Couple does mean two. As in two people make a couple. :D. However if someone asked to me to pick up a couple of oranges. I would've gotten at least 5 or 6. Because who would only want 2 oranges?

Agreed.   Technically one should ask for a few or several oranges,  but no I most likely don't want only two oranges.

If I told you: Please buy me a couple of oranges from the shops.

Would you buy me exactly 2 oranges or more than 2?

Does the word couple mean "TWO" of something to you?

I can see where the confusion would be. Merriam Webster dictionary provides these definitions involving people (this is the main definition):

a : two persons married, engaged, or otherwise romantically paired

b : two persons paired together

The people were lined up in couples.

But further down ...

4: an indefinite small number : few

a couple of days ago

So yeah, if you're talking about people, a couple would be two, a pair. But for other things, "couple" would tend to be more than 2.

It's the same argument my parents have been having for decades, Mellowyellow. My dad subscribes to the "more than 2" interpretation for stuff my mom asks him to get. Unfortunately, he goes overboard and gets 10-12 and that's certainly more than a couple, LOL!

Thanks guys! Will show him this in the morning!

I subscribe to the "more than 2" whereas hubby is in the camp "You asked for a couple that means you asked for 2." I have always thought it would be interchangeable with me saying "Please buy me a few oranges from the shops."

Everyone I know says they would buy me more than 2 oranges!!!!!

@SmallScreenDiva haha glad to know someone else also has this argument!

I told him the Arrow forum is good at English and will settle this once and for all!

I side with the hubby.

Couple is two.  Couple means pair.  Pair means two.  Even if the dictionary says otherwise, IMO that's just pandering to the ones that popularized the wrong meaning, lol.

For me, couple means 2

Few is 3-4

Several is 5 or more

But I do side eye hubby for not questioning if you really meant only 2 because as someone said, who only wants two oranges?

I know this group hates Reddit, but some of you here do seem to like Star Wars or Muppets or both, so I thought I'd spread the word here that Frank Oz is doing a Reddit AMA on Jan 4th at 6 pm.

Frank Oz is generally very willing to discuss a lot of technical, behind the scenes stuff about handling puppetry/difficult puppetry camera angles/how to get a puppet to swim through water and not make this look awful/uncomfortable puppet stances/additional voice work.

Who recommended The Marvelous Mrs Maisel? @BkWurm1, was it you? I'm on episode 3 and I'm really liking it. It's very clearly from the same mind as Gilmore Girls but I think I may like it better. I don't know whether it's because of the lack of too much pop culture references or that the parents are much more involved from the get go. I love Midge and Susie but the parents almost steal the show. Joel reads very much like Christopher to me, as in you deserve  better, Midge (Lorelai).

Never watched DVD, but I've been following her on Twitter since she signed up, and she's been a joy with her posts.

If I did, it was only in the sense of "oh that looks really good" so I'm really glad to hear it is good.  Now I need to track it down.

Sue Grafton has died. She was one of my heroes, and her character Kinsey Milhone was one of the best.  She was always encouraging with new writers, and was honest about the rewards and challenges of writing. She died before completing her last novel in the alphabet series, and her daughter commented that for them, the alphabet is always going to stop at Y.

Guys I need your unbiased opinions. hehe sorry to plague you all again but I figure since we are on a hiatus, you all can help me with my jewellery woes.

If you can go to this link and look at these pictures:

https://www.whiteflash.com/wedding-rings/contemporary-comfort-fit-wedding-ring-2710.htm

Does this scream "Rose Gold" to you? Is it too dark? Does it look like grubby metal? Do you detect any notes of pink? Does this shade look pleasant to the eye?

I am in the process of researching and putting together a custom made rose gold bangle. My other forum is helping out but I'd like as many opinions as possible, especially from people who are less likely to overthink on it. I'm worried this will end badly and it'll look like a freaking copper pot! They tell me I am the first customer who would order a RG bangle ever!

Gawd I can hear my mother's voice now "Why are you wearing dirty copper?"

Argghhh RG is so hard to deal with. Even the same cuff at Tiffany (same design) the RG shade was completely different between the two sizes I tried on. One was a lot nicer than the other.

Won't be the same colour because mine will be 14K but this is an actual pic of their 18K RG which doesn't look like RG to me.

Compared to the yellow gold on the site, it’s less yellow but if you hadn’t said it was rose gold, I wouldn’t have noticed the difference.  How accurate are the photos usually?   Also suspect was them putting in a rose colored background.  Hard to tell what is the ring and what is just reflection.

I would have thought rose gold would have a minimum color standard it had to meet to be called rose gold.  Is it a reputable seller?  What’s their return policy?

No return policy for a RG bangle. Lol I am the only weirdo to ever request one so it's not like they can sell it to anyone else!

VERY reputable. I went and had a look around in Sydney and found some really nice shades of RG that I liked. But the diamonds they use, although sparkly are not top notch. For the same price, you're getting top notch cut diamonds that all have a uniform look. I just have qualms about the shade of RG and it doesn't seem like they know what shade they will produce either since it varies with every manufacturer and with each batch.

EVERYONE else orders a white! There's a return policy on the WG!

I just got done watching last night's episode from the new season of The X Files and, man, Chris Carter sucks. I really, reaaallly dislike him and his writing so so much. Why is he so determined to ruin my fondness for the show and Mulder/Scully? "Impregnated with science," my ass. Such a dumb, disgusting, and extremely offensive/insensitive "twist". What a hack.

That gif reminds me that yesterday there was a news item that Harvey Weinstein tried to kill Mira Sorvino's career after she turned him down. Basicallly Miramax told directors not to hire her.  Her daddy Paul just found out and he was all "Lemme at him."

The names of alleged sexual harassers just keep coming. Yesterday Albert Schulze temporarily stepped down from Soulpepper Theatre while it's being investigated.

I'm currently thinking he (Smoking Man) did do it with science and just was gross and cruel enough to leave her to wake up without clothes as some awful head game.  But I'm also not convinced it's his.  Dude is a lying liar who lies and should be dead.  I reject the "twist".

Not sure if this is the right place, but someone has recommended The Punisher.  Has anyone seen it and if so is it any good.  They also said I should watch Daredevil first since I don't know anything about the comics.

I appreciate anyone's opinion.  Thanks

I loved The Punisher, great series, has more depth then you would expect but, it is very violent. The Punisher is a spin-off of Daredevil S2 and, it really helps to start there to get Frank's origin story.

I loved Daredevil S1 and felt like Frank Castle was the best part of Daredevil S2.  You could probably skip Daredevil S2 and still appreciate The Punisher. However, there is one character/relationship that pops up a few times in The Punisher that originated on Daredevil that is well worth the watch.

Punisher was awesome.  It is pretty violent but is more about the treatment of veterans, PTSD, and decisions made during war than violence porn (which is what everyone was expecting).  Before it started I thought it would be a one and done series and couldn't fathom Marvel finding a way to make the story last.  Not only did they set up further stories for Frank but I'm now actively waiting for season 2 to be announced.

I don't think to absolutely have to watch Daredevil first but it will provide a foundation so I would recommend it.  Frank doesn't show up until season 2, but that won't make a lot of sense without watching 1 so keep this in mind.

Isn't that old news? I swear something came out a couple years ago about the EP making racist or sexist (or both) comments to actors. I thought it was one of the fired male actors complaining about it?

I don't know, I'm not all that familiar with it, just thought we discussed it here.

I don't remember the details, but I believe Ricky Whittle (and maybe his mom???) has referred to this before.

I remember Ricky Whittle's mom accusing the show runner of being racist and being a bully a couple of years ago.

I was thinking Rickey Whittle but, then second guessed myself because I sort of didn't know he was on The 100.  I remembered this really hot dude from The 100 that got killed off and, just recently discovered that, the hot dude was Shadow Moon/Rickey Whittle.  Small World.

I don't think it is a coincidence that shows that have had really problematic storylines end up having behind the scenes issues.  I'm starting to think networks should just launch investigations of harassment based on crappy treatment of women and minorities in the in show stories.

You mean -12° C?  No way it's -67° anything ?

@BunsenBurner it hit 113 degrees F where we were. If you drive about 50 minutes west, they hit 122 degrees F. We had to carry our worm farm indoors out of fear that the worms would die. Some of my trees have burnt looking leaves!

Total it is 95 degrees! Trying to brave it to give the aircon a rest after running it all day yesterday! Yesterday was the second hottest day in Sydney ever since temperatures have been recorded apparently!

You guys are freezing!!!! Have a hot choc!!! I've resorted to ice tea in my weather!

I don't think I could live in 95 degrees, much less 122.

A couple of years ago meteorologists added a couple of new colour bars to the temperature charts (I think purple and black) for Australia because it was so hot.

It hit -40 windchill here yesterday.  That's the point where it doesn't matter if you're talking Celsius or Fahrenheit, it's the same for both. (In the weather weirding we've come to expect, it's going to go up to +4C/39F for Wednesday.  People are being warned to keep off of what looks like frozen ice over water.
