Speculation for Season Two: The Mandalorian

  • Start Topic

Recommended Posts

Well, I’m definitely hoping for more Mandalorian Lore. Have all the families fallen? Which family rescued Mando? I hope Filioni still will be apart of the show Season two-he had loads of Mandalorian Lore in Rebels. Bring it up show. Let’s hear about the fall out.

And then I’m hoping for actual names For characters (its the little things). Does Mando have a first name? If The Child is still around, will he be given a name? With his race be given a name?

And lastly, I want to see an overarching story. I’m not a huge fan of the stand-alones no connection to anything else. I know the Empire is gone, but First Order should be starting to build.

Without seeing this current season's finale until next week, I can't fully speculate yet.  Some things I think that might happen could actually happen in this last episode instead of next season.  After I see the season finale I'll have a better idea of what I think could happen.

But I can safely say that I think that some of the characters we met in this current season were not thrown in just for the purpose of standalone episodes.  I think that anyone who was significant to one of this season's earlier episodes (and anyone who wasn't clearly killed) has a good chance of returning to play a more important role, whether it's in this season's finale or in Season 2.

I think the earlier episodes of this season that seemed detached and not really connected to anything were meant to introduce us to characters we will see again.

Although several jail breaks have already occured, for some ridiculous reason, Moff Gus will keep Mando alive and the Droid will spend time assembling a Mandalorian assault team to break him out....

In watching various reactions to this series on YouTube over the last few days, I'm surprised by how many people don't seem to be aware that there is a Season 2.  Several people seem to think that the series is ending with Episode 8, premiering tomorrow.  I guess they just didn't know that Season 2 has already been in the works for a while.  I think Jon Favreau said that they started working on Season 2 almost right after Season 1 wrapped up.  They've even been filming this month.

This makes me wonder if some of the disappointed fan reaction I've been seeing to certain episodes is because a lot of people thought that the series was only going to last one season and they expected certain loose ends to be tied up within these 8 episodes.  Maybe they expected a different structure for the whole story because they thought this was the only season?

In any case, after tomorrow's Season 1 finale, we'll all have a better idea of what we may or may not see in Season 2!

Chnaged wording for clarification, as I realize that the word "filming" might not have been used in the interview I saw!

I haven't heard anything about that. From what I've read, season 1 started production in October of 2018 and filming was done in February, then season 2 started in October. So they had a pretty big gap between filming the seasons. I'm sure they needed the extra time for the special effects. In September, Favreau said:

“We’re working on season 2, writing, prepping with the directors and getting ready to direct myself, actually,” said the Iron Man and Jungle Book director. “I didn’t get a chance the last time around because I was doing Lion King. So I’ll step in for one of them.”

I'm guessing the timeline for season 2 will be the same as 1. Having to wait a year for new episodes is going to be tough!

Oh you know, I was just watching an interview with either Jon Favreau or Dave Filoni (probably Jon) a few days ago, and the comment was made about how Season 2 was being [worked on] almost as soon as they were finished with Season 1.  (I am paraphrasing until I find the specific interview I watched.)  I specifically remember thinking it was an interesting detail to learn, BUT if he didn't say "filming," then I think I assumed he meant filming, when he actually probably just meant writing and planning and all of that.

And that would make sense that filming didn't start until a couple of months ago, because there have been recent (Nov-Dec) reports of filming out here in SoCal, and a Pedro Pascal sighting in town last week (since he is on the set at times, even if he is not always in the suit).

Anyway, it's neither here nor there.  We still have to probably wait at least another 11 months to see Season 2!

Mando goes off and finds the nursery planet of the Yodians. Since there are no adults on the planet, Mando has to adopt them all into the Mandalorian clan. There are about 100 and they range from teen Yodas to baby Yodas. They all wear little tiny Buskar Steel suits and you never see their faces again.

I am curious to see who Mando and Baby Yoda encounter as he searches the galaxy for BY's kin. I'm guessing season 2 will be structured similarly to season 1, with a mission of the week - the slight difference being that they'll pick up clues to BY's origins along the way.

I'm guessing season 2 will be Mando and the baby on the run from Moff Gideon, and anyone else looking for them, while Mando searches for the Yoda species. Maybe he'll go to the core to try to learn more about the Force. I was thinking that if the Mando-child story is completed in season 2, would they make season 3 about another Mandalorian? Would fans lose interest in Din if he doesn't have baby Yoda with him? I also still believe that the mystery character at the end of episode 5 was Boba Fett, so I'm wondering when he will show up again. Season 3 could be about him, although apparently he's not technically a Mandalorian. I'm not saying that's what I want to happen, I'm just speculating. 🙂

I'm fine without the kid. The kid is interesting, but not the be-all and end-all of why I watch the show.

I am not sure they would be in a big hurry to find the child's people.  Why get rid of a big draw for the show?   Also, wasn't  George Lucas famously unwilling to reveal much about Yoda's origins?  He wanted to keep much about Yoda mysterious. I think they should keep some things about the baby mysterious too.

What I think is exciting is that now that everyone has seen this, Favreau will have really talented people from far and wide reaching out to him wanting to be involved. And while that influx of talent might not impact plans for season 2 dramatically, it should ensure a long run of high quality going forward (if Favreau himself continues to run the show the way he did with season one.)

I think that Season 2 is set up for Din/Mando and Baby Yoda to bond more as father and son, as they search for Baby's home and escape the clutches of assorted bad people and aliens.  They're probably not going to find the baby's home right away, and they will have to make stops here and there, where other adventures will present themselves.   Din/Mando is not going to just leave the baby with any random "enemy sorcerer"/Jedi (if he can find one) or with any random small, green creature unless he feels he is safe.

Din/Mando is Baby's father now, so there will probably be lots of fun moments between them in the second season.  I mean, we all knew that Din/Mando fell in love with the Baby as soon as he saw him at the end of Chapter 1, but he was trying to stay detached until he made the decision to save the Baby in Chapter 3.  Even after that, though, he was still leaving the Baby behind as he left the ship.  It was as if he wanted to protect the Baby but wasn't fully ready to be an involved daddy yet.

Now... they are a clan of 2.  They are family.  Din/Mando has a son.  They will protect each other.  So I think the show is going to play into that dynamic for a bit before Baby's home and 'people' are found.

And, personally, I am here for it!!!  I'm all in.  Not only do I love Baby Yoda, but I love that he is melting Mando's heart, which is buried underneath all of that armor.  He is giving Mando something to care about and be invested in other than just being a cold bounty hunter.  Maybe this will eventually get Mando to realize that he wants to settle down and have a family, and he will go back to Sorgan to reconnect with Omera.

Baby Yoda is undeniably a huge draw for this show.  The unofficial Baby Yoda account on Twitter (there is an article in Esquire about it) has more than 211,000 followers, and that following grew very quickly.  People love the Baby.  Maybe no one knew that Baby Yoda was going to be on the show before it began because he was kept a secret -- and that might have led to some preconceived ideas of how the series would play out, and some subsequent disappointment when it was not what was expected -- but now that everyone knows about Baby, he is a big hit.  He's not an inconsequential side character that no one is invested in.  He has stolen the hearts of men and women of all ages, all colors, all backgrounds, everywhere.  There are people who will want to tune in to the series just for Baby Yoda.

If the series is intended to be limited and only run for 2 seasons, then I think Baby Yoda will be around for the duration.  if the series is intended to last for as long as it can go, I'm not sure if it would or could just go back to Din/Mando being a bounty hunter after he no longer has the Baby in his life.  I kind of get the feeling that one of the big points of this show is that Mando/Din has found something to love and protect, and that the sweet little creature is changing Mando.

I definitely think we will see Peli again.  I would be shocked if we didn't.  I don't think that character was just a one-time appearance.  To me, it seems like we were intentionally shown that she is both a mechanic and a caring babysitter because it will be worked into at least one more episode down the road.  We haven't seen if she has any fighting skills, or if she can shoot, etc., but being a mechanic and a babysitter could be very helpful to Mando once again.

And paigow mentioned a good idea -- the droids!  Peli's droids might be useful to Mando.

Needless to say, at some point we will find out who the mystery person was that walked up to Fennec Shand.  I wouldn't even be shocked if we saw Fennec herself again too (either still alive or in a flashback or something).

I even sort of think we will see someone from that crazy Chapter 6 episode again.  To me, that is the one episode that seems the most 'standalone-ish' out of all of them, and yet some people say it is their favorite.  I think it was very good, but it seems the least connected to the rest of the season to me.  We met several new (unsavory) characters in that episode, and I can't help but think that at least one of them is going to show up in a future episode.  Maybe it would even be a scenario in which one of them has to reluctantly help Mando with a mission.  But if not to help him, then one or more of them will reappear to try to kill Mando and capture the baby.

Sooner or later, I think that Omera will be seen again.  Maybe not in Season 2, but at some point.  If it's not a situation where Mando decides to move to Sorgan and settle down with her, then we might see her in a scenario where she shows off more of her shooting skills, or we learn about how she knew how to shoot before Mando and Baby Yoda appeared.

Edited to add:  It just dawned on me that when Moff Gideon inevitably sets out to trap/kill Mando and capture Baby Yoda next season, IF he gives any further details about why Baby is so important to him (other than just being a useful 'weapon' to have in his arsenal), it might actually give Mando a clue or a lead as to where Baby Yoda's "kind" can be located.  In other words, Gideon could reveal some little nugget of info about Baby that ends up being helpful to Mando as far as his quest to reunite Baby with his kind.  Gideon would not be helping him intentionally, of course, but something he says could be useful.

I agree that we will see many familiar faces next season.

I am wondering the same thing.   He has only mentioned/announced 2 that I am aware of, but that doesn't mean that he's not working on more.  When Disney saw what a big hit this show was, and how much praise it was getting, it would seem that it should be in their best interest to keep it going for a while.  But who knows?

I saw someone refer to this show as a "limited" series or a "miniseries" or some such thing.  I can't recall where I saw that random comment, but I wondered if it had ever been officially stated anywhere that it was supposed to only last for a couple of seasons.  I don't think Jon Favreau has ever said anything other than that the second season was happening.  I don't know if he has ever indicated that the series could run indefinitely, or if it is all supposed to be wrapped up at the end of Season 2.

But I could have easily missed something that was said in all of the Mandalorian news that came out of this year's press, as well as out of the Star Wars Celebration in April and the D23 Expo in August.

There are a few upcoming events in 2020 at which more info could possibly be revealed:

(1) First, there is a TCA Winter Press Tour in January 2020, and then a TCA Summer Press Tour in July.   Any network or streaming service that chooses to participate releases news and announcements of some sort at their panel/screening/party.  At the moment, it does not appear that Disney+ is involved in the Winter TCA event next month, though they could easily jump into the Summer TCA event in July, or they could piggyback onto one of the ABC press days and release news;

(2) Then there is Comic-Con in July.  If I recall correctly, The Mandalorian was not involved in this past summer's Comic-Con, at least not in a big way.  However, now that it's a hit, I would not be shocked if there is a Mandalorian panel at the convention in July; and

(3) And then we have the most likely event for Star Wars news or revelations in 2020, and that is the Star Wars Celebration in August (in Anaheim).   We'll probably get an official Season 2 start date at that event, as well as other info, a panel with the actors, etc.

I can't imagine they would end such a popular show after only 2 seasons. Back in November, the Walt Disney Studios co-chairman and chief creative officer Alan Horn said:

“The Mandalorian is already proving to be a big thing, so if that series proves to be so compelling that we reverse engineer it into a theatrical release, a two-hour film or whatever, O.K.,”

So they seem to be open to anything at this point that will continue the story.

I was just thinking about how for the longest time before the new trilogy came out Mark Hamill was mostly a voice actor. Plus the guy seems like he doesn't take Star Wars too seriously (see his Simpson's episode). So I wonder what the odds of hearing some kind of radio transmission from Luke next season would be.

The first two are filming now but Falcon and the Winter Soldier isn’t set to premiere until Fall 2020. I’m expecting both it and The Mandalorian to be scheduled so that the renewal date for the initial yearly subscriptions falls right in the middle of the season.

In interviews he’s talked about how exciting it is that he has 25 mostly undeveloped years of the Star Wars timeline to play with. I wouldn't be surprised if he has loose plans that cover a good chunk of that time.

Are they even looking for his home world? The way the Armorer talked it sounded more like finding Jedi/Force Users than Baby Yoda's race.

I was actually wondering if we'd see a post ROTJ Luke or hell given Feloni's involvement we could get a Live Action Ezra or Ahsoka.

When I used the word "home" as far as finding Baby Yoda's home, I didn't necessarily mean home world or race.  I'm interpreting the scenario as that Mando is going to have to leave Baby with his own kind (presumably Jedi -- the "enemy sorcerers") when he finds them, and therefore that will be Baby's new "home."  His home will no longer be with Mando.  So if Mando leaves him with Jedi, then that's his home.  Wherever he leaves Baby, that will be his home.

I don't think Mando will find the place that is going to be Baby's home right away.  It will take a minute to find the people or creatures who will ultimately take care of Baby Yoda.

However, I have seen a few YouTube reaction videos to this episode in which the people are pondering whether or not Mando will find the Baby's actual home world and other creatures just like him.  So it seems to be something that is crossing some people's minds, and if Mando found the home world, then that would also be "home" if he left Baby there.

I guess he could find a home world instead.  But I agree that the Armorer was seemingly referring to Jedi/Force Users/"sorcerers."

Ben was born in 5 ABY. The show takes place in 9 ABY. There's no date for the academy's founding yet, but he destroys it in 28 ABY.

I wonder if Luke will show up. Mark Hamill is still in good shape, they could use the de-ageing tech on him. Or maybe just style him younger. I see that as a better option, because IMO the de-ageing tech isn't as good as it should be.

Well obi wan aged like 40 years between episodes 3 and 4 even though there is only 19 years between them. So it would be kind of hilarious if Hamill just showed up with minimal de-aging looking like he does now even though it has only been 5 years since Jedi.

Maybe you were thinking of RoS timeline? I've caught myself doing that a couple of times.

I think I thought of it as Sabine was something like 16 or 18 when Rebels started, and then 19 or 21 when it ended. Luke appears in the last season of Rebels as a toddler, running on Tattooine at night, so that puts him at about 5, or let's say 15 years younger than Sabine. If Luke starts ANH at, generously, 16 (I think it's closer to 20), that makes her 31 in ANH, 34 by ESB and 35 by ROTJ. Here's where I get screwed up: I assumed this took place after TFA for no reason at all. On a rewatch last night, it occurred to me that none of the tech or troopers were in fact First Order. They're all classic Empire, and they even refer to everyone as Imps or Imperials. So definitely my error. This takes place 5 ABY?

I hereby nominate Charlize Theron to play a grown up Sabine Wren.

Rumors are all over Twitter that not only is Rebels getting an animated follow-up series but that Filioni is helming it too and the series is well on its way to a season two already.

I’m posting it here because I also know Filioni has been very vocal about getting Ahsoka into Live Action Disney for awhile now. I was hoping with all the news that there are going to be recognizable Star Wars players in series two of Mandalorian, that like everyone else, Sabine and Ahsoka would be landing on this show at some point. Especially if the Mandalorians were wiped out, Sabine’s perspective would be really interesting. If the animated show story is true, it dashes my hopes of a backdoor spin-off of a Live Action show for Sabine and Ahsoka off of a Mandalorian appearance.

I'd love this show conceptually, but wouldn't it tend to be a little heavy, considering (a) that Sabine's peeps were brutally massacred and she lost the Darksaber so she probably has some serious scarring and (b) Ahsoka survived order 66 but her master became the most feared monster in the entire galaxy. I feel like they'd be sullen when I want them to be adventurous. It seems like unless you rejigger the backstory a little, there wouldn't be a lot of "fun."

I actually would love to write a show about scenes just before or just after scenes from the movies. When I watch Star Wars stuff and I'm a little stoned, I always fixated on things like the Death Star meeting, which had to have started with those various military types getting an email meeting request from Tarkin that said "Death Star Plan Loss Discussion" where everyone looked to see if they were optional, were disappointed they were required, and REALLY disappointed when Vader was also on the list. I can think about this scene alone for like 18 hours straight. WHY IS NO ONE BEGGING ME TO RUN A STAR WARS SHOW :).

Well, I don’t know if you have watched Rebels, but Ahsoka seems okay after Order 66-she feels guilty about Anakin but is on the same thought as Obi Wan that Vader killed Anakin. Sabine’s story would be really interesting to me, because she was protecting Lothal at the end of Rebels. So-did she leave to help the Mandalorians while the Empire wiped them out? Did she even know about it? Was her family wiped out? I think Sabine would want to help reclaim the Darksaber. She gave it to another Mandalorian to lead all the clans, so she wasn’t the one to lose it.

I think having Sabine and Ahsoka on the Mandalorian would be interesting because they bring different viewpoints to the show. Ahsoka and Sabine could give pointers on training The Child. Sabine could talk about the different Clans and how their rules are different between them.

I thought having a live action show would be hard because their story, looking for Erza Bridger, would be similar to Mando’s story. It could be different if we saw things from Erza’s side too.

I really wonder how the Moff Gideon portion of the story is going to play out.  For example, is Season 2 going to pick up right where Season 1 left off, with Gideon perhaps going after Greef and Cara right away, prompting Mando to come back and rescue them?  Or is Gideon going to not even bother with Greef and Cara, and just try to get on a new ship and chase after Mando and Baby Yoda in space?  Maybe he will have his contacts on other planets alert him to Mando/Baby Yoda sightings.  We know Gideon will be part of Season 2 at some point, but I just wonder if it will be immediate, right from the first episode, or if there might be a bit of a lapse before Gideon goes after them again.

Since we never really found out from Gideon what, specifically, he wants with Baby Yoda and why the Baby means more to him "than you will ever know," I get the feeling that, as Gideon's interest in the Baby is eventually clarified, through him we will probably learn some sort of detail or details about the Baby that will inadvertently help Mando to get closer to his mission to reunite Baby with his own kind.  I'm not saying that Gideon will drop a nugget of info and Mando will instantly know where to bring the Baby, but I think Gideon will reveal something that will (unintentionally) be helpful information for Mando.

Looking back at Chapter 5 of Season 1, not only do we have the mystery of who it was that discovered Fennec to be revealed in Season 2, but Mando also mentioned the Hutts in passing, when he was talking about Fennec's crime connections.  He could easily get tangled up with someone from the Hutt camp -- a random Hutt family member, or associate of the Hutts, or whatever -- if he goes back to Tatooine, which I think he will.   Something involving Fennec will lead to a problem for Mando -- maybe someone will think that Mando was the one who killed her, even though he wasn't.  Or maybe it will turn out that she is not dead at all.

And I still think that we will see Peli, the mechanic-babysitter, again.  Her services are too valuable to Mando to not pay her a visit.  Even if he didn't need ship maintenance or fuel, he already knows she loves his new "son," and that he can have her watch him as he goes off to deal with scum and villainy.  He doesn't have Kuiil to help with ship repairs and childcare now, so Peli might be needed.

It continues to be fascinating to me to see how people are responding to this series on YouTube -- from the diehard Star Wars fans to the total Star Wars novices, and every level in between!  As new reaction/recap/review/discussion/prediction videos for The Mandalorian pop up on YouTube almost daily, I am realizing that there are some viewers who seem to think that Baby Yoda was more or less just the "plot" for Season 1, and that his story line will be wrapping up in Season 2, and then he'll be off the show.  In other words, I get the feeling that some people don't think that Baby Yoda was intended to be a regular character on the series until it ends.   They think he was just a temporary story and that's it.  I even saw a couple of people say they hope there is less of Baby Yoda in Season 2, as they essentially thought he was taking valuable time away from Mando's bounty-hunting, butt-kicking escapades, and they want the show to dive deep into the Mandalorian lore and culture.

Now, setting aside my own personal hopes and wishes for Baby Yoda's presence on the show, I don't know if I agree with the viewers who assume that Baby Yoda was supposed to just be a temporary plot for a couple of seasons, and that he'll leave and the series will move on to a different plot.  I might have agreed if everything had been set up a bit differently.  But honestly, just looking at all of the "destruction" (to use the Armorer's word) that took place in an effort to keep Baby Yoda safe and protected, I kind of think that he was set up to be a very important regular character on the series -- probably until its final season, whenever that may be.

I mean... Kuiil died; IG-11 "died" (even though he was never alive); multiple Mandalorians apparently died; Greef and Cara risked their lives; the people of Sorgan were at risk when Baby Yoda was being tracked, and Mando was very close to dying after risking his life for BY in every episode -- all in an effort to keep Baby Yoda from being harmed, captured and/or killed.   And now Mando has officially been assigned to be Baby Yoda's father, which seems to be significant.  I think the writers want to play up the father-son aspect going forward, and not end it so soon by having Mando find Baby's "own kind" right away.  Otherwise, they never had to have the Armorer tell Mando that he would be "as its father" for now, if they didn't plan to work that angle a bit more.

I don't think the show's writers and creators did ALL of that just to not have Baby Yoda around after Season 2, or even to show less of him in Season 2.  I kind of don't think he was intended to be just a temporary storyline.  I tend to think that BY was intended to be an integral part of the series as a whole, and that Mando might not leave him with his "own kind" until the series ends -- or at least sometime in the final season (whenever that is).

But who knows?  I could be way off base in my guess.  Does anyone else here think that Baby Yoda was intended to just be a temporary character on The Mandalorian, and that he'll be gone after Season 2??
