S01.E07: Broke and Pantyless

Recommended Posts

First of all, where is Liza's daughter going to school that half of her tuition for the semester only costs $1800? When I was in college, going abroad cost about as much as going to class on campus, which is to say more than $3600.

Ha, I loved Liza asking Josh if his pappy taught him to play the washboard or if he just did a lot of laundry as a kid.

But Josh needs to stop being so passive aggressively jealous. Sorry, but my phone is MY phone and my emails are MY emails. I would not offer up my phone for someone who I have been sleeping with for all of a month to snoop through. And I don't have anything to hide either. I just think that everyone is entitled to some privacy (that's why bathrooms have doors!). Just because you are texting while you are out with someone doesn't mean you are cheating or being sketchy. If that's the case, then just about everyone I see in public must be cheating or sketchy.

I don't know how Kelsey thinks that Liza selling her underwear is good for her. Oh, right, she doesn't. She just wants to rationalize sleeping with Bjorn.

It was sweet to see Diana giving Liza the money she needed. I like seeing their friendship develop slowly.

But characters on TV who feel guilty about doing something, always act incredibly guilty, which is sort of hard to miss.

How can Liza talk her way out of "I love you, pumpkin." ?

I'd be telling my daughter to figure things out and go back to the financial aid office.  Now that her parents are divorced, maybe she is eligible for more aid?  Or, heaven forbid, she take out loans?

The underwear thing is so gross. Is this for real?

Since I'm currently living through the hell that is student loans, I can say with confidence that if I ever have kids, I will be moving heaven and earth to spare them a similar fate, including being up their asses about scholarships and grants. That said, since clearly Caitlin's tuition was being provided by her parents, and the payment was already past due, telling her to deal on her own would've been unfair, and I liked that Liza was so hustled about getting her the cash.

Liked that Diana gave her the money after telling her that she couldn't moonlight. She does get it, all evidence to the contrary.

I think Kelsey's eyes are open wider than her actions have led us to believe.

I thought her daughter was doing a semester abroad in high school. Those programs are much cheaper, especially if she's doing a home stay in India.

It wouldn't surprise me. But this show seems to be showing us a lot of gross stuff. I didn't need to hear about the diva cup either.

I guess I'm geezerschool, then, because paying attention to someone at the other end of a phone instead of the person who actually made the effort to be with you seems really rude to me. I agree, though, cold day in hell my actual husband demands to see my private correspondence, let alone some guy I'm boinkbuddies with.

I thought it was that Liza had already paid 1800 and The father owed another 1800 so Liza was trying to get the father's half too.

Anyways, I am not sure, but the father was supposed to be involved somehow.

Not only that, but it seemed like there was an arrangement that the father would provide the money for tuition. So there was no reason for the daughter to think the money would not come, until it didn't. It was not like she was supposed to pay herself but proceeded to spend all the money for parties and such and was asking Mom at the last minute to bail her out.

I like the pillow talk between Liza and Josh. The pappy stuff mentioned above and the Lady Gaga - Go-Go's thing. Yeah, of course she doesn't make sense to him at all. But Liza better be careful, she's been so comfortable with him lately that she may soon slip up about her real age soon.

I currently have 2 kids in college now, and I was a little surprised that  Liza didn't have the option of charging the tuition on a credit card...that's how we pay for our kids, on a bi-monthly basis each semester. Thankfully we do have a college fund for each one that we started when they were babies, it's coming in handy now and covers about half the cost. One is in a state school and the other is in community college..when my husband and I married 25 years ago, we too both had college debt and wanted to spare our kids that if at all possible.

I agree Josh is being a bit too intrusive with Liza. And that was a nice surprise , getting the check from her boss. I'm glad the character isn't being shown as 100% mean spirited, like the one Meryl Streep played in The Devil Wears Prada. I think she actually cares about Liza and it's nice to see she is asking her opinions.

The underwear thing was very weird. I'd rather sell my jewelry and car if necessary before I'd resort to that.

If I think about this show too hard it is unbelievably stupid and morally awful that she would not tell Josh her real age.  Josh has zero connection to her job prospects/career.  And if she's a friend to Kelsey she should tell her too, not that I'd advise trusting or confiding in your coworkers.

The underwear stuff is a bridge too far; I am also no fan of gross-out humour or storylines such as this.

Yes, it's a real thing and sadly it's not the grossest thing on Craigslist. I remember when ebay banned selling used underwear.

It was very gross, but I admit I did laugh when Kelsey's friend went under the table to take a picture and said, "Oh! Your underwear is really cute!" LOL.

Plus, the visual of her (I believe her name is Lauren?) sticking her hand up above the table to order more coffee. I think this episode cemented her as my new favorite character. She seems to be the go-to girl for weird shit and she's consistently amused me.

Ha, I think that one thing Liza has done that helps with trying to pass for younger is looking at her phone while she was playing pool with Josh. Most 20-somethings I know can't go five minutes without looking at theirs, even if they get no alerts about anything. And most of them wouldn't even bother to ask someone to get them another drink so they could reply in private. They would just reply without even trying to hide it.

And the poor waiter's expression was like, uhhhh, what are you doing under the table? LOL.

He didn't seem too bothered. I think he was honestly just intrigued to find them taking pictures of anything other than their dinner plates or latte art.

Is it me or have they increased the wrinkle erasing filter on her face this week?  When she smiles and tries to look perky it almost works.  Then when she looks down at her phone all serious, it's a dead giveaway.

I had heard of the panty thing.  It feels like a storyline from SATC that would have been done had the show continued.  I thought it was going to be yucky but I actually found myself laughing, which is a good thing.   SATC had a few gross storylines too, like the guy who wanted Carrie to pee on him.

I also found it weird that the tuition couldn't be paid for with a credit card, or that it was that low.  Sometimes I think the writers of this show are not aware of recent technological developments and write as if they're stuck in the 80's along with Liza.

Gotta love the over the top statement necklaces on Liza's boss.  They seem to get more outrageous every week.  She is one of those "bitch but not really a bitch" bosses that actually cares in spite of herself.

Wasn't he played by John Slattery (aka Roger Sterling on Mad Men).

Anyhoo, I do like what they are doing with Diana - she is less of a caricature.

Sutton Foster was on last week’s Elementary where she played a bee scientist who wound up being the murder suspect.  Much different from Liza!

I don’t like where they are going with Josh being a wee bit possessive, although Liza could always say that Pumpkin is a younger sister she helps take care of.

There was a cool article about Debi Mazar in the NYTimes this past weekend.  Her career seems to be “hot” at the moment at age 50, so good for her!

I can actually see Sutton Foster as a bee scientist easier than I can see her in this role.

I saw that Elementary episode. When she became a suspect in their murder investigation, I found myself shaking my head and saying, "Oh, Liza... what did you do?" LOL.

Maybe she's maxed out on her credit cards?  I know when I was newly separated there was very little available for luxuries and the credit card I had had a very low limit.  There wouldn't have been a chance in hell I could have come up with $200 let alone $1800.  Let's not forget she had to buy a brand new wardrobe, has a vehicle (if I remember correctly) and has to room with a friend because she can't afford to be on her own.

She looks great for 50.

Yup, totally expecting that to be the plotline at some point, when she comes home from India.

Debi Mazar is a great example of how great you can look if you're a pale person who embraces being pale and avoids tanning for life. I've also found that people with "interesting" sharp features, as opposed to soft, girly-girl pretty features, tend to age much better.

I stumbled across this fetish a few years ago while searching for an expensive brand of pantyhose on eEbay. I remember reading some of the posts that seemed to be bragging about the pantyhose being used/worn and I was confused...when the lightbulb finally went off, all I could say was Ewwwwwwwww!

A quick search just revealed that the used pantyhose auctions now all claim that they are laundered "per Ebay policy" - but I still found a couple of used underwear posts that make no such claim - I'm guessing Ebay hasn't caught up with them yet!

Anyway, I just started binging the show and I thought this storyline was hilarious!
