TDS 3.0: Season Three Talk
Temperance replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
Trevor was hardly to first the catch the portrait of Andrew Jackson. Yes, Trump making fun of Elizabeth Warren was bad, but he was hardly the first. Scott Brown started that mess when he ran against her for the senate in 2012. And he was supposedly a moderate. I never could understand why he took the low brow road he did. It didn't work all that well in Massachusetts. He also made fun of her going to Harvard and being educated. I would never make fun of major brand/business/cultural icon of the place I was running to represent. I don't follow Miss Universe and Trumps owns it, but congrats to Miss South Africa. -
Re: Jill's Face in the last picture with her kids and the laundry and the piercing, everybody under forty on my facebook feed posts pictures of themselves making that face. Under forty, eyes wide, mouth agape, especially more popular in "candid" shots. It's also used in group selfies. When I googled it, it's called the Faux Surprised Face and all the "cool" kids are doing it. The Duggars apparently pay attention to selfie facial expression trends, Jessa does the duckface pout in her pregnancy selfies. I'm not sure what the face Jill is making is about, but I'm millenial and I still want them off my lawn.

Go Jill go Jill! If that's a nose ring, it works for her!

Except most young people are confirmed before they're out of high school (and sometimes before high school) and would have significant parental pressure to be confirmed. Several of my friends' parents would NOT have been okay with their kids chosing not to be confirmed.

People dress like Jill and Derick at the heathen Catholic Church I grew up at. But usually they dress up if their kid is going to be baptized, which is pretty much what this is like. We, Catholics, use the same grandiose language of rejecting satan and whatnot during Baptism. Catholics parents, and the godparents actually do promise to raise their kids in the way God wants. You can look up the ceremony for a Catholic baptism for infants to see what it's like on the web. On Jill's clothes, I wonder if she feels she has to be more covered in the house of the lord. She looks like Michelle in that outfit. I'm not familiar with swaddling, and I don't think I've ever seen anyone do it, except on tv. According to google, most people stop swaddling when the kids is 3-4 months old.

@Marigold I'm so sorry for your loss. On the one hand, we tend not to travel for Thanksgiving. If we had said we would be there, we would. I have people in my life who would do that. At present two very close acquaintances are fighting over the death of a family member. It's really sad and upsetting. I do feel a little sorry for the parents, as its' hard to lose a child (not a parent myself, but I've known who are and have lost kids.) Other family members, especially the parents may feel a large sense of guilt as well as grief. They may feel they could have done something to keep this from happening either now or even when he was a kid. And of course seeing his family in person may increase the guilt. Guilt or not, his parents had a rough thanksgiving. Grief, like depression, can be flare up, and our priest always told us it was hard all throughout the first year, especially in a month or two when condolence calls become fewer and fewer. I'm glad you were there for his wife and family. I'm sure it helped.

Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp
Temperance replied to frenchtoast's topic in Counting On
Anna would hardly be the only woman the Duggars know who has homebirths. There have always been fundies who do homebirths. And right now homebirths are a growing trend. Many women they might know from a church or from various gathering etc. might be having them. Jill probably went to quite a few homebirths while training to be a midwife. One of my friends is college-educated and was talking about having a homebirth. She has better prenatal care, but it still makes me nervous. Her family seems normal, but is kind of fundie-lite and reminds of the Duggars. One of her friends is doula who likes the idea of a homebirth as well, but so far neither of these ladies have done it. The doula has been at several homebirths, and actually talked about one where the woman had really fast labor (the point seemed to be encouraging others to have homebirths). Joy will probably have a homebirth if she can. -

I don't think that's true. It still covers all the kids depending on their age. It's just the price went way up. -
They only started to vacinate chicken pox recently (90s). IIRC the Duggars didn't use that vacine. In the early years or specials, the little kids had chicken pox, and they asked the cameraman or someone in the production team to verify that's normal and he was slightly embarrassed about being asked and muttered "I couldn't say." JB and MIchelle are young enough, they were vaccinated for polio and a few other diseases. I think they may have vaccinated their kids the same way they were vaccinated hence chicken pox rather than the vaccine. I would think they were warned about vaxxing/nonvaxxing when Josie was born as very young premie. (Children with severe health concerns are often told to be extra-careful to avoid these diseases as it's more likely to turn deadly).

Joy and Austin: This One Time At Family Camp

I don't watch the show, but that moment when Joy "it's up to Austin and my dad" when talking about whether to enter into a courtship was so sad. I think everything is still up to Austin and her dad from where they live to whether or not she gets prenatal care to the size of their family. Plenty of ignorant or none too bright people have aspirations and hopes and their own opinions. I hope she finds her own voice, but getting married so young can have squelching effect. -
Jill doesn't look clingy to me, but it could be just because she looking into the camera smiling instead of looking into his face adoringly.
-
Yeah that's not Josie. It's probably 2007 or 2006. I think that's Josh sitting at the end of the table near all his sisters and holding hands Jessa or Jill?

The Lonely Js Club: James, Jackson & Johannah

If you read the blog, they recommend a seminar from the I. B. L. P. The IBLP is the Institute Basic of Living Principles, which belongs to.... Bill Gothard! Remember JB grilling Derick about what to do about bad money situations and how even if he had medical bills and whatnot, he wouldn't go into debt? This is exactly the same thing and I do agree with you about how people have to spend money on the necessities. Bill Gothard, like a lot of fundie leaders, have many ideas that sound okay until you think them through as well as some terrible ones. -
They standing close together and they both have one arm touching the other, but they don't look particularly together somehow.

Hey, so I don't like to post here too often and I mostly stay on topic, but I just wanted to say I'm so thankful for previouslytv, this forum, and y'all. (I'm not a Southern can I use y'all ya think?) Anyway I appreciate this forum so much as a place to focus on rather than the world, which seems rather dark these days. I enjoy hearing your insight and seeing the links you post. (I'm not sure I know how to post links or videos the way you do.) Sometimes I come off more severe than I intend and I always notice something in my posts I want to edit, but I enjoy reading stuff so much. Anyway thanks for everything.

In my mind when you're a celebrity, even a C-list celebrity and especially a lifestyle celebrity I would expect a big public announcement. Telling someone at a wedding isn't an announcement even when they tell other people. That explains a lot. If she thinks she'll "go late", they probably are worried she'll face the same criticism as her sisters and that's why they aren't making a public announcement. She probably has the same level of care. Sigh. It also seems that more people are speculating about whether she did anything before marriage which may boost ratings. Especially if there's no new courtship. -
She will probably be pregnant sooner or later. She married a Duggar. The recent trend started by Jessa (right before Joshgate) is to wait until they're three months pregnant to announce. Kendra and Joe haven't been married for three months yet. Then again Jinger was hiding strategically so we couldn't tell if she was pregnant or not. Also, it's dumb to hide a woman who is less than three months. What does that even look like? I've had friends who've lost weight due to morning sickness in the beginning.

I doubt they can fire Dan for the words of his brother and mother. It would however making working there incredibly awkward and uncomfortable for him, so everything else you said works.
-
Yes, Johannah is about 12. There is a lonely J thread is devoted to singles which are as you said the two sets of twins and Josiah.

I don't remember a formal announcement. It would be her nine months anniversary so it's possible wikipedia just guessed she's having a honeymoon baby. -
Yes, according to the internet, that's where it comes from. Also what I thought too.
-
Kendra's parents have 7 kids (and counting?). I doubt any of the Duggar kids have any of their own ideas about birth control and whatnot. Right now he's dependent on JB and Michelle, and I'm not sure what options he has. That said it's their lives, so maybe they can learn to make their own choices.
