Favorite Closer Moments

I think my favorite scene (besides her stapler banging "Where are Provenza and Flynn"!!!) is her epic apology in the, season 1 finale.

I'd like to start with you, Ms. Powell. I'd like to say how sorry I am that I was unable to ignore your general level of incompetence in the wrongly obtained conviction in the case of Bill Croelick. And I'm sorry if you felt hurt and defensive about putting a man on death row for the wrong crime and I certainly hope that that will never ever happen again. Agent Jackson, I, I deeply regret that the FBI handed over two million dollars to a man on a terrorist watch list without the capacity to trace it, or managed to follow him for months without knowing his wife was having an affair with the doctor. And I hope you do much better in the future. Captain Taylor, I suppose I should apologize to you for not having been born in Los Angeles, but, having seen your work up close now for several months, I can honestly say that, try as I might, I can't think of *any* fair and reasonable system on Earth where I wouldn't outrank you. There, I hope that clears everything up. Well, excuse me, I mean, uh, I have to go. Thank you very much, Thank you.

You know, as much as I eventually to like--okay, tolerate--Taylor, and their frenemies working relationship, that is just the most golden thing ever.

Even though Brenda would later pay for it, I love the moment where she leaves Turrell Baylor to his fate.

Yes, it was technically wrong, but Baylor had the chance to get protection by owning up to what he did and forgoing the immunity he tricked the police into giving him, and he wouldn't budge. And even if Brenda hadn't let the gang member make all those calls, the gang life would have caught up to him eventually.

You know it bugs me how that Baylor's family was so obsessed with suing Brenda for what she did that they glossed over the fact that he killed people -- a little kid. It didn't occur to them to at least acknowledge or even apologize to the victims' families. Just sayin'...

Good point. In an alternate universe/different version of the script/different plot arc--Baylor's mom wouldn't have sued.

The thing that always hacked me off is that Turrell's twin brother, the soldier home on leave, was mistaken for Turrell and gunned down with (was it?) two of his buddies.  That brother was also part of that family, Turrell was indirectly the reason he died, and the mother never seemed to refer to that (although I don't think we ever saw her, did we?).

Or am I referring to an entirely different story arc?

That's the right arc, kassygreene. Now that you mention it, I'm surprised they didn't try to make a case that Turrell's days were numbered before Brenda dropped him off, as evidenced by his twin's death due to mistaken identity.

Hello,

I'm just rewatching for the first time all the show. I had forgotten I fell in love with it first 5 minutes in!

Anyway, episode 2, just after Brenda learned they didn't arrest the actor upon order from Captain Taylor, she storms off the room furious, decided to arrest him herself.

Sergent Gabriel :

- When you handcuff Dean Kingsley and put him in the backseat of your car, you're gonna have helicopters, news vans, and millions of television viewers, all escorting you back here to Parker Center.

Brenda :

- So?

Gabriel : So, are you absolutely certain that you can, by yourself, drive back here without getting lost?

Brenda (hope imgur hosting is working for me!)

HJXnizn.png?1

Gabriel:

Thank you. Thank you. I know that was very difficult for you, but thank you.

I loved it. Her face, Gabriel's intervention to help her...

It reminded me how it broke my heart when Gabriel was gone* because their relationship was really awesome from the start, he was sooooooooo willing despite his team bitching at the beginning, so teacher's pet it was cute.

* with that said maybe I'm not remembering that well, maybe he was an ass by the end and I forgot, it was almost 10 years ago after all!

Nope, he made it to the end, but because of what happened

with the gf who was spying on him and the office through him,

he was no longer trusted in Major Crimes.  Brenda took him with her to the D.A.'s office.

Yep, he was.  IIRC, he told someone (Provenza, I think), that since their ability to work together post-breakup had been destroyed, he was ok with Daniels being transferred.  To which Provenza (or whomever it was) said something along the lines that either one of them could go as far as he was concerned.

Daniels solved the problem by requesting a transfer (which is a splendid way to pre-empt getting the boot - the person who was going to reluctantly let you go will very gratefully help you with your transition, while the person who was looking forward to dumping your tuchas doesn't get the joy).  This all happened as Brenda and Fritz were squeezing a wedding into their very busy work schedules, and Provenza handled it all without telling Brenda until after she was back at work.

But oh yes, Gabriel was an a$$.  Also what I would call a high-maintenance co-worker.

Oh thank you ! It's good I rewatch because obviously, there is some big blanks to fill !

I don't know why I thought he was a goner, but after all you said, probably because he was dead to me before the end!

But I still love him at the moment, so I'll enjoy while it last!

That was Brenda, not Provenza, that he was talking to.  He told her that he and Daniels would not be able to work together, so for the good of the team Daniels should be transferred out.  She basically told him that Daniels was of more value to the squad than he was because she could do forensic accounting, and gave him transfer papers to fill out.  Awesome.

Ooh I loved the moment where Gabriel's girlfriend was exposed as the leak. And again I asked why no one bothered to point out this as a reflection of the kind of people that the Baylor family and their attorney was: that they would get someone to seduce a cop for the sole purpose of getting dirt on the squad. On top of ignoring all the horrible things their son was responsible for, including the murder of their OTHER son, they had ZERO GROUND to be so holier-than-thou.

One of my favorite moments - I saw this last night at the end of the episode "Sudden Death".  Julio had been so stoic in dealing with the murder of his brother, but at the end he just lost it in Provenza's arms.  Raymond Cruz is an amazing actor.

I don't know if I can say "favorites," exactly, but two scenes that stick with me always are the loss of Kitty and the death of Willie Rae.  Kyra's acting in both of those was magnificent. Right now, we're going through having to have a beloved pet put to sleep, and I keep thinking of Brenda telling Kitty that she wished she could make her realize that what was happening was because she loved her so much.  Pretty much anyone who has had a pet has been through that - wanting to hold on to them, realizing that it's fundamentally selfish, and making the hard decision out of love and mercy.

And the scene when she finds Willie Rae -- shrieking for Fritz, and then sobbing, "Mama!  Mamaaaaa!"  Gives me chills every time.  I wonder sometimes how hard it was to act that scene; it seems as if it would have drained everyone dry.

"Thank you SO much!"

"No, thank YOU!"

"Just Plain Brenda".

It's been so long since I've seen it. I really miss the show, and I've forgotten a lot of things.

I'm tempted to get the complete DVD set because it's the only show I like rewatching infinite times, but I'm hesitant because I kind of like the excitement of catching a rerun. I've been watching reruns of Numb3rs, but twice and you've caught every nuance there is.

Last night was the episode when the team submits letters of resignation if Brenda should be transfered out, and when she says she's surprised that Flynn signed one since he's never said anything nice to her, he replies, "You've got great legs." In the final shot they show her having chocolate and we get a peak at her legs too.

"Saving Face" from Season 3 is my favorite.  There is an extra body in the coffin of a former police officer and they both spill out after the pallbearers (including Flynn and Provenza) drop it.  F&P are trying to get their friend buried before Brenda can get control of the situation and, in the ensuing chaos, Brenda winds up being featured in a popular YouTube video.

It bugged me too, but I figured she was being manipulated by the promise of a big pay day by Weasly Lawyer who also planted a spy in Gabriel's church to seduce him and get dirt on the squad. I imagine the pay day was represented as what she was entitled to because of the loss of both of her sons.

I was watching a rerun of 5.7 "Strike Three" in which it turns out Neo Nazis (with "two strikes" which would guarantee them life in prison under Cali law if they have another conviction) are responsible for shooting 2 officers during a traffic stop.

Anyway, fav moment:
I never noticed before that after at least a minute of many officers trying to subdue the main suspect on his mother's front lawn, Mikki Mendoza from SIS uses her fake baby to clobber him in the head, which finally takes him down.

2.9 "Heroic Measures" just re-aired:

Quote

The Priority Homicide Division looks into a mother's accusations that her son's doctors murdered him.

A lot of posters--especially on IMDb--complain about Brenda being selfish, just wanting to close her case, etc., but in the next to last scene in this episode (in which she does not succeed in getting the case prosecuted, although she does succeed in revealing medical misconduct instead of Muchausen's by Proxy) she takes time to "apologize for the world we live in" to the mother of the deceased, as well as to Daniels, who initally championed the case.

That episode was forever made for me that when Brenda intimidates the tattoo artist and Sharon reacts with disgust back in the electronics room, Taylor turns to her and says "The man works with Nazis.  Do you want some Kleenex to wipe up your tears?"

Brenda's epic "apology" to the DA, FBI agent, and Taylor at the end of season one and Pope's reaction to it will probably forever own this thread for me (well, maybe tied with the beanbag gun), but this morning I watched Saving Face with Taylor trying - and failing miserably - not to laugh when Brenda gets beat up by a bride and becomes the most-downloaded clothed woman on YouTube, and the memory of it has been popping into my head all day and making me laugh again.  I think the first time around I hated Taylor so much it didn't properly register, but this time it just delighted me.

Another favorite moment is in the credits for To Protect & To Serve, when they incorporate the actors' names into the opening and closing of Provenza's garage door.

When Brenda and Gabriel's car gets shot up (the journalist in the back is the target) and crime scene footage shows Pope racing to the scene and then just collapsing at the waist when he realizes she's okay.  A terrific moment of face and body acting by Simmons.

That apology was just so awesome. To Protect & To Serve will always be my favorite Flynn and Provenza episode but Saving Face I just so close to it. The YouTube video and watching them eat the wedding food and cake throughout the episode. And of course Brenda handing back the cake topper while telling her how great the icing on the cake was.

I think my favorite moment with Pope was a dressing-down he gave Ricardo Ramos.  Ramos had done something illegal, and they had agreed to overlook it if he planted a story with some misinformation on the front page of the paper.  At one point, Ramos goes to interrupt, and without missing a beat, Pope goes "Still talking" while pointing to his mouth.  Then, after Ramos agrees, but wonders what will happen if his editor doesn't go for the plan, Pope tells him "Then it will suck to be you."

Pretty much every time Brenda and Sharon share a scene is a favorite moment for me, and I have a positively irrational degree of affection for the scene in Dead Man's Hand where they demonstrate how Allie Moore and Sgt. Dunne switched gun barrels to make it look like he was the one who'd shot her husband.  They're synchronized, and I adore it.

Also, the "we don't like each other" scene at the end of that episode.

And Raydor's little wave when Brenda comes into Pope's office in the beginning.

Plus everything in between, really.  But those moments especially.

No matter how often you watch these episodes, there are some moments that you always savor.

Last night, when Brenda gave Gabriel the smackdown - he and Daniels have broken up, he suggests to Brenda that since it is now awkward for them to work together, Daniels should be transferred out of the department; Brenda tells him that Daniels is more valuable to the squad than he is and hands him transfer papers.  His face is priceless.

And Buzz and Provenza eating popcorn while watching Daniels and Gabriel fighting in the interview room.

And Sanchez's classic version of the Miranda rights, which I wish I could remember verbatim!

In part, I think it is: "And anything stupid that you might say can be used against you."

In that same episode, other than to create plot hijinks, was there any reason for the video recorder—with the evidence tape still in it—to go on the road trip with the prisoner instead of being transported by Buzz or Tao?

Link to comment

Probably not, but it was necessary for the plot for ALL the evidence to be stolen.  And the videotape was the most important piece - with that but without the other evidence they would still have had a case.

I am willing to suspend disbelief for the sake of more Flynn/Provenza humor!

Provenza going into Brenda's office while she talking to Pope and grabs the picture of Willie Rae off of her desk and takes it into the interrogation of the car thieves.   Without missing a beat Brenda explains to Pope that the lieutenant took the picture because he has always been fond of her mother.
