Conviction Anticipation Topic

Gotta make one, but frankly I am not really anticipating anything with this many cliches in it's description:

Quote

Lawyer and former First Daughter Hayes Morrison (Atwell) is about to accept a job offered from her sexy nemesis, NY District Attorney Wayne Wallis, to avoid jail time for cocaine possession and avoid hurting her mother’s Senate campaign. Working with his team at the new Conviction Integrity Unit will let her use her brilliant mind to turn over cases where there is credible suspicion of wrongful conviction, and give her a chance to turn things around with her high-powered political family.

There's a real stench coming from that. Sexy nemisis? Avoiding jail time? Parental political campaign?  Good lord.

It does sound very Shonda Rhimes-ish (and there is nothing like that, as long as you are Shonda Rhimes).  I don't know...I'm withholding judgment until I actually see an episodes.  I think Hayley Atwell is a strong enough actress to elevate a lacking script...but I am going to miss her accent!

Maybe the title has cursed it already. Let us remember, there was also a series called Conviction in 2006 on NBC, set in the same universe as L&O (but no L&O in the title, with the SVU character Alex Cabot as lead) about a group of young lawyers that lasted one season.

It was cheesy. I think Conviction 2 needs to be careful not to be some huge cliché. Still, Hayley Atwell is likable, so maybe this one stands a chance.

I just saw the trailer - I feel confident that I have now seen the pilot in its entirety. I know each story beat, and how the pilot ends. I mean, why? Why do that?

And that's by no means the show's only problem: the other, in my opinion, is that while Hayley Atwell is likable, and the only reason I watched the trailer, her character is not. In fact, to me, she's the most unlikable protagonist I have seen in a show in a long, long time. I don't care about her issues, or any of her problems. I could barely finish the trailer - I can't imagine watching entire episodes based on this horrible human being.

I saw a clip,. And loathed the lead woman.  I only want to see episodes where Daniel Di Tomosso appears shirtless.  With a beard.  Maybe a little sweaty.   Other than that, no thanks.

I'm sure at least a few people would love to see Hayley Atwell shirtless instead!

I always love this interview, where Craig Ferguson is noticeably extra-cautious with his eyeline when he's interviewing her.

Atwell is fantastic, and I love the idea of the female antihero.

I just looked up Eddie Cahill's age, and it turns out that at 38 he's only 4 years older than Hayley Atwell's 34. But he looks much older than her in the trailer, which is a shame. I would love if the show could produce a good romance storyline, so I hope his character wins me over.

A show that isn't pro-police, pro-prosecutor, pro-convention is by definition not a cliche. To be a cliche it has to be used a lot. It's not even a trope.

The so-called antihero, female or not, is a desperately tired cliche in Peak TV, though. In truth, the antiheroes are just plain heroes, which is to say, winners. There's no reason to think Hayley Atwell won't win, win, win. The trick will be in how they handle the sex. Double standards still exist, especially in TV, which is always behind the times (including the premium cables!)

I think anti-heroes have to have something to struggle against. Life can not be all easy for them. Tony Soprano gets panic attacks and sees a therapist. House is in constant pain because of his leg and is addicted to vicodin. Walter White is dying from cancer. Don Draper is always afraid people will discover that he is a deserter and that he stole the identity of a dead man.  Annalise on How To Get Away With Murder is a middle aged African-American bisexual woman living in America, etc.

Hayley's character is the beautiful young daughter of a former president given a second chance instead of facing prison for crimes she committed. She's the poster girl for "white privilege"! I am just not going to root for this person.
