My thought process for FJ: "Hmm, Columbus. Nina, Pinta, Santa Maria. Which one sounds like an island? Santa Maria!" Total guess, and I did write it down in plenty of time. I also got the TS of 52, green grasshopper, and Catalan.

Instead of italicizing, I said italicization, which I’m pretty sure isn’t even a word, but it does have the correct number of dotted letters.

Instaguess FJ tonight for me. I had zero confidence in my guess, but I did write it down, so it counts! As for TS, I only got two -- cafe & chafe, and Al Franken.
-
That's what I did, too. Definitely an instaget FJ Tuesday night. But the only TS I got were antifreeze and lavender.

I loved both the corn hole tournament and the groom-posal storylines! (Although a "groom-posal" is just plain dumb and stupid.) Malcolm as "Allen Dumbledore" cracked me up so much.

Instaget FJ for me tonight. Because, according to Kris Kristofferson, Jesus was a Capricorn. I only got two TS, pink lady and Adventure -- both were complete guesses.

Haven, by Emma Donoghue. Historical fiction about the monastery on Skellig Michael. Not action-packed, and mostly horrifying in a "how can people do that" kind of way. Interesting possibilities of how that monastery began. The Birdcage, by Eve Chase. Riveting story of three half-sisters called back to their father's home in Cornwall after a 20-year absence. They spent summers there when they were children, but the last summer there included an eclipse and a catastrophe. It really held my interest -- I didn't want to stop reading. I recommend it. Next up, How to be Eaten, by Maria Adelmann. According to the book jacket blurb, it's "A darkly funny and provocative debut novel that reimagines classic fairy-tale characters as modern women in a support group for trauma." I hope it's funny -- The Birdcage was decidedly not.

S04.E10: An Afro and a Peugeot
Browncoat replied to jewel21's topic in Bob ❤️ Abishola (Bob Hearts Abishola)
I don't know what else to call them -- the slightly larger bits where you're supposed to put your hands. I think they're meant to be ergonomic or something. I mostly drive with one hand at the bottom of the steering wheel. Or with both at roughly 9 and 3. -

There may well be, but if the teacher's rules are in their syllabus, the school will back the teacher. At least, that's the way it is at the college where I work. -

And yet steering wheels are still made with the grips at 10 and 2. My 2019 car has them. -
Why Grammar Matters: A Place To Discuss Matters Of Grammar

Dear news people, Dual and duel are not the same thing. That sports team has not won the last ten "duals" with that other sports team. -
Oh, I forgot that the MIMAL one was an asterisk -- I get an asterisk! Yay!

3/5 this week because I didn't write anything down today. If I'd gone with my gut and written down my first thought, I'd have 4/5.

I thought of the correct FJ response, but didn't write it down -- I didn't think it started that long ago! Note to self: write something down! And the only TS I got was comme ci comme ça.

Well, that was an interesting game. I've only nominally heard of BJ Novak, and the other two were complete strangers. No idea who they are! Brendan was a machine, though, and BJ's and Cari's FJ responses cracked me up. I was surprised Brendan missed FJ. There were a couple of other surprising misses, but this was not a travesty of a game. I'm looking forward to seeing Patton Oswalt go up against Brendan. I missed Michael Cera's game, so I have no idea whether he'll be a contender in the next round.

I waffled between Westminster and the Tower of London for FJ tonight, mentally flipping a coin and came up with the correct response. Whew! The only TS I got were J., and stays. You were not.

Milestone Moments: All The Celebrity Vitals
Browncoat replied to OtterMommy's topic in Everything Else TV
Oh, man, that sucks! I had the great good fortune to see CS&N twice. Great shows, both times. The second time, though, the stranger sitting next to me had clearly been pre-gaming -- she kept going on and on about how these guys were her favorites, and she was their number one fan and so on, which fine, whatever. Then she asked me which one of the three on stage was Neil Young.- 3.5k replies

Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

Damn you, Krispy Kreme, and your Biscoff cookie butter iced doughnuts! (They're too delicious!) -
And then immediately get all hot and sweaty again because it's hot! There are only so many clothes you can take off and cool showers you can take, and you're still going to be hot. You can put on more clothes, or wrap up in a blanket. Or find a sunny spot outside and bask like a lizard. I think there's a lot you can do to warm up! 😉

S05.E12: Stuck In the Middle and Stuck In the Past
Browncoat replied to Pallas's topic in The Conners
Becky probably didn’t read the syllabus closely enough about deadlines and consequences. It also seems likely that that paper was worth as much as 50% of the final grade. I know teachers who will not accept late work, no matter the circumstances — at best, the student gets an incomplete, at worst a zero for the assignment, which can cause the student to flunk the course. And if the course is required for a degree, the student gets to take it again. -

Browncoat replied to Pallas's topic in The Conners
Y'know, I did kind of feel bad for Becky when her paper wasn't accepted, but on the other hand, this is why we tell students not to wait until the last day to write the damn things. I guarantee that paper wasn't just assigned that week. She'd have been given several weeks between the assignment and the due date. However, I did laugh when Jackie asked Mark to get the box because he's 12 feet tall. -
Instaget FJ for me tonight, and I got the TS of Confederacy, Charlottesville, and Jerry Brown. Erin definitely left out the "s" of Charlottesville, and I was astonished that no one else picked up on it.

A Case Of The Mondays: Vent Your Work Spleen Here
Browncoat replied to potatoradio's topic in Everything Else
I wouldn't read too much into how many people are on the interview committee. I formed a committee that just happened to be all women (most of my co-workers are women), and I had to add a man for diversity!
