Some classic Lithuanian rock. Majority of the band's lyrics are either psychedelic, depressing or a sort of making fun of social/political life in general. This song is called "State of Lithuania" (1989)... so, it has a lot of that making fun (critiquing) USSR (and Western Block) politics in Lithuania.

The approximate lyrics:

Hey, you, you Western European,
Taking such an interest in Soviet Union.
Hey, you, educated foreigner,
This is still not Russia, Russia is far away.

Hey, you, fragrant European,
Paris-Moscow friendship train.
You say that the map has no indications
Of no Estonia, no Latvia nor Lithuania.

Hey, you, splendid democrat,
What you know about our life?
Hey, you, naive aristocrat,
How easily the East deceives you.

Hey, you, far off neighbour,
Three hundred miles more and you're at the edge of the world.
Hey, you, close lad,
Stop and look through the window.

State of Lithuania - try to say it
State of Lithuania - Dawn of Baltics
State of Lithuania - to die or to live
State of Lithuania - world's Lithuania.

Hey, you, European vegetarians,
A tasty pie of Baltic nations.
Hey, you, exalted parliamentarians,
Toss the maps drenched in blood.

Hey, you, shrewd diplomats,
Strong is the will of downtrodden nations.
Hey, you, the word of Thunder says:
Let it be from now:

State of Lithuania - try to say it
State of Lithuania - Dawn of Baltics
State of Lithuania - to die or to live
State of Lithuania - world's Lithuania.

Another one from "Antis". This is actually the only album of them that I own (came out in 2007).

"Drunkard". Absurd and relevant somehow:

Drunkard is willing to be drunk.

Drunkard - a dangerous obligation.

A drunkard must have stamina and be sturdy, because he does not know where he will drink next.

Drunkard is on patrol, ready to pounce.

A drunkard is always searching for a reason to drink.

Drunkard must drink and not disappoint - a loving, drunk nation is observing him.

Let's drink whole lake, and then let's drink the ocean.

Let us raise glasses for a true thirst.

Let us offer the last drop of wine and the altar of wants shall not extinguish fire!

Songs of a drunkard are his favourite weapon.

The speeches - deepest mystery.

The motto and the glorious purpose - when you can raise a toast for your motherland.

Let's drink whole lake, and then let's drink the ocean.

Let us raise glasses for a true thirst.

Let us offer the last drop of wine and the altar of wants shall not extinguish fire!

Only time will evaluate the exploits of a drunkard.

The drunkard fell, having drunk himself to death.

His legacy - toasts, balalaikas and remaining bottles yet to be drunk.

Let's drink whole lake, and then let's drink the ocean.

Let us raise glasses for a true thirst.

Let us offer the last drop of wine and the altar of wants shall not extinguish fire!

I was surprised even though it was satellite radio (90s on 9) to hear this song.  I always thought it was too risqué.  I never recall hearing it on the radio.  The video I know got banned in its day.

It reminds me very much of my Catholic school days.  She was really the 1st person to sort of expose me to these part of life if you will.

I still recall first time seeing the video back then as a teenager.  Had no idea Madonna was putting out a single or working with Austin Powers so this was real cool back then and out of left field. The days before I discovered the Internet.

I considered going to her Celebration tour but the logistics and cost of it seem a bit much for me.  Plus she has that reputation of being late to her concerts

Nothing new, I mean, I started Fleetwood Mac discog today, and I can say that I like their version of blues better by a wide margin than I liked Rolling Stones, but let's see where the albums take me :D

Now, I'm just listening to some Lithuanian songs. Some folk metal from theatre play I'd wager that they made back a couple of years - Aistė Smilgevičiūtė ir Grupė Skylė (Aiste Smilgeviciute and Group The Hole) - Pilkapių Sniegas (Snow on the Barrows).

Approximate Lyrics:

Swim through the river...

The moon's beam splinters in fragments,
Stars as if  fishes kneeling on water.
The sails crumble and pour down as if bones,
When the Death speaks, do you care about songs?

No one knows where time disappears,
The snow from the borrows crumbles between fingers.
Spirits in hunger looking through windows,
The doors towards Eternity open.

Knock towards the mountain…

The snow as if nails dive in to palm,
The Frost's Army rolls through the sky.
How can you break the amour of the Reaper?
How can one live through the All Hallow's Frost?

No one knows where time disappears,
The snow from the borrows crumbles between fingers.
Spirits in hunger looking through windows,
The doors towards Eternity open.

We are hungry spirits, who have long forgotten the sleep,
We only snow down after turning to snow on the burrows.
We are the hungry spirits of endless Autumn,
Bring us milk or fresh water.

Erotica was the 2nd music video of her's to be banned from MTV after "Justify My Love". In the first couple minutes of this video the guy she was enjoying is on the side of the bed suddenly watching her embracing a woman. The look on his face made me laugh. I say that because it looked like he was thinking about how he was in a video doing what he was doing with Madonna and getting to watch her with another woman which so many guys love to see in general. The guy kind of looked like Carlos Leone who's Lordes Dad.

I remember the backlash in regards to the Erotica album. After reading the wiki for it I didn't realize that she had to go on such an apology tour.

I don't remember if I knew she was going to do that video or not. It's a favorite though because of how fun and silly it is while also being really catchy. Mike's reactions as Austin Powers to what she's doing are great too.

I think this is Billy's most overlooked song

I'm an 80s baby and I too often wish I was at the very least a teenager during that decade

Another 80s baby (only lived three years during it). Being a teen in the 80s looked so fun based on the music, TV shows, fashion, etc.

Since I was a teenager in the '80s (turned 13 in 1985!), reading these posts makes me think I need to apply for AARP. Thanks a lot. 😋

Haha sorry! That's how I feel reading the Coachella set list. I grew up loving artists like Spice Girls, Backstreet, then more R&B. But the older I get, the more I'm into rock, preferably 80s/early 90s rock. I still listen to Taylor Swift, Rihanna, Beyonce, all that stuff, but it starts to sound generic to me at a certain point. The darn kids these days don't know what they're missing when it comes to music!

It was a tough time in terms of social policies, but if you weren't among those left out in the cold by the widening gap between the haves and the have-nots, it was at least a good time to be a teenager when it came to going to concerts, house parties, and just hanging out on the couch watching MTV (unless, of course, you were looking for Black artists).

Ohh absolutely! I thought I might elaborate more in my post but didn't. I feel the same way about Old Hollywood. I love the glamour, how the stories didn't have bathroom humor or explicit sex scenes, but the bigotry can stay in the past. I know we still have a lot of problems in 2023, but I'd 100% prefer to live in the present over any other decade. I just enjoy a lot of old school entertainment.

Back to the topic, this version of Separate Ways is hauntingly beautiful. Steve Perry's voice is unbelievable. Soooo talented.

The Erotica era was a little before my time and before I became interested in her.  I knew there was backlash against her but didnt really know she had to go an apology tour.  I mean her Human Nature song seemed to kind of be directed at her detractors not long after.  Fyi, I think the guy you are referring to is Tony Ward...  that was her boyfriend back then.

This is probably my favorite actual song of hers on a banned video.  I was in high school at the time.  I think it only premiered a few times after midnight because of the violent themes.

But yes speaking of age, I tend to think people born in the 1990s and later would have no idea how huge and controversial she was.

On another topic, in the "Same Name, Different Song" thread, I had mentioned "Stay With Me".

There was a recent discussion on Twitter about The Righteous Brothers. Both Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were great together, but their solo work seemed largely overlooked. (Maybe save for "Time of My Life" for Medley, since that was connected to the Dirty Dancing movie craze at the time!)

Anyway, while I am actually a grunge/current rock gal, I did like the standards ("You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" and "Unchained Melody", though again, I associate the latter to a Patrick Swayze movie, Ghost) that my parents had exposed me to.

But I never knew Hatfield (the one that did sing "Unchained Melody"/the tenor of the two) could really belt out the soul. Someone recommended "Stay With Me", and he killed it:
