With the boost of summer weekdays, I don't think 80-90+ million is an impossible target for it. Now that it's at 73 million, 80 million does look like a foregone conclusion. At the very least, high 70's. Not bad for a movie with its budget. Really shocked at the drop for Spiderman. So it looks like this summer will definitely belong to Wonder Woman. Link to comment

AshleyN July 23, 2017 Share July 23, 2017 Love or hate Christopher Nolan it's hard not to be impressed with his ability to put butts in the seats. His movies pretty much always have really strong legs too, so combine that with Dunkirk's great reception and the fact that there doesn't seem to be too much competition in the coming weeks and I'll be interested to see how high it can climb. Either way, it's probably safe to assume he'll continue to have carte blanche with the studios. Nice to see Girl's Trip open so well too -- I feel like it's been awhile since we've seen a studio comedy really break out? And like with Baby Driver and The Big Sick, it's always good to see smaller-scale films holding their own in the midst of blockbuster season. 5 Link to comment

Although she CAN act; but she's been hyped as the next Jodie Foster/Natalie Portman (child star who grows up into an Oscar contender) and I don't think she's all that. Chloe does seem to be taking a lower-profile right now. Her best bet would be to focus on appearing in ensembles and possibly getting herself into the Marvel machine, which would allow her steady work and enough income to be choosier about her projects instead of taking crap like The 5th Wave. I do like that she's refused to whittle herself down to a size 0 which is refreshing to see. I'm kind of impressed that Dunkirk did that well. It's not the type of America Fuck Yeah war movies that do well. Edited July 24, 2017 by methodwriter85 2 Link to comment

thuganomics85 July 30, 2017 Share July 30, 2017 Whew, a little close there, but I'm certainly glad Dunkirk stopped Emoji Movie from claiming the top stop. Still made way more money then it probably should have. Honestly, I'm not surprised Atomic Blonde was bit soft. I enjoyed it, but it had a few things going against it, and I can see why it won't appeal to everyone. Won't be too surprised if it has a big second week drop either, but at least it's budget isn't too high. What I find interesting is Quote 10 (9) Wonder Woman $3,540,000 | 1,651 Theaters | $2,144 Avg. | $149M Budget | $395,443,706 Less then five million away from $400 million domestically. Between Fury Road and FF8 I thought Theron might be developing into a stand alone action star. IDK, the internal multiplier for the weekend isn't great for an animated kids' film, though as always it depends on how it holds in coming weeks along with how much money it can make overseas and its home movie/merchandising afterlife. I wonder if it's the sort of story that only works for people once and would flop badly as a sequel. Atomic Blonde opened on the lower end of expectations but I feel like its buzz kind of peaked too far out from its release date. It screened months ago at SXSW but wasn't the kind of awards movie that uses reviews and Oscar predictions to build up the excitement all over again. $18.5M is still above the first John Wick. I hear the movie isn't entirely like the advertising has made it out to be, so the word-of-mouth might be mixed. 3 hours ago, thuganomics85 said: What I find interesting is Less then five million away from $400 million domestically. Coming off a $3.5M weekend and with August still to go, WB shouldn't really have to extend themselves too much. Good for WW to get there naturally, but the artificial pushes to a milestone are more fun to watch from a box office perspective. 1 hour ago, methodwriter85 said: Baby Driver just needs another 8 million to hit the 100 million mark. Let's hope it does! I think Baby Driver is close enough to make it, even with inevitable upcoming theater losses, at worst it will need a Labor Day weekend re-expansion to get there. On the all-time domestic list there are literally two movies that finished their runs in the $99M range and they were both Buena Vista/Disney animated properties. It's just four movies at $98M and five at $97M. Meanwhile, you have 24 above $100M yet below $101M, and 18 at $101M. 1 Link to comment

This weekend is the lowest first weekend of August since 1998. Early August has produced strong opening weekends in recent years so I think with 2017 it's probably just one of those quirks of scheduling. At different points both Alien: Covenant and Pitch Perfect 3 were scheduled for this weekend and Baby Driver was supposed to come out August 11. Something like Valerian could have benefited from the August date and things debuting later this year, like It or the Kingsman sequel. Link to comment

Dejana August 23, 2017 Author Share August 23, 2017 10 hours ago, xaxat said: I am really interested in seeing what Wolf Warriors 2 's success means for the Chinese movie industry. Scott Mendelson (of Forbes) thinks it "should terrify Hollywood": Quote But it’s not unreasonable to presume that the appeal of the prototypical Hollywood blockbuster may wane in China if their own filmmakers are able to offer approximate content in terms of scope, scale and production values. Moreover, if such a thing is possible, it may put China in a better bargaining position in terms of how much money Hollywood gets from exports, how many American films play in China in a given year and any number of other related considerations. If blow out hits like Wolf Warrior 2 or The Mermaid, or even big winners like Kung Fu Yoga, become par for the course, then Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales or Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.'s Kong: Skull Island will be less necessary to theater owners (and moviegoers). 2 Link to comment
Dejana August 27, 2017 Author Share August 27, 2017 (edited) USA Today's headline pretty much sums it up: Box Office Disaster: Lackluster Releases, Mayweather-McGregor, Hurricane Harvey Create Slowest Weekend in Over 15 Years Quote There have been lulls around this time in recent years. In 2014, the first weekend in September made $66 million overall. Two years before that, the Sept. 7-9 frame made $67 million overall and $51.9 from the top 12. 2008 saw a similar slump in the Sep. 5–7 frame. But not since late September in 2001 have they dropped quite so low.* The Sept. 21-23 frame in 2001 earned $59 million overall and the top 12 made $43.5 million. The year before, Sept. 15-17 fell to $53.7 million for the weekend and $37.9 for the top 12. This September is poised to have a huge breakout It (current tracking predicts a $60M opening weekend), but not before a horrible Labor Day frame. A lot of earlier summer movies expanded because of the barren marketplace, to varying degrees of success. methodwriter85 September 6, 2017 Share September 6, 2017 (edited) I honestly feel like everybody is rooting for Dane DeHaan because he reminds them of a Young Leo, but it's not happening. On one hand, Ryan Reynolds has a movie that's been number 1 for 3 weeks. On the other hand, it's been during the driest box office returns in 17 years. But hey, I'm sure he'll take it. The movie's going to hit the mid-60's or even more, which is great on a 30 million budget. And it's for an original movie. Not my favorite of the summer (That'd be Wonder Woman and Baby Driver) but deserves the modest success it's gotten. Edited September 6, 2017 by methodwriter85 2 Link to comment
