I was with a friend and her husband once and she expressed some fear about succumbing to dementia/Alzheimer's as she got older and having to be in a nursing home, etc. Her husband put his arm around her and said he'd always be there for her and would never let that happen. Then: "I can say that because you wouldn't know the difference."

I'm okay with overall rankings being taken into consideration since the people who have performed worst overall are the ones who are gone. It can kind of rankle if a good artist is sent home for one bad tattoo. Past winners who were never in the bottom: Shane O'Neill (season 1), Hollywood Hamilton (season 3). Winners who've had bad days: Steve Tefft (1 time), Jason Dunn (3 times), Scott Marshall (1 time), Steve Tefft (2 times), Dave Kruseman (3 times), Anthony Michaels (1 time). Haven't been in the bottom yet this season: Eric, Gian, Sketchy, Kelly

Remember the amount of shit Geraldine Ferraro got thrown at her in '84 when she was on the ticket as VP? She was pilloried. I really dislike charges of flip-flopping directed at politicians in either party. People are allowed to change their minds! Being a politician is supposed to involve hearing all sides of an argument, widening one's horizons, and encouraging change. I wouldn't vote for anyone who remains entrenched in ideas they originally espoused 20+ years ago.

Donald John Trump: 2016 President-Elect
zxy556575 replied to Notwisconsin's topic in Current Events & Politics
I'm a little surprised that more lewd comments haven't been released, or more accusers come forward. On the other hand, I can't blame any women he's groped for staying silent because it wouldn't just be putting themselves on blast like with Tiger Woods -- it's the genuine fear that Trump would come after them, in court, online, in speeches, and even with their physical safety. I have to give journalists a bit of a break on the accusations of not standing up to Trump when he's a guest on or calls into their shows, because he simply doesn't allow it. He repeats his lies and doubles down when challenged. He will not admit any wrongdoing or make a single concession in any argument, and it all becomes pointless. Imagined grievances, sure. Like the scary "others" who are taking "our" jobs and overrunning the borders to kill us. I don't for a second believe any Republicans who say they're voting for Trump only because they despise HRC. They would vote for Trump regardless of which Democrat he was running against. Ken Bone has said he's undecided because he doesn't want to see hard-won equal rights dismantled under Trump but feels that Trump would benefit him economically. HOW, EXACTLY?! I haven't see anyone ask him for specifics. -
This was all sorts of bad for me -- the focus on weight to the exclusion of jokes, the soliloquies to the camera, the giggly shrugs about the youngest daughter's behavior, the toilet Dad "gag" (for real). It came off as mean-spirited to me, not ironic or sarcastically wry. Agreed. Katie's two friends are thin. A single physical trait is not enough on which to build a sitcom. I'll see how the next episode goes, but I'm not optimistic.

Gia didn't bother me but I'm not sorry to see her go. The grrl power clique is annoying because they're so biased they can't even see that a tattoo is bad. It's not even that they won't admit it; they genuinely think their interpretation is right. Boneface's portfolio has a lot of stuff that looks the same as tonight's soldier -- dark and detailed but hard to read. Seems to be his trademark way of packing in the ink. I thought the big-ass tattoo was kind of cute and not nearly as bad as the judges made it out to be. Maybe my judgment is impaired from, as Peck said, the constant parade of jacked up work on pinup day.

The Real O'Neals - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The Real O'Neals
Great episode! The show didn't lose a step over the break and has maybe even gotten a little bit winkier, which is fine with me. Even throwaway lines like Aunt Jodi being invited to model for the mid-end women's boutique and Kenny alerting all the gays to dial it back make me laugh. I'm also enjoying Eileen and VP Murray's lust -- of all the fabrics in all the world ... -
It's not perfect and insurance companies being allowed to drop out is a concern, but I have a Marketplace health plan (with a $32 premium after subsidies) and would previously have been completely uninsurable due to pre-existing conditions. I am VERY grateful to have been given this option. I'll be forced to start Medicare next month and my healthcare costs will increase from around $100/month on Marketplace to $400/month. I understand some of the critiques about HRC and agree she can be robotic and is too much of a Beltway insider. I was personally angry about her VP choice because I really hoped she would have gone against the grain of conventional thinking and galvanized her campaign with a vibrant choice. I've also had to make my peace with her as a political strategist, willing to bend with the prevailing wind on many issues. BUT. I also believe she genuinely has pure motives for seeking the job, in that she wants to effect (her version of) positive change. She isn't in it solely for the ego boost. On one of the unending "interview with Trump supporter" news pieces, a 60-ish woman in the Midwest said, "I'm voting the conservative ticket. In this case it's that asshole Trump." Okay. That I can at least understand.

Jimmy Kimmel Live - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to David T. Cole's topic in Jimmy Kimmel Live
The interview with Ken Bone was fun to watch, mostly because Ken himself came off very well. I don't think Jimmy was exaggerating his love or simply jumping on the social media Bone-wagon, because he has a history of falling in love with You Tube "regular Joe" personalities and having them on the show. -

That is so disorienting! Particularly in our regular grocery stores because we generally have locations memorized. On the plus side, I can now make my grocery lists online and include the locations/aisle numbers, allowing me to whip around the store without doubling back. Anything to shorten the trip! Stupid grocery shopping. Some people enjoy it but I'm not one. -
This lengthy Facebook post went viral last June, but is perhaps worth re-posting -- a defense of Hillary by Michael Arnovitz. He suggests that misogyny is what underlies the hatred directed at HRC. A couple of excerpts: "Compare for example the treatment Hillary is getting due to her private email “scandal” to that of General David Petraeus. Hillary has been accused of hosting a personal email server that “might” have made classified documents less secure, even though the documents in question were not classified as secret at the time she received and/or sent them. In order for Clinton to have committed a criminal act, she would have had to knowingly and willfully mishandle material that was classified at the time she did so. After months of investigation no one has accused her of doing that, and it doesn’t appear as if anyone will. General Petraeus on the other hand, while he was Director of the CIA, knowingly gave a journalist, who was also his mistress, a series of black books which according to the Justice Department contained, “classified information regarding the identities of covert officers, war strategy, intelligence capabilities and mechanisms, diplomatic discussions quotes and deliberative discussions from high level National Security Council meetings and [Petraeus’] discussions with the president of the United States of America.” Petraeus followed that up by lying to numerous government officials, including FBI agents, about what he had done. And let's not forget that according to the Uniform Code of Military Justice, adultery is itself a court-martial offense. None of this is in dispute. Petraeus admitted to all of it. Petraeus’ violations were significantly more egregious than anything Clinton is even remotely accused of. Meanwhile even after pleading guilty to his crimes Petraeus continued to be the recipient of fawning sentiments from conservatives. Senator John McCain stated that, “All of us in life make mistakes and the situation now, I hope, can be put behind him…” Politico quoted a former military officer who worked with Petraeus as calling the entire situation “silly”. Prominent Republicans have already made it clear that they would call him back to work in the highest levels of government if they win the Presidency. And some are still attempting to convince him to seek the Presidency himself." ... "Before he ran for President in 2007, Rudy Giuliani was making about $700,000 a month in speaking fees with an average of $270k per speech. It’s estimated that in the 5 years before his run he earned as much as $40 million in speaking fees. Nobody cared, no accusations of impropriety were made, and there was almost no media interest. So why did Giuliani get a pass, while Hillary stands accused of inherent corruption for making less money doing the same thing?"

A Case Of The Mondays: Vent Your Work Spleen Here
zxy556575 replied to potatoradio's topic in Everything Else
I love that! I've been called "sir" before, by people approaching from the rear. Short haircut but still. The flowered J.C. Penney knit top should give you a clue. I have a 4" scar on my back from having a lipoma removed. If a health care person or massage therapist happens to ask, I always say it was from a knife fight in a Tijuana bar. -

Ha! Most horns are very anemic these days. It is peeve-ly. -
Are we supposed to believe there was a deliberate police cover-up in this case? Because the semen found in the victim not matching any of the suspects would seem to be pretty strong exculpatory evidence for sexual assault. And our little team managed to easily recreate the timeline in a few hours to completely exonerate 2 of the 3. Did the original defense team do zero work on the case? It's going to get rote pretty quickly if every case the team examines turns out to be flawed.

This monologue? -- "I am an exceptional vet and any client will be lucky to have me." Paraphrased. The woman didn't even get matched but she sure didn't let it affect her self-regard. She keeps saying she wants to teach, but most instructors in professional programs have some work experience in their fields. It's not like law students graduate and immediately become faculty. I felt like calling the clinic where she ended up and asking how she and her bad attitude worked out for them. I like seeing all the various types of surgery on Animal ER. I try not to blame owners for delaying bringing in their animals, or not noticing a problem, but that hen was messed up. The girl was very concerned and willing to pay for the best treatment, but dang. That wound seemed hard to miss for days.

Ruby totally needs to be shown having a more active role! In my head, she and Ferg are already handling all the regular lawbreakers -- traffic accidents, petty theft, drunk and disorderly, noise complaints, etc. -- while Walt and Vic conduct their personal vendetta investigations. You'd think the search for a permanent 3rd deputy would be more urgent since Walt is out of the office and ignoring his job 90% of the time.

I've always wondered why the miscellaneous celebrity threads are under Everything Else TV when they're not TV-related. (Okay, fine. Always wondered = makes my organizational skin itch.) -

One of the great things about information being available at the tap of a finger is that I no longer have to call a store or restaurant or government office to ask if they're open. Which makes it all the more aggravating when businesses can't be bothered to provide the correct information online. UPDATE YOUR HOURS OF OPERATION, FOOLS! Drove to a restaurant on Saturday at 5:45 am that supposedly opened at 5:30 am but it was closed. Same thing last week for an urgent care center that said open 7 days a week but turns out that's 7 days except Sundays. Ditto for the CVS that changed from 24 hours to a midnight closing (although they eventually updated their website.) -
Well, certainly a high level police inspector like Gibson can't be expected to secure her documents. It's not like she's living in a hotel room accessible by anyone else.

WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE?! Walking slowly or not, you don't run your fucking cart into somebody's heels and not apologize! Then do it again! I'm glad you spoke up @shapeshifter, but still. What an ass. -
Late Night With Seth Meyers - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Words's topic in Late Night With Seth Meyers
I was curious and looked up the NY Times article that was referenced in the "conservative perspective" skit. It's about how the prevalence of left-leaning late night shows might negatively affect Hillary and Democrats in general. The phrase "Seth Meyers’s class-clown liberalism" is the only time he's mentioned in the piece. -

When is local news not a peeve? Beyond that, all network coverage around here has been preempted since Thursday afternoon and, as always, there is not nearly enough to talk about for 24 hours straight. The local anchors and correspondents have less experience and are even worse at it than dedicated national news networks. Some of the coverage is amusing, so there's that. But if people are sitting at home with power watching TV, I'd say they're pretty much just looky-lous. Regular programming hasn't yet resumed so we're currently getting all the "Look! Tree branches are down!" stories. -
I didn't get it either, sorry. I took it as a reminder from Henry to Walt of their shared history, but beyond that the note was perhaps deliberately inscrutable to the audience. A continuing puzzle for next season? It's interesting to compare the "greedy" businessmen on the show -- Nighthorse vs Barlow Connally and Tucker Baggett. Jacob definitely wants to turn a profit and building a casino on the rez can be interpreted by some as bad for the tribe, but I think we've also seen that he has an altruistic side and does care about his culture and people. Even a straightforward crook like Malachi shows some vestiges of caring. On the other hand, the two white businessmen are altogether corrupt and venal, Barlow going so far as to murder his son in the name of profit. That frankly makes them less interesting to me, while Nighthorse remains intriguing as a character. He's both good and bad, as are we all, but I'm along for the ride to see which side he ultimately falls out on.

I'm in Florida and all network TV has been preempted since yesterday in favor of emergency storm coverage. This leads to such things as breaking local "news" of a shot of a blue plastic tarp secured over a stack of lumber that had come untied at the bottom and was now ... fluttering in the wind. Also a breathless reporter standing in the middle of a street nervously telling us that we had "just missed" a car driving down the street that had veered close to where she was standing! In the street! Riveting stuff.
