MG called this episode "a love letter, and a little bit of a late Christmas gift to the fans who appreciate all the little moments we fold into the episodes." (source) Well, I think "The Return" was less of a love letter and more of an F.U. to the fans... For fans complaining that Ra's is less scary than Slade -- Slade is disarmed by Thea (didn't he learn anything from underestimating small women after Felicity jabbed him with the needle?). For fans complaining about Laurel becoming the BC -- Laurel: "you knew that my life was always headed towards that mask" (Black Canary, bitches!). For fans complaining about Sara being killed -- Laurel pours the alcohol out on Sara's grave (tell me again that Laurel loved her sister?). For fans complaining about Tommy being killed -- Tommy appears as protective and caring to Laurel and his then unknown half-sister Thea (what a waste of story potential!), For fans who love Olicity -- Felicity to photo of creepy-looking Ollie: "you're cute" (really?!). For fans complaining about Diggle being sidelined - Diggle makes a cameo appearance as a security guard at a rich boy's party (and Andy, we hardly knew ye). For fans who loved Moira and Walter -- no Moira or Walter. For fans who love Team Arrow -- no Team Arrow.

MG won't put Felicity in a mask & costume. He still regards her as a supporting character. At the recent Long Beach Comic Expo, he and his wife, Tara Butters, were comparing Jarvis (from Agent Carter) to Felicity and calling them both supporting, albeit necessary, characters.

Looking at that IBT list again, I'm surprised that Agent Carter wasn't included. IMO, Peggy is more badass than most of the women on that list.

This is the first time that I've seen Laurel/BC included on one of these kinds of lists (one might argue, of course, that Sara/Canary was a lot more badass, but Sara's 'dead' so I guess she no longer counts)... This is interesting - Matt Carter wants CL to return as a brand new character (to avoid continued comparisons with Laurel/BC), but the overwhelming majority of people voting in the online poll wants CL to return as Sara/Canary... ‘Arrow’ / ‘The Flash’ spin-off debate: Should Caity Lotz play Sara Lance, or whole new character? It might not have been MG who said it. I distinctly recall that there was a lot of discussion on this forum late last year about a spoiler that Oliver would have help in the form of 3 additional superheroes by the end of this season. So if Thea also gets a mask, then she would make it 4. If Roy dies and Thea takes his costume, it would certainly fit the EPs' theme of each superhero is actually not the first one in that costume (except for Ray/Atom).
-
Since it seems like Thea is getting a mask as well, is she going to be a hero or a villain? I'm assuming 'hero'. But then there was MG's spoiler about how there would be 3 additional superheroes at the end of this season. Thea would make 4. So that would point to one of the following being killed or not there at the end of this season for some reason - Roy/Arsenal, Laurel/BC, Ray/Atom, Thea/?.

You may be right. At least two articles - this one and this one - put that pic of Oliver in the hospital as being part of shooting for 3x20 ("The Fallen"). Oh well, shoot that theory.

I think they were killed. I think MG's response was sarcastic or mocking or whatever - he sounded like a parent humoring a small child: "No, your goldfish isn't really dead. He's just sleeping."
