I don't think Kate is lazy and I don't think anyone else here has said that, either. I do think she is unrealistic, at least in part, because her father shielded her and taught her that she didn't have to worry about taking care of herself, she wasn't like everyone else. She is now 41 years old, and, for her entire adult life, she has relied on others to provide her with support in the form of housing and upkeep. She lived with her mother while working as a waitress, then, she went to work for Kevin. In the early days of the show, we saw she had a very nice apartment even though he'd quit his show and no longer needed her to work and she seemingly had no urgency to try to find another job. Eventually, she drifted into being a part-time assistant to a working woman which lasted about a week. Next, she decided to be a professional singer even though she had absolutely no experience or training. As anyone with any common sense would realize, that was not a viable option and she quit trying as soon as it got hard. Once she married Toby, she finished her college degree, but, until she got the gig at the school, which is only part time and pays very poorly, she didn't work at all, even when she had no kids. it's not that Kate is lazy, it is that she is unrealistic and has some fairy tale notion that, as long as she is happy, she can continue to live an upper class lifestyle while doing nothing to pay the bills. Her parents and her brother and her husband have all enabled her in thinking that; but I don't know many 41 year old women who have never, ever had to work a full time job to support themselves and pay the bills. At least she seems to be sticking with the idea of continuing to be a teacher's assistant which is a baby step forward for her; but it still won't pay the bills and is not the sort of career a woman with 2 small kids should consider unless part of the plan is to let someone else pay for all those little extras like food and shelter and clothing. I'm waiting for her to announce that she now wants to be a cowboy or an astronaut.

When I was in high school, we lived near the bus garage and were, therefore, one of the first stops on the route. The bus picked us up at 6 AM since homeroom was at 7:30 (the district had a bus shortage, so we started early). My dad drove us nearly every day, because of it. We had to take the bus home and the hour or so it took was no joke, it would've been even worse if we were younger. My niece and nephew lived less than a mile from their school, but there were areas with no sidewalks, so they took the bus or got a ride, it really wasn't safe to walk as the road was fairly busy. Based on the lines of cars waiting to drop off kids at the grade school in my neighborhood every morning, I think a lot of parents give the kids a ride rather than putting them on the bus. If Jill's got the time, I think it's fine if she drives her kids. When I was a kid, I had some of my best conversations with my dad on the way to school.

Chris Sullivan wore padding when he first appeared on the show, so he didn't lose weight, he just stopped wearing the padding. Presumably, it was always planned for Toby to lose weight.

Kate got a job, albeit a crappy, poorly paid one, in LA. I doubt the emphasis on a woman's appearance is any less there than it is in SF. From what we've seen, Kate's attitude is her biggest barrier to gainful employment. She just doesn't see the necessity of earning a living, even if the job isn't so great. That, combined with her overall negative attitude, is the issue for her. If it is, you would think that one or both of his parents would've set him straight. That he still thinks his accident was the cause of the divorce decades later makes me think that one or both of his parents reinforced this narrative which is a really sh**ty thing to do to their kid. I think Kate said she worked in the diner for 10 years. In which case, how is it that she didn't even earn enough credits in all that time for an associate's degree from community college? It wasn't the job, it was her lack of motivation and willingness to let others support her well into adulthood that got in the way of her education. Let's face it, she is a 41 year old woman who just recently figured out what she wants to be when she grows up and what she wants to be is someone who doesn't have to pay her own way but can work just for fun.

Carlin and Evan: But Mostly Carlin!

A quick sorting of the merch according to sizes or styles is also going to go a long way to encourage sales. If a customer has to get on their knees and randomly rifle through a slew of bins in hopes of finding something they like in their size; they are not going to be able to find as much as if it was somewhat sorted for them. Even the big discount clothing outlets like Ross do some sorting to give people the opportunity to spend more money in less time. -

It also appears he wasn't alone when he died, Someone told 911 that he was having chest pain, so he was still alive when they called. If he was with friends, one would hope that they would've been completely honest with the EMT's and told them what they knew about his drug use when they arrived so they could administer Narcan, etc. Or, if he was still conscious, that he would've told them himself. An eyewitness account of drug use given to the police is more credible than just finding the drugs in the room. -

I think that the difference is that they all died in the US where the police don't release all the information the moment they uncover it. They stay mum on the cause of death until the coroner has performed an autopsy, all of the tissue samples have been evaluated and all test results are returned. Then the coroner issues a formal report and the police don't have anything to do with it unless there is a criminal investigation. Columbia seems to not have such rules. -
Yes, I think Toby was approaching things from the point of view that they both wanted to prioritize the marriage; Kate has different priorities and the marriage is not at the top of her list.

Remember, he died in Columbia, not the US. I expect that the rules governing the police and dissemination of information are not so strict there and that reporters don't necessarily verify their information before publishing. Preliminary toxicology on blood samples can be done pretty quickly, in an hour or two. However, in the case of a death, tissue samples are also obtained and the blood results are verified and that takes weeks. They could've drawn blood at the scene and tested it. Here in the US, those results would not be released to the public, though. They would wait for an autopsy and confirmation of the testing which takes weeks or even months. -

Well, he apparently died in his hotel room, so it wasn't a plane crash. From what I've heard, he complained of chest pain, the EMS was called and he suffered a cardiac arrest and couldn't be revived. The police indicate they are suspecting an OD. A reporter in Columbia wrote that there were at least 10 different drugs including marijuana, cocaine and heroin in his room. Hawkins apparently has a history of heroin use. He OD'd about 20 years ago and was in a coma for a week. -
If there was more to Toby's plan, we didn't hear it and neither did Kate. He also immediately changed direction and let Kate decide the plan when she objected. As noted above, I don't think Kate is being so much roasted as so many of us are seeing her feelings, wants and desires as unattainable under the current conditions of their life and marriage. As noted above, they live in a million dollar house, travel frequently from coast to coast, Kate seems to have an extensive and very nice wardrobe (in real life, most of her clothes would probably be custom made and cost more than off the rack versions in regular sizes)., their son attends music classes at a private school which, I presume, Kate expects him to attend full time soon. Yet, Kate seems to think that a full-time job as a teacher's aide making barely more than minimum wage is going to be enough to allow Toby to take a big pay cut, even though they'd be lucky if Kate's salary covered daycare for the kids., The fact that Kate hasn't worked full time in many years and hasn't worked at all since marrying until very recently, yet, expects to maintain their lifestyle in LA even if Toby takes a pay cut, even if he hates his job in LA makes me wonder about her mental health. How does she think they will survive? She is obviously opposed to downsizing and selling the house and we know that she is not even trying to find a job that pays a little better. Kate's version of their lives is a pretty fairy tale that is not sustainable. I don't think she needs to be on board with Toby 100%, but, she needs to listen to his POV and give some thought to what is really the best thing for their family. From what I saw, she went to SF ostensibly to take a look at the city but, in reality, her mind was completely closed to anything other than what she wanted. Toby is being realistic, Kate is not.

Jeremiah & Hannah: Done Counting and Done Caring

He is just about the same height as Ivy which makes me think it is probably Gideon. Henry is significantly taller than Ivy. -
Asked a divorce lawyer friend; he said that, typically, in the case of a marriage that lasted 10 years or less, the spouse with the lower income could expect to receive alimony for about half the duration of the marriage. Toby and Kate have been married around 4 years, I think, so, if she gets alimony, it's going to be for about 2 years. The idea is to keep them both at the same general standard of living for a transitional period. He also said that the fact they both live in California where the cost of living is very high will factor into it, but maybe not in Kate's favor since Toby has essentially provided 100% of their income during the marriage and she could have worked but chose not to for most of it. I would expect it was Toby who paid her tuition when she returned to college since Kate had no income; had she worked to put him through school, she'd have a better case for support. As it is, her marriage enabled her to obtain a college degree which presumably makes her more employable than before.

No surprise there, they seemed to be pissed that Baker had an injured shoulder since mid-season. I got the impression he was out the door ASAP once the season ended. As for the Haslams, their taped remarks were as expected. It's just fine that they signed Watson says Jimmy because he asked his wife and daughter about it and they both said it was fine. Because Jimmy Haslam's wife and daughter are the final arbiters of whether a serial harrasser/assaulter of women is an asset to the team.

Kate is an able bodied woman who presumably will be be working full time, the marriage has been brief, maybe 4 years. In most cases, she would get minimal, if any, alimony. If Kate wanted to stay home with the kids until they are in school, especially in view of the fact that Jack has special needs, she might be awarded alimony until he is in school full time which is no more than a couple years. The judge will be pretty generous with child support, and I expect Toby won't begrudge his kids anything; but Kate supposedly was an independent self-supporting person when they met. I don't see Toby wanting to continue to pay her way. Maybe this is why she seemingly gets together with Mean Jerk and marries him so fast; she needs someone to cover her expenses.

As far as never seeing Baby Hailey, I think the reason she hasn't been seen much onscreen this year is COVID protocols. They use at least a couple of babies for every scene and the logistics are probably daunting. Had COVID not struck, I think she'd be more visible. On the other hand, I agree that there was no real reason for Kate and Toby to rush out and adopt a child when baby Jack wasn't even a year old. Even if he wasn't a micropreemie with lifelong special needs, it seemed rushed to me. I presume that was because the writers knew the show was only lasting 6 seasons and they needed to get it in there ASAP. I think they also thought it would be ever so cute for Kate and Kevin to both have children on the same day and, since Kevin and Madison's twins were coming, they needed to get Kate another baby pronto. I guess we should be grateful they didn't have Kate get pregnant again and risk her life and the baby's so soon after little Jack almost died.

This is true, but we've seen Kate's first move after perhaps realizing that her marriage is doomed is to try to get a full time position as a teacher's aide; which we the audience, at least, know is not going to pay enough to cover her expenses, let alone the extra child care she is going to need if she works full time. That money has to come from somewhere, and given Kate's track record, it seems as though, once again, she is expecting someone else to pay the bills so she can do what she wants rather than what needs to be done. Miguel is just one option, I think, since he's done it before and has the money; Kevin will be bankrolling her lifestyle so she can continue to dabble in her low paying 'career'. I realize this show plays fast and loose with money issues, but Kate working as a teacher's aide to support herself, including paying the mortgage on a home in LA, no less, is not even close to believable. We can pretend that Randall earned enough in bonuses while working in the stock market to be able to afford their lifestyle on a councilman's salary in Philly, including the large sum they must've lost on Beth's dance studio. Kate has worked as a waitress and as a 'gopher' for her brother. That's about it, except for the couple of episodes where she was someone else' assistant and when she failed miserably as a 'professional' singer. We were told they used their savings while Toby was unemployed, and he's only been working a few months at his new job; they cannot possibly have enough assets for Kate to think she's going to come away with a large cash settlement in the divorce.

I think most of us saw the flash forward earlier this season and we also know there are a limited number of episodes left; so I expect most of us DIDN'T expect her to change her mind about moving to San Fran and aren't all that surprised that she's calling Philip and not her husband, either.

Josh & Anna Smuggar: A Series of Unfortunate Events
Rootbeer replied to maraleia's topic in Counting On
I think that, as long as the judge agrees that the reason for the postponement is valid; it can be postponed indefinitely. After all, things happen, people get sick or need surgeries or lawyers quit and new ones need to become familiar with the case. The judge is not going to agree to a delay without good reason, however, and Josh' attorneys know that and also know better than to risk ticking him off by repeatedly asking for delays. Since Josh is going to be in jail until he's sentenced, no matter when that is, there is no advantage to him in dragging this out. -
Maybe while in law school, he needed a place to study at home where he could close the door. Not sure that he still needs one now or that he couldn't use a room that could double for guests.

As noted above, there are state laws governing blood work. In some states, you need a pratitioner's order (doctor, physician assistant or nurse practitioner). The main advantage of Theranos' machine that I could see was that it was small and compact, and if it had worked, it could have been used in situations, such as in underserved areas. For example, people who live in isolated areas could go to the doctor and get the blood work right there rather than having to drive miles and miles to a lab. Of course, they probably drove miles and miles to get to the doctor in the first place. The small quantity of blood needed would make it easier to run large numbers of tests on a single patient, but most people don't need 100 tests at a time. I do some medical volunteer work in underdeveloped countries and I could see some use for it there, but, even so, it's value would be limited, especially without practitioners to order the proper tests and interpret the results. Even with a doctor's order, insurance companies can refuse to cover testing. They tell people stuff like, 'if your doctor feels it is necessary, we will pay for it'. They forget to mention that they sometimes disagree that a test is necessary, in which case, they won't pay, no matter what the doctor thinks. Try to get an insurance company to approve an MRI sometime, I've purchased cars with less paperwork.

Yes, Rebecca had a sister in the earlier seasons. No idea what happened to her in the interim.

And isn't it the same for Kate? He is supposed to accommodate her life, there is no compromise she's willing to make, either. She likes her minimum wage job and won't consider leaving it. She says she wants to be near her mother, but we know her mother is moving thousands of miles away in the near future. She says she doesn't want her son to have to adapt to new circumstances, but she is planning to work full time and place him in day care which will certainly be a big change and doesn't seem concerned about that. Kate's attitude isn't so much that she's happy, but that she isn't happy and it is up to him to try to make her happy. That never works. She seems to expect him to be like her father, always willing to do things her way, to make sure she gets what she wants.
