King of Birds September 21, 2016 Share September 21, 2016 What I'm getting sick of re:Ortiz is this incessant "why are you retiring/ why not play next year?" stuff. As if they can't see him run slower than an over-weight backup catcher. He's obviously in some pain with his feet. But DAMN! The man hits some huuuuuge home runs! 1 Link to comment

xaxat September 22, 2016 Share September 22, 2016 Earlier, I wrote that I was tired of what I thought was the press' premature fawning over Gary Sanchez. . . uh, I think I'd like to jump on the bandwagon. (However that will probably doom him to an 0 for 88 stretch.) 1 Link to comment
mojoween September 22, 2016 Share September 22, 2016 Aww, don't do that! I do have to say that playing the Rays is a nice pick-me-up. Boston vs. Baltimore. Impossible to root for either of those teams. It would help if the Orioles lost, but rooting for the Sox is non-negotiable, I don't care if it IS Stephen King's birthday. Link to comment

Once again mojoween, I have to take this issue to the mat with you... Also- HBD to Stephen King! Remember "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon"?? Of course you do, silly me. I understand the sequel to it will be "Who Doesn't Love Big Papi?" Edited September 22, 2016 by King of Birds 4 Link to comment

King of Birds September 22, 2016 Share September 22, 2016 Per rippleintime17's post above... copying what was on Hardball this morning. Quote With the caveat that both the Cards and Mets have a lot of intradivision games left and thus it could change, if the season ended today, the Cardinals would be Club A, the Mets would be Club B and the Giants would be Club C. Which means the tiebreaker would look like this, if all three teams finished with identical records: Sunday October 2: Regular Season Ends; Monday October 3: Mets vs. Cards in St. Louis, winner is one of the Wild Card teams Tuesday October 4: Mets vs. Cards loser vs. the Giants in San Francisco, winner is the second Wild Card team The very next day, Wednesday, October 5, the winner of the game in San Francisco would have to play in either St. Louis or New York in the actual Wild Card game, which would determine who then had to fly to Chicago to face the Cubs in the NLDS. Which begins on Friday, October 7. Got that? Link to comment

ebk57 September 23, 2016 Share September 23, 2016 I'm feeling rather discouraged at the moment. Although in all honesty, I didn't even expect the team to play .500 ball this season. So it's actually fine. At least that's what I'm telling myself. 1 Link to comment

roamyn September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 Scarry. My thoughts with his family & the organization. Maybe Mike Hargrove could reach out to them. The Cleveland Indians lost two pitchers (one decapitated), in 1994 during Spring Training, before the strike. And Bobby Ojeda effectively lost his career, even tho he tried to come back. RIP. I hope he didn't suffer. 2 Link to comment

prican58 September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 (edited) This is heart breaking news. I just felt my Big Papi hate go away because news like this makes everything else so trivial. Ortiz is talking on MLB network and he is being so kind and thoughtful. They seem to have been a bit friendly. He is speaking about a documentary about Jose. Anyone know about it? En Paz Descances, Jose. R.I.P. Marlins press conference now on MLB. Edited September 25, 2016 by prican58 1 Link to comment

mojoween September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 (edited) This is going to sound so strange, but it's one thing to say someone passed away at 24, but it sounds even more awful when it says he was born in 1992. I know that's weird but it's probably because a. he was only five years older than my son and b. I finished my freshman year of college in 1992. Regardless, that is just too young for anyone. Poor Hannah Storm. She has been amazing considering what she's had to do in the last year and a half. I'm watching the Marlins press conference and the look on Don Mattingly's face is more than I can bear. Edited September 25, 2016 by mojoween 1 Link to comment
MyAimIsTrue September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 Although not a Marlins fan I'm devastated by this news. Jose Fernandez was fun to watch pitch and always had that amazing smile, and he will be missed. King of Birds September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 (edited) This clip of Eduardo Perez talking about Jose, reminds me again that Jose was so "Pedro-esque." prican58 September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 Donnie Baseball was a wreck in that presser. He loves all his players and prob thinks of them as his kids. This is so miserable. Was watching Keith Hernandez and Gary Thorne talking about him on Mets pre game and Mex just teared up and choked at the end of his statement. This is tough. I'm glad his gf is pregnant because it gives Jose's family something to keep them going. My mom told me once that when my brother died at 12 yrs old,( I was 11) that I was the only reason she was able to go on. God bless them all. Link to comment

Lantern7 September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 Two thoughts on the tragedy, both of them might lead to be getting slapped. 1. I imagine Sandy Alderson trooping to the clubhouse, yelling, "See, this is why I don't want you pitchers on a damn boat! Because of shit like this!! Aren't you glad I brought in Ojeda?!?" 2. I found out Fernandez was supposed to pitch against the Mets tomorrow. I imagine some fan has dropped his monkey's paw, unable to cope with what his wish has unleashed. Link to comment
jennifer6973 September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 Oh good @Lantern7 I thought I was the only one questioning why he was on a boat in the middle of the night during the season. Of course I am usually asleep at 3 in the morning. But during the press conference, and watching other people talk on MLB Network they said that wasn't uncommon. Link to comment
mojoween September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 Thank you, MLB Network, for showing the Dodgers/Rockies game with the radio broadcast of Vin Scully's last game at Dodger Stadium. It's tied 2-2 in the eighth and I am totally rooting for extra innings. 1 Link to comment
prican58 September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 I did think about anyone being on a boat so late at night. It would have been one thing to be on a boat just hanging out even at that hour but to be speeding? Bad choice. But regardless, no one deserves to go out like that. I still can't believe this. Mittengirl September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 During the Tigers game they aired an interview with Casey Magehee (sp?), who used to be a teammate of Fernandez. Casey has a 9-year-old son who has both Cerebral Palsy and autism and he said that Jose was always very friendly towards the little boy and seemed genuinely fond of him and comfortable with him. Casey got teary at the thought of having to tell his son what had happened. 2 Link to comment

mojoween September 25, 2016 Share September 25, 2016 And not only is Vin calling the Dodgers game, that MLB is kind enough to broadcast, he is also basically calling the Padres/Giants game because of the pennant implications. How fucking great is this?? 4 Link to comment
