alynch August 20, 2014 Author Share August 20, 2014 Incorporating some quick Ferguson (the town, not the guy who follows) jokes into the show. Edgy. Yeah, I hope they keep them up. The fact that the audience isn't going for them just makes it better. Link to comment

kib August 28, 2014 Share August 28, 2014 A little essay on a "rejuvenated" Dave: http://screencrush.com/david-letterman-retiring/ That's for posting the link. While it's a generally well reasoned piece, using the example of the Academy Awards streaker as the epitome of televised spontaneity was a poor choice. Cursory research on the streaker, Robert Opel, seems to indicate the event, as well as David Niven's quip may have been foreshadowed if not out rightly staged. For my money the gold standard for the truly unexpected television moment remains the Johnny Carson/Ed Ames ax throwing incident. A true bolt of lightning divined from the clearest of skies. 1 Link to comment

opus September 7, 2014 Share September 7, 2014 I think that's twice Tina Fey has come on this show and talked about her "psycho" second child . Hopefully we're exaggerating for comedic effect. Otherwise this is a celebrity scandal waiting to happen. "Know that kid who shot up that school. Guess who her mother is?" Link to comment
alynch September 7, 2014 Author Share September 7, 2014 It was a nice directorial touch to do the horror-zoom on that picture of her kid as they went to commercial. Link to comment
alynch September 13, 2014 Author Share September 13, 2014 That Friday show was pretty exceptional. I'm usually pretty indifferent to the videos they play during the monologue, but that Clooney one was great. And then Dave spent the rest of the show bitching about the Eagles and plotting strategy with the staff about how to handle it. Having Dave, Paul, Nancy, Tony, Bill, and Jerry from the control room openly debating it like that made for some funny controlled chaos. 1 Link to comment
jjj September 13, 2014 Share September 13, 2014 Thanks, alynch -- I caught the show in Pacific Time! The Eagles argument/negotiation was hilarious! Link to comment

Grommet September 14, 2014 Share September 14, 2014 The discussion about the Eagles was great. Poor Nancy, saying "Bill, no!"made me laugh. I missed Bill Eichner because of football going long. I'll have to remember.to adjust the dvr every week, Link to comment

Joimiaroxeu September 25, 2014 Share September 25, 2014 Gosh, Kelly Ripa looks more and more skeletal every time I see her. She reminds me of that term Tom Wolfe coined in Bonfire of the Vanities, "social x-ray". Link to comment

A Boston Gal September 26, 2014 Share September 26, 2014 Kelly Ripa has always been a bit dodgy in my book...don't ask me to explain it; I can't. There's just something "less than sincere" about her... 1 Link to comment

buttersister September 30, 2014 Share September 30, 2014 Oh, Aretha. There was a quick shot of her before Dave's introduction and she was tossing aside some sort of dress-matching cover up (clearly deciding she neither wanted it nor gave two shits how she looked without it). I thought the start of Rolling in the Deep was a bit rough (I may have been distracted by all of her uncovered self) but man, when she got rolling (no pun intended), you remembered why whoever is in second place is waaaay behind her. Extraordinary performance. Dave also called out Cissy Houston among the backup singers in the intro and she (Cissy) looked none too pleased about that! 1 Link to comment
Lnmop September 30, 2014 Share September 30, 2014 (edited) Yeah, Aretha looked awful and Cissy looked as if she wished she was anyplace else. NPH was fantastic, and Dave was great, as always! Edited September 30, 2014 by Lnmop 1 Link to comment
alynch September 30, 2014 Author Share September 30, 2014 That Sue Hum segment was one of the more bizarre bits of anti-comedy the show has done in recent memory, probably years. Link to comment
Medicine Crow September 30, 2014 Share September 30, 2014 Aretha obviously has no friends or doesn't care what they have to say, which would explain all that flapping fat & boobage. I love her voice, but gawd woman, a little modesty would be appreciated. Link to comment
Morbs September 30, 2014 Share September 30, 2014 Cissy Houston is always pissed off about something though. I didn't know it was her at first, but I noticed the grumpy looking backup singer not dancing (which considering her age is understandable). 1 Link to comment

Grommet October 5, 2014 Share October 5, 2014 I hate it when Bill O'Reilly is on the show and sounds half-way reasonable, but the questions bit was fun (I especially liked yes or no). WHat happened to Rosie O'Donnell? I used to enjoy her appearances, waaaay back in the day. Link to comment
alynch October 6, 2014 Author Share October 6, 2014 (edited) Evidently Rosie cancelled sometime between September 22 and September 25. ETA: When Dave retires, I'm going to feel really bad for Tom Dreesen. Edited October 7, 2014 by alynch 1 Link to comment

alynch October 10, 2014 Author Share October 10, 2014 (edited) That Duvall interview was fun. Reaching an age where you no longer give a shit while still having your full mental faculties should be everyone's goal in life. Him taking a potshot at Colbert was hilarious. It reminded of a couple years back where he was participating in some roundtable interview with a bunch of younger actors. The young guys were giving rather safe, generic answers only for Duvall to pipe up with (paraphrase), "Let me tell you something about Stanley Kubrick. He was great filmmaker, but he couldn't director actors for shit." Edited October 10, 2014 by alynch 2 Link to comment

alynch October 14, 2014 Author Share October 14, 2014 I enjoyed seeing stuff get dropped off the roof again, even if the cue cards one was lame as all hell. It seems like an audience member specifically requesting an old bit during the pre-show Q&A is the best way to have one happen. This is least the second time it's happened. 1 Link to comment
Grommet October 15, 2014 Share October 15, 2014 I was thinking they should always have a supply of good stuff to throw off the roof, just in case! That Black Sabbath song was awesome. I think it might have been the first time I understood the words. Link to comment
AVorlon October 15, 2014 Share October 15, 2014 I'm not sure I like the product placement for Ford, with Dave asking for a free Mustang .I have a Mustang myself, and I love it, but Dave makes millions of dollars every year and can afford any car he wants, so it comes across as shilling for the sponsor of the show. He won't be there too much longer, so why start now? Link to comment

alynch October 15, 2014 Author Share October 15, 2014 Okay, who was the new announcer guy? That was weird, yet kind of cool That was Mike McIntee, a show staffer. He's the guy that writes the Wahoo Gazette. He's usually the guy that replaces Alan when he's gone or, in this case, required to be offstage for a comedy bit. Loved the Keaton interview. He won't be there too much longer, so why start now? On the off chance Ford actually ponied up a Mustang (excuse the lame wordplay) I think Dave has already mentioned, like the time he made a pitch to be given a VW Golf GTI, it would donated to a charity for auction. In any event it would never get that far since the FCC has absolutely no sense of humor about on-air personnel receiving solicited gratuities. Link to comment

kib October 16, 2014 Share October 16, 2014 Bill Murray and Foo Fighters tonight. Is tonight the last show? That's the lineup I would expect for the final show, but Murray has a new movie he's pimping and Foo has been there all week. My heart did skip a beat thinking wouldn't that be just the cherry on the cake to have Dave call in to say "Daddy's not coming in anymore starting tonight after the show" At least that's a fresher take than Leno's "I'm gone, I'm back, I'm gone" shtick. (and apparently "I'm back" once again, getting ready to do some car show for CNBC) Link to comment
