Why Grammar Matters: A Place To Discuss Matters Of Grammar
Browncoat replied to candall's topic in Everything Else
Another gem from our local news -- not only is it a sad piece of news, the crawl on the screen was sad: "Three women disappeared after crossing Mexican boarder." And no, I don't think they had a Mexican person renting a room in their house. -

A less popular instrument would have better odds, so he wasn't wrong in choosing one. The more popular the instrument, the worse your odds of making a mark with it. The exception that proves the Whoopi-as-omniscient-cranky-curmudgeon is her role in The Color Purple, and she was really good in that. -
It is. She was fired from her high-powered conductor position, and could not get another job with a well-known symphony. At the end, she was conducting a small group who were playing the soundtrack to a video game for a bunch of cosplaying gamers, probably at a small, local con.

3/5 for this week, with the asterisk for Monday.

I had no idea for FJ, and the only TS I got was pick and shovel. I started off the week so well, too!

I wouldn't recommend violin. Everyone and their brother plays violin. One of my college roommates switched from violin to viola so she'd have a better chance at getting in (and getting a better chair in) the orchestra. The best she could do with violin was second, but she was first for viola. -
Instaget FJ for me tonight. I also got the TS of spleen, dustbuster, basal, open, Ruhr, and overture. I should have gotten commencement, but it just wouldn't come to my brain in time. I was rooting for Maya, but am okay with Justin.

Woo hoo! My local station is back on air, so I'll be able to watch tonight!

I was really hoping for a scene with them actually having the milkshakes. -
It’s on the James River, and there is river traffic to the Chesapeake Bay/Atlantic Ocean, so it’s not a terrible guess.

The local TV station that shows Jeopardy! is off-air due to a brush fire that ruined a cable or something, so last night and tonight were archive games for me. I have discovered that I do much worse when I'm not watching! It doesn't help that I can't see photos for the video clues on the archive -- I feel certain I would have gotten one of the TS last night if I could have seen the photo. Anyway, Tuesday night -- did not get FJ, but gave myself the TS of quail (I know what a quail looks like!) Tonight, FJ was an instaget, and I got the TS of drummer and Virginia Woolf. I suspect I would have gotten border collie if I'd seen the photo. I really hope they get the cable or whatever it is fixed soon -- at least before Ghosts tomorrow night!

Thank you for posting that, @cynicat! I hadn't seen it yet. I love those Subaru ads.

Instaget FJ for me tonight. I'm a little sad, though -- I was rooting for Claire. I also got the many TS of I Love Lucy, Novolny, Gray's Anatomy, gorge, manifest, Green Book, Strunk & White, geospatial, Greta Thunberg, and Katherine Johnson. ETA: I noticed tonight that the middle contestant started the first round. Has that been a thing for this whole tournament? That the contestant in the left podium doesn't start the game?

Who even reads the James Bond books? Doesn't everyone just watch the movies? 😉

Yep. Where I grew up, it’s buttermilk cornbread — not sweet, and definitely no kernels of corn.

2/5 for me this week.
-
I didn't get FJ tonight. I definitely was distracted -- this time by thunderstorms that were rolling through. I probably should have just turned off the TV and had an archive night. The only TS I got were Sven and Jiminy Cricket.

If ghosts haunt where they die, there might not be very many in a graveyard.

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"
Browncoat replied to Betweenyouandme's topic in Everything Else
My peeve today is that I had to purchase yet another electrical adapter -- this time for Europe, because of course they can't be the same as the UK. Why can't electricity be the same all over the world? -
Commercials That Annoy, Irritate or Outright Enrage

I hate that Applebee's is using a great Roy Orbison song for their tacky commercials. -
I did not get FJ tonight -- I got distracted again, even though I tried so hard! I stayed fairly focussed until the break between J and DJ, but, well, I don't even know what distracted me! So all my TS were in the first round, too -- sandpiper, polo, hockey, osprey, and golf.

It is not incorrect according to merriam-webster.com: "Further is the older of the two, with farther originating from it as a variant in Middle English. For much of their history the words have been used interchangeably. As adverbs, they still are interchangeable when applied to distance (whether spatial, temporal, or metaphorical)." "[W]hen using an adjective to refer to distance, either literal or figurative, the words are once again interchangeable (although further is increasing in frequency)."

Jiffy corn bread is way way too sweet for me.
-
Same here. And I got the TS of Sunday In The Park With George, Monday, clatter, Pont Neuf, mercury, and Bridge of Sighs.
-
I knew as soon as I saw the category that I would struggle with FJ, and indeed I struggled to the point that I did not come up with anything. But I did manage the TS of jurisprudence, philately, lace, and gaucho.
