Waiting for the first pitch in London! Hopefully it's a great game, even if the Cardinals and Cubs are both having down years.

I thought this was an interesting listen. The beat writer for the Post-Dispatch sat down to talk to two British Cardinals fans plus one British baseball podcaster. It's fun to hear their enthusiasm for the game, how they became fans, what it's like trying to follow MLB from across the pond.

A Baseball Writer in King Arthur's Court

And here's a great read from The Guardian, to get a UK perspective.

London calling for devout MLB fans as historic rivalry goes international

To clarify, I'm not personally in London. I wish!

I had a similar injury to my big toe about 25 years ago. It was incredibly painful and while I certainly didn't receive the level of medical care that is being given to Aaron Judge--the ER doctor just taped my big toe to the second toe and told me to take Advil--it took several months to heal. Walking was very difficult, and changing the way I walked to alleviate the pain in my toe caused other issues in my heel and ankle.

OTOH, I've broken both pinky toes (separate incidents) and was virtually pain-free within about 10 days, with no additional complications.

Suffice to say, I was fairly certain that for Judge, this was going to be an injury with an extensive IL stint.

For a few days now, I've been thinking that the Yankees should be sellers at the trade deadline. Now I'm sure of it. I don't see Hal doing that, though.

Has it been brought up before, that David Arquette could believably play Anthony Rizzo in a movie?

I googled their names together, and yes, there are several hits if people saying that.

I’ll add this one to my perpetually expanding cast for my 30+ year old plan to make “The Jesse Barfield Story starring Billy D Williams”.

I am relatively ambivalent towards the Cubs and have a minor dislike of the Cardinals, but I watched both games and enjoyed it, especially when Ian Happ lost his earpiece and they couldn’t bother him while he was working any more.  But it was a good production by FOX/ESPN.

Interesting , though, that Michael Kay won’t go to Minnesota but has no problem flying to England for one game.

(*small voice* I feel icky that it was German).

I feel the same way. Watching it live, I was kinda hoping he'd give up a hit in the 7th or 8th, especially as winning the game wasn't in doubt. But then as it got to the 9th, I decided that I wanted it for Kyle Higashioka and even for Ryan Ruocco in the booth, who was trying so hard to contain his excitement while calling the game.

Michael Kay must be kicking himself. 😄

Bad week for ol’ Michael to take a vacation!

Don Larsen and Yogi Berra

David Wells and Jorge Posada (love this for Jorge)

David Cone and Joe Girardi

Domingo German and Kyle Higashioka

This means nothing, but all four for the Yankees are for a pitcher whose name starts with D, and if Kyle had the night off three of four catchers names would start with J.

Short MLB compilation video (3:46) of just the 27 outs from last night's Perfecto. Rizzo was the defensive hero, especially on that play in the 5th, but overall the Yankees' defense was good last night. That has not necessarily been the case lately. 😏

Watching Stanton make the plays in right, I feel bad for Aaron Judge. It must have been killing him not to be on the field for this game. 😢

Deadspin has you covered. Man, has a bigger jackass thrown a perfecto?

Headline: “YANKS GET 4TH PERFECT GAME!” Other headline: “Mets Owner Encourages Fans To Day-Drink”

Thank you for that, @Lantern7. Some commentator mentioned the the perfect game would be the first line of his obituary. OK, that'll probably happen but it should sound something like this:  "Domestic abuser and former Major League pitcher Domingo German, who pitched a perfect game on June 28, 2023, has died at the age of fill in the blank."

David Wells definitely has jackass credentials for other reasons, and truly, as much as he is beloved both in the Bronx and in Queens, David Cone also has a questionable history, especially when he was with the Mets of the late '80s/early '90s.

Oh I’ll always remember Dallas Braden because A-Rod walked in front of him one time.

Here’s some trivia that will make Moose happy - when Catfish Hunter pitched his perfect game, he also had three hits and three RBI in a 4-0 win.

Braden and Catfish were the answers to today's YES Network trivia question, Who were the two other pitchers that threw perfect games at the A's stadium? I'm proud to say I got them both. Catfish was a no-brainer, but it took me a minute to recall Braden's name. My first thought was, "It's the guy who told A-Rod to "get the **** off my mound!" Then I remembered his name. 😄

OT: This is an interesting article on perfect game data and other MLB rarities.

GERMÁN’S PERFECT GAME IS 1 IN 10,000 FOR MLB: DATA VIZ

On Wednesday, New York Yankees pitcher Domingo Germán threw just the 24th perfect game in MLB history. It was unfortunate that the Yankees played in Oakland, because a feat that has been accomplished in just one out of every 9,822 games in MLB history was witnessed by a fanbase that ranks last in the league in attendance.

Germán’s perfect game was the first since Felix Hernandez’s in 2012. On the scale of baseball history, however, there have been more perfect games in recent decades, with half of all instances occurring since 1990. In fact, there were three perfect games thrown in 2012 alone, part of a four-season stretch in which there were six (a total that would have reached seven if not for a blown call that cost Armando Galarraga perfection).

As any Detroit Tigers fan knows, there have actually been 25 perfect games thrown.

This Yankees' fan agrees. I still can't believe that Selig didn't rectify that. It still hurts to watch.

I do think that among baseball fans, the name Armando Galarraga is much more memorably connected with perfection than say, Dallas Braden or Phillip Humber. The missed call really sticks with you. Painfully.

Edited to add: I don't mean to take anything away from Braden's or Humber's accomplishments. It's just that their names are more likely to be forgotten than Roy Halladay's, Randy Johnson's or Felix Hernandez's. Also German's name goes right into the forgettable category, too.

Mets are only sending one guy to Seattle . . . Pete Alonso. He'll also be taking part in the Home Run Derby, which means they'll probably discount "select" seats based on how far he goes. If he wins, it'll be tough for me not to take a day off, even as the team drives the fans to drink and worse.

Hey, they beat the Giants and took the series. Good for them.

Any other Mets fans was to weigh in on the in-game fireworks for home runs? I think it's a bit bush league when other teams do it. The giant apple rising from the hat is enough of a punctuation for my taste.
