Roseanne recast Becky for a couple of seasons.

Yeah, and Bewitched recast Darren and That 70s Show recast someone, but I was trying to think of post-pilot examples from drama shows.

I'm sure there's more than the ones I listed.

Yeah it is much easier to get a way with a recast in a comedy.

I mentioned Roseanne because they they went back to the original Becky after quite a while, and switched them around a few more times. Being a comedy they were able to make a lot of jokes about it.

Regarding recasting characters with new actors, some post-pilot nighttime drama television examples:

Dallas brought in another actress to play Miss Ellie for a season or two when the original actress had medical issues.

Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman recast Colleen, reportedly after salary disputes with the original actress.

Game of Thrones has recast at least three characters, off the top of my head - the Mountain, Tommen, and Daario Naharis. I believe with Tommen the idea was to age the character up a little. The show blamed scheduling conflicts for the other two.

And, over on Supernatural, Katie Cassidy was replaced as Ruby by Genevieve Cortese.

So yeah, it happens.

I stand corrected. Sort of.

I think Donna Reed had problems in the Miss Ellie role, and as you said, the recast was for medical reason. Dick York left Bewitched for medical reasons, he had a degenerative spine injury.

KC had only played Ruby in 6 episodes.  It's big to her fans but not that important in terms of the show itself.

I don't know about Game of Thrones although recasting to get an older actor (of SORASing as they say on the soaps) is not uncommon.

But I still think that they wouldn't have recast Laurel after the pilot because of her fanbase and because they would have thought they could still make it work.  And that they couldn't recast such a big role after midseason 1 without it looking bad if it wasn't the actor's decision.

About Outlander,

how many times does Claire get raped? Times! Jesus H. Are there multiple perpetrators?

Threats of rape is the number I can't count. Actual rape so far is somewhere between 0 and 1. The way it happened I'm not sure if she stabbed him before or after it started. :( When they talked about what happened it focused more on her having killed someone so I couldn't tell if that was why she was in shock or not. She probably was but I cling to deniability.

Yes recasting happens, but it would have been hard beyond s2 to make it believable since it wasn't just KC that was the problem it was the whole writing & directing of LL since mid-s2, not just the acting. And it seemed the network was behind her for a good portion of her contract, so even if one side wanted to recast the other side seemed content to keep her.

Thanks everyone for mentioning the recastings, I honestly had forgot about some of them. I still think if they are done it is awkward because unless the actor wanted to leave, there is always the rumblings about why. KC & Arrow had enough of that without the recasting, so I doubt they wanted to deal with it. Sometimes the devil you know is better than the devil you don't. No guarantee they would have found a better LL.

Is it appropriate to like this post since it is so dark??

I enjoy the love story of Jamie & Claire, the graphicness of the show I could do without. But overall I love most of the characters and the interactions. I will say I am impressed that the show is brave enough to be an equal opportunity when it comes to graphic quality. They do not make it all about just one gender being brutalized or graphic. Yes, there is historical sexism, but its hard for them to get around that if they want to be true to the times the story takes place.

Oddly enough, despite very good reason to dump the show after  all the brutalization, I must confess, what finally convinced me never to go back is Claire's stupid plan to change history on a grand scale.  It's so obviously going to be a failure that it already renders the plot of next season pointless.

I can only assume you say five since you quit the show, the show lasted 8 seasons.

The original actress was okay, but I thought Alyssa did a better job at getting who Phoebe is and just gelled better, chemistry wise, with the cast, but it's been years (a decade even) since I watched that unaired pilot.

Riverdale (The CW) pilot preview: THE teen soap of the late 2010s?

So it's not a live action Archie's Weird Mysteries?  That's disapoointing.

And, over on Supernatural, Katie Cassidy was replaced as Ruby by Genevieve Cortese.

No offense to Mrs Padalecki, but Katie Cassidy was worlds better as Ruby.  She would have nailed the "I'm awesome" speech in the season 4 finale.

I haven't watched in a long time either but the Phoebe actress just seemed to hold herself to mature for her actions and dialogue. And Andy was recast as well. Which was a great decision imo. I also remember Piper was much weaker then she was when the series actually aired.

I think there's hope still.  From that article:

Description: Archie, Betty, Veronica and their friends and enemies and parents, explore the surreality of small-town life – the darkness and weirdness bubbling beneath Riverdale’s wholesome façade. The whole town is shaken when the mysterious disappearance of a teenager turns into a murder case…

I don't know who was originally cast as Andy but I really dug him and Prue. That S1 finale was brutal.

Spoilers for the book series,

she's raped in the second book and she's also gang raped by multiple guys at one point... And that's just what I can remember.

Thanks for all the answers about Outlander. Wow. It makes me wonder why Claire doesn't get back to her present day.

She's in LOVE!!! Plus the man that is the big evil guy happens to look just like her husband.  That might put you off a guy. Plus original husband cheated on her.

But yeah, there's a point in the first season where she thinks Jamie was going to be killed and she agreed if he was, she'd marry some other guy because that guy could protect her. And all I could think was that is the time when I'd be desperately trying to get back home.  Without the hunky younger guy that adored her, I just don't see the point of sticking around.

Major Spoiler:

Claire does go back, pregnant with Jamie's baby. She raises her in "modern" times with the original husband and becomes a doctor.

She eventually got back through the stones in after 18 or 20 years, can't really remember, and the daughter follows through fully grown....and she get raped.

These are awful stories. On multiple levels.  How miserable.  I can't imagine the show following faithfully to any of that.

More spoilers for the books

it has to, it plays a major plot point because she becomes pregnant after the encounter. Unfortunately there's no way that the show could be anything less than faithful with the rape, unless it goes an a complete opposite direction

But following the daughter's storyline means abandoning the mother's, right? That's what I find hard to believe they would do. It's Claire and Jamie that everyone is tuning in for.  What would they care about some new heroine even if she was their kid?

Did the season one of the show end faithful to the books?  Did they sail off to France in the books as well?

The Daughter isn't the new heroine, she is a character during Jamie and Clair's story

I think S1 was pretty faithful to the books...I read them around 2001 while travelling, so very hazy, they do go to France in the books, but boy there is a LOT of stuff happening. I stopped during book 4, it just wasn't my thing in the end. I thought I would enjoy the TV series more, but knowing what is coming I can't be bothered with the DRAMA.

To your first point,

Ehhh... not really. Particularly with this storyline, just because Brianna has a storyline doesn't mean that they're abandoning Claires, particularly because Claire does play a major part in it. The books do move off into focusing on other people but that's not happening for a few more books (so a few more seasons), and this storyline itself is not happening until season 4 (presumably), but there is absolutely no way to avoid it unless they go in a completely opposite direction.

To your second point, yes. The show was very faithful to the books, it didn't really take any liberties and it certainly didn't change any of the storyline. I'm not sure what the landscape of the show will be even after season two ends, so I can't accurately state how it's going to be in a few seasons time, but I do think because they've stuck so close to the books so far, it's unlikely that they'll change any major storyline.

Thank god I already knew for a while this is a rapefest (George Martin has nothing on this author, although I guess D&D may be fans), so I didn't even watch the pilot. Those spoilers are just something. Blech.

I've stopped watching Gilmore Girls somewhere during season 7 because I knew Lorelai was going to get back with Luke but his seasons 5-6 behavior has completely soured me on this pairing, and she actually seemed pretty happy with Christopher during their short-lived marriage. So it was a happy ending for me, even if I didn't ship them.

I'll still tune in for the Netflix revival, but I'm more interested in Rory at this point (and I'll be thoroughly spoiled in case she ends up with Logan whom I cannot stand).

I only liked Jess, personally. He was the only one who had any chemistry with Rory. But I wasn't that invested in the show, overall.

On another subject, I'm binging The Magicians (watching ep 6 currently) and since I cannot go into that forum because I'm afraid of being spoiled (I'm 100% spoiler free which is VERY unusual for me), I'll say it here. Is it weird that I like Julia's story more than Quentin's? I mean, Brakebills is mostly OK, but Quentin is just... so boring. I'm not sure this character type translates well on-screen. He's way too passive and introverted. Things happen to him, but he doesn't do ANYTHING. It's so frustrating. I do like everybody else, although Margo kinda bugs at times.

As for Julia, she's a huge mess and a trainwreck, but it's fascinating to watch. I kinda love the "I Just Want To Be Special" trope, it always resonates with me. Also, her story's the one that seems to have real stakes, unlike Brakebills. Plus, so much bad stuff has happened to her (even if she is often at fault) that I can't help but feel for her.

Also, looks-wise, the actress playing Alice should play Eliza Taylor's (Clarke in The 100) sister, and the actress playing Julia does give me KC vibes.

I'm hoping Rory has a new guy. I like some aspects of all her boyfriends but none of them completely. I personally never rewatch season 6. I hate that season. S7 had a lot of picking up the pieces back up but I like how it ended-with potential but nothing set in stone for either Lorelai or Rory.

I did quit. It got a way too silly for me and honestly I didn't care for Phoebe and she would just never go away.

And this is my NOPE face.  Shudder. Christopher is the worst.  I always saw Lorelai as manic and trying to force herself to think she was happy while with Christopher.  Yep, just a big nope.  I also had more problems with Lorelai's behavior in season six. Luke was behaving like I would have expected Luke to behave.  I hated that it was fine that Luke be patient while they waited for Rory to come around but Lorelai couldn't give him more than a couple months before she wrote off their engagement and self sabotaged.  Sigh.  Stupid BTS plot driven crap.

I am with you about Logan.  Dude did not understand Rory at all if he thought she'd be fine turning into a happy homemaker with oranges in the backyard.  Plus I never forgave him for stealing from Richard and Emily.  (And I wanted to frequently punch his smug face)  In my dream scenario, a mature, grown up Jess would be my pick but I guess I could tolerate a matured, grown up Logan if I have to.

Is it wrong that I more than anything want Lane to have divorced Zach (or he's died, I don't care which) and reunites with Dave?  Never got over that :(

Lol, no I don't think so but if might have seemed like that since she and Milo V. dated for a long time.  They were dating long after he left the show though.  I loved Gilmore Girls but AB wasn't the strongest of actors and when it came to love interests, she always seemed far more believable around the one guy she was actually dating than anyone else.

Hi Team Arrow

Our lovely and talented aquarian1 is doing some new and exciting RL things that are making it too hectic to mod a forum as *ahem* active as Arrow.  She is stepping down as mod in this forum and the equally lovely kariyaki is stepping in.  Please be gentle!

Thank you for putting up with us as long as you did aquarian1 and welcome kariyaki!

I apologize in advance.  We really can't help it. ;)

What's going on with Jane the Virgin? I just read a recap and Rafael has a brother? And Petra apparently

? I know it's a telenovela spoof, but it's a bit much, especially if you consider Petra's dead lover from last season and his twin. And Rafael's brother is supposed to be shady? Wasn't that Michael's brother's deal?

I wish I knew what was going on with that show, but I stopped watching a few weeks ago. A few weeks into the season I realized I don't like Jane as a character anymore. I liked Michael so much last season, but turning him into a saint this season so the two of them could get back together finally drove me over the edge. Thankfully, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend is giving me everything JtV gave me last year, so I don't miss JtV. I just hope CEG has a better sophomore season than I think JtV has had.

Rory Gilmore is one of my all-time least favorite tv characters. HATE her. Soooo precious, always reading tomes in the town square, where everyone could see how deep she is. BLECH. Every single character constantly telling her how amazing and wonderful and special she is. Then when she finally has one setback, when that guy told she she didn't didn't have what it takes to be a reporter, and the first thing her whiny butt does is prove him right.

So there's talk on Twitter about TWop coming back. I said something negative on Twitter about it, and it turns out there are TWop stans? I guess I stepped in it and I seriously had no idea. I liked the reviews but I think the moderators mostly really overdid it. Is there some big TWop drama I don't know about?

Link to comment

I'm not a stan but, I certainly loved TWOP. I found that (for the most part) the community was so large there wasn't a sense of group think, you got varied discussions and point of views. The best part was that (for the bigger shows) shipper stuff was kept to it's own thread or sub-boards which made it easy to avoid shipper wars.

The best part of TWOP was the snarky recaps, I really miss those.

I was very sad when TWOP closed and would love to have it back. Of course so much time has past it probably won't be the same but, i still hope it comes back
