Ever read any of Ruth Goodman's history books? I forget which one it was, maybe "How To Be aTudor" but she spent quite a bit of time explaining the people were a lot cleaner than we are led to believe they were in the old days. Women wore a shift next to their skin, which absorbed all the sweat and so on, outer clothes were clean. Lots of interesting info on how people stayed clean and kept their homes clean too. Really interesting! I love her books, and I've watched all the TV shows she's done with other historians, too. Tudor Monastery Farm, Wartime Farm, Victorian Farm. Great stuff.

This sounds fascinating. Unfortunately I just checked and my library only has audiobooks by her, not ebooks. If I spend $10 on one of her books, which one do you recommend?

Seconding your recommendation for anything Ruth Goodman has done.
As well as the farm shows she and the other historians she works with also did a series on trains in England. I have zero interest in trains but it was fascinating.

Depends on what period you're interested in. There's How To Be a Tudor, or How to Be A Victorian, I've read them both and they are both excellent. Also How To Behave Badly in Elizabethan England, and How to Behave Badly in Renaissance Britain. TV shows include Victorian Farm, Victorian Pharmacy, Edwardian Farm, Tudor Monastery Farm, Secrets of the Castle, Tales of the Green Valley. I've seen most of them (available on Prime or Britbox or Acorn, often) and they are VERY entertaining and enlightening.

I would LOVE to see that but so far can't find it anywhere. I adored the Victorian Pharmacy series, it was great! I've seen all the farm shows too. She's so cool, such a nice approachable demeanor and so SO knowledgable!

Oh, and you know about Thriftbooks, right? How to be a Victorian is available there now for under $10!

You will not be sorry! then you can watch the farm series! They are really well done!

I also recommend the books of Ian Mortimer--he's written a few books called "A Time Traveler's Guide to Medieval England", "A Time Traveler's Guide to Elizabethan England" and "A Time Traveler's Guide to Regency Britain".  I read the medieval one and it was very good. The Elizabethan one is in my to read pile. Well, one of them!
