The Portal: Connecting Dublin and New York City in real time

Aha! Thanks, @AnimeMania. So when one of the characters described The Iris as "you know, like The Portal, that thing that happened last year," they were referencing reality. I love how this show does that.

Very cool. It's hard to tell from the photo in the article, was the image quality as high-def as The Iris was depicted?

I don't know how they figured out the "by whom" part and knew where to find her but Angus saw her being followed by someone wearing the tartan.

The two old ladies saw the victim of the week be sprayed in the face by a man wearing a tartan.  Elsbeth walked away while they were squabbling over what the pattern because her phone was dying was and they spotted a man wearing the tartan in question following her.

It's clear how they knew the tartan guy was the murderer. What's not clear was how they knew tartan guy/murderer was the guy at the perfume company. Is it just that he used an atomizer?

Angus would have given them same information Elsbeth had, plus a description of the guy's build. The murderer also falsified the woman's drug test that got her fired, the police would figure it was someone from the company and looked for there her first.

I just thought during their 'dance' she seemed like she was about to say she wanted a divorce, then decided to save it for another day

I thought the same thing because she didn't seem to be enjoying the dancing as much as he was.  I was actually feeling sorry for him after he went to so much trouble to take lessons and arrange a very special evening, and she really did look underwhelmed.

I have had a crush on Ioan Gruffud since Horatio Hornblower so I thought this episode was delightful.

I really only know him from that utterly ridiculous Sarah Michelle Gellar series Ringer in which he played the handsome husband very handsomely. I do like Ioan but I am annoyed that I saw too much hype for this episode in advance so I anticipated too much and couldn't enjoy the story properly as it unfolded. To be honest when Angus popped up in NYC to meet Elsbeth and announced that he was by trade a fireman I really thought that meeting and their kiss was going to turn out to be just a lovely dream of Elsbeth's (which might have been followed up by a real meeting in the future). Since it was apparently real I am looking askance at him for apparently cavalierly disappointing his band's fans.

It's not that I disliked the ep, it's that I did not enjoy it as much as I wanted to do and think I could have done under different circumstances.

Ione Gruffud can come up and give me a big ole smooch any time he likes! I have loved him since I saw the series Forever.

I wonder if the flasher girl got any real traffic to her website.  I could never pause at the right time to read her placard. Did anyone catch that? I was wondering if it was a real thing, or if there was  a joke there placed by the Elsbeth people if you follow the link.

Oh, and to the poster on the prior page who forgot that Elsbeth attracted firemen, there was also an episode where she had to interview a fireman and turns around and all the guys are doing pushups, etc. to try to impress her. If I recall correctly, she quickly directs Kaya away before she can see what's going on.  It was just a little moment but it really cracked me up! I want some fireman-attracting pheromones like that, please!

and thanks for also reminding me the name of the series I watched him in.
I suspect he’s one of those who can charm the birds out of the trees IRL too.😉😍

Actually I believe FlasherGirl was a bit of a quasi-inside gag related to the Iris’s real-life correlative - the New York/Dublin Portal - which had to be shut down for a while due to “inappropriate behavior”. 😆

Wasn't it that Elsbeth, knowing the victim worked at the perfume company connected the atomizer to that? Then she went poking around at the company, talked with the suspicious acting exec. in his office and saw a scarf with the same pattern on his coat tree, and that's how she knew it was him. At least that's how I remember it.

Oh for sure, that wasn't lost on me. I guess I thought that was common knowledge as it made the national news but I guess not everyone was aware of it.

But how did the police know to go there to save Elsbeth?

I suppose, but the show could have used a line to explain that.

I re-watched the scene and there really is very little connective tissue that got them from point A to point B.

Kaya is aware that the company is a suspect because of the drug test.

The Scottish group knows who the killer just based on his scarf. But they never saw his face because he wore a mask.

Elsbeth's phone is already dead when she gets to the perfume company, so she never had time to tell anyone where she was going. When they all burst in in the end, it seems like they KNEW he was the murderer but all Kaya says is Angus called the switchboard. There is no explanation at all of how they connected mysterious man with a scarf to that particular executive at the company.

So yeah,  it feel like the show felt Angus calling the switchboard was all the explanation we needed.

It's convoluted but it started with those two women in Scotland who saw the tartan scarf. Then when Angus later talked to them about it they happened to see the man walk by again in the Iris in NYC wearing that scarf and they told Angus that's the guy. He tried to call Elsbeth but her phone went straight to voicemail so he called the police and told them she went to that office. I think she told him that she was going there in a previous call but I don't remember. So that's when they went there.

I blame Outlander. This episode felt like a nudge-nudge wink-wink to romance novels. Set during Valentine's Day and using several romance novel signifiers. Romance has a thing for Scotsmen. Not so much for Welshmen.

That too.

Slight spoiler:  in the next episode (last night) they reference

Spoiler

Brigadoon

Everyone’s talking about how the perfume scene went on too long at the beginning, but it was to make sure we all knew it was Chekhov’s perfume bottle.

Elsbeth does have a bad habit of visiting murder suspects without back up. It was about time that bit her in the ass.

Sometimes she has a team waiting to make the arrest, but a lot of the time she goes poking around and provoking dangerous people without any protection.

Spoiler

if you want to see “poking” around wait till you see the next episode

I didn’t know about the real Portal. So sorry I missed it.

From the transcript:

  • [ELSBETH AT POLICE STATION] Elle-Même faked the drսg results. Something bad was coming out of that lab.

When Angus saw Tartan Scarf Guy following Elsbeth in a menacing manner, Angus tried to call Elsbeth to warn her, but it went to voicemail because her battery was dying.
When the police arrived in the nick of time (like in Murder She Wrote):

  • [ELSBETH] How did you guys know?
  • [CAPTAIN WAGNER] Angus in Scotland. He called the switchboard.

Not the tidiest writing/editing.
