TDS 3.0: Season Two Talk
zxy556575 replied to formerlyfreedom's topic in The Daily Show With Trevor Noah (2015-2022)
It's ironic that the disaffected black millennials say they can't get behind Hillary's platform, but are still gung ho for Obama, when the most frequent criticism by supporters is that he's let them down by not fulfilling his promises/being ineffectual. (Of course, the real reason the they don't support Hillary is that she doesn't reflect themselves back at them.) -

Well, liberals used to be called commie pinkos, but now that Russia has ostensibly free elections and a capitalist economy, it's super cool to admire them! Russia's fondness for retribution and invading other countries is also very Trumpian. If The Donald says Putin is awesome, it must be true. -
I was surprised at how much I didn't want John to leave -- not because John is very likable but because I cared even a little bit about this dumb show. The food dissection episode is usually enjoyable. I'm not sure I'd be able to taste the difference between green tomatoes and tomatillos either, although I imagine red onion vs white would be ... obvious?

Yay for productivity! Fingers crossed the new assistant doesn't show up in the work spleen topic in a couple of months. :)

The Real O'Neals - General Discussion
zxy556575 replied to Meredith Quill's topic in The Real O'Neals
I like Eileen and VP Murray -- Clive is a fun character, but I'm also grateful for any sub-plots that aren't about Kenny being gay because that becomes too one-note for me. The RA was great, and as with most characters on the show, he hit just the right notes of understanding, caring, and being funny. (I looked him up and he was played by Abraham Lim. His IMDB credits start in 2013 but I haven't seen him in anything before. Nice job here, though.) -
"There will be no jury of the peers." Pfft. Then leave those excess mouths back in the house or tell them to shut it. I guess I assumed the photos in the online galleries and that we see magnified on the show were taken a few weeks later? I never really thought it through, but that would mean the judges are seeing something slightly different on the day. The earlier seasons had the canvases accompany their artists during judging to show the piece in person.

I was really enjoying the series but was quite disappointed by the finale. The various plot lines just sort of collapsed with a small hiss of air, including the court case. I hated how mean Billy was to Brittany. He showed zero compassion or understanding for the bind she was in, and he knew damned well she was depressed and beat down. Patty didn't have a history of friendship with Brittany, so I blame her less. Arguing for jury nullification is a breech of ethics for attorneys. Maybe in Billy's head he thought he skirted that in his closing, but I didn't. Still mad about how Marva was treated and left to sweat in the storage locker. Just not young, slim, or cute enough for his misogynistic majesty Billy, I guess. I wonder if Maria Bello saw the entire script before she signed on, because that was one thankless, nothing role and character who only existed to react to others. Even in the dim light, that was an impressive prosthetic (?) penis on William Hurt. Are we supposed to think that Billy drowned himself? The dog should have dragged him out of the water. He fed you for years!

I'm enjoying it so far, although there's a definite sense of dread watching as Eldon's life spins away from him. I really don't like the low-pitched raspy tone Laurie has decided to use for Eldon. The guy's feeling burned out and ineffective at work and beat down in his personal life -- I GET IT. Doesn't mean he can't speak normally.

My county in Florida keeps signatures on file and compares those to the signatures on the outside of the ballot envelopes: "When your ballot comes into our office, your signature on the envelope is compared to that in our system. If the two are not similar, the canvassing board determines if your vote will count or not." -
That seemed odd to me, too. Plenty of canvases have quit before and the judges have been critical of the artists because of it, but it was more along the lines of: you should have been able to calm them down. They seemed to think this time that nobody could have handled Kelly's tattoo, which obviously is wrong because the canvas did sit through it. The second day's tattoo wasn't necessarily going to be the same level of detail again. How long does the pain from a new tattoo last, anyway?

Have we heard anything about Rufus' or Wyatt's home life? When Wyatt lost his wife I guess he also lost all family, in-laws, friends, co-workers, and neighbors who might wonder where the hell he is. And Rufus exists in a vacuum. I don't even know why Lucy keeps trying to go home when Garcia seems to making a new jump every day or so. If the show wants us to see how Lucy is coping with the jarring changes in her personal life, then take a week or so between jumps to show us! It's annoying that she trudges home, acts bizarrely to people close to her, then mysteriously rushes off to work again for history emergencies.

Has there been more disagreement among the judges this season than there usually is? Peck and Nunez still seem to be biased for their team members even without teams. I haven't looked at the close-up photos yet but thought the "Family" tat was fine as far as lettering goes. It's never one of my favorite designs because making the letters legible usually takes a back seat to making them fancy. Mike left without a tantrum, which I applaud. I'd get a tattoo from him any day. Nice to see Ryan get another win, but overall I thought the quality was good on all the tattoos. It's getting tight in there. Next week looks like some kind of melee, with Kelly tearing up defending herself.

This is my favorite of the new Fall shows, but my minor complaint is Atwell's acting. Watching Hugh Laurie in House, I believed he was a functioning addict. I don't feel the same about Hayes; she comes off as too together and smart, in an upper class boarding school way, to be someone who has supposedly hit bottom. She also didn't strike the right note of spite and meanness in the early episodes; to me she seemed like the wholesome girl next door tossing off petty insults she read in a slam book. I do think she has sexual chemistry with Conner, though.

I loved this a lot. I was kind of expecting/dreading a creepy thriller, but this was an awesome character study, even when we didn't even fully know one of the characters. I knew the series had been renewed for a second season but until the final episode, I couldn't imagine how it would be carried on. Then it all fell into place. I don't exactly mind the love triangle of the sheriff and his wives, but hope it isn't the sole focus going forward. James Hayes as the sheriff was a new delight to me.

I'm currently on episode 7. Thornton is superb, let's just get that out of the way. We've seen his down-at-the-heels LA noirish character many times before -- yeah, yeah, we get it -- but still. Thornton makes him compulsively sympathetic and watchable even when delivering sometimes hacky dialog. As viewers we saw the conspiracy against Billy being put in place so nothing was a mystery, but the fun was seeing him ducking and punching back. The show isn't fronting, from the title on down, that this is anything but an underdog redemption story. OF COURSE Bill's favorite movie is Hoosiers. The supporting characters, including the dog, are fulfilling their minimum daily requirement of comedy and quirky heart. I especially love realtor/attorney Patty, who could easily have been an annoying throwaway part. William Hurt has fully settled into his old man creepiness (OMG the fucking clicker!). The daughter sucked. I couldn't believe she was pissed at her dad after that crooked traffic stop when he was obviously being rousted, and she and continued to think the worst of him at every turn. I thought this review brought up a good point highlighting the skills someone with David Kelley's TV expertise brings to a streaming series: LA Times: "At its best, Goliath suggests the creative possibilities that arise when writers steeped in the broadcast television tradition are liberated to tell heavily serialized, character-driven, morally complicated stories without the arbitrary limitations imposed by networks." I compared it in my head to Amazon's other new Woody Allen series, which seemed to mistakenly approach the task as making a 6-hour movie, and failed because of it. I just wish Billy would put his convertible top up overnight in the parking lot! I do enjoy the randomness of his sleep apnea. Is is possible they made Billy cruel and thoughtless to Marva on purpose to show how much of a jerk he is? She did excellent work for him and he was very dismissive.

The Durrells In Corfu - General Discussion

“It's all your fault, Mother,' said Larry austerely; 'you shouldn't have brought us up to be so selfish.' 'I like that!' exclaimed Mother. 'I never did anything of the sort!' 'Well, we didn't get as selfish as this without some guidance,' said Larry.” ― My Family and Other Animals -
Jeffrey Donovan (Burn Notice) stars as a failed magician managing a chain of psychic reading storefronts who starts to experience visions after being hit on the head. Ten episodes streaming on Hulu on December 7.

I'm interested in the relationships as well, but truly, at this point in my life I am so bored by sex scenes. I know it's a main plot point and the reason Lukas and Philip have more than one secret to keep, but ... I get it, already. They're hot for each other. Similarly, I'm hep to the fact that this is the stereotypical small town with choked emotions and a bleak outlook, and don't need to be beat over the head with the washed-out, muted gray cinematography. I liked Helen's uppity deputy who provides the sense of humor that she's lacking. While I don't really care about whatever it is that drove her to a rural town, I'm resigned to having to hear about it. The family scenes of her and Gil Bellows at least have the foster parents aspect to make it a little different from the norm. I'm not sure yet if they know Philip is gay? Despite the negatives, I did enjoy it. The story is a solid B, which is enough to keep me watching.

It's Jim in the books, but she did call him Archie.

The Durrells In Corfu - General Discussion

I'm such a fan of Gerald's books that the series is a little off in that "not how it was described" way, but hopefully I can let that go and enjoy this as a separate entity. Although Gerald lampooned his family mercilessly, he always portrayed them with deep affection and good humor, and it looks like the series will carry that through. -
Pet Peeves: Aka Things That Make You Go "Gah!"

I think most (?) people are persnickety about certain things, like I always set the TV volume on a multiple of 5 and all drawers must be kept closed. I'm also very particular about my computer interface and browser preferences. But there's no word for those little quirks and at the time time, I'm completely laissez faire about hundreds of other things. I need to be more aware of joking about having OCD or ADHD, etc. because it can be disrespectful or diminishing to others, so I appreciate the reminder. -

Trump said it himself during the primaries: "The system is rigged against me. Unless I win, then it's correct." -
Because they're all liars and they ... have secrets? I suspect everyone, especially the sister and father. And brother and best friend. Does the show expect me to believe in Eric's innocence? Not sure I do.

Don't forget his professional and businesslike 4000+ lawsuits! I'd really like to hear from someone like Cuban or Bloomberg for a perspective on what number of lawsuits their businesses are typically party to. There was another question about the "troubling" Republican platform that allowed three responses. ;) -

It got a survey in the mail from the local Democratics. There were questions about the progressive platform, actions to help middle class families, the DNC's election strategy, etc. But this one made me grimace in painful recognition that this is actually where we find ourselves: Which aspect of Donald Trump's candidacy do you find most disturbing? His dangerous and hateful campaign rhetoric His erratic temperament and judgment His pledge to repeal the Affordable Care Act His reckless foreign policy positions His pledge to appoint conservative justices to the Supreme Court His admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin His disregard for the U.S. Constitution and religious freedoms His views on women's reproductive freedom His pledge to "rip up" the Paris Accord on climate change Other The biggest dilemma is that you can only select one! Which would you choose? I waffled between disregard for the constitution and reckless foreign policy but went with the latter.
