Father Brown - General Discussion

I've been watching the old episodes, and I had forgotten how much more I enjoyed them when we had Lady Felicia and Sid.

Bunty just doesn't really work for me. I feel like they tried to combine some of the characteristics of Felicia; flirt, men fall over themselves for her, has money, butts heads with Mrs. M, and characteristics of Sid; good with cars, rebel, picks locks, likes to get into trouble, and none of it really works.

Felicia and Sid they just worked better and IMO are better actors than Bunty. In The Skylark Scandal, I found myself wishing that the actress playing Hetty had been cast as Bunty.

I've been keeping an eye on Mrs. McCarthy's hats, and she always wears one at the Presbytery and almost everywhere else.  There were a few scenes where she was in the hospital, and didn't wear one there, natch.  However, there's a great scene in Crackpot of the Empire where she's out of the hospital and back at the Presbytery recovering from having been poisoned, snoozing and snoring to beat the band, while Lady Felicia is reading a scorching lesbian porn novel.  Well, Mrs. M is back to wearing her hat even while napping.  Also, there was a scene at her home with her husband, and she wasn't wearing a hat there either.

Just thought you all would want to know. 🙂

Yes, sometimes she does, but I seem to remember her hatless as she worked around the kitchen.  I may just have to watch the series from the beginning to watch out for other scenes with the missing hat.

Quoting myself here because I didn’t believe that Mrs. McCarthy always* is shown with a hat.  I had a good laugh at myself when I saw her wear a sleep bonnet in the episode with her sister and the gypsy.  Even at night she has a head covering.

*with the exception of the scenes mentioned above

Finally watched Tower of Lost Souls (S8, Ep 10) & now one of my favorite episodes.
Enjoyed seeing the return of CI Valentine & CI Sullivan (same with any Sid & Lady Felicia eps). Their various interactions & reactions with/to Mallory were priceless, as is their deference to FB during the investigation. The scene at the end between Valentine & FB was perfect.

Does anyone know what bee book Father Brown is reading in series 8 episode 2 ‘The Queen Bee’ Thanks...

I just started watching season 8 and kept an eye out for this. I think he was reading The Life of the Bee by Maurice Maeterlinck: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/22394568-the-life-of-the-bee

Watched S8 E5 The Folly Of Jephthah... I swear Flambeau daughter is a different actress! I found her not a very good actress. I hope this is the only time we see her.  I was afraid there that the actor playing Flambeau didn't want to play the character anymore, so they were going to have him lose the bet and the daughter would be the new thief we had to deal with.

Per IMDB, she's back in S9E8 and S9E10. I think the last episode ("The Red Death") is their 100th. According to the IMDB trivia section, it's the first time since S6E5 ("The Face of the Enemy") that Father B. appears with all of his sidekicks (Mrs. McCarthy, Bunty, Lady Felicia, and Sid.)

Lady Felicia and Flambeau show up in a couple of episodes as well. And Cyril from "Call the Midwife" plays another man of the cloth in one of the new episodes.

We watched a couple of episodes from Season 9 yesterday.  Pretty obviously filmed during Covid, based on the social distancing in most of the scenes.

I don't miss Bunty.  At all.  I like Sid, but that 21st Century scruffy look just makes guys in the 20th Century look unkempt.

I did guess the bad people about 5 minutes into the "Mrs. M gets poisoned" episode.

They won't show up on my Britbox until they have aired on the local PBS station. Maybe that's true for your area?

They are releasing two new episodes from Season 9 every Tuesday, but this week’s episodes aren’t available yet.  Thank goodness for Britbox, cause if I had to wait for my PBS station to show them it could be next year🙄😂

Second that, except I wouldn’t see them at all…as my local has never aired them! I’ve just finished S9, E5. Have to agree, a bit flat, but still enjoyable. Never was fond of the cult episodes, but I had to laugh at Father Brown’s wellies from the closet changing into full-on hip waders when he got to the pond!

Season 9, Episode 8 (Wayward Girls)

This has to be my favorite episode ever.  No annoying Inspector Mallory, Mrs. McCarthy or Sid.  Instead, Sgt Goodfellow investigates, although (of course) it is Father Brown and Bunty who solve the case.  Speaking of Bunty - she is my favorite character, she brightens up every scene and, boy, she is absolutely stunning.
