If he hired it, good for him for trying. It'll be the end of he and Gretchen, but good for him for trying. Some interesting and sad resolutions tonight. Gretchen can't handle Jimmy actually loving her. Paul wants Lindsey to be happy within his borders (granted, it's a perfectly reasonable position to take, and Lindsey is out of line, but he shouldn't change for her any more than she should for him. Also, is she still pregnant?) I wasn't expecting them to deal with Edgar's situation directly, but they did, and I'm okay with it. Grass can do wonderous things. 1 Link to comment
NorthstarATL October 6, 2016 Share October 6, 2016 There is nothing more tedious than the over-glorification of pot as a cure-all. Edgar was harder drugs high in order to get over the PTSD, but if people can be convinced that it works, then the placebo effect alone will have worked miracles, and why not? (Maybe I'm just immune to its effects due to over-exposure. I don't know.) My Grandparents had a speakeasy in their basement. I loved playing there as a kid, especially once I discovered the secret entrance. So I have a soft spot for the concept. At least they didn't go for Pokeman as the scavenger hunt equivalent. I enjoyed Lindsey and Gretchen's fighting, if only because the physical stuff reminded me of my sisters. Too bad they went with Lindsey's "solution" being an "open marriage", which is just as lazy as the miracle cure of pot. Lindsey has serious problems with intimacy and freedom. She has never learned to be independent, because, for the most part, she never had to face the consequences of not being a full adult. THAT is far more her issue with the marriage than the monotony of monogamy. Loved how much the guys knew about ragtime. Hidden depths. 2 Link to comment
Traveller519 October 6, 2016 Share October 6, 2016 That fireworks scene was beautiful coming out of last week's episode. I love how the show can explore these visual mediums, with last week's episode being shot war film style and that scene being almost a music video with all the colour. And the expression of joy on all the "shooters" faces I read was as much about them loving that one of their friends was dealing with his own issues as it was the fun in the moment. I think it showed that they do love each other, for as terrible as they can be. @NorthstarATL , I agree with you about what Lindsey's real issues are, but I can see her character believing the Open Marriage to be her solution, to having the security of Paul with the excitement of being single. 3 Link to comment

He is a decent guy, with (generally) her best interests in mind, but he doesn't at all fit what she seems to be interested in. It's almost like some small part of Lindsey, buried deep inside, knows she *needs* a guy like Paul, but the rest of her rebels against it. I would find Paul generally annoying, but in this episode he showed that he can join the others on an impromptu adventure - I would not have expected that. JustaPerson October 6, 2016 Share October 6, 2016 (edited) Lindsay got pregnant as a result of their hookup at the beginning of the season. She was going to get an abortion and not tell Paul so he wouldn't feel any obligation and could be happy with Amy and she could move on but Becca ended up telling him. Did the show suddenly switch genres and this is some form of non-realism? I don't even see how Jimmy could have planned it, like someone above suggested-- how would you include the screaming, panicking family with the kids in bed and the jail? Even if somehow they were actors and called the fake police, how was there a fake jail with a secret toilet entrance to a speakeasy? Just... what? 1 Link to comment

Maybe there is more to Paul than we have seen. First season Lindsey was very different from current Lindsey if I recall. She was a bit more pulled together. At some point she developed into this hot mess of a person. Even in the opening credits she's dressed very conservatively and that's more the way the character was introduced. You got the feeling that she and Gretchen had wild and crazy younger days and then she decided to settle down and couple up - met Paul, was generally happyish so they married and then she realized she was not happy and had made a terrible mistake. She wasn't quite so dumb early on. I can understand why the character would have had a breakdown of sorts and become a bit more promiscuous but she has really turned into a super cartoon of a person. In fact, that's my biggest complaint with this whole season - the characters used to be slightly exaggerated terrible people. Now they're cartoons. 3 Link to comment
iMonrey October 7, 2016 Share October 7, 2016 I agree that Lindsay is hard to figure out (and I wondered too whether she's still supposed to be pregnant; there was no mention of it and she was smoking pot with Edgar). But then, she hasn't had her "very special episode" yet so I guess we'll get around to that. I loved the way they tried to corner the briefcase guy and were yelling "give us your secrets" after him as he ran away. I don't get why Jimmy was calling him the homeless masturbator though. Or was he talking about the guy in the library watching porn? I'm going to call magnifying glasses "my bigifier" from now on. Link to comment
scrb October 7, 2016 Share October 7, 2016 The speakeasy ended up being too hipster. Not only is Lindsey a cartoon, the rest of the cast acts cartoonish a lot of the time. The hunt was inventive and more interesting than the place they ended up in, which could be any of a number of hipster dives which they could just walk into. 1 Link to comment

I think the whole point is how crazy and unbelievable it was. They did the same thing last year with the Halloween Sunday Funday. There are interactive haunted houses, but I seriously doubt that they chain women up like in Silence of the Lambs. I guess this was just their extra-exaggerated take on speakeasies. I enjoyed this episode because I think the show is best when the ensemble is together. It was funny, and it still managed to broach a serious topic, but it did it in a way that involved all of the characters and they did it in a unique way (Edgar and the fireworks). I especially liked seeing Lindsay as a human being again and loved her small scene with Edgar. Paul still just grosses me out though. I also liked the friend fight between Gretchen and Lindsay. But who the hell goes on a scavenger hunt around town in those heels? Take it from me ladies, you are gonna regret that in ten years! 1 Link to comment

tennisgurl October 7, 2016 Share October 7, 2016 I really loved that episode, and how ridiculous the whole thing was, especially after how serious last weeks episode was. This show has always played with the occasional bits of magical realism, and I think thats what they were going for here. It was less literal and more of the feeling of having a crazy adventure running around a city. And I loved seeing the hidden depths of all our characters, and how even Jimmy got into it by the end. I also love Speak Easy themed bars (and old timey cocktails!), so this all totally spoke to me. The Edgar scene with the fireworks was amazing. Just so much pure joy. 3 Link to comment

I'm still compelled to watch it, but the cartoonish-turn it's take is also what turned me off Seinfeld in the later seasons. You can have a funny, wry and interesting show where people act badly but in a way that is believable. And I'm sure I'm in the "UO" category here but I think the actor that plays Edgar is just horrible. I can't stand watching him. Link to comment
