I thought the S9 trailer was really good and looked exciting.....until I realized that the trailer was about 75% Rick, Michonne, and Maggie and all of them will likely be gone after this season.  This attrition of core characters is crippling. Losing Rick? How? I'm racking my brain trying to think of a single way to write Rick Grimes out of the show in a satisfactory way. I can't think of one. Maggie and Michonne? Both have small children. How do you write them and their children out in a credible way? Women don't just leave relative safety to just wander off on a whim into the ZA with small children in tow , and I don't find the notion of dead mothers and orphaned children to be a bit appealing. Angela Kang is going to have to write all three. I wouldn't want to be her right about now.

I read discussions that they may leave Rick's departure open ended so he could come back in the future at some time. I have complete confidence in Angela Kang to get the job done right.

I read the attached interview above in which Norman Reedus claims he won't be the new lead after Andrew Lincoln leaves.  If not, then AMC is sure overpaying him to be a minor character (20 million dollars!!!).  Either he's not telling the entire story or AMC is so desperate to hang onto his fans that they'll pay him an inordinate amount of money for a couple of minutes per episode.

@seacliffsal, the $20 million includes his biker show, but your point is well made. AMC isn't paying him all that money to just be another guy. Of course, Norman is going to be the new lead. He playing it down and doesn't want anyone accusing him of taking Andy's role.  I do expect that we will see a lot more of Michonne this season because Danai's career has blown up as a result of Black Panther. Maggie is only shown a lot in that trailer because Lauren is featured in those first few episodes to set up her departure about the same time as Rick in episode six.

So not only is MMB the only original cast member not on the panel, but it looks as if it will be yet another season of “Carol who?”  I guess it frees up MMBs time to do other things. Me as well. I just cant handle watching 45 minutes of Negan nattering on without the delight of the non-scenery chewing of Melissa to offset it.

I thought that included the Ride series too. Still, that is an awful lot of money for both shows. Some big screen actors/actresses don't even get that kind of money.

Kang did state Carol will be a part of the trio driving the show forward so we can only hope, ‘which’ Carol we see is another question, let’s see if her and The King can find some solace together.

I wouldn’t go that far, I will however give her a fair chance to get the show back on its feet. I thought it was a good trailer of a decent length for once, of course it flatters to deceive, the show’s won’t be as good as we hope and will include the usual (hopefully greatly reduced) stupidity and nonsense.

I am really looking forward to the season, mainly because I believe as much as I hope things can get better, it really will be a do or die season for the show and I can’t think how Kang’s job could have been made any harder,  if she does manage to turn things around she will deserve that star on the walk of fame!

I think she's talking about Glenn's child.

Yeah she is, I’ve just found it on YTube, I didn’t think they were allowed to give away info like that, it’s a year old and a boy,  so is it Glenn,Hershel or both? I still can’t believe they’ve let that information out without using it to enhance the story yet to come!

I fully expect Jeffrey Dean Morgan to be the lead actor following Andrew's departure from the show.  Lauren's leaving, Danai is surely not sticking around after season 9, the show doesn't give a crap about Melissa McBride, Norman Reedus can't act, and Carl 2.0 (Henry) is still too young even after the time jump.  Just sayin' it fits with the show's pathological obsession with Negan.

Killing Carl makes even less sense with a time jump.  It will never make sense for me, storywise.    But Chandler growing up is not as big of a deal if a baby that was never even a BUMP is now one year old!

Also, I always hate their time jumps because they use them to avoid actual character development and just skip to whatever plot point they are interested in.  Carl got his eye blown out, major development...TIME JUMP.  And then it's mentioned once in passing.  Now Carl actually DIES, people have a sad...TIME JUMP.  And Rick is living a new, adjusted life.  Whatever.  The deaths of the early characters really shaped the lives of the people who knew them.  Shane, Lori, Sophia, Andrea, even Dale.  It shaped what happened with the group.  You could feel their echoes up until last season.  Now they just blaze past it and shoe horn more characters in their places.   (The downslide started in season five with Beth's situation).

And, the worst of this lost legacy is keeping Negan alive after murdering Abe and Glenn.

If that's true I just can't take any more: No more of his cartoonish speech, his incessant yammering about his dick, his friggin' leaning back, his stupid baseball bat and all that crap.

Oh, I'm sure he was fine with that. The loss of an eye wouldn't be a big deal to anyone.

It may be amazing, but I couldn't watch that amazing video talking about how amazingly amazing this season will be. I have to think back to the few shows I actually thought were amazing, and strangely not one of them ( and I thank whatever PTB that none of them were on AMC) had after-shows, or mulitiple interviews or Comic Cons (I still don't know what that is) to hammer it into our heads how totally, undeniably and truly AMAZING the show was. It was left to us idiots in the viewing audience to decide that for ourselves.

I wonder if the helicopter shown again in the preview might play into anything. Maybe Rick leaves to scout or check out other communities...for a couple of seasons, ie. 3 or 4 Walking Dead days? I don't know, I just hope he survives, lol.

I’m betting Rick and Maggie are out on a patrol or scavenging run, get scooped by a deus ex machina in the form of an Apache heli, and are last seen flying off into the sunset headed towards parts unknown....

Might not even be all that dramatic. Given the glacial pace at which this show moves, he could just be out on a supply run for a couple of days, during which two or three seasons go by.

We’ve now got Lauren saying this

“I’m in the first six episodes of the show, and then a lot happens in the sixth episode of the show,” Cohan told People. “But the possibilities for how Maggie remains in the story and re-enters the story and kind of stays alive through — not physically alive — but, you know what I’m saying, are multitudinous.”

I for one haven’t got the faintest idea what your saying, stop all this BS and either tell us what’s going on or tell us nothing, it’s gettng ridiculous, a big WHATEVER is the only response to these people now.

"Kind of stays alive?" Maggie turns into a zombie but no one has the heart to put her down, so they keep her on a leash? They do put her down, but erect a momument to her at Hilltop and every Saturday there is a moment they all gather for speeches and remembrance of Our Leader? As a mischievious, boyish prank, New-Carl, I mean Sam, puts Zombie Maggie into Negan's cell? The other "multitudinous" scenarios elude me at the moment.

At night. In total darkness.  We get to play yet again, "Who's that? What's he doing? Wait! Someone got killed? Who's doing what to whom? and "Who the hell is Neil?"

I guess Cohan wants to hedge her bets in case her ABC show doesn't last.

And AMC is willing to offer her a chance to return since she plays a popular character and they need to keep the ratings up as much as possible.

Would likely mean crappy storytelling but then that wouldn't be a new thing.

Maggie turns into a zombie, so they lock her up in a shed out back and visit and play with her occasionally...?

No, wait, never mind... that’s Shaun of the Dead, dammit....

Yes, they never even have to explain where he is.  lol  He's just not around.  That's how it feels plenty of times, anyway.  I might have mentioned this before, but it could be like All My Children infamously having a teen character go up to his room to polish his skis and then just never mention him again.  Ever.

Lauren said that Maggie's departure is open-ended, but I don't buy that she is returning any time soon, maybe the series finale. Lauren quit the show because AMC wouldn't pay her and nothing has changed on that front. She continues to insist that her renegotiation demands were reasonable. It is pretty clear that she just came back to wrap up Maggie's story. If her new show flops, she will just get another one or maybe her movie career will take off.

Andy never said that his ending is open-ended. I have no idea where that has come from other than wishful thinking from some fans who have been spreading that misinterpretation of his comments. It reminds me of the denial when it leaked that Carl would die.  I expect that Rick will die. It is clear that he is injured in the trailer so I am not expecting a miraculous secret rescue of some sort.

It's all seemed like they're trying to make it vague since they didn't intend for Andy leaving to leak out like that.  Nobody's ever really said how that happened.  But I haven't really been listening to the details of what's been said.  Never has a show been talked about so much while saying so little.

I have no idea what the pay scale is on this show, but I'm willing to hazard a guess (which could be totally erroneous) that never have so many been paid so much for so little. Norman Reedus does little but stand around, mumble what may or may not be sentences and look grimy, Lauren merely has to pull her mouth down into her "Grumpy Cat" expression, Ross Marquand - well, okay, he had to roll around in the mud for more than a minute, so maybe he deserves his check. Same for whoever (name eludes me) plays Ezekial who has the burden of balancing with that giant wig in the heat, so I'll cut him a break.

Melissa McBride's mother died several days before SCDCC so she probably didn't consider attending a priority. Carol does appear in the trailer, but the first six episodes will be focused on losing Rick and Maggie so it is difficult to tell what her presence will be this season.

Well, that's sad.  Poor Melissa.  I saw a pic of the cast together and Lauren was holding up Carol's Funko Pop figure in her place, which was sweet.

I read it online somewhere, or saw it in an interview. That info on AL was out before LC had that interview the other night. Maybe it was put out by AMC so when he is killed it will be an even bigger surprise after hearing talk of an open-ended split from the show. I watched LC on JK Live the other night. Heard that from the dead girl walking mouth.  Just discussing what I heard/read. No wishful thinking here for Rick. I liked him, but I will not miss him. Personally, I like what Gobi had to say above, lol.

This, and the post above me, makes it sound like she is kept somewhere, but that's sick. I was thinking flashbacks, and how she'd always be alive through baby Hershel. The kind of things people say when you lose someone. I hope they aren't going the coma route, and did the show really need another motherless child?

AL is saying “my relationship with this part is far from over”, so what the hell does that mean? Is that six episodes worth in S9, is it a spin off series, is he taking a long break but will return? He says he can’t say anymore, we’ll as with Lauren, stop screwing with ‘Your’ fans and say more, or don’t say anything and let us find out as we watch. We get you’ve got to publicise the show and get everyone going, which would be fine if the show was worth the hype, which it isn’t at the moment, every time they come out with this crap I have a mental image of ‘The Gimp’ sitting there with that odious smirk on his ugly mug. They are taking the piss out of those of us still hanging on in there, which is not a wise thing to do when the show is teetering on the edge. Just treat us with the respect we are due after so many years of support, they’re managing to annoy the hell out of me and I never thought I would ever feel like this about the show, it’s all very well these actors sitting on a couch making light of everything and treating us like teenage girls waiting for the next word from a boy band, were adults, adults with their finger hovering over the off button!

Comedy and serious rarely work well together, her mile 22 film looks promising, no comedy hopefully, it’ll be interesting to see how she does, I liked ‘The Boy’ she was in, this is a big budget step up from that which I hope leads to more movie work, just like Danai, I want to see Melissa McBride in a new big screen venture as well.
