When I was 5-6 years old in 1959, commercials for Disney's The Shaggy Dog movie on TV (in black and white) would send me shrieking in terror to bury my face in the over-stuffed velvet chair with my hands over my ears. The idea of a person morphing into a dog was uniquely terrifying for me. Anyone else? No?

Whatever you do, until the news cycle moves on do not go to New York Post ( or any of the other places in that publishing arc, Haprers Bazaar Town and Country etc) or you will freak. I know I did just from the headline and one photo. I mean it is seriously freaky as hell.

eta You may need to avoid many other places. Headlining in several other outlets now.

I've always enjoyed James Corden's humor (especially his car karaoke with Paul McCartney--he said all the things I'd have said if I were hanging out with Sir Paul 😁). I'll have to look up this YouTube bit with Adam Lambert. It's too bad in real life he's not as much fun.

That car karaoke with Sir Paul was classic.  Yeah, I've heard Corden can be a pain in his real life but then that also seems to be true of a fair number of other celebrities so I figure I need to pick my lines in the sand and go from there.

When I was a kid, I couldn't even bear to hear the intro music for The Twilight Zone, which my sister and Dad watched (but not Mom). I remember feeling jealous of their bonding time, but now that I recall Dad saying the show made the hair on the back of his neck stand up, I realize Dad was just like me in that respect (including having hair on the back of my neck, LOL). And I'm sure my sister no longer watches anything like that.

In more recent years I eventually watched all (I think?) of the Bones episodes by putting my hand in front of my face during the body discoveries and autopsies.
I can put up with a lot if there's comic relief, or romcom, or "socially redeeming" (IMO) content.

Does it still freak you out? This man paid $20,000.00 to turn himself into a collie.

I got a hamburger on Doordash from the local pizzeria.  I picked up a can of soda there and didn't pay for it. I didn't mean to do that at all, I remembered when I got back to my car I didn't put it on the tab.

Oh well, I rationalized that by I've given them enough business over the years.  Plus one time an eggplant parm sub I got there was so hot the cheese dripped through the bag and got on my car seat.  I didnt complain

@peacheslatour That is the freaky thing I was talking about! I couldn’t even open your link because it is just creepy. I can’t even read the article.

I once forgot to get a chapstick rung up. The next time I went to the store I got another, asked the cashier to ring it up and put it back explaining my previous mistake. She said wow you are honest. I told her I lost sleep over it.

I once did that with a Snapple, the clerk looked at me weird.

Hi all. Does anyone have a recommendation for a really protective (and hopefully reasonably priced) sleeve/case/cover/whatever you want to call it for a MacBook Pro (2020, 13-inch, if those things matter in anyway other than sizing). Now that I am working freelance, I feel like it's extra-crucial to protect it, as I am moving around the place more often with it (my official" day-to-day workspace is upstairs, but when I am using it just for my own stuff -- like what I am doing right now, for instance -- I am likely downstairs). I am hoping for protection from not just dirt and scratches, but also a drop (gods forbid!).

I realize that nothing is perfect and that my laptop is not likely to escape completely unscathed from a drop, but I like to know I've at least preemptively done what I can!

Unrelated: I feel oddly guilty for popping in here only periodically to pick your brains! But sometimes I forget about Chit-Chat and, when I remember, there is so much to catch up on that it feels daunting!

OtterBox is known for being pretty indestructible.

I love my chromebook also @peacheslatour. I don’t love it as much as I did my first Dell mini laptop! That was the best one I have ever had. Sadly it was completely ruined when a tornado struck my house. It felt great and the keyboard felt great. I have had two chromebooks since and they are cool, really cool and cheap but nothing will ever beat the Dell from gosh almost 20 years ago when the hubs tossed it to me and said happy birthday while he was unpacking the desktop one.

@TattleTeenyI was going to suggest Otterbox but after checking the site I don’t think they offer MacBook cases. My whole crowd loves Otterbox. They have fantastic warranty service. I have the above for my phone (clear sparkle one so my light purple phone color shows through). It has saved it from about 30 flat out drops to the floor, parking lots, sidewalks, you name the surface I have dropped my phone on it. Not nary a scratch or crack ever. If you are interested in them for other items besides your MacBook pm me and I can give you the great warranty experiences I have had.

NYC people might remember the preppy killer Robert Chambers. Well he is out of prison once again.

I was just talking about this.  It's in the Daily News today.  I had forgotten that he served a second 15 year sentence for drug dealing after his fifteen year murder sentence.  What will he do next?

We used to live in an apartment building kind of like the one Jimmy Stewart did. I will always have a soft spot for that movie. And my son and I used to watch Psycho together every Mothers Day. I love Hitchcock movies.

We have an air shaft view from our NYC kitchen.  Never see any scary goings on across the way, however.

Speaking of scary movies, it's the 50th anniversary of The Exorcist.  Bring on the pea soup!

Apparently, they have a sequel coming out soon. We went to see Oppenheimer last night, and they had a trailer for it. Several of us questioned the appropriateness of what they showed as a trailer. I certainly won't be going to see the new movie.

That new Exorcist looks pretty good, based on the trailer.

Thank you, but it’s just the laptop I need it for. I wonder why no Mac stuff — seems like it would be a good plan, considering the Macbooks’ waiflike qualities! I wonder if there’s a Mac equivalent of Otterbox.

I think that is what @shapeshifter is sharing with you above with the apple link. Not sure it’s equivalent (seriously, Otterbox is fantastic!).

I’m not sure which specific devices they include, but besides Otterbox, another brand to check out is Lifeproof.

I was a very paranoid smartphone adopter, and I swore by my Lifeproof cases. My latest iPhone claimed to be waterproof or at least water resistant, so I went with a less bulky (and much less expensive) alternative. So of course it took a fall about 18 inches onto a carpeted floor, and somehow cracked the Touch ID button. Oh well.

But now that I look on the google, it looks like both Otterbox and Lifeproof are the same company. Not sure if that was always the case or a more recent merger/acquisition.

He got more time for selling drugs than murder.

I think he spent 30 or so years in prison so far.

Yes he did fifteen for the murder, was out for four years and then did fifteen for drugs. So more than half his life in prison.

Maybe he will graduate to organized shoplifting. That’s the newest thing in NYC.

Robert Chambers met his admirer/girlfriend while waiting for his murder trial. They are apparently still together. He was selling drugs while living with her. She wasn’t convicted of selling drugs. But I think she was selling drugs with him. What kind of a woman stays with a murderer for 35! years (on/off)? Wow. She needs her head examined.

There are more women like this out there than you'd expect.  I think I heard a theory that for some women its easier to date men in jail because they have more control over the relationship and don't have to deal with him irl, but its not for me though.

I have never seen Golden Girls.

Aw, give it a try.  It's on 8 times a day on Hallmark.  It's very well written and acted.  And yes, the Betty White character is annoyingly ditsy, but I accept it within the parameters of the show.  It indicates what a fine actress/comedian she was, as it was so different from her sly Sue Ann Nivens.  And the other characters give her sh*t for it.

I might not have watched Golden Girls until after Betty White died.
I prefer her character in Hot In Cleveland.

When my 45-year old daughter visited recently, she said she had recently gotten into the habit of watching Golden Girls (we didn’t get a TV until after GG was canceled) to go to sleep (daughter does “shift work” meaning she has to sleep days and work nights half the time).
So we watched an episode of Designing Women, and she thought it might work too, but she also said DW wasn’t as funny as GG
I should probably tell her about Hot In Cleveland too.

Are there any others like GG, DW, HIC?

I can't imagine not having a TV until the 90s.  Your daughter is a year or two older than me.  Didn't she miss watching 90210 like her friends at school?

She has never mentioned it. I should ask her.

Her next youngest sister is 40 and, as an adult, has frequently told me that she used to fake knowing what other kids were talking about and wished she knew, but in college and later she was glad to have instead spent time reading, dancing, spending time outside, etc., and that her adult friends think it's "so cool" that she grew up without TV. She says most kids didn't have paints, and we always did, even though we were of a lower income.

My youngest (35) was about 9 when we got a tiny TV, and about 11 when we started watching it semi-regularly. In high school she used to record Gilmore Girls and secretly share them with a friend whose parents thought it was inappropriate.

None of them watch much TV as adults. I gave it up as a teen because it took too much time, and didn't start again for 30 years. Now (obviously) I'm addicted again.

@shapeshifter I had an aunt who was an artist, so she always gave me art supplies.  So I had TV and paint.  lucky me.

You are making up for lost time in the TV watching department LOL.

I too liked Hot in Cleveland and Designing Women.  I have to think what might be similar.  I can always put on a Cheers or Frasier episode and I'm never disappointed.

Wendy Malick from HIC was in that show about the magazine business.  With David Spade and George Segal.  Just Shoot Me.  That was kind of a fun show.  That's where I first became familiar with Wendy Malick.
