Popular Post quarks October 15, 2017 Popular Post Share October 15, 2017 Answering a comment in the Fallout thread about production values: I agree that Arrow never had the budget of Game of Thrones. But with that caveat, I have to agree with criticisms of the production values since seasons 1 and 2, when Arrow didn't look like a low budget show. Now it does. And for once, I'm not just talking about the sets, though this continues to be a huge problem. For instance, one reason why everyone keeps waltzing into the Arrow Cave is because Arrow has cut way back on its location shooting and especially its stunt location shooting. This isn't just a budget issue - several Vancouver productions have complained about the difficulty of booking locations in Vancouver just because the city is now such a popular shooting place; even the 50 Shades people were complaining about this. The result is that instead of having attacks on the Arrow Cave happen only on very rare occasions, these happen at least twice a season now, if not more. And it's not just an Arrow Cave issue, either. Fellow network show The 100 kinda worked around this by creating an overall plot/world building situation that kinda forces people to remain in the same sets. Arrow, however, was deliberately designed around the concept of a guy going out to various places in the city to shoot people, something he actually did in the first and kinda the second season. Yes, even then a lot of those places were warehouses, but not to the same extent as in seasons 3-5. Season 1 only had one major set problem for the whole season. Season 6 already has one, and we're only in episode 1. It's not just the sets: it's also visibly limited day players/extras (this has slightly improved since season 3, but not that much), wardrobe, and, especially, cinematography. Arrow spent its first two seasons carefully creating a look that appeared to be a moving comic book, with even minor scenes carefully framed; this entire thread, which now mostly chats about gossipy stuff (which is great, don't get me wrong) was initially set up specifically to praise the cinematography and the stunts. There's a scene from the first season that carefully used rope/wire work to set up a two second image that allowed the stunt guy to slide into what initially looked like a comic book panel, since the doorway he landed in front of was edged just like one. It was amazing - and it was a throwaway scene. In the equivalent scene from this episode - that is, rope work sliding a stunt guy across a location - the final frame was just a medium shot of a guy against a concrete barrier - nothing that stood out. The second season had some beautiful shots worthy of major films. Exactly nothing in this last episode was anything near that. There's other issues - Felicity's wardrobe, for instance. In season 1, Laurel, Felicity and Thea all dressed appropriately for the scene because Arrow paid for their wardrobes. Designers dressed Oliver and Moira - you can see this in the end credits - but given that Moira was a billionaire, and the show wasn't quite as dependent on saving money on wardrobe whenever possible, thus able to say no on occasion, it worked. This season, Arrow appears to be letting designers dress Felicity and Dinah, so they don't have to pay for those wardrobes (and may even be receiving a small kickback) - with the result that the outfits are getting chosen not based on what vigilante women would actually be wearing in a secret lair or to a city event they think will get attacked, but on what the designer thinks might sell. None of this is new to this season - the day players/extras started vanishing in season 2, along with some of the sets; the show started showing the strains in season 3. It got considerably worse in seasons 4 and 5. Some directors and camera guys have done better at working around it than others, granted, but it's still a problem. So although yeah, I'm not in general a fan of picking one episode and using it to dismiss the entire show, when people criticize the production values on this show, they have a point. 25 Link to comment

This has been happening for a few seasons when it comes to Felicity. She practically lived in Sandro & Roland Mouret in S5 (which she also wore this ep). I do appreciate that they often repeat her outfits though (the blue RM dress she was wearing in the burger scene was the same one she wore in 503). BkWurm1 October 16, 2017 Share October 16, 2017 Since they've been making Felicity a revolving fashion plate since season 2 I'm at least ok with it being a character trait. I tend to assume she just has a business wardrobe she turns to anytime she's at a day job or the night one so even though she didn't have an office to come from in season 5, she stuck to the same routine of dressing as if she did. (I also told myself a little story that had Felicity and Curtis actually found any bombs she would have been immediately ushered out of there for her safety and then worked remotely so her shoes didn't matter as much as looking like she dressed up enough for the event. For a "dressed up" look, the purple dress was kind of conservative, well, for Felicity.) But yeah, It's a real shame they couldn't have had BS steal the T sphere from Argus. Diggle even would have had a reason to be there as a bystander. 2 Link to comment

Yeah, but that's the key phrase: "in development." Which is where 90% of television shows go to die. A young Batman show was initially suggested in 2003 (to accompany Smallville), then again in 2005 (after the success of Batman Returns) and then again in 2008 (after The Dark Knight.) It only finally made it into production after Arrow showed that viewers would tune into a superhero-themed vigilante show and Agents of SHIELD showed that viewers would follow their beloved film characters to the small screen. It was in development for eleven years, and did not get greenlit until after Arrow and Agents of SHIELD were successful. I think it's very fair to say this wasn't just "helped push it along," this was "allowed it to be possible," - especially since the Gotham producers have said exactly that. In contrast, Lucifer went from pitch (March 2014) to treatment (June 2014) to pilot (March 2015) to pick up (May 2015) in a little over a year. 12 Link to comment

From what I gather they are essentially like an interactive AV Club type website. They have podcasts and videos reviewing or discussing just about every show. Popular Post quarks October 19, 2017 Popular Post Share October 19, 2017 So, having now caught up with all of the various excerpts from that Bamford interview posted by @TVEcho (thanks!), let me see if I've got this straight: Bamford thinks the camera is very important, is apparently unaware that he's shooting in a 9:16 aspect ratio and that his camera doesn't have a wide lens, apparently thinks that long takes are something exciting and new*, and forced his stunt people to go through 14 takes to get a specific shot, making at least some of them throw up - admitting to this, mind you, right after SAG announced that they were going to be doing an investigation of Berlanti's productions for overworking their actors/stunt people. (And if SAG is doing this, it's a safe bet that at least one insurance company has also opened an investigation, though I doubt we'll hear anything about that.)
