Will FTD have an aftershow à la Talking Dead?

If Hardwick was doing one, I'm sure he'd have mentioned it by now! Maybe someone else though.

Maybe Yvette Nicolle Brown will host? Hence the awkward shoutout on the TD finale?

She (and her steno pad) would certainly keep the conversation going - on her end, at any rate.  :-)

I am all in at this point.  With Better Call Saul ending, I'll only have Game of Thrones and a DVR full of questionable choices to see me through the hiatus, and I am looking forward to this late summer (???) diversion.  Bring on the rave music at the La Brea Tarpits (if and when the people finally figure it out)!

I will start off by saying that I only know of this series, from TWD forums and that clip online. It has the potential to be really good premise but will all depend on the actors making it come to live.

By premise, I mean seeing what caused the virus in the first place. It'll either be something like government genetic experimentation for military purposes, or research labs trying to find a cure for Ebola or Flesh-eating disease (which is bacterial, actually), and they end up mutating the virus and BOOM - walkers.

But the first encounters of the Walkers should be interesting and how soon people figure out how to deal with them. You know there is going to be some stupid people out there. Then of course the resulting anarchy that humanity is so good at.

But it also depends on the actors. TWD did a great job of casting. I mean, Andrew Lincoln brings life to Rick, same with MMB, SY, NR and everyone else. So I'm worried that the actors may not be dynamic enough to hold attention.

I don't think the ratings will be anyway close to the levels of TWD, to be honest. It's summer and this show I think had one episode to grab everyone's attention. We'll have to see.

I don't think so. Didn't he say "see you in September" at the end of the last TD show?

I'd guess it's all still open to negotiation at this point.

I... dunno. Thus far, the primary (and considerable) entertainment value of YNB - and her notebook - has been as a discussion resource for the host to call on to get new and unique points/counterpoints from a fan's perspective. I have a vague suspicion that could get lost if you put her opposite The Couch. Her primary task as host would be to manage the flow of conversation, not contribute to it.

The purpose of this thread is for unspoiled speculation on the show, what general direction the show might take and possibly how excited you may be (you know you are...). This thread is will also serve as a speculation thread on what you WANT to see!

Please do not post any spoilers in here.

Checking-in here, in the dedicated thread, so HalcyonDays doesn't slap me around :)

I don't see how Hardwick would have the time for another show. He's already touring, doing @Midnight, emcee/host of various panels, the Nerdist podcast, and probably producer on some other things.

Each year, the number of shows I even try seems to get shorter (especially now that it's so easy to catch-up later if something sticks around). I'm excited to have a semi-new one to look forward to.

I'm going to guess we never find out the actual cause, unless it already exists in the comics. It seems like it's being purposefully left out of the MotherShip, and not for dramatic reasons. It's pretty smart, in my opinion. You don't have people endlessly debating how plausible it is, or complaining about the science of it (see Revolution for how to fuck that up royally). The original flavor isn't about finding the cure and fixing the world (at least not right now), it's just about surviving and adapting to the current situation.

We would be those people who yell at the ditzy girl in the horror movie, "don't open the door!" over in Original Recipe if we knew the cause from FTWD (For The Win, Duh). Ugh, I hate this name!

I love the idea of this.  I want to see the initial news reports, the confusion, the disbelief, and the reality hitting people as we go through the beginning with them.

I hope they don't try to explain what caused it.  At this point we're past that.  It will soften the impact of the show.  I just want to see the shock and horror as people realize what's happening around them.

I was skeptical about this one.

Until I saw that brief promo during TWD finale.

Now I'm counting down the months until the premiere.

Looks like a most excellent way to bridge the gap between now and the next season of TWD.

Not to mention - it's set in L.A. and I'm counting on you to be my local scout & guru, Persnickety1!  ;-)

Is it wrong for me to want to see Walkers running amok at Villa Blanca, Sur and Pump?

I've been waiting, ala Zombieland and a brief one in Revolution, to see a famous person show-up in the post disaster world. (It of course doesn't fit the tone, but I can still dream.) How in the world can there not be zombie famous people in LA?!? At least in the beginning.

What an amazing spinoff that would be, the chucklefucks of SUR battling to stay alive in the ZA.

I can already picture Jax tearing off his chunky sweater to do battle...While Sandoval uses his flat iron a la Daryl and his crossbow for survival.

Bring it!!!

Now, back on topic, this show should be coming on in the next 2-3 months, I'm gathering.

I'm surprised there isn't more promotional material out there.

I loved the little 15-second promo clip but I want more, dammit!

When they first released some of the peeps that were going to be in the show I was afraid that it would be TWD, Vampire Diaries style.  After seeing the preview I'm excited.

I'm one that wants to know more of the science behind the show, but I'm not holding my breath considering Kirkman is involved.  At this point I think he just doesn't know how to explain it.  I mean you could explain the Zombie thing, but the whole "every body has it"?  That's a little more difficult because I would think it needs to be something air-born to do that.

I'm so excited to see Cliff Curtis finally be the male lead in a series.

Also like Kim Dickens, she was great on HBO's Deadwood.

I don't watch TWD, but I'm on this thread because the actress who will play Dickens' daughter has been crushing it on The 100 and we're kind of sad to lose her, so that's probably a good sign for you.

Here's this:

I wonder if I can watch this show without having watched TWD.

I am so excited. I like Game of Thrones, but The Walking Dead is totally it for me. Not having to wait until October for to watch a dystopian world filled with zombies, psychopathic brutal humans, relentless misery and despair, and little hope makes me so happy.  I like Cliff Curtis and just know that he is going to be great as the lead of this new show.

I have been paying to a lot less of the newer shows, as well - although I wish that I'd kept watching Forever, and hope that they put it on Netflix. Maybe it's just that I've had access to Netflix, so I've had more of a choice there. I am looking forward to this, though.

I remember how surprised I was in TWD when the Governor showed up to the family in the apartment (first meeting Tara) that they had survived that long and had NO CLUE how to kill/stop the walkers... or even really what they did.

I can only imagine in the early stages, in a reality where zombie movies/fiction never existed.

Is it August yet?

I wonder if the title is actually indicative of what the nature of the show will be.

There are basically three kinds of zombie story.

One is actually about zombies as characters. TV shows such as "iZombie" and "In the Flesh," movies such as "Last Rites," aka "Zombies Anonymous," and books such as "Breathers: A Zombie's Lament," are all examples of that one. I think we can safely rule it out as a possibility.

The next one is the traditional Romero model, in which humans are both protagonist and antagonist, while zombies are simply a metaphor. This is where TWD itself lives. Zombies are threat, but they're not the biggest threat. They certainly won't lure you into a stockyard car, or blow up your house with a tank. They are a dangerous nuisance to be aware of, but they serve mainly as an excuse to drive the real story arcs. Kind of like how the main plot of a western is never just two hours of finding water in the desert.

And the third model is about zombies as the actual, continuing, immediate main problem. "World War Z," the novel at least (I refuse to discuss the movie, because it never existed, la la la I'm not listening!) showed a lot of ways to do that, although some of the vignettes did go into Category 2 instead. "I Am Legend," mostly fits this category, as do a lot of low-budget horror flicks and violent shooter-games. These can be very dark, or very silly and comedic, or anything in between.

Since we already have a Type 2 series set in the Deadverse, I'd like to see a Type 3. Which, sure TWD started out as, but it started turning into a Type 2 the second Merle appeared. And I wouldn't have that any other way. Maybe this time, though, they can focus longer on making the zombies themselves something to constantly fear, and save up their politicians and murder-gangs for the main series. As slowly as the main series moves sometimes, I don't want to see ideas spread even thinner between two overly similar shows.

Good points, Cletus and I do agree that it would be nice to see a bit more of the "fear" aspect of it. But I am afraid that that type of zombie story might be sustainable as a show. After awhile, you kind of become numb to them. I remember being totally on edge during quite a few scenes early on during TWD - Rick on the horse in ATL, walkers on the highway, etc. But by season 5, big hoardes don't scare me anymore. Someone will die, sure, but for some reason it's just not as suspenseful. Eventually they're going to have start exploring other "enemies", as the first show did, or it will just get boring. But yea, they're going to need something different, besides just location, or else it will seem too much like the original.

They do have something different - timeframe. Other than flashbacks and

the initial shooting of Rick which puts him comatose in the hospital

, TWD's current-day reference starts about two months into the ZA. That gives FTWD 2+ months free rein to play with - and depending on how Production and the writers pace it, they could stretch out those two months into a couple of seasons easy.

Assuming its success, FTWD will eventually catch up to (and begin to cross over) TWD's timeframe, sure. By the time FTWD does, however, its own story lines should be well-enough developed for the series to carry its own weight.

Absolutely. The other major difference between the two series is going to be our (the viewers') perspective on what's happening. In TWD, we were pretty much on an equal basis with the characters when it came to understanding what was going on in the new world - or we were after just one or two episodes anyway. When the characters got some new information or insight, so did we. But in FTWD, we're going to be omniscient viewers: We know this is a plague; we know how it's transmitted (if not how it originated); we know how to kill the walkers and that everyone turns once they've died, and we sure as hell know not to walk up to someone who seems ill and/or confused, and then lean into them to ask if they're all right. Which you know is going to happen repeatedly in the early days of the outbreak.

(This could be so much fun and so scary at the same time. This could be one of those yell-at-the-screen stories: "OMG the killer is right behind you! Turn around! Turn around! TURN AROUND!" )

Personally, I think the premise of FTWD is absolutely nightmarish. The fact that the characters have no idea what's happening around them, so they don't know how to prepare or defend. Hell, they don't even know that they need to know how to prepare and defend. Struggling to put the pieces together. The inevitability of it all.

I can barely wait until August.

Same here. In general, I immensely dislike most of society - with the exception of family, friends, and certain PrevTV posters, of course - so watching it devolve into a nightmarish anarchic Hell should be fun.

I'm really interested to see how they will explain, or at least hint about how the virus came to be. I expect it to be similar to other shows/movies - the US Military trying to create a bio-weapon and there is an unexpected mutation or mistake made and boom - zombies.

But yeah - seeing how people are caught off guard and taking time to learn how to deal and properly respond is going to be amazing. I mean, today, what do we do? We call the authorities and they deal and nothing more to think about. Sometimes there are riots and looting, but it goes away after a day or two. In this case, that won't happen.

I'm actually pretty intrigued by how the setting will come into play, mainly the culture of LA as opposed to Georgia. I don't know much about gun laws anywhere, but my gut tells me that there probably aren't as many gun owners in LA as there are in rural Georgia. I'm also going to make a blanket assumption that their survival skills probably aren't as good, just based on them being in a city. There was a list awhile back ranking the states by how well they would do in a zombie apocalypse. http://blog.estately.com/2014/03/u-s-states-ranked-from-most-to-least-prepared-for-the-zombie-apocalypse/

I'm sure most of you have already seen it :) It ranks California ahead of Georgia, but I think there are also a lot of more rural parts of California that are helping that average. Anyway, we know cities are always bad ideas, and starting out in a city is going to be interesting.

Am I crazy of has anyone else thought about celebrity walkers? Like, can you imagine being in LA and seeing zombified Kanye West and Kim Kardashian coming at you?

We still have to wait over a month? I was hoping it would be sooner.

It is good though because this way there is only one walkerless Sunday between the end of this and the return or TWD!

The culture thing is somewhat a stereotype.  Plenty of people in Ga. don't have guns, as I am sure plenty do in LA.  But, metro LA has almost 10 million people, while Atlanta has about 3 million and the rural areas a whole lot less.  Probably more gun owners in LA.

Frankly I'd be kinda shocked if FTWD had much more in the way of substantive explanation than TWD as to the ZA origins.  A much more detailed accounting of the media speculation and hearsay reporting of the moment, to be sure.  Every indication I've gotten from the FTWD teasers and previews, however, is the point-of-view to be presented in FTWD is virtually identical to that of TWD - the "boots on the ground" view of the survivors, without peeks into the hallowed halls of power which may or may not have created this colossal fuckup.

TWD runs 8 episodes in the fall and 8 in the spring, with FTWD running 15 episodes next year, how do you think they will play it? 15 episodes spanning the summer? Or will they split it up to be summer and Dec/Jan?

Or even run it at the same time as TWD?

I'm trying to imagine that last one. Would it be The Walking Dead Sundays at 9, followed by Fear the Walking Dead at 10? Or FWD on a different night?

What about alternating the two shows in the regular timeslot, like the old Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew Mysteries? (The fact that I can't even think of a more recent example suggests not.) So I agree with this:

I'd bet on a summer/winter split. The two shows are targeted at the exact same audience; anything else, and they'd be competing against each other for market share.
