I'm glad it picked up again after last week, it was enjoyable and informative.

I loved the way Ol Batista picked the only man on the planet with no sense of humour to crack his last joke to.

Tattoo is becoming rather tiresome, looks like he's still after revenge in the finale. let's hope he doesn't make it into S2.

The juiced up Walkers are looking good, it'll be nice to see them running around causing believable mayhem for once.

Well, it was a little talky in the beginning, but the ending and the background stuff was solid! I guess Daryl's going to die, right? No way he could survive a walker on steroids. They'll have to change the name of the show.

Carol's "appearance" was a bit of a letdown. I guess that's it for her for the season. Who's back? Rick? Negan? I can't think of any other baddies who are still alive.

The punishment for fighting is death by walker? That seems a bit extreme. They still need to explain how that lifeboat got across the Atlantic with a live person on it.

I really enjoyed it. The action sequences were taut. The juiced-up walker that took out Mr. Juno creeped me the hell out. Also kudos to John Ales who did a bang-up job as said Mr Juno.

And while I'm handing out kudos, a basketful of them go to David Zabel for insisting on using dancers for the zombies. The ways in which they can move their bodies can look other worldly, and a couple of them have made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. It's going to be a long time before I'll be able to lose the images of the All Zombie Orkestra.

I think we saw Daryl's dad make an appearance when Daryl lost his shit with Laurent. I'm sure he heard the words "stupid" and "worthless" multiple times a day as a kid, followed by something more violent than he gave to Laurent. That was bad enough, but for a second I worried he was going to raise a hand to the boy before he stopped. Good scene, and it really took me off guard; I don't remember ever seeing Daryl going off on a kid like that before.

Did Carol seem off to anyone else? Almost like we she was trying to speak in code? The only person I can think of who would be back would be Morgan. I thought his parting words on FTWD were that he was going back to be with his old friends, and they would be our gang at the Commonwealth.

I love that they're letting Isabella have her own plot line; that not all of her actions are solely in service of pointing to Daryl as the main character. I think that Clèmence Poèsy and Adam Nagaitas work fabulously off each other; I fully believe that their two characters had a complex past together.  And you know what? Kudos to Norman Reedus, too, for not turning this show into an ego project. He has a lot of say on how these stories go down, and he's not trying to wrest screen time away from his main co-star.

I have to admit that I would not be sad if Isabella is part of S2.

This episode did leave me with one big question though: Why did Genet hunt for walkers from the US? She said she spent three years getting that ship sea worthy (and let's not think too hard about where the fuel supply came from). Wouldn't it have been easier and faster to get your walker supply locally? There's a whole European continent just to your east there, Genet. Unless European walkers are tainted somehow?

I'm really liking this show.

Wow, they really crammed a lot in here.

I appreciated the flash backs. The "mutiny" was underwhelming since it was literally just Daryl and Trucker Hat. I missed a bunch of what Genet was saying because I was waiting to see what Daryl did on that boat that warranted a nation wide manhunt. I laughed at the contribution of Trucker Hat to the escape: "I'm trying, do I look like a fast reader?".

Even though we know they're there and not a surprise anymore, seeing that walker scramble up the stairs like that was still a startling, and dare I say exciting, visual after over a decade of shufflers. And then the way it just tore into that guy! I don't even know how to explain how it felt to see something different.

Another sad moment when we got a peek into Daryl's childhood when he went off on Laurent. It felt like we were meant to be hearing how his dad spoke to him. But seriously what the hell, they are making Laurent too stupid to live. I understand he's a child, and he was sheltered, "soft" to quote Daryl, but he's been out here for a minute and this kid is literally not learning or listening to a damn thing.

wonder if LeCarl still thinks cutting the boat loose was such a good idea.

I don't think he is capable of thinking that way, of considering or recognizing actual consequences. How in the hell was such an extreme action like trashing the boat his solution to not wanting to be alone? Why didn't he just say that to Daryl? Daryl's been short with him, but Daryl has also listened to him, they've had conversations, and Daryl did get it when Laurent just told him what he was scared of.

What was going on with Quinn and Isabelle was ...interesting? I can't figure if Quinn is just supposed to be a 'bad boy' but necessarily a bad guy? It seems odd for him to be hung up on Isabelle after all this time, I don't know. It's hard to tell if he's truly being sincere or if he's got ulterior motives? He's not wasting any time wanting to jump back into it with her even though she's made it clear she's taken a different life path.

I thought I noticed one/some of the allies in the crowd when Isabelle and Quinn were driving up in the car. The guy who said they 'go in as one and leave as one' before the raid last week, was there in the crowd. Were they just waiting to get into the rally, or were they captured?

I need a better reason for Daryl to be called 'the enemy' by these people to warrant all of this. I hope he defeats that walker in glorious battle and becomes the crowd's favorite gladiator. They start chanting his name wiping that smug look off of Genet's face. I really can't with villains like her. Just so self-satisfied and smarmy.

I agree. There's actually so much else going on that I'm over that (I didn't care about him or his revenge to begin with, even a little bit), especially since the girl who actually killed his brother hasn't made another appearance.

I had the same question. It seems strongly implied that the walkers becoming burny and speedy is through human intervention after the fact. So what prompted them to start importing US walkers? And they obviously have criteria of the types of walkers that they want. But yeah, they got a lot of landmass on their side of the world with a lot of roaming bodies.

The only thing I can think of is freshness? That was one of the criteria they gave the hunters. Maybe they've experimented so much they are short on newly turned walkers and are smart enough to know that killing your own people to do your science experiments on is not a viable option if you want said population to follow your lead. And for whatever reason, going further into Europe or into Africa to get more freshies is more difficult or impossible than crossing a literal ocean?

Or maybe they had a hate for Americans so deeply passionate that it survived the apocalypse.

Daryl and Le'Carl look like an 80s rock duo with that hair   - Bow & Arrow.

Although I liked the back story, I felt cheated.

1. How. Did. Daryl. Get. On. The. Boat! He had a fight then he's on the boat. Liiiike why was La'Love Boat in Maine?

2. No one good is back. Carol said THEY and she sounded worried which is very unCarol. If it were a friend, I think she would have led the conversation like that. We do know there was a few Whisperers left. I'm pretty sure the only Saviour left is Negan and Gracie by association.

The last of them was pretty much extinguished by the Whisperers.  The one head that wasn't chopped was Aldene then he died too. And Leah was the only Reaper left.

The nun and her new beau were also there. Everyone kept a straight face and kept moving. Luckily Laurent wasn't in the car. He would have waved.

Well, they finally made me hate the idiot kid for cutting the boat loose. I was pretty much OK with him up until that point.

I'm glad we finally got around to how Daryl wound up in France but it doesn't make a lot of sense. We don't know why these people had to come all the way to the states to find walkers. They recruited people like Daryl to round up walkers in exchange for gas but then . . . kidnapped them and forced them to come to France? Why? I felt like I missed a scene between when the trucker guys killed the kid and the next scene when they were being herded onto the ship.

So Daryl managed to escape and make his way to shore in a lifeboat, and the fact that he managed to escape and the other kidnapped guys got chomped on by walkers is what made Genet hell-bent on finding and punishing him? Could she be more of a cartoon? All she needs is a mustache to twirl, or perhaps a broomstick. And don't get me started on tattoo face.

Honestly, it's not a bad show, it has potential, but it can't seem to break away from a tiresome formula of Good Guys versus Bad Bullies and the Bad Bullies are all poorly drawn cartoon characters that have no depth or nuance.

My take is she blames Daryl for all the men who were killed during his escape as well as the ship explosion which they didn't show how it happened. Daryl had something in his hand when he hit that walker and I thought he threw it and that's what caused the explosion but he dropped it so that theory went in the water with the boat.

Years ago, I saw one of those movies that was so bad it was good. Like Tubi is now. Anyway, one guy wanted revenge on another guy for killing his brother. So every time he caught up to him and they fought the guy would say "YOU KILLED MY BURTHAAA" but he pronounced "killed" as "killed da did." So for years me and my sisters would yell YOU KILLED DA DID MY BURTHAAA for no apparent reason other than thinking it was funny. So all that to say, whenever Le'Negan appears, in my head all I hear is "YOU KILLED DA DID MY BURTHAAA." I will see myself out.

There is the small island of the UK just off to the West there, where i'm sure the best, most polite and well behaved Walker stock would be residing 😂

It is strange as to why they're importing corpses from the US, especially considering that we've already seen various variants of the super Walker in previous episodes set in the US over several shows / seasons.

The athletic Walker seen on the ship embarked from the US, so is it purely an additive which can be administered at any time, or is the effectiveness dependent upon the corpses location of death?

Regarding who's come back, its obviously not someone important enough to be mentioned at the start of the conversation, Morgan and even Dwight have been mentioned.

It's going to be very interesting to see how Carol manages to find herself on one of those transatlantic voyages, as long as that cute bird from The love Boat is there ill be a happy bunny 🥰

Well, then, maybe don't kidnap people?

I mean jeez. Let us forget, for a moment, why the walker hunters were forced onto that boat in the first place. Maybe there are no good walker hunters in France.

But that's the risk you take when you kidnap someone, they might escape and they might hurt your people in the process. There's no shades of grey here, Genet and her gang of baddies are The Bad Guys.

It's the same with Tattoo Face. His brother was a roving Bad Guy who beat up and killed people. Someone dared to fight back and now his death must be avenged!

This is what I mean when I say these villains are cartoons. They are just the designated amoral, power hungry bullies. There is no investment in either of these characters (Genet or Tattoo Face). The show did a fairly good job fleshing out the characters of Isabel, Laurent and, to a lesser extent, even Quinn. But they put zero effort into making us give a shit about Genet or Tattoo Face. They're just 2-dimensional obstacles Daryl has to overcome.

So Daryl is in this whole thing because he punched a guy that killed a kid that Daryl pretty much had a single interaction with when he showed him how to chop wood?

Then we get stupid kid cutting the boat loose for “reasons”.  Laurent hasn’t had any issues with his bag until they hear a truck coming (which just happens to be the bad guys) and then he drops his shit all over the road?  They still have plenty of time to go and pick it up too but nope.  Let’s just leave it there.

Isabel gets a note from a “friend” while she is being held captive / plaything?  This friend of hers somehow has connections in Quinn’s organization?

Did Carol say “he came back” or was the transmission breaking up (conveniently when Carol was speaking the name)?  And, if it is Rick, why wouldn’t she lead with that?

I thought Carol said 'Rick' during the transmission which then conveniently cut out.  And, Laurent's actions seem pretty typical for someone who grew up as the most specialist special snowflake that was ever born.  See?  Life lesson: let children learn from mistakes and experiences.  Keeping Laurent 'safe guarded' really undermined his ability to understand consequences.

I thought Norman did some of his best acting during the scene in which he yelled at Laurent.

I found the whole kidnapping/ocean cruise plot confusing.  But, at least they tried to explain how Daryl got to the French Riviera.

Was not digging abusive Daryl, but Reedus knocked that out of the park.

I could have sworn Carol told Daryl to come back, not "he's back". A vague "he's back" makes sense for plot reasons and also Daryl could know who they were expecting while the rest of us get to sit here and talk about it.

I'm intrigued by super serum zombies. My guess (sheer guess, I don't read spoilers), based on the angle of the battle axe is that Daryl is able to decapitate super-zombie. The effects were really good but it reminded me too much of Captain America and the Hulk transformations. I suppose there is only so much you can do with super serum transformations...

I must say I do enjoy them moving away from "the white man bully" trope and showing women being the villian. World Beyond, Fear, Alpha and now this one.

I just hate how everyone stands around and let 1 person tell them what to do. I was watching the original recipe where Negan killed the doctor. Had to be 1000 people there and they couldn't find 100 not cowards to step up. I don't know why but of all the shit that has happened in this franchise, that is top 3 things that pissed me off the most. There was a part of me that didnt feel sorry for the workers at the Santuary because as our anti heroes would say "they had the numbers." They made the food and all other creature comforts so in my eyes they also had the power.

This episode restored my faith in the series as others have pointed out. It's hard to believe how close I was to giving up on Darryl.

Does anyone else miss the Talking Dead? It would really help me with these spin offs.

Very much miss The Talking Dead. It enhanced the viewing of the show for me. Sometimes the guests or Chris would have an insight or theory that I hadn't thought of so it was great for the different perspectives. Or just to laugh along with Yvette Nicole Brown and her piles of notebooks.

OOOH NOOO. Talking Dead became unbearable around season 8. When the episodes got bad or the spinoff was awful it was not a pleasant experience watching Chris be the cheerleader for the foolishness. I didn't care for the introduction of the fame whoring fandom nor the constant reading of fan tweets.

I do miss Yvette's insights, but the show ruined itself.

I've a couple different sound quality versions of the scene.  One of them sounded like Carol said "don't come back".  The conversation was awkward and stilted enough that I think it was spun for hype about returning characters but was really a warning from Carol to Daryl that something was wrong (enemies invaded) Alexandria and she couldn't exactly speak freely but decided to get him a warning that he shouldn't come back.  Carol knows he'll come back but that would tell him something is up.

Daryl definitely heard it as someone came back.

What I got out of it was that Daryl and the other guy broke the fuel line rules by fighting, so for punishment they got sent out on the Zombie boat.  The whole reason for the fuel line in the first place was apparently to hire people to gather zombies for the French experiments, so there's the connection.

I didn't expect to see or hear from Carol at all, so it was nice to have her on the phone.  My gut feeling is she was talking about Rick and Michonne coming back, but it could be someone else.

The kid didn't accomplish anything by cutting the boat line, they ended up heading toward the Nest anyway, it was just going to take them longer.  Then of course things got more messed up than that.

Do you suppose any of them knew the "punishment" for breaking the rules was being forced into indentured servitude and/or becoming zombie food? Because I don't think there would be a lot of takers for that.

I'm not convinced they would have been free to go on their merry way even if they hadn't "broken the rules."

I suppose the "lucky" ones might be forced into indentured servitude, but since they were so focused on delivering fresh zombies, I'm guessing most of them would be thrown into the cages.

Daryl spent a long time in the wilderness looking for rick, i suspect if it was rick who had returned then Carole would have mentioned it sooner in the conversation, my guess would be Morgan.

My guess here is that the  radio conversation sets things up for Carol to appear in a parallel story line in season two, which will presumably be made with the full number of episodes so will have more air time to fill. As i understand it Melissa McBride dropped out of the spin off because she didn't want to spend long periods filming in Europe. there's now the option of having her involved in A US based storyline where she tries to find out what has happened to Daryl.

She has an idea where Daryl was and what he was doing from their conversation, when he ails to show up after a week as promised, she may decide to go looking for him, she knows roughly where he was and what he was doing and she also has the resources of what is essentially a small state at her disposal.

I think the key here is the post credits scene from World Beyond where we see a scientist in a derelict French lab looking recordings of video calls made between the lab and Jenner at the CDC at the time of the outbreak, in the call the differing types of zombies are discussed. someone comes in and kills the scientist and takes the data. Presumably this guy was working for genet. this is how they know they need to go to the US for whatever it is they need from US zombies.

It also suggests some sort of tie in with the CRM. IIRC during the recorded convo with Jenner it's mentioned that some of the scientists who were working at the french lab were at a conference near the location of The Commonwealth at the time of the outbreak, so if they're alive they're stranded in the US within spitting distance of Carole.

I think the next season could be interesting if they get some decent writers on board to pull all these disperate threads together.

You and I and probably a lot of other people on this thread are hoping for this. I'd really like it all tied together somehow. I thought World Beyond would do some of that, but other than that scene, it was kind of a dud. Sometimes I feel they're stringing us along.

CAROL: (static)  Eugene.

DARYL:  You're shitting me.

CAROL:  Daryl ... I would never shit you.

DARYL:  How can that be?   We chained him to that tree beside the fire ant mound ... we stripped him naked and shellacked him with honey for chrissakes!

CAROL: Well, we should have gagged him, too.   Because he started talking and talking and all the fire ants killed themselves ...

(then just static)

Okay, so five episodes and already this series is better than any other Walking Dead show.

I finally realized why I hated TWD so much.   It was all the superfluous second and third-string characters whom I either hated or didn't give a hoot about.   The scripts were so overloaded that the show had little or no momentum.   In this show, there is one main character and a small band of regulars trying to fight their way from point A to point B.  There's no setting up house at the penitentiary, no building Commonwealths or Kingdoms, no Governors, no Survivors or Whisperers storylines that last for 38 seasons ... and no fucking Eugene.

Continuing my catchup. Were we even supposed to be paying attention to anything Genet said her in big Eva Peron moment? I know I wasn't in trying to follow the parallel stories of Daryl on the ship vs Daryl in the arena. Something something a new France. Or something.

I'm glad all the women have had time to keep up their coloring game in the French ZA.

Yet another kid in this franchise does something completely destructive or foolhardy but they hug it out in the end because the kid had big feelings. I thought too we were seeing shades of everything we've heard about Daryl's father over the years, and yeah, while I'll never think Reedus is a brilliant actor or leading man, he rises to competent enough when he's not relegated to mumbling and has decent material to work with.

My kid (who for perspective was a baby when the mother ship launched its first season and is now old enough to be watching with me) is fanwanking that Genet may be gathering up walkers from different countries for comparison testing and Daryl just managed to get caught up in it. It sounds as plausible as anything else and sort of supports his statement in the premier that he "went out looking for something and all I found was trouble." We can only speculate that Daryl making the ship go boom in his big escape wiped out a ton of research or resources or yeah, the nationwide manhunt for one escapee feels like a priorities thing, Le Grande Face Tattoo aside.

I thought Carol sounded strained like she was trying to get Daryl to read between the lines that everything isn't quiet and fine, and I thought Daryl sort of thought so too but the radio cut out before he could suss it out.
