It's Statham's highest opening weekend outside of F&F. As for his overall box office history, outside of Vin and company, there's Spy ($110M), The Italian Job ($106M) and the first Expendables ($103M), though they all had other stars as the biggest draw. The Italian Job adjusts to $163M, and Expendables 2 is his biggest non-Furious hit worldwide ($315M).

I wonder what kind of boost (if any) The Meg got from being the only Moviepass option over the weekend for many theaters (aside from Slender Man). At least, in my area they were the only two options.

I think I read that Jason Statham, Bingbing Li, Rainn Wilson, Cliff Curtis, and Ruby Rose were paid $20 million total. A fair chunk of the budget right there.

At first, I read that as $20 million each, and I thought, "Well, I know The Office had a good run but Rainn Wilson must have quite the agent!"

 

With final numbers, Crazy Rich Asians actually made $26,510,140, over a million more than the weekend estimates and its domestic total is $44,431,761 after seven days.  So far, the box office is tracking very closely to The Help and We're The Millers, which both opened in mid-August on a Wednesday. Weekend Box Office: 'Crazy Rich Asians' Earns Crazy $25M; 'Happytime Murders' Bombs With $10M:

The movie continues to broaden out beyond the Asian-American audience, who made up 27 percent of this weekend's audience, compared to 38 percent last weekend (and 44 percent on opening day). The Caucasian demo grew from 41 percent to 48 percent, while Hispanic ticket buyers increased from 11 percent to 13 percent, and African-Americans, 6 percent to 9 percent ("other" made up 3 percent).

Crazy Rich Asians also picked up strength in the South and Midwest, according to Warners president of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein. "It's significant that the film made just as much this Saturday as it did the Saturday before," he says.

Such a low drop outside of a holiday weekend is incredibly rare in the age of the multiplex (Forbes):

There were exactly 68 movies that have opened wide (or expanded) on at least 2,000 screens and then dropped 8% or less in their second wide-release weekend. There were 48 movies to do so on at least 2,500 screens and just 26 to do so on over 3,000 screens. Of those 68 movies, just seven of them did not have the benefit of a second weekend which fell on a major holiday like Memorial Day, Thanksgiving or (as is the case with the vast majority of them) Christmas.

Those seven are St. Vincent (which expanded to 2,282 screens in its third weekend and then dropped just 6.7% in its second weekend in late 2014), The Fugitive (-5.6% on 2,364 screens in 1993), Brother Bear (which went wide in its second weekend in 2003 and then fell 4.5% in weekend two on 3,030 screens), The Sixth Sense (-3.4% on 2,394 screens in 1999), Puss in Boots (-3% on 3,963 screens in 2011), My Dog Skip (which expanded to 2,331 weekend eight and then rose 2.8% on weekend nine in 2000) and Mother’s Day (+32% on 3,141 screens last year mostly because its second Sunday fell on Mother’s Day).

Can't wait to see how far Crazy Rich Asians will go! As a box office nerd, I like record opening weekends, but word-of-mouth phenomenons are more entertaining to follow.

We're The Millers and The Help seem to be the BO models for CRA. We're the Millers got to the 150m mark, The Help got to around $175m mark. CRA seems to be doing better than both those movies.

Really?  Is that considering Marvel, Pixar, and Lucasfilm as independent of Disney?  Because it seems impossible that, between all of them, they haven't achieved that.

Box Office Mojo lumps all of those entities together, still using the "Buena Vista" brand name that was in place for Disney's distribution arm when the site started (it was rebranded Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures in 2007), so it would make sense if the trades did, too.  Anyway, a studio having the Top 2 movies for four weeks straight is apparently harder than it looks, as the "record" didn't pan out with the actual numbers.

The Predator continues the less than amazing box office of the franchise and Blake Lively has another mid-level hit. It was fascinating to see the marketing for A Simple Favor shift from selling it as a Blake Lively/Anna Kendrick two-hander for months, to adding about a thousand percent more Henry Golding in the last 2-3 weeks.

Both? Kevin Hart is more established and has a proven track record, but Tiffany Haddish was the breakout star of Girls Trip, won an Emmy and has really made a name for herself as a celebrity in the past year or so. She has another starring role coming out in November, directed by Tyler Perry but (so far) not a "Tyler Perry" movie—his first R-rated effort! Curious to see how that goes...

I haven't heard good things about Venom, but the trailer views are massive. so theaters will be busy next weekend between it and A Star Is Born. The Halloween sequel is also likely to get off to a big start later in the month.

Venon breaks the October opening weekend record by a comfortable margin. IMO, it had too many trailer views to flop, but it's about $20 million more than I expected. People seem to like it despite the critical drubbing so I think it could have decent legs for the genre. A Star Is Born is also off to a great start, considering that it's an R-rated musical drama. Overall, it does make for a top heavy Top 10, though.

I  haven't seen Venom, but the reviews make it sound as though Tom Hardy's performance is kind of bonkers and the movie is more of a throwback to 2000s superhero films than the more recent MCU/DC efforts.

In the age of streaming, some people only go to theaters for movies with a big spectacle. Others feel that if they are going to expend the time and money to go to a movie theater, they want to know they are going to like it and gravitate towards stories that color within certain lines. I think that's why spoilers are popular in general these days. Comic book movies have built in fanbases, and plenty of people feel like they get enough reality by following current events and want to escape to worlds with superheroes to save the day and the villainous havoc is purely fictional. 

 

A Star Is Born made $1.6 million more than estimates and held nicely yesterday.

The Top 2 movies repeat as First Man underwhelms in its opening weekend. Too much competition for the adult audience, too little interest in the subject or did the flag controversy genuinely hurt with its target demo? It could finish under Goosebumps 2 with the final numbers. Maybe the studio should have gone for a 50th anniversary tie-in release next summer?

I think too much competition is the problem.  I think the flag thing is irrelevant to the target demo, which is more science-minded than rah-rah patriotic.  Next July for the 50th anniversary would've probably been a better idea.  It might have legs, though.

At the very least, they should've waited until after 10/31 so the glut of horror movies would be past.
