  3. On Smallville, Clark started out as a 16-year-old. So by the time that show ended its 10-year run, he was in his 20's. If Arrow lasts 10 years, by the end of the series, Oliver will be approaching 40 - usually the age of the parents on CW shows.

  7. It's really sad if you look at the identity journeys that the EPs promoted last summer as being this season's theme. Oliver's identity journey is all about him - his internal struggles and f**kups, his hopes and fears, Oliver vs. the Arrow. However, the female characters' identity journeys are all about someone else. Felicity is Ray's prop. Thea is Malcolm's puppet. Even Laurel's identity journey is about her dead sister - and although she's apparently resolved that conflict to being herself, her self is still being her sister's lookalike out in the field. EDITED TO ADD: Diggle's identity journey ("Am I a sidekick or am I my own man? Am I a crime fighter or am I a father?") is also about him. His journey isn't about propping up Lyla while she undergoes her own evolution. He isn't anyone's puppet. He isn't trying to be like someone else. So, there's been a definite difference between the male characters' identity journeys and the female characters' identity journeys.
  8. Rich Epstein's usual snarky review of "Nanda Parbat" - I always enjoy reading his reviews, although his snark seems subdued this week. Also, ... Are We Losing Diggle Or Felicity At The End Of The Season? Recapping Arrow 3.15: ‘Nanda Parbat’ By Rich Epstein Posted February 28, 2015 http://www.bleedingcool.com/2015/02/28/recapping-arrow-3-15-nanda-parbat/
  9. It sounds like, if you're rooting for any couple to be endgame on this show, you actually don't want them to get together until the very last episode of the very last season of the series. MG: "My point being, that it’s unlikely that anything established in the middle of Season 3 will become the permanent status quo all the way to the end of the series. One of the things, I think, that makes Arrow special is that it’s in a constant state of evolution. Very little on the show has permanence, including relationships."
  10. I was looking forward to 3x20, but MG's latest spoilers have once made me dread yet another upcoming episode.

  13. I've been thinking about what makes a great couple. I don't think that opposites necessarily make a great couple, nor do I think that similar people necessarily make a great couple. Plus, you can mean different things by saying opposites and similars. You can have opposite personalities and similar values. You can have similar personalities and opposite values. Etc. If I had to nail it down, I'd say that a great couple is made up of two people who complement each other. By "complement", I mean the definition of "add to (something) in a way that enhances or improves it." (source) Somehow they're better together than apart. Plus, some couples just have an added chemistry when together. Think of the famous Hollywood dancing pair of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Individually, he was more the sidekick than the leading man, and she usually played the everyday gal. Together, they played the glamorous leading couple. The classic line (supposedly uttered by Katharine Hepburn) was that he gave her class and she gave him sex appeal. (source) This is admittedly not the best example, and maybe I'm explaining myself badly. I guess I'm trying to say that I think a great couple has a synergistic effect - where their interaction produces a total effect that is greater than the sum of their individual elements. Bottom line: I don't see this synergistic effect when Ray and Felicity are together, or even when Barry and Felicity were together (in the same scene). But I do see it when Oliver and Felicity are together.
  14. 'Arrow'-loving romance authors have mixed feelings about 'Nanda Parbat' Allison Brennan and Lavinia Kent, Special for USA TODAY 12:47 a.m. EST February 28, 2015 http://www.usatoday.com/story/happyeverafter/2015/02/28/arrow--nanda-parbat-allison-brennan-lavinia-kent/24167649/
  15. Last season Oliver told Felicity that he couldn't be with someone he could really care about because of the life he had to lead as the Arrow (clearly implying that was the reason he wasn't going to get involved with her). Subsequently he got involved with Sara and was kissing her in front of Felicity in the Arrowcave. Since then it's been made clear that he loved Sara. At least Felicity wasn't the one who rejected a relationship with Oliver, giving some lame excuse, before getting involved with Ray. The main problem I have with the Raylicity sex scene is the timing of it - when Oliver is off possibly getting killed again.
  16. Part of the problem is that Ray Palmer's appearances weren't naturally integrated into the regular Arrow show. Barry Allen's appearances on Arrow and Firestorm's appearances on The Flash were organically part of the main plots of these shows. However, Ray's appearances comprise a completely separate story that seemed to be on a different show and spliced into episodes of Arrow. Plus the more light-hearted tone of Ray's scenes was in jarring contrast to the much darker tone of Arrow this season. In the past, Felicity has been used to add a lighter, more humorous tone to scenes, but it was done in small bits and integrated seamlessly into the Arrow story.

  21. I haven't given up on Oliver and Felicity. Before this season, they had so many moments where they just felt right together on so many levels. Maybe it's because the natural chemistry between SA and EBR is just off the charts. So I blame this season's f**ked up storytelling and OOC writing. But opinions can differ. I see no chemistry between Ray and Felicity, but others do. (shrug)
