Checked out the ESPN troll feed -- uh, Twitter comments -- and, YIKES! there is some nasty stuff going down between Cubs fans and the BFIB, aka, Cardinals fans.

It's turning into a "Oh yeah?! Your mother!" hair-pulling.

The NL Central has some pretty good rivalries going. Cubs/Cards historically tops the list, but I think a lot of fans have a healthy dislike for all of the teams in division.

Got my latest copy of Sports Illustrated today. They're doing an article on Dwight Gooden back in 1985, when he went 24-4 and won the Cy Young Award. As if that wasn't depressing enough, there's a two-page spread of the pic with Doc, Darryl Strawberry. . . and Mike Tyson. Oy.

 

ETA: How does the local CW affiliate open the Yankees/Mets game? By playing "Let's Go Mets" (the official song of the '86 team) over a montage of highlights. Oy again.

It would be a nightmare if I ever thought the Cards were BFIB.  I'm a Royals fan.  When we refer to them as "BF", it doesn't mean "Best Fans", trust me.

Definition of a touch-and-go game. Of course Familia would load up the bases with the Mets up by four in the ninth. But he pitches his way out of the inning, and the Mets get the 5-1 win, knocking the magic number down to 8.

I'm a Cardinals fan who grew up in Chicago - the Cubs/Cardinals rivalry has never been friendly.  I was once spit on at Wrigley field.  I was a kid, the spitter was a man, and the Cubs beat the Cardinals.  It didn't help when Dusty Baker became manager of the Cubs.  There was bad blood between Baker and LaRussa from when Baker managed the Giants.  Baker and LaRussa very much supported the - you hit my guy, I hit yours.  These days it's - They pull a knife, you pull a gun.  He sends one of yours to the hospital, you send one of his to the morgue.  That's the Chicago way!  (I'm totally kidding)

 

I must admit that I was surprised by how poorly they handled it after Kang made such an effort to take the blame off the Cubs.  I guess that shows what a good guy Kang is.

Had to catch up to the Emmys tonight. Two things:

 

1. Anybody else thinking of counting out the Mets? It's not just the slump . . . if they play like this against competitive teams, how will they do against the Dodgers?

 

2. Um, Terry? You might want to pull up on the throttle. The magic number is stuck at 8. It would be nice not to sweat the final week of the season, and give the fans reason to believe in the team.

 

ETA: At least the Mets can thank the Giants for blowing another fourth quarter lead, so that the beatdown from the Yankees would be minimized in the back page.

I completely forgot the Emmys were on last night (I was watching Yanks vs. Mets).  "Mad Men" was one of the few TV shows I watched so I was very, very hopeful for a Jon Hamm victory and I know he loves his Cardinals so I'm sorry I missed his speech.  Guess I know what I'll be Googling when I get home from work tonight.

I was following Twitter while watching the game and was able to switch to the Emmys right when Hamm started. I was so happy for him - would have liked "Mad Men" to win best drama but I can't be mad about GoT winning.

I don't understand the scheduling. Why are the Yankees playing the Jays for the third time in six-ish weeks? I mean it's working out well for a pennant race but let's have a little variety here people.

Focused on the season premiere of Gotham, so I missed most of the Mets' 4-0 win over the Braves, which drops the magic number to 7. Nationals/Orioles got rained out, so the Mets are only able to get a half-game better. The Mets are going to face the dregs of the National League before their final series with the Nationals, so maybe they can coast to the division.

O's/Nats rained out.  However, I had the fabulous chicken biscuit, and 2 great beers!  And...the Coolidge 'head!!  

 

 

Which, to be honest, is my least favorite of the Racing Presidents 'heads.  Because this one looks like Silent Cal, not the Giant-Headed Racing Silent Cal.  Ah well, that's what happens when you let the White House Historical Society design it...

Jim does commentary for the pre and post Cardinal games sometimes and he is a cocky one.    Funny Fox uses him and even cockier Al Hrabosky and then for contrast the ever so Mr Humble Rick Norton.

When I went into The Muppets, the Mets were up 1-0. Afterward? Braves up, 4-1. At least the Nationals lost, reducing the magic number to 6.

It is very telling how many people are so sad about the passing of a ninety year old man who lived an amazing, full, long life. It shows how much he meant to everyone he ever came into contact with across ALL sports.

I hope Yogi's family accedes to his stated-in-public wish to have his gravestone's epitaph be, "It's over."

 

It's a common thing for a man predeceased by his longtime wife to not live more than about year past her death. Carmen died in March 2014. RIP, Yogi. You may be the only Yankee that everybody loved.

I just heard a funny story from Ron Guidry about Yogi's AFLAC commercial. Ron said that he noticed Yogi cussing under his breath, and when Ron asked him what was up, Yogi replied, "I gotta fly to California to do an affliction commercial." While Ron's racking his brain trying to figure out what affliction (cancer? leukemia?), Yogi says, "You know, with that damn duck!"

In addition to his baseball exploits, Yogi was one of the men that fought in the most important military battle this country faced since the Civil War, D Day. 

 

Truly a remarkable life.

I went to Yogi's museum last year. Nice place. Kinda on the small side, but there's a lot of nice stuff on display.

RIP, Yogi Berra.  Whitey Ford is still alive but this really feels like the end of an era.  A good man who served his country in WW2 (he was on a gunboat during D-Day) and one you never tired of seeing.

 

Yoga's 1950 season was obscene.  192 hits, 116 runs scored, 28 HRs and 124 RBIs with a 322 batting average.  Also he made 597 at bats and only struck out 12 times.  That's mind-boggingly.  He was a bad ball hitter and never struck out more than 38 times in an entire season.

While at Yom Kippur services this morning my Rabbi, who is a baseball fanatic, told a funny baseball anecdote and mentioned Yogi's passing.  I thought that was cool.

 

RIP, Yogi.  It sure does get late early out there.

Sad day for baseball. If non NYers want to see and hear the love for this man, then go to yesnetwork.com and see the videos from former players, tv announcers, etc and hear such warm hearted stuff about Yogi.

I read that in his career, Yogi struck out only 414 times in 19 seasons! What? Remarkable. I'm sure others had fairly low numbers but damn!

 

Well the fab 4 are back together.. Yogi and his beloved Carmen and Phil Rizzuto with his lovely Cora. Pals always. Miss them both. Holy cow!

Pirates clinch playoff spot.

 

Unless some major break down NL seems set to be as Cardinal, Pirate, Cubs, Mets and Dodgers.

 

The 3 NL central teams will possibly end up all having better records than the  East and West teams that win their divisions.   My even end up with the  top 3 best records in  all of baseball.

The Cubs will get the other Wild Card. And they still have a good shot of catching the Bucs so that the game takes place at Wrigley. I'm still holding out hope that the Pirates pass the Cardinals, though.

They ran a bit on Yogi in the news, about his firing as Yankees manager in 1985. I remember the day because the Mets had a wild extra-inning win against the Pirates. Gary Carter tagged out two guys at the plate, and Davey Johnson has so short-handed, he had to put Rusty Staub in the outfield. Back then, he was used exclusively as a pinch-hitter, and always got taken out after he got a hit, because he had the physique Bartolo Colon currently sports. He switched fields with Clint Hurdle, depending on who was at bat . . . and he wound up chugging for a catch when a Pirate went to the opposite field. It was pretty epic.

Congratulations to the Kansas City Royals for winning the division for the first time in 30 years!!!  My ultimate World Series matchup would be Kansas City versus Pittsburgh which means neither team will make it that far.

Ahh I don't know what to do...I like the Pirates but wish only the best for the Cubbies so I don't know what I want to happen this weekend. Is there anyway they can BOTH somehow knock out the Cards?

I really like the Pirates a lot. I'm so frustrated for their fans that a six game win streak in late September still isn't enough to catch those pesky Cardinals! I'm not sure I'd be able to take watching them lose a WC game at home again this year (last year's was only okay because I'm a Giants fan but I never even rewatched that game like all of the other Giants postseason wins). I really hope they go into the head-to-head strong and have a chance snatch the division from them. 

 

The NL is otherwise all but sewn up as far as which teams will be playing and in which games, only where remains. The AL still has a LOT of room for chaos and I vote for chaos! Give me a Game 163 or a play-in to the play-off!
