What's different about their deal with Netflix?

But with CEx-Gf and JtV most likely getting renewals, I dont think they will give Dynasty a full season again next year. Probably 13-16 if anything. Unless they want it to become a summer show.

The CW has been trying to become a full year Network (with new content all summer long) for awhile now. They seem to be moving further in the direction running their script drama April-June/July.

The 100 is gonna air their season finale 1 week before SDCC 2018. Supergirl is airing well into June.

Here was the report about the Dynasty Netflix deal

Quote

In a pretty unique deal for a broadcast series, Netflix has acquired global rights to the CW’s upcoming reboot of Dynasty for all international territories outside of the U.S.

I hear Netflix became involved early in the process, expressing interest in distributing the show based on its iconic title, which has global appeal, and A-list auspices in Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage.

Dynasty is produced by CBS TV Studios. The deal for the show between CBS Studios Internationaland Netflix follows a similar pact between the two companies for another reboot of a series with global name recognition: Star Trek: Discovery. The sci-fi drama, which will run on CBS’ streaming service CBS All Access in the U.S., will have Netflix as its exclusive premiere home in 188 countries (excluding the U.S. and Canada), with each episode available globally within 24 hours of its U.S. premiere.

Similarly, I hear Dynasty is expected to launch globally in the fall, premiering around the world on Oct. 11 simultaneously with its U.S. debut on the CW.

In anticipation of the Netflix deal, the Dynasty pilot was not shown to international buyers at the L.A. Screenings last month. With its heavy serialization, the soapy drama is considered a great fit for international distribution on a streaming platform.

The international deal compliments the domestic streaming pact Netflix has with the CW affiliated studios CBS TV Studios and Warner Bros. TV for library rights to all of the network’s scripted series, which also covers Dynasty.

Netflix previously signed a similar deal with Warner Bros. TV for international distribution of the CW drama series Riverdale — also based on a very well-known IP — though I hear that agreement was more limited, covering many territories but not all.

Cant wait for BL, I think it will probably become the best and most unique CWDC-TV show.

Every single year the question comes up about Supernatural and how long it is going to last lol, and every year they say the same thing.

Speaking with TVLine on Sunday at the Television Critics Association winter press tour, CW president Mark Pedowitz (who just extended his deal with the network by two years) said that “production issues” played a part in the decision to spell Supergirl.

“We had a moment where they had some production issues,” he said — ones that predated and were independent of Andrew Kreisberg’s removal as co-showrunner, sources tell TVLine.

Pedowitz also cited his previous belief that The CW, for fear of “overload,” ideally doesn’t want all five superhero shows airing concurrently. (Black Lightning debuts Tuesday, Jan.16.)

Were they still filming SG while doing the crossover?  I feel like with how often it seems Melissa has gotten to take vacation they could've used that time better. But im sure they'll get their act together next year, I think S4 was a rough year for Arrow in the beginning in terms of production.

Nate had some great content in this episode. His link to the JSU and making him a Hemophiliac was an interesting move... It did make me curious how that will play into future episodes plus being a hero who is also a hemophiliac says a lot about said hero. It's admirable that Nate still wants to be on the waverider regardless of the risks. Sara was right to worry about him and be wary of having him on the ship.

Oh my, *spoilers I guess for your sake*

Spoiler

I completely forgot about that being an issue, and I think that was one of my issues with him becoming a superhero in the first place.

While that might definitely be true, would they admit to having production issues because of his removal?

Wasn't it the show he was most involved with at the time of his removal?

If I recall correctly, it also tends to take slightly longer to film an episode of Supergirl than episodes of the other shows. That may be contributing to its production issues. It might help if they slightly reduce the number of episodes per season.

Seems more likely that Supergirl suffered a setback from actually having to film a crossover episode

The news comes as Arrow is currently in its sixth season, typically when networks enter into contract negotiations for its leading actors. “I cannot discuss casting negotiations, but I do believe some members of the cast are already signed for longer,” Pedowitz says.

Pedowitz says that the delay in renewals has nothing to do with the recent allegations against Andrew Kreisberg, who was fired by Warner Bros. in November after news broke that 15 women and four men alleged sexual harassment and other physical misconduct by Kreisberg that ultimately created a toxic work environment. “We haven’t renewed anything yet,” Pedowitz notes. “We’re not quite ready to do that. We’re a couple of weeks out. I’m pretty confident a lot of the [CW] slate is coming back. We’re just not ready to make that a formal announcement yet. It is only Jan. 7. It’s just a question of the board and I getting together and having a discussion about it. We just weren’t ready with the holidays and this came just days later. We’ll get there. I’m confident most of our schedule is coming back.”

Kreisberg, who strongly denied the allegations, was initially suspended as Warner Bros. Television Group set out to investigate. “When we found out, the studio informed us about the potential allegations, the studio investigated it, we supported the studio and their perspective,” Pedowitz says. “No one should have to live in the world with sexual harassment or misconduct and people should feel free, whether they work for the CW or at the CW, to say what they want to say and we should have to investigate the whole thing. From a policy point of view, the system worked when the complaint came forward. And to the studio’s credit, and we support them, they did the right thing.”

Pedowitz notes that storylines on The Flash and Supergirl — on which Kreisberg was more hands-on — were not changed in the wake of the allegations, though he recognizes the poorly timed introduction of misogynistic Flash character Ralph Digney (Hartley Sawyer). “Well, ironically the allegations came in after the first [Ralph] episode of the show was shot, so there was a heightened awareness as we went through it,” Pedowitz says. “It’s an old-time cartoon character, so at a moment, it became cringeworthy, but if you look at the character now, as the episodes go on, he’s not that character anymore. It was the direction it was always going to go.”

The investigation also had nothing to do with what Pedowitz calls a “production delay” on Supergirl — the show will return for four weeks starting Jan. 15, after which Legendswill air nine weeks of original episodes starting Feb. 12, while Supergirl takes a break until it reclaims the timeslot on April 16, following the Legends season finale on April 9. Supergirl’s season finale will then air June 18. “There was a little bit of a production delay,” Pedowitz says. “We knew we were never going to air five superhero shows [at the same time.]. ‘Okay, there’s a production delay, let them figure it out, don’t worry about it, we put Legends in, so we’ll run Legends and then we’ll put Supergirl right after it.’ Supergirl running into the summer is actually better programming for us year-round.”

Not necessarily. Since the shows usually have almost 1 month hiatus they could be off air during Olympics. They always save Flash and Arrow till the end of May sweeps.

Nice thing about the 3 week Olympics break, should mean only another 1 (maybe 2) week break in April leading into the final 5 episodes.

No idea but, the only contract that would really matter is SA's and, by his own account he's signed through S7.

ETA: i should add that I'm sure they would want to have most (at least the big ones) of their contracts in order before announcing renewal but, I don't know why he's singling Arrow out.

We’re very much a multi-platform digital play,” Pedowitz said, “It’s exploded to a point where our linear ratings are down but we are basically flat when you look at a seven-day point of view — linear delayed and digital viewing on cw.com.” (The CW series, which also are carried by Netflix, air with almost full commercial load on cw.com, making that play virtually indistinguishable to advertisers from live viewing.)

Anyone actually surprised by this?

Not surprised but I'd rather Arrow not run another six years since it's felt like they've been repeating storylines already for the last three years. Plus how many ill timed and tone deaf PSA episodes will Marc try with another 6 seasons?

Im hoping renewal is like 2 more seasons 3 tops. Also that Stephen Emily and David ask for like all the money if they renew their contracts. Especially Emily who is probably on a low salary being an unknown when she started.

Yes, yes, there's talk of more Prison Break, but that info was offered with caveat that it's early goings yet. X-Files likely done. CEOs claim there are no plans to end DC shows like Gotham, but admitted everything's up in the air, including their employment.

I wonder if they end up not renewing Gotham at some point if they'd bring it over to the CW.  At this point I want it on at least until Bruce Wayne is an adult.  .

Doing a rewatch of the crossover and MB is in a lot of it.  GG didn't have to do double duty and SA is a beast but MB seemingly only had one light episode in her line up.  I can see where they'd have fallen behind.  Either that or "production issues" is code for some behind the scene issues with certain people beyond Kreisberg.  Anyone in rehab that we know of from that set?

Yeah, he's said he's contracted thru 7.  It could really be just the executives not being organized like they said. At least with Arrow.

I think Ken P is just speculating. Yes, SA said he signed through S7. I imagine there are a few contracts up across the Arrowverse but, I don't that it necessarily means anything related to renewal at this point. For all I know CW just wants to see how BL looks before making an official announcement.

I recall that Arrow fell behind a couple of filming days in S4, they made it up in January but they ended splitting and episodes filming between December and January because of crossover backlog/delays.

Well remember Stephen also hadn't really had to suit up or do many fight scenes prior to the crossover due to the whole Diggle GA where as I'm assuming Melissa had as heavier filming schedule as normal, so I could see a little bump in their production schedule. But yeah they are making it sound like a bigger thing.

Some shows do like to resign actors a season or two before they come up for renewal. Even if that's the case here I can't think it would hold up any of the others unless they want to announce them together again. And the only person who would hold up Arrow being renewed or not based on his presence is SA. I would be way less inclined to watch it but I don't think DR or EBR not wanting to come back would stop them from renewing it and definitely not PB or WH. The article doesn't even mention for sure that anyone is in negotiations at the moment. At this point I think KP is just speculating/ shit stirring a bit based on the TCA news not anything he's actually heard about negotiations. They may also want to wait and see how BL starts out as well.

"Production delays" could mean almost anything from cast problems to getting behind due to the crossovers (though I think they'd have said if the latter was the case).

On how Black Lightning will be different from and similar to the Arrowverse shows...

How Black Lightning will stand out from the Arrowverse shows
CHANCELLOR AGARD January 07, 2018 AT 12:29 PM EST
http://ew.com/tv/2018/01/07/black-lightning-arrowverse/

Quote

Black Lightning is unlike any of the CW’s other caped offerings — and not just because of its predominantly black cast. On The Flash, the Scarlett Speedster protects the multiverse from evildoers, and on Supergirl, the Girl of Steel fends off extraterrestrial threats. But on this new series — overseen by Arrowverse overlord Greg Berlanti — the superhero is more concerned with mortal-world problems.

“The conflict here is not necessarily saving the world or battling aliens,” says Cress Williams, who stars as the electricity-powered title character. “It really is looking at real-life problems in an actual city, in an actual neighborhood and trying to conquer those problems — i.e., drugs and corruption, gun violence, police violence, and just oppression that happens below the poverty line.”
*  *  *
“I started out thinking family drama first,” says showrunner Salim Akil, whose wife, Mara Brock Akil, is also an EP. “I wanted every person — Hispanic, white, black, Asian, whoever you are — to be able to recognize yourself.”
*  *  *
While Black Lightning wants to carve out its own path, Akil did borrow one thing from Berlanti’s other shows. “What [those shows] do really well is to lead you on a journey to a crescendo,” says Akil. “Often in my storytelling, we’ve been doing drama and comedy, and we didn’t necessarily lead to a crescendo. We led to a resolution. That’s what you do in dramas. But here, we’re leading to a crescendo.”

He says that this will be very evident in how Black Lightning’s story parallels that of the series’ main villain, Tobias Whale, the leader of the One Hundred gang played by newcomer and L.A. rapper Marvin “Krondon” Jones III. As Black Lightning works his way out from the community and sets his sights on where the drugs and guns are coming from, “Tobias is going to work himself up the food chain, and he’s going to do it ruthlessly,” says Akil.

The executive also remained high on two shows that are several seasons in and seem to be winding down. The 100 showrunner Jason Rothenberg has plans for what a sixth season could look like, and no decision about the show’s fate after Season 5 will be made until May, said Pedowitz, who added, “I’m a big fan of the show, I’ve always been a big fan of the show, so hopefully we’ll get there.”

And Arrow, the DC superhero show that birthed the network’s Arrowverse of interconnected shows, is not going anywhere either, if he has his way.

“I’m not ready for it to wind down,” he said, also touting the show’s multi-platform performance despite declining linear ratings. “As long as they can [keep going], as long as the storytelling’s there, we’d love to.”

TCA coverage by RCR Entertainment Reporter Amy Cassandra, Follow her on Twitter at @AmyCassandraM
*  *  *
Today, on the morning of the 75th Annual Golden Globes, the air is filled with anticipation as to what this year will hold when it comes to equality and representation. That also held true for the panel room at the CW portion of the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour at the Langham Huntington in Pasadena, California. Though the day ended early, the two panels for the two new series proved to pack a punch.

First, we have to talk about how much happiness the Black Lightning cast and crew brought by having mimicked lightning and roaring thunder kick off the presentation. The CW’s first African American lead superhero will be unrolling the secrets of his past to protect his family and his city in this new CW show. Executive Producer, Salim Akil said he wanted to share what he knew, what’s real and that he wanted it to be authentic. He also shared that the writing staff of Black Lightning is predominantly African-American. In our current social climate, it feels as though this cast and crew know exactly what to do to make sure everyone is accurately represented. Executive Producer Mara Brock Akil added this show is “vision-led” which proves this really is a passion project for everyone involved. Cress Williams, who plays Black Lightning, chuckled when he said: “I was ecstatic!” (pun intended) when talking about getting the part. Marvin ‘Krondon’ Jones III, Tobias Whale, shared that “everybody embodies their character” and that it was “the most real thing (he’s) ever worked on.” Being put in the same category as Luke Cage and Black Panther, this new CW series will be one to keep an eye on. Black Lightning premieres on January 16th!

BLACK LIGHTNING CREATORS PROMISE AUTHENTIC REPRESENTATION AND INCLUSION
POSTED BY SYDNEY BUCKSBAUM ON JANUARY 7, 2018
https://nerdist.com/black-lightning-representation-inclusion-cress-williams-cw-tca/

Quote

“I just drew from my life,” Salim told the room of reporters at the 2018 Winter Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday. “Jefferson is already a community-based superhero, he’s already a principal, he’s already a father. It gave me an opportunity to talk about things that were personal to me. I grew up in a community like Freeland. I was surrounded by those things that you see in Freeland and in Chicago and Oakland. It came naturally. It wasn’t a choice made out of, ‘Hey this is what we want to say.’ It came out of a choice of, ‘This is what I know and this is what we know so let’s do what’s real. Let’s do what’s authentic and real to me,’ which I think everybody embraces. I’m appreciative of that. It’s very personal to me.”

And Mara is proud she and Salim are never forced to take their voice out of their work. “Akil Productions, one thing that Salim and I set out early to do and it’s a through line in all of our projects, is that we do black on purpose,” she said. “It’s important to us to put our humanity into the picture, into the tableau that is out there in storytelling. The authentic nature about how we communicate, how we use humor to survive sometimes, to get through the next moment as opposed to just being funny. Sometimes how we get back out there is to laugh at it, otherwise the alternative is to cry and not do anything. The authentic voice, the black on purpose, the storytelling about the layered characters of Freeland and of this family, and the community [was important to us].”
*  *  *
“I think it’s beautiful that we have Luke Cage, that we have us, and we have Black Panther,” Williams says. “We’re kind of conquering every possible outlet. I think there’s an animated black Spider-Man coming. I’m stoked. Now we have so many things to choose from, so I hope that keeps growing, not only for African-Americans but for every ethnicity, gender, religion. I think it’s important. Ideally I want everyone to be able to look and go, ‘That’s me.’ I want to find them socially represented, they grow up and look to the screens and say, ‘I see me.'”

But what’s coming later in the first season is what Salim is most excited to debut. “You haven’t even seen Thunder and Lightning yet,” he said of Jefferson’s two daughters coming into their own superpowers. “The conversation is revolving around Jefferson and Black Lightning but look at this. You have a superhero with her hair in cornrows. That’s for the culture. You guys haven’t seen that yet.”

‘Black Lightning’ Executive Producer Explains Why Newest CW Superhero Isn’t Part of the Arrowverse

“I say this with all due respect, but they’re not really relevant to the show that we’re doing,” executive producer Salim Akil explained at the Television Critics Association press tour on Sunday. “The great thing that Warner Bros. and CW allowed us to do was create our own world. We really wanted folk to get to know this family before we started branching out.”
*  *  *
“Oftentimes there’s so many reports about studios and networks, and I just want to say again that what you see is a direct result of people supporting us in this,” Akil said. “This idea of why they’re not in this universe or why they’re not in the ‘Justice League’ is because … [we were told] ‘You’ve got to do this the way you want to do this. You’re going to live and die by that, and we support you.’ That’s what you’re seeing.”

I'm onto episode 3 of Legends.

This is kind of a boring episode and I wasn't into the whole damseling of it all but I'm really enjoying the team as a whole and everyone is right when they say Legends does the best to try to incorporate every character and make them important to the plot/show.

So far I'm really enjoying Nate/Ray/Stein the most, I wish Nate's hemophilia was explored more instead of cured straight off the bat... But then again the Arrowverse always sucked at exploring disabilities/illnesses etc. IDK what people think about Nate but so far his character has been properly exposed and I've been enjoying him.

Ray's storyline within the episode was also great. It makes sense why he'd feel useless and like a nothing without his suit. It makes me annoyed at Sara even more for saying what she said to him in episode 1... But I do like that his journey this season is to find his 'inner hero'. This show is really making me like Ray and I can't stand it lmao

I'm still waiting on the show to sell me on Amaya, I definitely haven't seen enough of her to make any judgement. Also I can't believe I have to wait another season to meet Zari :/ I'm most excited about her.

Sara worked better in this episode and I can see why she's the leader, people listen to her and trust her. But because I don't care about stunts that much (although I must say her stunts were awesome in this episode), I just can't seem to really care about her? IDK I'm trying to like her but I don't... She seemed more 3 dimensional in Arrow than she does here which is a catch 22 because Caity can't handle the heavy acting that one needs to put into a 3 dimensional and nuanced character. But her character on LoT who is more 2 dimensional, really bores me. Also why does she always sound so tipsy while she's talking?

Also Sara saying "league of assassins, class of '09" annoyed me a lot. Get a new line, writers -_- Especially one that makes sense because Sara was still in the LoA in 2009.

I hope the show gives Mick more content, he can't just be the guy who says one-liners all the time.

It seems as though future Barry is still the worst...

The third episode was the Japan one right? That was one was pretty bad. Caity is best at the stunts since she actually did that whole sword fight including the flip. What I like about Legends is they are not all hung up the killing people issue that the other shows are. Sara completely cheated and killed that samurai with a hidden knife and Ray and Nate killed the Emperor. The villains also know that Sara is not like the other heroes she would have no problem killing them.

I think the LoA of '09 was Sara finished her assassin training in '09. But they do overuse that line on all the shows.

Yeah, except for Sara's sword fight, that episode was probably my least favorite of the second season.   Not quite as bad as this season's circus episode, but it wasn't great.

Overall I'm really enjoying the show. I just finished episode 4.

Probably my most favorite aspect of the episode was Stein and them dealing with the zombies in the waverider. His fear of Zombies was not only realistic but it was so endearing. Victor Garber seemed to have the time of his life in this role. I hate that I love Stein the most because of what happens :(

As much as I liked Nate's introduction I don't really understand his purpose anymore. They don't use him as a historian much or in a meaningful way. He's no Lucy Preston that's for sure. Timeless definitely makes use of its resident historian better.

Mick's line at the end asking Stein why he's about to kiss him was hilarious. Overall though, I like that Mick on the outside seems like he doesn't care and that he's a marshmallow on the inside. I wish they gave him more to do other than pep talks or being grumbly. Also I hope Dominic tones down the breathy growl in his voice a bit. It gets to be too much at times lol

Jax is meh so far. He seems so whiny? It gets on my nerves at times. But I quite liked him in episode 4. The subject matter wasn't that great because I really don't like it when DCTV delves into heavy subject matters like racism and slavery etc. The way LoT handled it wasn't the worst, but this subject deserves more than what LoT gave it. The scene in the barn wasn't great at all and it was heavy handed. What makes it worse is that I don't think we'll see this affecting Jax or Amaya in future episodes.

I'm really loving Amaya and how the writers make her do team ups with different characters every episode... Maisie kind of has chemistry with everyone. She's really growing on me as a character and I hope to see more of her.
