To Tell The Truth - General Discussion
ajsnaves replied to Meredith Quill's topic in To Tell The Truth
I am a criminal defense attorney in Wisconsin. Every time I have to run a client's driving record, or check to see when a client can reinstate his or her driver's license, a video pops up of the fastest texter telling me not to text and drive It is annoying, and it has been happening for the last few few years now. Needles to say I got that one right away. The rest I just went with my gut when first seeing them, and did pretty well. I love Betty White, and love that she is part of this show. I wish GSN still showed old eps. -
S02.E01: And The Drowned Book / S02.E02: And The Broken Staff
ajsnaves replied to Tara Ariano's topic in The Librarians [V]
How can I not like a show that knows the difference between "The Queen of Hearts" and "The Red Queen", two separate and distinct characters. It always bothers me when they are rolled into one. Add in the discussion of the difference between book Frankenstein's monster and movie monster, they get extra points. Although, shouldn't it have been Frankenstein's Creature, not monster? -
Since when is Comedy Central playing SNL reruns? I go from my DVR to live to seeing the Drake episode from a few years ago. (Actually I hear what I assume is the news, since I'm not paying attention, and think "Didn't SNL do a joke meth dealers selling blue meth like on Breaking Bad?") I hope they dig a little deeper into the vault, and play some 80's and 90's episodes. Speaking of 90s episodes, tomorrow night's classic episode is the Michael Jordan ep from 1991. I remember enjoying that one.

A few years ago a cousin, who is raising three boys, came up to me and asked when my brother and I stopped fighting. I told her it was when he moved to a different state. It is amazing what a few area codes between you can do for a sibling relationship. I've always thought that if Edith would just move to London, she and Mary would start to form a better relationship based on being adults, not the children they act like now. To Edith, Mary is still the bullying domineering older sister. To Mary, Edith is still the sneaky sniveling little sister. Neither one is an adult woman is the eyes of the other person. Because neither one had to change and see the other one, or themselves really, as an adult for her sister. Edith needs to move to London, and not come back for a year. Except for Robert's funeral, which will obviously be in a few months. It was so nice to see Gwen again. It is nice to see that even after all these years, Sybil can still shame the Crawley's a bit. If only they could have worked in the line "You know nothing Jon Snow."

Documentary Now! - General Discussion
ajsnaves replied to Meredith Quill's topic in Documentary Now!
It sounds like they will be airing next week's episode, "Kunuk Uncovered" tonight. I was actually look forward to this one, so its nice to get it a week early. -
I think he has 9 episodes left this season, for a total of 35 episodes. (Unless Wikipedia is lying to me. Which is just too horrible a thought to entertain.) Being gay, this was an issue I am better informed about that many of the other issues, and it still surprises and depresses me to hear these things. Particularly the doctor refusing to treat the baby of the lesbian couple, which I read about when it first happened, but forgot. There is just so much wrong with that, and it angers up the blood. One note, John;s map of states that can discriminate is a bit misleading. Some of those states have protections for LGBs, but not trans. I know Wisconsin has a strong anti-discrimination law for LGBs, but lacks anything for Trans people.

I stand corrected on the number of episodes issue. I could have sworn 20 episodes was standard for the last 30 years at least, but it look like for a number of years recently it was 22. I still think it is a quality, energy issue, and those extra episodes are just not worth it. Then again, it is not like the quality has been phenomenally high lately to begin with.
-
I don't think they have done 22 episodes for years. It is probably the same reason they don't do 4 episodes in a row if they can avoid it. The burn out level is tremendous the extra shows would probably suck. Sometimes I also wonder if sometimes they have trouble finding hosts. It seems like they are announcing hosts closer and closer to when the episodes air, particularly in the January/February episodes.

The only thing missing was the actual results of Abstinence Only education. I don't remember much about my sex ed other than it came from the my school's Home Economics teacher Mrs. Berg. Sweet old lady. Taught me how to cook, sew, and put on condom. (Not personally of course.) She talked about the mechanics of sex, different types of birth control and their effectiveness, and other things I am sure. I seem to recall that she recommended the sponge as the best option for birth control aside from condoms. (I guess I remember more than I thought.) The most important thing she taught was not to be ashamed of our changing bodies and urges. That it is natural. That the best way to avoid getting pregnant or an STD is abstinence, but if you do have sex, be safe. And NO MEANS NO!

I think one of the problems is that there are really three different dates to look for. Use by/expiration dates, are dates that the item should be used by, and I would not trust it much past that date. I would put meat in that category. Sell by dates are the when the store will pull the perishable items off the shelf, probably after it is discounted for a day or two. The items are still good, and can be consumed for some time after that date. For example milk, eggs, and other dairy and packaged breads. Milk will usually be good for at least a week, and eggs can last several weeks after the sell by date. (Put them in water, if they float, they're bad). Finally they have "Best By" dates, which are what appear on most non-perishable items. That is when your pasta sauce will not taste as good as it is supposed to. A few weeks ago I bought a six pack of bottled soda. I drank one, and it tasted a bit off. I looked and it "expired" a few days earlier. That means it sat on a shelf for a few months. Still good, but not as good as a bottle from the next six pack which have a Sept. 29th date. Most "best by" dates are completely fine as long as the package is not damaged. These are the things I learned working in a grocery store for 15 years. However, most people do not know what those dates mean, or how to interpret them. Even I will sometimes err on the side of caution. When all else fails, I just ask my Mom if she would use it. The answer is usually yes.

I was thinking the same thing. Unless they decide to use a wig.

The purpose of bail is to assure future appearance in court. Not to punish. The guy had not been convicted of anything yet. We don't know if he actually was guilty. And a $1,000 cash bail for a non violent traffic offense is unreasonable. Without more information, like he was a flight risk in some way, or he has a bad history on bail, there is no reason someone should he held in custody for that. And certainly not on a high cash bail.

I practice criminal defense in one of the few states that don't have bail bonds services or allows bounty hunters. Twice in the last four years the Republican Legislature tried to change the law to allow them to move in, and there was near unanimous opposition to this idea from all five players in the criminal justice system. The chance of getting prosecutors, the defense bar, judges, law enforcement and corrections, and court clerks to agree on anything in this state that does not include how awesome the Green Bay Packers are is ridiculously low. That is how much we hated this idea. Of course that did not stop the Legislature from ignoring everyone's opinions and going forward with it. Fortunately the Governor vetoed it. And they didn't try again this year. Bail can still be a problem, but at least we don't have to worry about some mulleted guy busting down doors with a camera crew. (Well unless they are actually cops)

Like other, this is the reason Charles Guiteau came to me right away. That and the book Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell. But it was mostly NPH and Sondheim. I am sad to see Dan go, but the new guy doesn't bother me. At least not yet. Frankly as long as they don't hop around the board and choose in the middle of the category, I am happy lately.

I didn't get Gregory Peck either, but I think because it was a younger picture than I know him. If it would have been Atticus Finch, I would have gotten it is a second. I cannot believe a man who spends as much time in Wisconsin as Aaron Rogers didn't think of Harley Davidson. I was impressed with how efficient he was though. I think without Aaron moving so quickly, they would have only gone through half the board each round.

Nineteen Eighty-something: Anachronisms, and Cultural Touchstones
ajsnaves replied to Kromm's topic in The Goldbergs
While I agree that the whole nineteen eighty something works for this show, there are some stumbling blocks. For me it is when they include individual, historical events such as the recent 1984 election or Charles and Di's wedding. When you use particular events it can be jarring when you mix it with other pop culture things that occurred at a significantly different time. If they would have used the 88 election with Bush and Dukakis, I would not have batted an eye to including The American Gladiators, even if they would be about a year apart. So, if they are going to mix history and pop culture is some episodes, I think they need to take a little more care to keep them at least close to each other. -
I don't know why, but I laugh whenever someone says "Dave Kim." Particularly if they are yelling at him. The Princess Bride is one of my favorite movies, (and an even better book) so anything that references it is a big plus for me. And I too wanted to take fencing because of that movie. But I never did. Maybe I should look into that. Along with my banjo lessens.
-
What felt off to me about this episode was that there were two very distinctly dated items that separated by a number of years. American Gladiators (which was pretty awesome) premiered in 1989. And the 1984 presidential election was in, well 1984. Disparate dating of events never really bothered me, but this time it jumped out and took me out of the episode. Separately I enjoyed the story-lines. Together it didn't work for me. And maybe all these years later, I am still saddened by Mondale losing so spectacularly. I was one sad 7 year old.

I thought it was great. And the reason why is because everyone seemed to be having a good time. Beck always seems aloof to me, and he seemed no different here. But he seemed to enjoy playing hide and seek. Jeff Goldblume might be my favorite talk show guest. And Reggie Is just a ball of energy. I will say that if someone brought a snake into my house, there would be a me shaped hole in the wall. Big enough for everyone to escape through.
