I'm from Wisconsin, so I knew this. No one did a good Wisconsin—excuse me, Wizgahnsun—accent. Moffat had the vowels all wrong, Aidy's was too weak, and Dafoe's was more Canadian.

That was Mikey Day as the Wisconsonian [Wisconsinite?] with Aidy. I know many people say they can't tell the difference between Alex Moffat and Mikey Day but I just can't see it -- especially naming the wrong one with confidence rather than hedging knowing you can't be sure. (Sometimes when Kyle has a wig I don't recognize him right away, and sometimes it takes me a minute to be sure whether it is Sarah or Melissa, but Mikey and Alex seem very distinct to me.)

ETA:  I was under the vague impression that Willem Defoe was in fact Dutch.  Obviously I had confused myself misremembering how his name  transformed from William to Willem.

Cold Open: And we open with Biden! Oh no, Russia is memeing us to death. ACTUAL memes, too! And not just cringey made up memes the writers created. The American ones were appropriately lame and cringey. Had to get the topical Tom Brady joke out of the way, too.

I had forgotten the story about Putin stealing some guy's Super Bowl ring, and judging by the audience's lack of reaction so had everyone else.

Yeah, I probably should have been paying closer attention. That never occurred to me, but it makes sense.

The mushroom dancers' fans said "EAT ME"; that was the biggest clue.

Aidy's lip color as the fashion influencer was tremendous.

I was really impressed at how she pulled off that whole look.

I think Peyton Manning just stole the episode from Willem Dafoe.

Agreed. PM was my favorite part of the show. "Sacre bleu, man." I'm always happily surprised by how funny he is.

But for the most part, I didn't enjoy the show or Willem Dafoe. There were several times when his delivery just wasn't that great.

Maybe I was just not in a receptive mood. I didn't care for the Cold Open, except for some reason Pete as Aaron Rodgers and Chris as the guy from State Farm really cracked me up.

Usually I like the sketches with townspeople and such complaining at microphones, but the only part I particularly laughed at here was Chris as not-Jamarcus. Oh, and I also kinda liked Kenan.

I did like Now I'm Up, though it wasn't the best music video they've done.

I had no idea that boner commercial sketch was based on a real one.

In WU I enjoyed Aidy and Bowen as the Trend Forecasters. I was kinda mesmerized by their hair and makeup. I also liked the bit about McDonald's new sandwich Land, Air, and Sea. Good question about McDonald's implying that the chicken was the "air" part.

The Beauty and the Beast sketch did nothing for me.

I was really disappointed in the Please Don't Destroy video. I've always liked them, but not this one.

Good Morning Columbus was another one that bored me.

For some reason I was highly amused by Willem's character throwing the chair out the window.

And speaking of mesmerized, that's how I felt about those mushroom costumes and the choreography.

I feel like a curmudgeon. I just didn't find much of this funny.

The high point for me was WU when Peyton Manning was introduced and it turned out to be the real Peyton and not a cast member impersonator. I've never seen EIP but that didn't matter, the point was Peyton was watching some romcom chick series instead of football. Then midway through, he's wearing a beret. Then his last statement was "Go Bills! They're still in it, right?" Just hilarious, and that made his entire appearance more brilliant.

I agree 100% with all of this. I actually said out loud “Oh my God it’s really him!” The idea of him watching a show like that instead of football playoffs was ludicrous - that’s what made it funny. And then the diagrams … and the beret! I’m from Buffalo and I thought that ending was hilarious. Laughing through my tears … lol. The local news stations are having a field day with this!

Other than that, I did not think this was a great episode. Too many penis jokes for me. I didn’t know the boner thing was based on a real commercial - that might have made it funnier to me. But then the “Blowing Yourself” bit?  A lame joke that went on wayyy too long. The bad dog show sketch was cute, especially the first dog that was afraid of everything.  The setup for Trend Setters was great. I loved the outfits! But it wasn’t as funny as I thought it would be.

  • DaFoe was good in most things and seemed up for it.
  • Now I'm Up was funny.
  • Peyton Manning was unexpected, overlong, and pointless (credit for the effort though)
  • I hate it when talented singers feel the need to sing over their own tracks in order to sound better.  It's lazy and disingenuous.
  • Didn't know if the Columbus sketch was because of something recent or if they just picked a large midwestern city.

I couldn't take my eyes off the backup mushroom dancers in Katy's first number

I spent the whole time looking for armpit hair the backup dancers kept flashing.

Not that my opinion matters but I agree this episode was full of too many penis and sex jokes. I don't find them funny the same way I don't like comedians whose routines are all about pooping in a public restroom. Those jokes and sketches don't take any talent to write. Which is why I liked Peyton Manning's appearance all the more, that at least was clever writing. Willem was wasted on junk sketches IMO. He deserved better.

The cast seemed very excited during that goodbye clip. Not sure how much was for Willem and how much was that they are getting a month break. It's rare that they bounce up and down like that.  I think they really liked having him host.

It's interesting. I've heard that as well that he never wants to host again. I don't understand the reasoning for that, especially as it's fairly obvious that he has the esteemed  Friend of the Show status. That's been clear since the last Anniversary Show.  It shows that everyone there loves him. (And not just for football reasons.)

I really do think this episode was one of the best of the season so far.

I AM NOT Peyton Manning So I Don 't Really Know Why He Does NOT Want To Host Again, BUT, I Think He Did Such A Great Show When He Did Host That There Is NOTHING Left For Him To Do ! He Introduced His Family In The Monologue And I LOVED When He Told Mom We're Sending You You To The Canadian Foot Ball League ! He Had Such A Great Sketch With Will Forte In The Locker Room !

Yeah, I'm with you, and have been for probably fifteen years! Whenever they go in for that, I get really queasy thinking about all the teens, tweens (and younger!) who are staying up late and watching. (Or staying up not so late and streaming.) I know I'm just an old prude and the kids today probably know everything already and have seen/heard much worse--but the show isn't helping.

Penis and sex jokes are lazy.

I tend to see it as lazy too, yes, and fear of tackling more diverse subjects (the show used to have more slice-of-life material and dramatic material until the early '90s). I was watching an episode from 1998, Matthew Broderick, last night, and did a double take at just how much was focused on sex - The Ladies Man opened the show, a fake commercial on Viagra, Molly Shannon on The View talking about her breasts and what she wanted to do with a male guest; a prom limo sketch with Cheri Oteri and Broderick singing about how he forced her to have sex with him; Cheri and Chris Kattan as the couple who were always extremely sexual and then got upset when a male host finally joined in; and special guests Tenacious D, who sang about how they wanted to take off a woman's clothes and have sex with her at the same time.

Of course in 1998 this might have genuinely been more shocking or thrilling to people, whereas now you see it (and much more) everywhere, but I think it shows the consequences of SNL moving away from a wider variety of pieces. I always hope - in vain - they will go back there someday.

A cut sketch from the episode:

I Do NOT Know Where To Put This, But, I Just Found Out That Tonight's Saturday Night Live June 11 Show Is William Defoe And Katy Perry ! For Any Body That Does NOT Know, This Show IS A Repeat From This Season ! This Will Be On AT Ten Thirty Central After The Ten PM Local News On NBC !

I keep thinking I don't want to like Peyton Manning, but he makes it difficult.  Especially when he's on this show.  That was hilarious.

He also makes Colin look so tiny.

Why Did You Not Want To Like Peyton Manning ? Do You Not Like Foot Ball OR Did You Not Think Peyton Manning Was Funny When He Hosted Saturday Night Live ? Did You Not Like When He Hosted Where He Was In The Locker Room And Will Forte Was The Foot Ball Coach ?

The audience is absolutely roaring like this is the funniest thing on Earth, but.... Emily in Paris sucks.  I wish they picked another show.  I know Peyton's classic SNL sketch well but this just... meh.

I loved the first song by Katy Perry "When I'm Gone".  I keep singing it in the kitchen.  LOL

I Think That Is Why They Picked That Show Is IF They Picked A Good Show, There Would Not Be Any Thing Funny About That ! Also, Peyton Was Using Foot Ball Terminology And They Had Diagrams Like A Foot Ball Coach Used To Describe How To Move The Foot Ball Down The Field ! ! They Were Comparing Romance Shows AND Foot Ball ! !

I thought that was the whole idea - that Emily in Paris sucks.

Unless I'm missing your meaning (which would not be unusual for me).

I Said The Same Thing As You ! I Think Miss Blue Jay Thought That He Had Actually LOVED That Show ! I Told Miss Blue Jay That It Would NOT Be Funny IF He Had Talked About A Good Show !

No, I understood the joke just fine.  I just think that EiP is already so ubiquitous in the media that using that show made me roll my eyes.  It would be nice to give another show promotion.  Even if it's Peyton making fun of the show, any promo is good promo.  Especially for TV shows that are always in danger of being cancelled.

Netflix has been so ubiquitous for so long that there are people who only speak Netflix.  You try to talk to somebody about a show and they say if it's not on Netflix, I won't watch it.  They will watch anything on Netflix, no matter how shitty.  Hence, EiP being shitty yet everyone knowing about it.

Shows are being rewarded not for being high quality, but for being accessible.  And it annoys me.  SNL is re-rewarding this show that everyone already knows about.  And I know, someone will respond with "That's the joke."   I can understand a joke and still not like the choice being made.

I was sorta disappointed Katy didn't do a ten-minute song about one of her exes like Taylor did. 😏

I liked Connor. Let's drink some Hennessy!

This episode was a real letdown to me after last week's.

I AM SO Glad That Katy Did NOT Sing TEN Minutes Like Taylor Swift Did ! People Complained That They Did NOT Like That Karaoke AT The Bar With Will Forte And Heidi I Think Was Who WAs In Charge Of the Karaoke ! I Thought There Were Too Many Magruber Sketches !

Okay, But, I Think They Would Promote A Good Show In The Monologue Maybe And NOT Do IT On Week End Update Like This Was ! Also, I Have Never Heard OF Emily In Paris And I Do NOT Watch Shows On Netflix ! !

Ditto.

As for the rest of the episode, pretty mixed bag IMO with more misses than hits. Did like the influencers, and Ivanka as the sister of failure was one of the best one liners ever.

What Were Some OF The Missus Because I Thought Maybe Most People Thought There Were More Hits Than Missus ? ?
