I'm in the middle of watching today's episode, so forgive me for just firing off random thoughts, but why on earth would anyone ever take Howard Stern's thoughts on sexism seriously?  We're talking about a man who has had porn stars and strippers regularly on his show, made all the misogynistic comments possible and has just been gross for basically all of his adult life.  Of course he thinks all men make horrible comments about women in private.  He's a creep who probably only hangs out with other creeps.  Why is Joy quoting him as if he's some great defender of women?

I wonder if he and Joy are friends. He claims to be more evolved now and hangs out with mainstream celebrities. He wants to be perceived differently, but I'm not defending what he did in the past. He wants to be taken more seriously and must think we have amnesia. Plus I think age and his wife have mellowed him out.

Add to the fact they're being given asylum status, housing and monthly stipends all of which are overwhelming the system, then yes, Americans be they whatever race or ethnicity, have a right to feel resentment towards these newcomers.

Really? Undocumented migrants are getting housing and monthly stipends? Can you show me where you heard this?

The following quote is from a Newsweek article from 04/24.  This pertains to migrants who were bused to NYC.

"A family of four migrants in New York City receives more monthly funding than a family of four that includes a military veteran who receives disability compensation.

New York City has taken in more than 175,000 migrants and spent upward of $1.45 billion just in fiscal year 2023 to shelter, feed and provide services to migrants. The city has said there is "no end in sight" to the copious numbers of migrants and projects that an extended timeline of the current rate of migration means a cost to the city of approximately $12 billion by the 2025 fiscal year."

"Migrants coming to New York City are being given prepaid debit cards that in certain cases, like food assistance, dwarf the amounts provided to families of legal status. For example, the average family of four's monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) payment is $713, but migrant families of four receive $1,400 a month."

This quote is from LawHelpNY

"Immigrants who have just arrived in New York may be eligible for public benefits that provide money and medical care, including:

Cash Assistance provides you with some money twice a month so you can buy things you need, like toiletries and clothes.

Medicaid pays for your medical care, like going to the doctor or getting medications.

WIC helps women, infants and children buy things they need, like formula or cereal."

HOUSING usually means a hotel room which the city pays for but there are those that are being housed in paid apartments.

Please note that the above refers to a pilot program initiated by the NYC government for the city of New York. It was in partnership with Mobility Capital Finance and independent from state or federal government. The city believed it would be cheaper than meal programs as it allowed migrants to choose their food but has decided not to renew its contract.

Stern has changed a lot from his early days. I don't know that much about him, but I think he has apologized for the way he used to talk about women.

Early days?  Stern was still saying sexist/racist stuff up until about ten years ago.  So, until he was 60.

Yes, he's very much mellowed on the radio over the last several years, but even in the early years, the radio guy was only a persona, not the real Howard.  The real Howard went home each night, ate the same nightly meal of rice and chicken, and was shy and introverted.

He and his second wife have been together nearly 25 years and have made it their mission to foster hundreds of cats over the years, in addition to their own pet cats.

He's had therapy for many years and he's apologized for the horrible things he's said about people like Rosie O'Donnell (they're now friends) and Kathie Lee Gifford, who has forgiven him.

I don't think she's the only one!!  To be honest, I'm getting pretty annoyed with her myself.

Laying blame anywhere is always a "Monday quarterback" thing, but unfortunately, that is always the case in any major loss or upset, whether it be politics or sports.  And, not that I'm laying blame anywhere, but there were several missteps in Harris' campaigning, obviously.  Sunny is just as bad as those Republicans she constantly condemns for never wanting to see or acknowledge something went wrong, or IS just wrong.  She's so rigid and stubborn in her beliefs, it's frustrating.  She absolutely REFUSES to see things from any other viewpoint but her own, which is, to her, the ONLY viewpoint.

I was glad to see Sara push back, raise her voice and give her opinions - with pretty valid reasoning, imo, as to WHY so many people may have chosen to vote for Trump.  Sara was kind of looking at things from the "other side" and trying to express that.

What happened to Chris Christie today?  While Sarah McBride was an interesting guest, I really wanted to hear what Chris Christie's thoughts were, after Tuesday.

Sarah McBride was an interesting guest. She had some good practical advice for the party and seems like someone who could have a civil dialogue with the opposition.

Sunny asks, "What's wrong with America?" - this was the popular vote selection - you have said you want the popular vote to be the decisive factor - well, here it is. The "problem" with the popular vote is that it isn't always going to go the way you want. Great, when everyone thinks the same as you do, not so great when most of them don't.

Also, as insulting as Sunny's question is, maybe she should dive into that question and figure out what "went wrong" for all those people that they would choose such a flawed person over someone that Sunny preferred. It could be illuminating. Sara and Alyssa tried to outline some of the reasons that people might have voted that way, but Sunny is not ready to let go of her condescending perspective.

P.S. Good for Sara not letting Sunny steam roll her.

Sunny feels like a lot of people (especially black women) feel right now.   She's going to have to get herself together soon though and move on (to the find out portion of FAFO) 🙂.   Anna seems to be a little further along in her processing.

Alyssa has good points, but she's similar to Sunny in being too absolute in her opinions.   It's not an either/or scenario.   All of what they are saying can be true on why the outcome was it was.

I see nothing wrong with Sunny asking that question.  Being Black I know exactly what she meant. Since Sara and you are not Black in America, you will never understand.  Black women should just check out and let America be America. Sunny and other Black people should burn their capes. Whatever will be will be.  We did our best and we have no allies.. Black people need to mind their Black business and try to survive in a world that sees us as less than human just like our ancestors have done for centuries.

I don't care how small the club is. I'm with Sunny. Those facts she lists over and over about who Trump is and what he's done should be a dealbreaker for people in any sane world. Ana posted a quote on her social media yesterday that I feel is so fitting right now: "Wrong does not cease to be wrong because the majority share in it."

Thank you Sunny for not mincing words and continuing to call out what is shameful even if it is popular right now.

Yes. Just because Trump won doesn't mean he isn't the same narcissistic dangerous man child.  He did damage his first term and he will do damage his second term. I hope we are able to withstand it this time.

Throughout the campaign Sunny kept saying Harris was running a flawless campaign.  Every time she said that I thought I wish that were true.  And that clip of Sunny asking Harris that question was seen by millions of people. Not saying that was what doomed things but it sure didn't help.

Hi Ellis Bell Lives.

I read the Newsweek article - thanks - and when it said a family of 4 was getting $1400 a month to spend at grocery stores, that means each person in that family is eating on about $12 a day. In NYC. And I'm not sure if they can cook much at the Roosevelt Hotel, but maybe $12 can go farther if they could.

These recipients are all asylum seekers. Some may be denied asylum, but others will be accepted if their cases are approved - in other words, their lives are deemed to be in danger back in their home country. I am glad we don't let them starve and they get medical care. It's the humane thing to do.

I fully admit I am not greatly educated on this issue. Between federal and state laws, and city ordinances, there are multiple systems dealing with unauthorized immigrants. The news story mentions that this is a pilot program, and will benefit 500 people, so we (or I) don't know if this program will continue.

But I do appreciate your taking the time to alert me to this, and I will pay more attention to it now.

Thanks,

Sue

The ladies forgot to mention how Democrats did really well on down ballot races and state legislatures all over the country. Republican supermajorities in some states no longer exist.. So it was not a blow out as the pundits have said.

I also get annoyed when the working class conversation is brought up because it only means White people who are struggling. Black people have been excluded from everything in this country since 1619 when they were brought here against their will. Don't our struggles count too? Apparently not and despite that we always try to do right by this country and not just us. Those days are now over for a lot of us. The capes are burning..

It also annoys me that whenever Democrats lose they are told to look within and reach out to Republicans, stop being too far left elitists but the same is never said to Republicans. I am glad that Sunny brought that up but nobody wanted to hear that.

I loved it that Joy brought up the fact that all of the gains that have helped people in this country like social security, Medicaid and Medicare was because of the Democrats who are called far-left and Republicans have been working tirelessly to get rid of them calling them entitlements.. I want to see what will happen when these things no longer exist..

She should stop caring for people who don't care about her. Black women are checking out and going on vacation. Black women are too empathetic and it always bites us in the ass.  Rest Black women, we deserve it.. Let them destroy themselves.. We know how to survive during dark times.. Draw on our foremothers strength ingenuity grace and joy to get through whatever comes our way..

was just about to say this. It's totally fine for her to feel this way but it is impacting her work and professionalism too much. She cannot even have opinions without interrupting. Asking voters (most of whom who are less well off than you) that they need to introspect about why they are bad is so beyond parody.

this election was a statement to democrats but not voters saying they will never vote democrat again. in my state of North Carolina, Kamala lost but 300K+ trump voters voted for a democrat governor, lt gov, SOS, AG, school super, and flipped a congressional district. These voters can be easily won back.

Therapy, a lot of therapy.

His interviews are some of the best you'll hear anywhere, mainly because the show is usually given over to the interview rather than a short 5 or 10 minute segment & he has turned into a very good interviewer.

People who say they hate him etc have mostly never listened to one of his shows & just read the headlines from years ago. He's a very different person now than he was back then& even in those days it was all a front & he was always a different person at home.

And I expect with a therapist who wasn't a much worse person than all their patients. For every great therapist, there's know-it-all monster Dr. Phil types who talk out their ass.

I was glad Joy took it to Sara and Alyssa as much as Sunny today, the show is just off-balance with Sara and Alyssa tagteaming one person nonstop. Naturally both Sara and Alyssa try to keep Joy quiet these days, between the age barb Alyssa threw at one point during the interview and Sara complaining about Joy complimenting the show's theme song--glad Joy doesn't give a damn what either of those snakes want.

Loved Ana for that comment about how she's a Republican, so she's not going to lecture someone else's party like Alyssa, LOL. I couldn't believe how absurd Alyssa was when she claimed there were good things that came out of Trump's 2017 tax bill. Whew! It was nice seeing Joy and Ana being playful with each other at the end there.

We must have watched different versions of the show. I don't recall Sara and Alyssa hammering home any hard truths. They interrupted and yelled a lot and Alyssa kept waving her wee little stubby fingers in other peoples faces (she does that all the time and it drives me crazy).

But you sound just like Alyssa in this post. Thank goodness Ana was there to make her salient points in her adult indoors voice and Joy too.

Alyssa seemed happier, almost giddy,  the past few days, which irks me mightily, as I'm sure it annoys the hell out of Sunny, even more than before.

Her side won.  Her true Repub colors are coming out more blatantly now,  as she is speaking up more, arguing more, and ridiculously, giving Dems advice.

Oh, but wait,  didn't she vote for Kamala? CYA, at the time,  I believe.

I think he won because  for a long time  among white lower/middle classes there has been a growing mistrust of government officials, and generalized feelings of being disregarded, derided for their lack of formal education, and forgotten in the media's conversations about issues of concern. Trump was their friend in low places, their voice, finally. Nevermind his abhorrent views, promises, and actions. Ironically, they say they support the police, but they don't want government or the law in their business,  so his being a felon was a badge of honor among thieves.

Then Repubs fed them the lie that the  immigrant/ Bipoc were the villains taking away what they were entitled to before, as well as hammering home the false message of the economy being so much worse than before, despite stats saying different, and the real issue of corporate greed.

Sunny is fighting the good fight, although understanding his base per above may  help her strategize  more effective arguments and ways for building  a stronger Dem resistance/message during the next 4 years and for the future.

God help us all.

I’m sure Alyssa is thrilled that the Rs have control of the senate and likely the house so they can put through their conservative agenda. I’ve read articles that suggest Congress will disregard trump’s crazy agenda because he is already a lame duck. Not sure we can count on that but I think wayward Rs are hopeful they can get things accomplished.

Thank God for the filibuster.

I have not seen one shred of evidence over the last 4 years that they will even whisper a word against him, never mind disregard his crazy agenda. Whoever wrote those articles is just looking for some morsel of anything to cling to.

Good observations on all points. To take it one step further, there is a great divide among voters in regard to where they choose to get their news. We tend to self-sort, and listen to news sources that confirm our views rather than challenge them. The conservative media have been denigrating government for a couple of decades, feeding their sense of being ignored by "the elite" and creating an audience for Trump's message.

Joy and Sunny seem most at a loss to understand the voters who wanted Trump. If they watched conservative media for a week, and saw only what Trump voters see, they might have a better understanding how these voters can come to believe what they are being fed.

And even further, I think the Ds played into the elitist perception by rolling out celeb after celeb to endorse Kamala. Plus the “shh, you don’t have to tell your husband” ad was condescending. Two missteps.

I was sort of agreeing with you, but then it occurred to me that we are always second-guessing ourselves. When you look at some of the ads the other side put out (and I didn't see many because I don't live in a swing state and almost exclusively watch recorded programs so I FF through ads) it seems they go big and bold and use whatever celebrities they can without worrying about offending anyone - in fact, being offensive is the whole point.

Exactly! And they spent a billion dollars doing it. Supposedly, they went over budget and are now in the hole for 20 million.

While Alyssa isn’t gleeful, she’s constantly asking EVERY.SINGLE.GUEST. “Where did Harris go wrong?” As if it matters now. She won’t be running again. And it’s not like if they “fix it” as Alyssa keeps telling everyone every day, it will change the results. I’d rather they just move forward. And stop blaming Harris as if she’s personally responsible for the loss.

It's funny to me Alyssa now thinks Harris did things wrong.  Before the election she was on the podcast with Brian and she didn't sound like someone who thought Harris was making missteps.  She thought Harris was going win.

To be fair, a few days post-election, one where there seemed to be a reasonable likelihood that Harris could win, asking where she went wrong seems like a question that many people were asking. While Harris might not run again, those who run campaigns should understand why they didn't do better. Moving forward without any idea of how to improve would not help other candidates. Also, the candidate is the person who is seeking election, and they should be very involved in how the campaign is run, so as the prime focus, it is understandable to suggest that Harris bears a lot of responsibility for the loss; otherwise, she'd just be a puppet, doing whatever her handlers said to do, and I don't think that is true or should be true for any candidate.
