I'm a New Yorker and I know what you're talking about, but Trump embodies a negative stereotype of a New Yorker. And wishing someone dead and having the power to actually kill people isn't the same. If Trump has his way people will die. Or at least get shot in the leg.

Many (most?) vehicles that are built in North America go over the borders multiple times. For example (I think this is how vehicle manufacture works; at least it's how it has been described to me, the person decsribing it could've had things wrong): some tiny component of a door panel is made in China.  It's imported into the US to be installed in a plant in Kentucky or elsewhere.  That door, is then shipped to Canada or Mexico to be installed into the actual vehicle. Will the tariffs be applied at each border crossing?    Will the widget be tariffed and the vehicle tariffed again?

Even Martha R (ABC News) gave Trump credit for returning of hostages...because he said there would be "hell to pay". 

I hope he won't, but the policies he and his party want to enact don't exactly fill me with confidence. I'm  sure there were poeple who downplayed Hitler back when he was getting going, too. 

And even if he doesn't? I don't want to give him and the GOP an inch, because if we do that, they'll take a mile. 

Bottom line, when your party makes a point of actively trying to take away civil and human rights from women and minorities, you're not on the right path no matter how far you get with that plan. History does not look kindly on those kinds of leaders.

If he'd just eben an annoying guy who still did his job and got shit done and wasn't committing crimes on the side, people would've dealt with it.

But that's not what happened. 

Also, it wasn't just Democrats who investigated him. There were a few Republicans who actively had the guts to try and hold him accountable, too, namely Cheney and Kinzinger. So it's not like this was just plain party bias happening here. Quit downplaying the significance of his crimes and trying to brush them off as people just going after  someone they personally didn't like.

My point being, the Demorrats aren't the only ones who go after someone for their sexual escapades, and in the Democrats' case, the sexual encounter wasn't the issue, it was all the crime surrounding it that they went after. With the GOP, it was the sexual activity itself. That whole situation was a prime example of a party gunning for someone simply for partisan reasons - the GOP was so desperate to try and get Clinton on something, and that's what they landed on. Similar to all the endless investigations they've kept doing with Hilary. 

Difference is, when it came to the Democrats, we actually found legitimate evidence of serious crimes that Trump committed.

I see things differently. When we know better we do better. I don't have a problem changing Columbus Day to Indigenous People Day. I don't have a problem with statues of Confederate leaders being taken out of public places and put in museums.  And as far as being taken down because of unfavorable connections all I can say is you are known by the company you keep.

Exactly.

I don’t believe in fully demonizing people or erasing the good they did. But I’m also not in favor of white-washing or ignoring. I’m in favor of putting things in context of the times. It’s complicated and nuanced — something university-level professors and students should be capable of conveying and understanding.

Threatening teachers with being fired for not toeing a party line seems, to me, like it just fosters an environment of paranoia and censorship.

The CEO of TikTok, will be at his inauguration. We also have these other apps and sites, that take our information, and track us.  Also, our phones.  
 

I only downloaded TikTok again, after the election, so I won’t miss it, but Zuckerberg was apparently one of the people pushing for the ban. Someone I followed two weeks ago, there and on instagram, said she won’t be using instagram anymore. A lot of people are refusing to go to Meta apps, because of this.  

I’m still thinking about shutting my social media down.  All of it.

Yeah, Zuckerberg and Meta lobbied for the ban because they were losing people (and money) to Tik-Tok and they could not buy it. Meta has tried to copy the success of Tik-Tok with their Instagram Reels, but that does not run on the Tik-Tok algorithm and is therefore an inferior product. So, the only other option for them was to ban it. Also, Meta works with the US government in ways ByteDance was never going to so the US government has a stake in this. The US government does not want the Chinese government to have access to data they cannot have.

As long as they're still around for people to see and learn from the past.  I not only studied East Asian/Chinese history (and it was my main focus as a history undergrad...those years are, after all, PRIME to "discover" or "research" your heritage) but have family members who lived through it.  My dad and his direct family were lucky to be in Hong Kong, but my grandmother's parents and siblings were stuck in mainland China.  It was not a fun time for them.  I was surprised that there was (legal) contact between mainland and HK (according to my dad, anyway) and when my dad was finally able to travel to the mainland, he was surprised at seeing the contrast between them and Hong Kong.  He talked about going to a restaurant where the daily special was scrambled eggs and tomato.  To a Hong Konger, that was, well, nothing special at all.  

In any case, we don't want the Three and Five Antis campaign to happen nor do we want a Cultural Revolution-like campaign this century, which is what I'm worried about.  Right now, I'm kind of seeing a Three/Five Antis-Lite vibe.

I live in a poorly educated state.  This would just make it worse.  This is all part of them wanting to turn our country into the rich get richer and everyone else gets poorer and dumber so they stay poor.

On January 27, 2020, the Commonwealth of Virginia became the 38th state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment. The American Bar Association (ABA) has recognized that the Equal Rights Amendment has cleared all necessary hurdles to be formally added to the Constitution as the 28th Amendment. I agree with the ABA and with leading legal constitutional scholars that the Equal Rights Amendment has become part of our Constitution.

It is long past time to recognize the will of the American people. In keeping with my oath and duty to Constitution and country, I affirm what I believe and what three-fourths of the states have ratified: the 28th Amendment is the law of the land, guaranteeing all Americans equal rights and protections under the law regardless of their sex.

Same here. Poorly educated. Financially poor. Deeply red (other than a few pockets). This plus our governor’s war on education (we now use public funds for school vouchers — enough to make private school affordable for people with some means, but not enough for the undesirables) makes me shudder for the future.

We’re near the bottom or top of every list, depending on what’s least desirable. The only good thing is our cost of living. Anyway, want to see what could be coming? Look down here.
