express pass at The Bear pub, not just walk up across the street from it and have someone hand it to them. Actually searching might mean more than one team would go for it and it wouldn't necessarily be first come, first served.
  3. Not sure if the Xfinity listings count as media, but the description of tonight's episode says the teams are in London . Added the spoiler bars since it came as quite a surprise to me.
  4. I think the issue is remaking a British show into an American show, and hiring an all American cast, with the exception of the male lead who has a Scottish accent IRL and must now use an American accent for the remake. I expect I will get used to it after a while, but it is grating to me (I watched Broadchurch but not Dr Who) to see David Tennant and hear him speaking in the 'wrong' accent. I wouldn't have that problem if they had hired any other actor for the role.
  5. You know it's been an interesting episode when no one even mentions Christian until the middle of the 2nd page!
  6. In response to a question upthread, in the early seasons route clues were sometimes very vague. In season 1 there was a clue that told them to go to 'the smoke that thunders' and it turned out to be Victoria Falls (they were already in Zimbabwe or Zambia). And somewhere in seasons 1-3 there was at least one clue that was simply a postcard with a country's flag and they had to figure out the country and that they had to take a ferry there (but no one went to the wrong country). However, what has happened since then is that now practically everyone has a smartphone and it's easy to find a bystander to help figure out a difficult clue. I wish they would find some new way to make the route clues more difficult on occasion. As for having a compass in your watch, if he was allowed to take it on the race, it can't have been a restricted item. Aren't the teams given a very detailed list of what they are not permitted to bring with them? I remember one counting task where a team brought a clicker-counter with them, and it wasn't disallowed. Personally I'd think a compass would be much handier on the race than a clicker. As for the last 3 teams quitting the task, I cut them a little slack given that the longer you were at it, the more physically tiring it was and they had to have been going something like 36 to 48 hours straight without any sound sleep (save the airplane trip from NYC) at that point. Undoubtedly yet another reason I will never go on TAR.
  7. I don't think all the chests were buried at the same depth. The one the dentist found was so shallow it looked like you could find it from a rectangular depression in the sand, but most of the others seemed to be buried much deeper. Does anyone know why Miss 'the sun sets in the East' chose to measure the yardage by crawling along in the sand?
  8. Maybe I'm reading way too much into this, but when Phil was describing 'The Save', it really sounded as if - theoretically - Phil could tell a team they were the last team to arrive, they would declare they were using their save, and Phil could then say, 'Thanks, I'll take that and oh, by the way it's a non-elimination round'.
  9. It also looked like everyone's skirt was higher in the back, which was driving me crazy. I have no problem with getting an extra 10 minutes with the broken zipper considering it was a 'real person' and not a model. What I don't understand is why Tim didn't just give everyone 10 extra minutes. Even if they didn't have emergency repairs to make I'm sure all of them could have used the extra time - thoughtfully.
  10. I must be acquiring a little bit of knowledge from these shows. As soon as I see a hand going into a pocket when it doesn't have to, especially the one away from the audience while the magician's patter continues non-stop, I go 'Switch!'.
  11. I understand that this is site policy, and it may have worked in the past with a smaller membership, but in a post TWoP world with a show as popular as Downton, I think it's going to be both chaotic and inherently unfair to American viewers, who I assume form the majority of members. If I don't want to be spoiled, I will have to stay out of this forum entirely until January, and even then I will have to be careful and only view the threads for episodes that have aired in the U.S. I think having separate UK and US forums (I tried using 'fora' but the spell checker doesn't recognize that word) would be a much better idea. Certainly site policy should be able to evolve with the times. Just my $.02.
  12. Well, we know for sure that they will be on different tribes to start with. Maybe they have different, less abrasive personalities when they are separated. One can only hope. ETA: That's one spoiler wrong. Let's hope the other twin goes next.
  13. While there are many things that bother me about this show, there are 2 that I have seen discussed yet. First, it seems inherently unfair to cast married people without their spouses. The singles can (and apparently have) hook up at will, but the married people have to wait for their occasional brief conjugal visits. So I don't think it's unreasonable for Red to suggest his wife be brought into the compound permanently. The second thing is the portion sizes of the food. I know I'd be fighting tooth and claw to get my fair share of the food and I'd be mightily pissed and vocal about people getting more than their share. Why have none of these yahoos thought about investing in a measuring scoop (or some other measured serving item) that can be used to ensure fair portions?
  14. What I don't understand is where the $50M is supposed to have gone. Certainly that compound can't have cost that much, even in California.
  15. Looks like the National Geographic channel was doing a mini-marathon rerunning all of the aired episodes tonight. Don't know if that's going to be a regular thing or not. NG must be seriously hard up for shows.
  16. For him to make $5 for a 'hemp bracelet' it would have to be a pretty good variety of hemp.
  17. They need two vets for two cows and a handful of chickens? If that's the kind of spending they're doing, no wonder this show cost Fox $50M.
  18. I guess if this is the live feed there's no host or voice-overs to give explanations, but can anyone figure out from the context why suddenly a new guy has been added to the mix without any of the trial period / vote who-ha? Is he just a replacement for Dave? Dave's still gone, right?
  19. I watched this show in reverse, that is I caught the last little bit live when Morgan & West won, and then went back and watched the show from the beginning. So coming in to their performance I figured it must be pretty spectacular. Instead I saw the most boring act ever, including West's pack-switch-that-wasn't-a-pack-switch when Jonathan Ross walked in front of him (something that I've picked up from watching all these damn magic shows). In fact, I had to laugh when the first thing Penn said was 'We saw your really bad pack switch' and when West denied it said 'Well, did you purposely do a really bad pack switch in order to mislead us?' I don't think that West had to be feeding Morgan any info on which card was held up. Now that I understand why he was throwing out cards at random intervals, Morgan could have easily memorized the sequence of the 'fixed pack' much as Penn did with the nail gun at the end of the show. If there is an independent judge on this show to verify that P&T do know how a particular trick was performed, I hope that judge took the win away from M&W. Since this show was filmed at least 3 years ago, does anyone know if M&W went to Las Vegas.
  20. When I glanced at the channel guide on Sunday, I thought that it was the 1st of 3 (total) episodes, not the 1st of 3 parts of the premier.
  21. Please don't dis Siberia - at least it was watchable. I was even hoping for a second season because I really wanted explanations for all the strange shit that was going on.
  22. I've been reading the recaps of the live feed, which are hilarious. I tried to watch the first episode that aired, but didn't last past 10 minutes because it's obvious that these people don't have any chance of getting along with each other. I was very surprised to see the amount of intervention by Production. I don't see the point of this show being advertised as a 'social experiment' if you can go crying to Mommy and Daddy all the time.
  23. I would ding Glen just a bit because his knight was so much bigger than his king, and that's not the way actual chess pieces are (that I'm familiar with). The discussion was pretty much 'Wayne can do huge sculpts, I'll have him do a humongous horse's head'. Considering that McKenzie announced in the first episode that 'This season is all about life and death!', has anyone else noticed that they only bring that theme out when they want to? Like, this is the first time since that first episode? I don't feel that Neville's 2 pieces were any more cohesive than the other sets. I don't think the detail work in the pawn was matched at all in the bishop. I would have given the win to Ve for her queen. It was nice to see how many of the truly talented contestants on the show have gotten work in the industry (particularly with Ve); it proves what many of us have felt about Face Off being one really long audition.
  24. Why is it that I have no memory of Wayne ever competing on this show? Can someone remind me of something memorable that he did in his season?
  25. Several things make this show less than entertaining for me. First, there is an obvious time-lag while the teams are developing their routine that we never get to see. It's unclear how long the show is for the live audience. I think that most likely both teams create the 2nd routine (the one where they compete against the wizards), although only the team winning the first stage will use it. Also, most of the routines are so ragged that one really does appreciate what goes into a smooth performance. I wish that instead of getting the same 3 or 4 props to use there was a larger pool of items from which the teams could alternate picks. Lastly, whose team had the winning performance is completely subjective, based on whether P&T liked it. I don't see the need to have a group of established wizards that the teams have to ultimately beat to win. It's only $10K, let's just have a competition where somebody wins every show.
