S06.E02: Go-Go Boots and a Butt Cushion

Susan Rattan's voice made her instantly recognizable to me, and I didn't even watch L.A. Law; I've seen her in other things and that show was so well-known in its day I knew the cast's names and associated them with it regardless.  I didn't know Sam McMurray (Ned) by name - I had to look him up - but by face I recognized him from about a dozen different things.  He's a total Hey, It's That Guy character actor to me.

Bonnie is absolutely the person who would let a blind guy drive.  “Let me check with my cancer.  What do you think, boss?  Mr. Prostate says we’ve got to go.”  Heh.

I'd have rather Christy been a cucumber than a pickle, because I'm tired of all alcoholics on TV being addicted to everything (except caffeine and nicotine, because their AA buddies always find mainlining coffee and cigarettes perfectly fine without ever raising the question of dependency, but smoke a joint or place a bet and they freak their shit), but I liked the GA characters.

This was a rather so-so episode to me, though.  I don't even have specific reasons why, but it was just okay.

I think my issue with the GA story is that we already had a story last season of Jill trying and failing moderation.  It was even in the second half of last season so it felt a bit "been there/done that" in terms of story.

The feeling on this is changing but for a long time people in drug treatment programs were actively encouraged not to stop smoking because it was too difficult on top of stopping narcotics and that smoking was less harmful than drug use.   Recent studies have shown that addicts who also quit smoking had less instances of recurrence than smokers, but getting that change of philosophy to take has been slow because for so long drug users were actively discouraged from trying to quit smoking.  .

I can get behind Christy being addicted to gambling; I was kinda hoping she wasn't but seeing how she's gotten into such trouble in the past, it totally makes sense. I just don't want to see another group of addicts on a regular basis.

I loved how Bonnie and all the gals showed up to stop Christy from gambling. I consider it a win, since she still has the money. I wonder if we'll find out what she does with it?

Thanks for reminding me who Susan Ruttan was. I knew she looked familiar.

Sort of one of their "serious" shows, and while it was a nice effort it fell a little flat because it feels like we already covered this. It also feels like they are trying to shoehorn Yvette Nicole Brown into this show, and that's a shame because she deserves a bigger part on another show. Jill, Marjorie and Wendy already have too little to do as it is, so they don't need another sidekick. It sort of feels like Brown has a contract with CBS and when they cancelled The Odd Couple the network just stuck her on here.

I remember the reference to the butt cushion but who mentioned go-go boots in this episode?

Yeah, but hardcore addicts - especially those with Addictive Personality Disorder (like Christy and Bonnie) - will rationalize everything to the nth degree.  She didn't see the fall-out from gambling the same way she did from drinking and drugs, so in her mind, it wasn't as bad and wasn't a problem because "there were only 3 or 4 really bad incidents", plus she felt she wasn't "as bad" as the other addicts she met there.  There were things my husband thought he could moderate after abstaining for years, and he found out the hard way that he just can't.  Someone he knew from AA, who had been to prison for a bad DUI and had her kids taken away once told me that she was pretty convinced she would be able to drink in moderation "soon".  I told her to think about her kids, who she had just gotten back.  She didn't seem to get the message so I sent her a link to a documentary about a closeted drunk who killed people in an accident, and how deep denial runs, and she thanked me for the wakeup call.  He doesn't see her at meetings anymore because of her work schedule, but I often wonder how she's doing.

But it was obvious that Christy was a pickle. We had seen several instances in the earlier seasons where she gambled money that she needed to use for more pressing things (rent, Bonnie's bail) and try to justify the behavior because she was going to use her winnings to make her life better. Even after she lost all money, or cherished gift from the women close to her or got her family kicked out of her home, she didn't want to see that her and gambling were bad for her.

It's not the concept of the story I object to but the fact that it's something they just did 6 months ago.  Like maybe wait a year and use Jill's experience to highlight how risky it is.  They never even talked about jill.

I thought this was the best Christy-centric storyline the show has done in a long long time.  It was exceptionally true to her nature and how she reacts to things.  When Bonnie had her relaps Christy went to her “happy place” which was a casino.  I was always curious when the show would tackle Christy and her tendincy to gamble away her stress and make more stress.

Charles Robinson who works a lot these days.  He's also been on a couple of episodes of This is Us this year.
