Wings January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 Nichole will definitely not defend Palin. She has already spoken, albeit gingerly, about what a detriment she is to the Republican party. But Joy will create a good conversation, pushing Nichole to the limits of her polite, controlled minority position on that panel. It will be fun. 3 Link to comment
maggiemae January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 (edited) Happy to see Joy again because I like her. Not a lot of her tired jokes and derailing the conversation though, however that was not the case today. I've pretty much accepted the pretend game Fr is live and not pre-taped although they will never admit it. And this season they are showing earlier taped interviews and infomercials where it is so obvious. IE....Nicole in the vitamin info with Mario in the same dress and different days, one being on a Fr when she was in a different dress for the "live" show. Today Nicole was part of the interview with Antonio with Joy. Which brings me right back to Joy.......today she went on about being disappointed with not meeting Nicole since she was out ill.....then 20 minutes later the interview with Antonio. Go figure. Joy goes along to get along. When she had her HLN show I also felt she held back on this show to poach and better interview a guest on her own show. TheGreenKnight January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 Today was the best show in a long time, but I'm sure nobody is surprised to hear that coming from me. ;) In a way, I wish she'd been there without Mario, but he didn't derail too much today. You could tell how much better Whoopi was with Joy there, less crotchety. I hope they end up bringing her back eventually. I wonder if her being there would help bring down the tension between Whoopi and Rosie O? Surprisingly, Nicolle not being there the past two days made no difference to me at all. 4 Link to comment

They often pre tape interviews as we saw today. Nichole called in sick this morning, that is why she wasn't on the panel and why Joy was genuinely disappointed she was not there. It wasn't an act. They had clearly done that interview yesterday. They interview people who have busy schedules so to ask them to schedule their timing to co inside with the program taping is difficult to do. maggiemae January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 Friday shows are always pre-taped since Rosie started on the show years ago. And continued to be after she left. They work 4 days a week. The only exception was when McCain could come only on a Fri, irrc. Who knows....irrc that was the day EH forgot it was her daughter's first day of school which was odd for a Fri. Anyone remember that? The fact is they don't discuss current events on Fri and end up discussing the events from Thu and Fri on Mon which is way after the fact. Especially when they (and their producers) are STILL not informed. Even now that they are under the News rather than Entertainment division of ABC. 1 Link to comment
Jaded January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 I thought the gastric sleeve segment went on to long. It could have been shorter since they repeated the same information more than once.I think Joy was carrying on so much about wishing Nicole was there because she knew that pretaped interview with Antonio which Nicole was included in was going to be shown after the Hot Topics segment. 1 Link to comment
Wings January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 What I found odd about the gastric sleeve segment was the infomercial style of it. This was taped with a hand picked very tiny audience and staged questions. Why? It is not like viewers can or will seek out this one doctor. What does the operation itself have to gain from this kind of exposure? I fail to see the point of it. 1 Link to comment
Jaded January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 I learned some things from that segment I hadn't known before which was they remove part of the stomach during the surgery and what they leave is why it's called a gastric sleeve. I thought it was something similar to the lap band for some reason. Maybe it was taped like that because they had a Dr there explaining the surgery and they didn't want to come across like Dr. Oz (Thanks Oprah...Not!) who gives different advice at different times depending on who's on which makes him come across like a full of it snake oil like salesman kind of guy. The questions may have been prescreened so they wouldn't get surprised with something they couldn't answer maybe?Rosie kept repeating that people needed to make their own choices about what type of surgery and etc. so it came across to me like they were trying to be careful more so then any type of infomercial. They had this Dr. on because he was Rosie's Dr and she was thankful to him. It reminded me of when David Letterman brought the Dr's, Nurses and etc. on that treated him at the hospital when he was there for his bypass surgery years ago. I know I probably sound like I'm making excuses since I'm a Rosie fan. Honestly though these are things that crossed my mind in response to some of the posts about the segment previously. 9 Link to comment
Former Nun January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 (edited) I felt the gastric sleeve information was worthwhile (maybe because I'm fat!). I had the impression Rosie really fought to get the information presented and was forced by management to give disclaimers (way too many disclaimers). They've presented a lot of information in the past and no one was asked to state that ABC and/or Disney had no affiliation or connection with the information. As for having prescreened questions, that's the only way a timed segment would work. There were probably people who had great questions but couldn't be counted on to do well on camera--or who might want to make it their own show. I thought it was funny that the young woman in the top row wanted to direct the segment...hinting which audience member Rosie would interview next. Wings January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 (edited) I agree Former Nun, that Rosie probably pushed for it. Another answer would be they were having a hard time getting segment material and it was put together quickly. It certainly had that feel. Edited January 31, 2015 by wings707 1 Link to comment

I didn't feel like it was a sales job but the point was simply to share information about this particular weight loss option. Rosie is clearly very passionate about it and just judging by her blog, people ask her for info about it and her experience with it daily including the name and address of her doctor. The 'hand picked' audience looked like they were really interested in the subject. 5 Link to comment

Puzzle pieces fit. I had no problem with it other than it being so oddly produced. I am a huge Rosie fan. 3 Link to comment
ChicagoCita January 31, 2015 Share January 31, 2015 I have a friend who had the gastric sleeve, and I learned more about it on The View than I did from him! As a fat over-50 female with a history of family heart disease, I am fascinated by Rosie's experiences, I'm exactly the sort of person she wants to reach. So I appreciated the segment, although it did seem kind of 2:30am local television-esque. 5 Link to comment
Fisher King February 1, 2015 Share February 1, 2015 Regardless of how anyone feels, Rosie actually did something important for the viewer. Whether the gastric procedures are the right decision or not, the discussion is bound to make people think, and not just women. Older and overweight is a serious health concern for lots of people. I certainly don't watch The Spew for life lessons and I don't know the last time I learned anything important from this show, but some folks will likely benefit from RO getting the word out. Even if it was a little Dr. Oz-ish. 5 Link to comment
merriebreeze February 1, 2015 Share February 1, 2015 Now they need to do a similar segment on the importance of measles vaccinations (just don't ask Jenny to guest host). People have such screwed up ideas on this and it's very dangerous. 5 Link to comment
maryis1 February 1, 2015 Share February 1, 2015 (edited) What does that say about people? That they chose to listen to a woman who's claim to fame was posing for Playboy, over scientists and doctors. I have to step in here. Jenny McCarthy believed the research study that Dr. Andrew Wakefield produced and he is the one "credited" with starting this awful anti-vax/it causes autism movement. I believe that she was searching high and low for an explanation as to why her son was having problems and she heard about Dr. Wakefield and his vaunted study and, well, the rest is history. Dr. Wakefield was found to be a fraud who was backed by some lawyer's group bent on getting money out of Big Pharma. He is now a martyr in the anti-vax community. So, actually Jenny was listening to a doctor who was promoting this theory. We hear stories often of people with children who have problems and how their parents search and research the internet to try to find a reason or a cure. Heck, they make Lifetime movies about them. Unfortunately Jenny hooked her wagon on the wrong star. I know any number of women who learned something when they were young that has been proven an old wives' tale but they hang on to that belief. My mother had one... she claimed that someone's hair could turn gray over night from shock. As often as I would present the rationale that it was impossible to go to bed with brown hair and wake up with white hair, she still wouldn't budge. Medicine Crow February 1, 2015 Share February 1, 2015 Real Housewives of BH, Yoland and her Lyme's disease. I had Lyme Disease a few years ago & nothing I've heard on RHBH would help someone currently afflicted. Yolanda was not shown during the diagnosis & recuperatory period although she refers to it as a nightmare when she couldn't care for herself. (I guess when you're rich there's a different point at which you "need care". Personally, I had a really bad case, but HAD to manage on my own before & after diagnosis & during the horrendous medication.) 4 Link to comment
maryis1 February 1, 2015 Share February 1, 2015 As someone who has hearing impaired sons, I can understand going to the ends of the earth to help your child. I have no doubt that is what Jenny was doing. But she is like many other stars who think because something happens to them, or they play a part in a movie, that it makes them experts. While I applaud her trying to help her son, she really did do some damage to others with her promotion of this doctor. I see the same thing happening over on the Real Housewives of BH, Yoland and her Lyme's disease. I do appreciate your even breakdown of what happened regarding Jenny. I have a lot of compassion for her. Listen to your mother! Haha. I may have my facts wrong but I saw Barbara Bush in an interview explaining that her hair turned completely gray right after the death of her young daughter. Regarding my mom and Barbara Bush's report about gray hair from shock... my mother grew up in the same town as Barbara Bush and my uncle was her dad's golf caddy. Maybe it's something in the water there. :) Link to comment
SanDiegoInExile February 2, 2015 Share February 2, 2015 My guide for this week says that Rosie P is returning, either Tues or Thurs, can't remember which. None of the guests this week sound very interesting or current. I'm pretty sure that they indicated RP would return on Feb 3, which is Tuesday. The Cristela woman is co-hosting every other day this week, so I guess they are going with 5 hosts most of the week. The show really hasn't focused much on guests for years, even during Sweeps. Hot Topics have been taking up the first 36 minutes of the show almost all season. And with RP returning, they will probably try to build the chemistry among the hosts by adding even more Table Time. Good luck with that. Link to comment

Former Nun February 2, 2015 Share February 2, 2015 Jenny McCarthy's Playboy experiences are no reason to discount her published medical opinions. No one should take medical/scientific advice from any showbiz people. These "stars" receive/accept all kinds of pitches to make money from their popularity--books, exercise devices/programs, skincare lines, etc. I'm sure many who blast McCarthy hang on every dietary fabrication Sherri Shepherd writes or brags about. 1 Link to comment
