  1. They've already edited it to include her; she's in the penultimate spot, if I remember correctly (I saw it during Friday's Thin Man marathon and realized they'd added her). They always leave room to add late-breaking deaths or performers they forgot, which I like.
  2. I don't drink beer very often anymore (it makes me too full), but I enjoy an IPA from time to time -Stone is probably my favorite - or an amber or pale ale. The only lager I like is Shiner Bock. I love most red wines (and the occasional pinot grigio on a hot day) and most liquor. Tequila and I had a falling out a long time ago, but I do still love margarita night from time to time. Vodka, whiskey, gin, rum, etc. - we all still get along just fine (not all at the same time -- although a Long Island iced tea isn't bad if I want something sweet). I particularly like Talisker (18 year), but any good single malt scotch will make me happy. The occasional after-dinner liqueur is nice. My most-common drinks are usually pretty unadulterated (e.g. bourbon on the rocks), but I love a spicy Bloody Mary (made with Red Eye mix) on weekend mornings.
  3. Be aware the numbers on the can are merely "Guaranteed Analysis" -- a maximum or minimum percentage the manufacturer guarantees it doesn't exceed or fall below. To truly know how much fat (or protein, carbs, phosphorus, magnesium, whatever) a food contains, you need the "as fed" percentages from the manufacturer (sometimes it's available on the website, sometimes you have to contact the company). Then, to accurately compare one food to another, you need to convert to dry matter analysis (get the as-fed moisture percentage and subtract that from 100 to get the percentage of the food that is dry matter; then divide the as-fed percentage of whatever element you're interested in by that dry matter percentage). As an example of why these numbers matter, let’s say a can of cat food has a moisture content of 80 percent, meaning it contains only 20 percent actual food (dry matter) and 80 percent water. If 1.25 percent of that dry matter is, say, phosphorus, the addition of water means the food will be described by the manufacturer as only 0.25 percent phosphorus. Thus, relying on the as-fed data would result in feeding a food far higher in phosphorus than desired if you were looking to feed a cat with chronic kidney disease (and relying on the guaranteed analysis wouldn't give you accurate numbers to begin with). And comparing that data to another food’s would be meaningless if the second food had different moisture content. Determining the percentage of calories from protein, fat, and carbohydrates is yet another formula, one even more involved. So there's a lot of fun with math in evaluating the food. For cat food, this chart (from a veterinarian) is several years old, but contains a lot of information.

Oh, I don't believe this! The Raiders are finally going to the playoffs, and our QB goes down.
  5. I didn't see the episode, but maybe the (poorly-communicated) issue with her celiac disease was that, given she has to cook almost all her meals since it's difficult to eat out/order in and truly be secure there's no "hidden" harmful ingredients, cross-contamination, etc., a kitchen with ample work and storage space was very important to her?
  6. I, too, want to extend my greetings and gratitude to all of you intelligent, informed, passionate, and eloquent people on this Politics forum who have reminded me every day that wise discourse can, indeed, still be found on the internet. To those of you who will be celebrating Christmas this weekend, I wish you a merry one. To whose of you who will be spending it with difficult family members, well, I wish you a well-stocked liquor cabinet, dessert tray, medicine cabinet, or [insert coping mechanism of choice here]. To those for whom this is just another weekend, I wish you a good one. To combine Soft Kitty and Christmas, here is a picture of my cat Riley, checking out the little tabletop tree I opted for on her first Christmas with me (she's estimated to be about six years old, came with a host of issues, is now merely skittish rather than a scaredy-cat, but I figured a giant indoor tree would be a bit much to ask of her at this point, especially since she was just getting used to the fireplace). In these trying times, may you all have moments that put a similar look on your face.
  7. Well, Verba and Verbily were pretty good clues. I've read one theory on why it's so common for people to screw up names that should be simple, that people don't actually process all the letters they're looking at - they glance at the name as a whole, and if it looks like something that's more familiar to them than the name, that's how they perceive it. So, they see the E and two Ms and perceive it as Emma. Or they see Em-y and perceive Emily. It would make sense, because there's no way a shit ton of people are truly reading the letters E-m-m-y and thinking they're pronounced Emma or Emily.
  8. It sounds like the issue isn't with spelling, but with pronunciation -- people look at Emmy, and, even though the award should make it familiar even though it's an uncommon name, instead say Emma or Emily.
  9. Sylva didn't know how to use a pressure cooker, either, at least according to the pTV story about the episode (I wasn't paying full attention, so there's a lot I missed).
  10. What comes after the part you quoted is quite telling:
  11. The guy who looks like Seth Rogen was a good pick to go, based on this challenge and previous performances (which, I know, they say don't count, but come on), but I was hoping this Brooke/Emily collaboration would be the scene for Brooke's "I wish I'd never come back" scene from the season promos, because I knew she was safe under the circumstances, and now that means her potential elimination is still to come.
  12. As I understand the reviews - of a movie I'd have never gone to see in the theatre as I'm not a sci-fi fan, and will now also decline to watch once it hits television because of the offensive premise -

Well, congrats, Eagles -- you made it more difficult for the Giants to enter the playoffs ... and allowed the Cowboys to clinch. Yee haw? I will need to see some additional angles on the roughing the passer (against NY) call that changed things around in the fourth quarter, because from what I saw in real time and one slow-mo replay before having to leave the room that was bullshit -- the Giants defender hit him less than a second after he released the ball; he was going for the sack and there was no time to pull back. That Wentz landed on his noggin was just too bad; that doesn't make it a penalty.
  14. I usually wind up muttering at the TV, "You're pretty much the worst of the good food!" when those Blue Buffalo commercials air. There was an issue with its ingredient sourcing, and even assuming everything is on the up and up there, its cat food is way too high in fat; all companies making "good" cat food (very low carb, moderate fat, grain free, protein from animals rather than plants, whole muscle and organ meat rather than byproducts, etc.) use more fat than protein to replace the carbs since fat is cheaper, but Blue Buffalo just goes crazy with the fat. Don't go on about mimicking an animal's natural diet (via all that wild ancestor stuff) and then do a shitty job of it! Nature's Variety, Wellness, Tiki, Merrick, and others all make better food, but don't have commercials. It's a shame the one higher-quality pet food manufacturer that has a widespread advertising campaign opted for a tone that turns most people off. Because, while pet nutrition is becoming better understood, there are still a lot of people out there who don't have the information and would be both eager and able to provide better food if they learned what they should be looking for. Blue Buffalo could have been basically a combination PSA/advertisement. It could have even made the point that while the food costs more per can, cats eat less (protein keeps them filling full; the carbs and fillers burn off and they're hungry again) so the actual increase to your monthly cat food bill isn't as much as it seems just by looking at the price difference between two cans. Something educational. Something cute - all the "junk food" ads have adorable animals doing cute or silly things, and Blue Buffalo has a bunch of owners staring at data on an easel. That would work a lot better than what it opted for.
  15. A few days ago, someone mentioned that TCM Remembers for 2016 was out, but wasn't yet posted on the station's website. I just finally had a chance to go look, and it's up now.

  20. I don't like tofu, and I'm always having the "yes, it does have a taste" argument with people who ask how I can dislike it when it doesn't taste like anything. Of course it tastes like something! Yes, it picks up other flavors depending on what it's cooked with, but so does everything.

Oh, racism is still at play in the discrepancy -- Wilson is the "right kind" of black man, while Newton isn't.
