  1. I suspect it was more that people may not know there's a college in Gettysburg, and concentrate on the "college in PA" part of the clue more than the "Civil War field hospital" part. Because you're right -- I don't know off the top of my head of any other battles in PA besides Gettysburg.
  2. Well, from one FJ that I never would have gotten, to one that I got right away -- it came to me so quickly and easily that it seemed wrong and I tried my hardest to think of any other possibility. I stuck with my original impulse in the end, though. I don't think I've ever heard a kitchen like that called a Pullman kitchen. Galley kitchen, yes, but not Pullman. The only TS I got were de Winter and France. Rebecca is one of my favorite books, and it made me kind of sad that none of them knew de Winter. Boo hiss that Claire didn't win.
  3. Between the cast and the inconvenient random Wednesday scheduling (is it still supposedly slated for Weds? I'll check the other thread), I likely won't watch.
  4. I like that commercial too, and the one in the stuffed animals reminds me of E.T.
  5. A while back, there was an answer that relied on lead being plumbum, and I got that, but somehow missed that connection tonight. D’oh! And I almost forgot the shout-out (sorta) to @CarpeDiem54! I read a book once in which one of the characters was asked the meaning of “carpe diem”, and that person replied, “And then God created the fishes?” I don’t remember much else about the book, but that still cracks me up when I think about it.
  6. I also said pscoliosis! I just could not think of either a chronic back condition (other than scoliosis), or a synonym for graphite/pencil lead. I could have sat here for weeks and not come up with the correct response. I only wrote down two TS that I got -- oxygen sensor and low emission vehicle. I recently had to have my O2S replaced, and I drive an LEV. Oh, and Steve, the Beatitudes are NOT a book of the Bible! Still rooting for Claire! I hope tomorrow's categories will be more to her liking.
  7. Nope, no primaries here, but there was one recently in neighboring West Virginia, and for reasons unknown to me, one of their more despicable candidates ran ads on the local stations here. Which was only marginally worse than My Pillow.
  8. Oh, goody. Another show I can skip. Even if it weren't Austin, it sounds kind of boring.
  9. I am so sick and tired of the My Pillow guy and his stupid commercials that I can't see straight. And it seems like they're shown at every.single.commercial break during my local news. Also, even if it is the Bestest!Pillow! In!The!World!, I can't support that idiot.
  10. The more I think about it, the less I like the scene where Roseanne is drunk/stoned. It seemed like the directors just said, "Hey, you're drunk/stoned. Ready, GO!" and let her improvise, while Dan just reacted, but did have a couple of scripted lines to work in when he could. It really didn't work for me -- it seemed so awkward, even allowing for the awkwardness of the situation.
  11. I don’t think only 21 states, mostly in the west, counts, particularly since there doesn’t seem to be an equivalent here, unlike Hardee’s and Carl Jr. The category was “Sorta Before And After” — all the answers were just slightly off like that. ETA: Look at me, making quotes with my iPad!
  12. Of COURSE Larry won. I didn't like him in his first game, and I'm still not a fan. However, I laughed and laughed when he started DD hunting in the first round and started one clue below the DD. By the way, Jeopardy! clue writers, Jack In The Box is not a national chain. There are whole swathes of the country who've never eaten at one, and don't know anything about them. Although the clue was written such that if you've at least heard of Jack In The Box, you might be able to figure it out, but still. I really enjoyed the Sorta Before And After category -- some great puns there. The only TS I got were Tiber and Alaska. Mythology is generally lost on me, so I was clueless for FJ. Forehead slapper after the answer was revealed, but before that? Nothing came to me at all. ETA: His name is not Smokey The Bear -- it's just Smokey Bear.
  13. I can do that in my non-trailer house.
  14. I finally got to see this and I loved it! Certainly one of my favorite Wes Anderson films, if not the favorite (Grand Budapest Hotel gives it a run for its money). The voice actors were outstanding, and I really enjoyed all the little animated touches like the randomly sneezing dogs, Nutmeg's fur gently blowing in the breeze, the ticks on the dogs, and the rats. I really want to see it again and pay more attention to the background bits. I admit, I was terribly concerned about how Spots would get out of his crate (glad he made it!), and the science behind the cure-all serum was outrageously bad. Oh, and your kidneys aren't in the front like that, and newborn puppies' eyes aren't open. But I loved the film despite those horribly bad details.
  15. Hooray for Claire! Though, honestly, I would have been happy with anyone except Judy. I don't recall her bugging me so much in her game last week, but perhaps that was the really bad game and everyone bugged me? I only got Hammett and basking shark, and FJ was almost an instaget. I wasn't sure if Arabic was one of the six languages, but couldn't think of any other that fit the description that might be. So, Arabic it was! You did, and that's probably the only time I liked her. Her voice grated, and she was way too slow picking clues. No kidding. That was ridiculous.
  16. I'm totally in. Rami Malek looks like a good choice for Freddie.
  17. I don’t even remember what the lederhosen clue said, but I immediately recognized them in the photo. It’s possible I was helped by recently having seen European Vacation, with Chevy Chase in his lederhosen, but I prefer to think I knew it from Denholm Elliot’s “drunken” observation that Jamie Lee Curtis was wearing lederhosen on the train in Trading Places.
  18. Well, that started off as a good game, but kind of crashed and burned there towards the end. FJ was an instaget for me, and I was surprised that none of the contestants were even close. As a pedantic aside, Salmonella is caused by a bacterium, not a virus! And the name of the bacterium is... Salmonella! I got that TS -- cancer -- as well as edentate (thanks, Latin!), netiquette, Beethoven, and the extremely surprising miss of lederhosen. I was really hoping the woman would win.
  19. I guess no one in the Connor household has ever heard of making their phone into a wi-fi hotspot.
  20. I didn't even think of that! When I use my laptop, I generally just highlight the part of the post I want to quote. I'll try that the next time I use the iPad -- most often in the mornings if I have time before I go to work. The iPad wakes up faster than the laptop. I think we called them mimeographs, or maybe just carbon copies -- either way, you attached the original carbon to a big rotating drum, and the copies came out with that lovely purple ink and intoxicating aroma. And were slightly damp. The county I grew up in had (still has) just one library, and it was awkward to get to, so we had the bookmobile that came every week. I was very fortunate that one of their stops was almost right in front of my house. I don't remember any limits on the number of books I could check out, and the librarian was very good about recommending books, and bringing things he thought I might like.
  21. @saber5055, ditto to everything you said about mimeographs! One bad thing about iPads is that you can’t quote other posts — or at least I can’t. If someone else knows the secret, please share!
  22. I had to think for a second about FJ today, but got it in plenty of time to write it down. I was a little surprised that two of them missed it. Really good game today! Seems like there were hardly any TS -- I didn't write any down anyway. Although I've never heard The Pleiades pronounced quite that way, nor syzygy with a hard "g".
  23. One book is usually not enough if I'm going away for a week or more, unless it's a weighty tome. :)
