I believe IAB officers were brought in because the victim was currently going to trial against the LAPD and accusing LAPD officers of several civil offenses in the Black Guardian case. So it was clear from the start that police officers were going to be suspects and need to be investigated. That's what IAB does. So the two that had already investigaed the officers for Black Guardian were included on the task force. But Bosch was still in charge since it wasn't an IAB investigation but a homicide case that had police officers as possible suspects.

Thanks.  That helps some more.  Now you guys want to help me with Black Guardian?  Heh.  Does the name refer solely to the case of the torture of Michael Harris?  Or is it more an overall movement, like Black Lives Matter?  Or just referring to Elias' ongoing battle against the LAPD's brutality? 

It seems like from context it's just the Harris case but how did the name Black Guardian get applied to that?  It doesn't seem appropriate.  I guess maybe if it's a name Elias took on for taking the case?  Oh wait, is it an actual organization that paid Elias to take on the Harris case?  I'm so confused.  LOL  (Ok, I googled it and found a Bosch wiki and in the book it was Black Warrior because that was the brand of the pencil.  So the phrase does refer solely to the Harris torture.)

Yes, you're correct that the name of the case is the brand name of the pencil. In one of the episodes (don't remember which one) they do say that Black Guardian is the brand name of the pencil that was used to torture the suspect.

I agree that Maddie is the best written teen girl I’ve seen in a while.  I just ranted about the awful tv teen girl stereotype in the Safe thread.  

I love this show but this wasn’t my favorite season.  I didn’t care about the Eleanor stuff and the rest was just ok.  And Edgar’s marriage... don’t care anymore.  

When I read the books I don’t see these characters.  Not that there’s anything wrong with these. 

I’ll be back for the 5th season.

Few Los Angeles based stories take place below ground and you never hear about rats that don't fear people. Maybe they are around the growing homeless tent cities but it never occurred to me to think hey no rats that might be standard in a NYPD based show.

Yeah, the episode description mentions Crate and Barrel but we never see them in the episode and the case isn't brought up.  Maybe a deleted scene?

That would be superb. I still love this show even as it is and adore Bosch’s relationship with his daughter Maddie. Good plots, great actors and subtle but effective action. I’m sitting on my hands for the next season. I only came to this show about a month ago and binged all four seasons. Now I’m at a loss...well Goliath comes back for its second season in two weeks.

I’m impressed with the amount of posting on Twitter that Titus Welliver and Michael Connelly do. They seem interactive and grateful to all the fans. I think they appreciate that we watch. Makes me like the show even more.

I’ve been wanting Rachel Walling to show up, but as she’s originally a character from a non-Bosch novel and only shown up in Bosch’s world a couple of times, maybe they can’t use her. Or maybe they can and have been waiting until they killed off Eleanor.

Who, by the way, is a character I liked way more on the show (largely due to Sarah Clarke) than in the books. In fact, I hated Eleanor in the books.

Mickey Haller's been in some Bosch books. (Or was it the other way around?) Connelly's an exec producer - I don't think rights are a problem.

Yeah, but since the Lincoln Lawyer and its character were sold as movie rights to... whatever film company it is, they get sole custody of the characters in that book (and possibly other sequel books) for whatever length of time they paid for. So the tv show may not be able to use Haller, even with Connelly as an EP.

@kariyaki explained why.  It's possible he could get the rights back at some point, which is what happened with Bosch, and Haller could appear but right now, I would imagine he's still exclusive to whoever produced the original movie.

It's been really hard to watch them deal with the death of Eleanor. My watching of this lined up close to the two-year anniversary of my mother going into the hospital (this weekend), and dying a month later, on July 24th. It only feels like a year. I was in shock and then denial for a good while, and then suddenly I wasn't, which has been worse. I almost didn't watch any more of the season, because of it.

I could have done with less Maddie, but I liked the season ending with just the two of them, scattering her mother's ashes. I watched the first season, just over four months after I'd lost my mother, and I remember Bosch saying something about the world being a cold place, once you've lost your mum. Ouch. that really hit home. I hate that they killed off his ex-wife. To me, it felt like they were looking for a reason to have his daughter around more. 

I didn't know there were books (or I'd forgotten). I'll have to look for them.

I asked him that question today on Twitter. He replied that he had read one of the books before assuming the role of Bosch. They are almost done scouting locations for the next season which begins filming in 3 weeks. Titus W. seems like a very nice person. He seems very willing to answer questions and posts a lot on Twitter as does Michael Connelly, the author of the Bosch books. There are also quote sites and fan sites as well.

I'm about two from the end of S2, and one thing I like about this season is how much he's grown. No longer is he the guy learning at Bosch's feet, with the occasional good idea of his own; he seems right on the edge of being ready to fly.

Just finished season 2. I really liked it (preferred it to season 1). Unless my perception is off, Titus Welliver turned down the "tic-like," angled-head mannerisms to a less distracting level, enabling me to believe in his character more. Lance Reddick became awesome. Took me a while to place Brent Sexton, till I finally realized he was Stan Larsen! :) Also liked season 2 better because I'm not a fan of the whole "cop who shares a psychological bond with the serial killer" trope. I mean, I was a fan of it the first few hundred times.

I have to confess sometimes I can't track the logic of Bosch's deductive process as fast as the show throws it at me, but I don't care too much.

I thought the resolution of the KTK was pretty accurate when compared to what sometimes happens in real life.  It's not unusual for a criminal to be caught almost by accident...detectives investigating one case catch the perpetrator in another unrelated case via DNA evidence or similarities in m.o.s etc.  It doesn't mean the detectives were just lucky....they were usually checking every possibility, every avenue.

I love this show! I've watched all 4 seasons in the past, but my husband and I just recently binge watched them. For me and my addle brain sometimes the show moves fast and I miss much. 😜 So it was good to rewatch. Bring on season 5!!!

I'm rewatching season 4 in preparation-- I've read all the books-- did they change the background story with Eleanor and Maddie splitting with Harry? I thought Harry didn't even know he had a daughter until she was school age or so-- but he's looking at a photo of Eleanor with a toddler that *he took.*  Am I misremembering the way it worked in the books?

Yes, they changed it.  In the books, Harry discovered he had a daughter when she was very young, I think 3 or 4.  In the show, Harry and Eleanor are together when Maddie is born, and their marriage doesn't end for a few years.  In the books, they were never together as a couple with Maddie, and Maddie doesn't move to LA until her mother dies, which happened when Maddie was a few years younger than she is in the show.  

So much is changed from the books - the Irvin Irving character, Jerry Edgar, Harry & Eleanor's relationship, Eleanor's history with the FBI, etc.  As I said above in this thread (if it survived the recent changes), I've stopped thinking, "hey it didn't happen that way!" to just thinking of this as an entertaining show that by coincidence has characters with the same names as the characters in one of my favorite series of books. 

I did a re-watch of the first 4 seasons in the past month, and plan to watch season 5 tomorrow.  Really looking forward to it.

I have finished the 5th season and it is as good as I hoped that it would be. It ended with Harry doing something that I had really hoped that he would do. 

Good acting. Good action. Good music. Believable plot line. Great show.

I'm glad Maddie wasn't written as really stupid. She's always been smart. I hope they keep her that way. Only problem for me (and I'm being a superficial female), dang, girl. Do something about those eyebrows. I swear I saw them blow in the wind.

I thought they did a good job growing her character up. I did have a problem with Her taking photos of the DAs evidence against her father and the case they were working on. 

I also wonder why Harry Didn’t ask her if the boy friend had called her after he urged him to reach out by phone instead of text  

She seems to be a strong young woman. She lost both her mother and Reggie (due to the government not death) last season. Her fears about losing her Dad, especially in his line of work, are rational. I’m surprised she tries to toe the line rather than act out. Did anyone catch what she is studying in college?

It's very hard to believe that the D.A.'s office would give Maddie the run of the place while there's an ongoing investigation against her father.

How many times must Bosch be attacked before he secures his freaking house? Motion detector floodlights on the stairs, alarms, reinforced glass, exterior cameras, etc.

At least Bosch is locking his door now. 

I loved how the dog warned him about the attempt on his life. The dog would have gone after those guys! But Bosch pulled him into the room with him because he knew that he wouldn’t hesitate to kill the dog. 

When the dog returned I also was surprised that Bosch didn’t bring his food and water bowls back into the house. Critters, coyotes and all that.

ETA: I supposed season 6 will deal in part with Daisy Clayton.

However the elite bias of making him a 5th Special Forces Group veteran  in the forth season 15 or so years ago doesn't really fit how people react to him  Being a regular troop/tunnel rat in Vietnam in the books and a first Gulf War veteran in the earlier seasons better fits his age and becoming a cop better in my opinion. That the ex CIA bad guy hears Special Forces and still plays around with Bosch  as a pill buyer in their scheme seemed odd.

Since Bosch closed his mother's case I guess the daughter of a vet that he took on as a replacement project will be background.

I was thinking is that a theme this season, on S.W.A.T.  an officer has the same story line going.

I finished this earlier today and it was another solid season that makes me happier than any TV show should. 

There were a few WTF moments for me.  The plane fight where no one was just sucked out of the plane.  Or Jeri Ryan's cameo at the lawyer's office.  Why would she need to see the laywer? I thought her case was closed. 

But I'm always impressed with how many cases they juggle.  We had multiple cops working different angles of the opioid case but then the side cases with the Jamaicans and Bosch's old case as well.  And we also nicely transitioned into cases for next season with the Daisy Clayton case and the case the new cop and her partner were working on where the body was chopped apart. (Just a guess for both.)

It just moves and a nice rapid pace.  I was glad the dog came back (I was worried for him.) I was glad that it doesn't look like Barrel will be leaving quite yet. I was worried this show was going to lose its comedic element--this show's competent version of Hitchcock and Scully. 

Here's to many more seasons.  Hopefully.  I'm happy we know 7 is coming.
