Just finished watching this and am still processing but was very disappointed to read at the end that there is no federal law regarding stealing these types of images and posting them online.

I am watching this now and just...what is up with Hunter Moore's girlfriend? He is purely evil and was she with him this entire time?  Here's an interview with the journalist talking about Hunter drinking vodka from women's hoo-ha's and women doing lines of coke off his junk and here's his gf just....slow blinking and talking about his brand.

She seemed completely strung out during the whole series. I found it interesting that she had no clue what was going on there and no idea that there are "hidden" FB messages. Okay. Sounds like she loved the attention of being with someone worshipped by so many. 

I know it's a tender subject and I feel for all of these women, but the affect of a lot of them just seems kind of eerie to me.

I think being detached was the only way they could talk about what happened to them without curling up in the fetal position and sobbing uncontrollably.  

He got these women when they were young and vulnerable.   His girlfriend was 18.   he seemed so cool and sophisticated.   Then he manipulated her like he manipulates everyone else.   Destiny was only 19 and clearly not making good choices.

Okay I have a little less sympathy for Destiny.   I mean she was DOING PORN.   Then when she lost her kids over it her idea is "do more porn so I can make money for a lawyer to get my kids back."   Umm, you aren't getting your kids back while you still keep making bad decisions.   I mean her reasoning was really off.   "Oh I only did what I did to get my kids' picture off the site, see I'm a good Mom."  the fact the kids' pictures were up there was not why you lost your kids.   The fact you were willing to provide CONTENT to get your kids off probably went to your judgment more than a bit.   Same with why she is mad at Hunter.   He never gave me any money like he promised.   No shit dearie.    Someone who posts all your personal information on the internet and then coerces you into doing sex acts isn't going to actually HELP YOU.  She didn't deserve what she got, but she was a willing participant if it got her money and attention.

But Hunter is not a "badass."   He's an asshole.   But he wasn't an asshole alone.   The guy who was looking at the site regularly, then got upset when he wound up on the site.   Hey guess what, those folks you were looking at?   Yeah they didn't volunteer to be there either.   I'm REALLY side eyeing the advertisers.   Why didn't they say "yeah no, we don't want to be associated with humiliating people who didn't consent to this."   Same with everyone who interveiwed the guy like he was the next Steve Jobs.   Maybe if they had ignored him, he might have gone away (or you know starting a fake medical company for attention and billions of dollars).   But no, they interviewed him and NOT ONE said "Dude, you are a terrible person, this site is terrible and it should not exist."   His lawyer, was JUST FINE with the site even after being told about copyrights -- until another lawyer told him that a lawsuit was coming.    Why didn't his lawyer say "you know, Section 230 might protect you, it might not, let's not do this."    Nope he was all fine until another lawyer said "yeah this will not go well" then he noped out of there.

I didn't understand her situation at all. Something's clearly going on with her. She's lost a frightening amount of weight since she was with him and seems to be on some kind of substance. I definitely don't blame her for what he was doing but her claiming she didn't know when it was all so incredibly public...c'mon, girl.

Oh, I agree!  She seemed high or strung out or SOMETHING.  Was she like that when she was dating him? Did she appear like that as a way to excuse her non-action? 

I do want to say, that mom? She's AMAZING! The way she went to bat for her daughter and the other victims? The way she fought him when no one would even take her seriously. Amazing . And the British stepdad? I loved him. When he finally understood what was going on and called the lawyer and the lawyer was like: and I immediately started separating myself from that guy. What did he say to that lawyer? I don't believe that dad was the first lawyer to call if this dillhole had his own personal lawyer. Oh and speaking of dillholes, Butthole Girl? I have no words about her. I hope she gets to see her kids again.

And things changed for her only after Anonymous targeted him and the feds were after him. So suddenly she wasn't the official girlfriend of the guy "everyone" wants to be or be with any longer.  Instead, she was the girlfriend of someone who became a pariah. 

She was young.  And probably manipulated.  But it's not like he was that much older than she was.  He was only 24 when he started the site and I think his downfall came at 26. 

And I agree about the lawyer.  I didn't like that his enablers or people who looked the other way got the same "victim" type focus as his actual victims.

Not only was Hunter reprehensible—which, he's one of many demons in skin suits walking around Earth—his followers were completely vile, too. Who shits through a sunroof? I don't know why I'm surprised when I saw how half of the population has behaved throughout the pandemic, but I guess I hold out some hope that people have some shred of decency. She knew what he was doing but in her words she “thought he wasn’t doing anything wrong.” She was young, dumb and naive and drank the BS kool-aid he was dishing out that it was the fault of the victims for taking nude pictures of themselves and sending them to “hundreds of guys” not understanding it would inevitably end up on the internet. And it was the fault of the people posting the pictures. It wasn’t his fault. He was only innocently hosting the website where they could post the pictures. I think she believed that nonsense hook line and sinker, enjoyed the party lifestyle and dating a semi- celebrity, until sh*t got real, the professional hackers hacked him, destroying his life, he became fearful of going to prison, and she supposedly discovered the private messages she received from his victims begging her to help them get the pictures Hunter had posted removed from the site. 

She even said she wished she knew better back then. I do agree with others she is obviously on drugs whether it is for health issues or she has substance abuse issues are unknown of course. She is scary thin and has lost a significantly amount of weight since they were together.

I concluded that all of his followers “the family” and the folks doing outrageous, disgusting and depraved things to get attention from him and the site have/had serious emotional issues. No one who is emotionally stable would go so far as to stick cell phones up their ass or threaten to kill and rape women because their idol was being “threatened” by them are stable people. 
 

Hunter was/is a vile and disgusting POS. I know it was the law that he got the time he got but I wish they could’ve at least given him 5 years. He truly is sociopath. I mean he did not care that people’s lives were being destroyed. And the irony of it was when the tables were turned on him he became even more vicious and entitled having an attitude of “how dare someone try to destroy me!” Even though he’d been doing just that to others. Unbelievable. Glad he’s disappeared into nothingness. Hopefully he’s currently living a muted and unsuccessful existence.

Charlotte Laws was also briefly a Private INvestigator, that's how she knew how to track this guy down and gather all the evidence.   Go read her Wikipedia page.    She has done a LOT.    The show portrays her as an upper class suburban mom who was just protecting her daughter.   At the time the events happened she had just left or was about to be termed out of her position on the City Council.   This was not just another soccer mom.

Hunter Moore's girlfriend was abused.   That's why she is in shock still.    At one point in episode two she says "Don't make Hunter mad, he will just come after you worse."   This wasn't abstract talking, this was speaking from personal experience.   She didn't WANT to know what was going on because if she objected it might have made things more dangerous for her.   All speculatino of course, but I've done enough DV cases that that line stuck out at me.   And I know how DV victims tend to act to protect themselves.   

Hunter Moore is like all bullies.   Tough guy until someone bullies back.   All his talk of doing bad things and his EdgeLord "I Don't Give a Fuck" attitude just crumbled when he was told he could go to jail for this stuff.   Ruining people's lives is FUN until its yours RIGHT Hunter?   Oh man when he said on Anderson Cooper "Your daughter probably sent that picture to millions of men" right to Charlotte's face, he had known idea what was coming.   And he knew damn well those pics were hacked.

Well his hacker was an amateur at best. As I understand email and certain basic websites such as blogs and such are pretty easy to hack for someone who has basic hacking skills.  Apparently Anonymous are expert hackers being that they’ve managed to hack numerous corporate and government websites. So Hunter’s hacker wasn’t even playing in the same league as Anonymous.

I did a little research on where Hunter is now. It doesn't appear that he's up to much, but he somehow has a new Twitter account that seems to be devoted to shitposting about women (big surprise) and bragging about how much money he's making in crypto. So much for the "social media ban."

Strangely, I'd never heard of him before the Netflix doc, which is probably a good thing.

I can’t believe I never heard about this guy. How can his parents justify having a piece of crap like this as a son. I was a little in awe of anonymous and what they were able to do. Some parts of this weren’t explained well-how did the marine anti bullying guy get access to Hunters files just by being an advertiser? Charlotte did a lot of good here but she isn’t exactly innocent herself with her history of scamming ways to get close to celebrities. Not that anything she did compared to Hunter but people could use her methods for harm as well.

I feel so bad for these women and also the people who thought the website was fun-they clearly have mental issues themselves. Also glad I grew up in a time where we didn’t take naked pictures of ourselves.

Agreed - the tech stuff in that segment wasn't well explained. Also agree about the naked pics thing. I've never done it, and even though I'm married now, I still wouldn't. Even without malicious intent, you never know where the pics could end up.

Also, I got the impression that many women had no idea their pictures were on the site, even if they did take them for a boyfriend and was sent to him, for his eyes only, until either a friend informed them or they started receiving numerous calls and texts from strangers about their pictures.

The Marine said he owned and managed several websites. So I don’t think all the work he did was in anti-bullying. Hunter no doubt engaged this guy to advertise on his site due to one of  this guy’s websites which had nothing to do with bullying, without knowing about all of his other business ventures which included the anti-bullying stuff. Regarding the content in the site, I’m thinking this guy advertised on the site but became friends with Hunter and offered to help him “improve” the sites security etc. Hunter allowed him access because he was a cybersecurity guy and that’s how he was able to access the content. He could’ve even hacked the site to prove a point to Hunter and gain his trust. Remember Hunter didn’t care about hacking considering he shrugged off his friend hacking him and how he used this in his business. So the Marine could’ve hacked his website to prove a point and that’s how he got an in to the servers and was able to see the content.

Hunter isn't all that smart.  The marine guy targeted him with the intent to manipulate him.  So it sounds like they developed a back-and-forth "friendship."  He told Hunter that the age verification method he was using wasn't a good one and he had a better way of doing it.  That's how he got access to many pictures. 

And then he convinced Hunter he had underage people on his site which is how he convinced Hunter that he needed to sell to get the liability off his hands. I don't think he actually found underage photos.  He just wanted to scare Hunter to want to leave the site.

I only watched the first episode and wow is this guy a piece of work.  I really don't understand how he had a following among women. Incels I can get but a lot of women who were blurred out at his parties seemed to enjoy all of this.  I was young and dumb once but even back then I would find this all disgusting.  

Butt hole girl?  That girl was one bad decision after another.  Two kids from two different fathers by the time she was 18, doing butt stuff for Hunter over chat, doing more porn to try to get her kids back. Wasn't she the one who initially posted her own photos on the site knowing that he links them all to socials trying to drum up some business for her web cam site?  WHY would you do that if your kids are on your Facebook page?   Sigh.  It is a living but most girls even back then had 'alter egos' and never linked to their real socials.  It is dangerous.  She was taken advantage of but poor girl needs some stable influences in her life.

I found that funny as well. I guess the parties and website didn’t pay as much as he led people to believe. The little money he did make went up his nose.

Then don't look up Chris-Chan.  Or Lowtax.  Or The Spoony One.  There's all sorts of sordid stuff on Youtube about them and they will make this documentary pale in comparison.  There would be not enough showers on Earth to make filthy feelings go away.  I'm dead serious.

I laughed so hard I disturbed my cat at the end, when they said Hunter Moore changed his mind about appearing in the documentary -- "We chose to use his image anyway."  Fantastic!

Moore is so utterly disgusting on every level, I am appalled he didn't just have a cult following of nutballs, he drew huge crowds of casual fans.  This is why I hate people.

I love the guy who bought the site saying he doesn't condone all the illegal actions Anonymous took against Moore, but he enjoyed the shit out of it.  Same, dude.  They had him declared dead! 

And what a typical loser this guy is, on about how he's rolling in it thanks to the site's success, but in actuality he's living with his parents and sold the whole thing for not even $12k.

Stealing them (hacking) has always been illegal -- that's why he and his accomplice went to jail.  What there's no federal prohibition against is distributing intimate images taken by you or given to you for your own private use to others without the subject's consent.  So, the dudes posting these type of pictures that they'd taken of/had been sent to them by their girlfriend to get back at her after she dumps their ass (what "revenge porn" refers to) are not violating federal law, but now in most states they are violating state law.  For example, in CA, "anyone who intentionally distributes an image of the intimate body part or depicting them in sexual intercourse, oral copulation, sodomy, sexual penetration, or masturbation, under circumstances in which they understand that the image shall remain private, the person distributing the image knows or should know distribution of the image will cause serious emotional distress, and the person depicted suffers that distress" is guilty of a misdemeanor offense.
