  1. Second season airing now. It's still a delightful show. Sad to see it end.
  2. Some of the cast attended the Cup Finale and a reporter interviewed them having no idea they were from "Ted Lasso". They guys even introduces Cristo Fernandez to the reporter as Dani Rojas. Phil Dunster (Jamie) was with them so I'm assuming he's still on the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QgaTykbyTXY
  3. The female detective's demeanor tracked to me because there are things in the scene (trying to not be spoiler here) where the detectives have already have insight that makes them believe Anna is an unreliable narrator.
  4. The latter. Nomad Bob said in an interview that he was given a script to memorize but he couldn't because his memory is so poor but he told the director about losing his son and she asked if he would share it so that entire scene where he talks to the crowd was off-the cuff. Me neither. I know a few people who live off the grid and a few more who would do it if they didn't have to give up their creature comforts. The"domesticated" life isn't for everyone. Or it is until it isn't like with David Straitharn's character. I loved the film and felt it very evocative. Will it be remembered in any real way 20 years from now? No, but so many modern Oscar winning film aren't. It's a very in the moment and of the moment film.

    U.K. TV

Binged two new Sky series: the comedy BLOODS starring Jane Horrocks and Samson Kayo and the period piece drama DOMINA. Since DOMINA covers Livia Drusilla's rise the cast is split between the younger version of the characters and the older ones. The younger Liiva and Gaius are played by Nadia Parkes and Tom Glynn-Carney and the older versions played by Kasia Smutniak and Matthew McNulty. Some people who are sticklers may hate DOMINA because there are some very modern takes on phrases that sometimes takes one out of the story, but it's compelling. BLOODS, to me, is hysterical. I hate that there are only six episodes. It's one of the few ensemble comedies where every character is a win. No wasted character in the bunch.
  6. Tracey Lett's adaptation of A.J Finn's novel of the same name, directed by Joe Wright (DARKEST HOUR, ATONEMEN) and starring Amy Adams. One of few remaining Fox films that Disney acquired, the film has been delayed for various reasons since 2019 before being sold to Netflix. It was a good Saturday afternoon watch and I'm someone who feels that there is still a place in film for mid-budget adult dramas in a field crowded by comic book movies, but I wish this film was sharper. Wright did an outstanding job with the camera work and creating a almost Hitchcock-ian atmosphere, but I think the weak link was Adams. I think the film would have worked better if she and Julianne Moore had swapped places.
  7. The Battle of Versailles episode was one of the better ones. I loved when the series focused on the creations and the teamwork. Very disappointed how little Joel Schumacher featured in this. I assumed he would feature more. Halston's family should not be disappointed about not being consulted and calling it an inaccurate depiction. The book that inspired the mini was filled with interviews with Halston's friends and colleagues; they have a better insight on Halston than his family who he seemingly kept distant from. And even if he was close to his family, it's highly unlikely they would know the minutiae of his life. Surely he's not telling them of his exploits at Studio 54 or with Victor Hugo.
  8. It was a brisk watch but could have easily been 3 episodes instead of 5. There's only so much egotism and self-sabotaging one can take before it becomes too repetitive. The performances were good and the recreations were great, but I came out of it learning nothing more of Halston than I already knew.
  9. It is currently airing on BBC One and is dividing fans on Twitter. The reviews have been often brutal. I found the three-parter incredible and enchanting and touching. What I feared would be a dry mini was instead filled with vibrancy. Emily Watson did an amazing job directing and adapting the novel.

    Nobody (2021)

I can see this being unofficially a part of the John Wick universe, seeing as that there is a proposed upcoming series about "The Continental". Same. It took me looking on IMDB to confirm it was Rza in that role and saw that he was credited as Harry Mansell. As much as I love the John Wick films I preferred "Nobody" as it's a trim 90 minutes and doesn't really get too deep into the weeds with exposition. It's like 2007's "Shoot 'em Up" starring Clive Owen and Monica Bellucci. Just mad action for 90 minutes.
  11. IMO character development is not really the point of any Christopher Nolan film. If there is an emotional beat to be found it's thanks in part to the actors. For example in "Inception" with Cobb's heartfelt pleading to Mal in the hotel room, that was Leonardo DiCaprio's suggestion. I was surprised by the father/child relationships in "Interstellar" only to realize that Jonathan Nolan wrote the script and when he decided not to make it, he gave it over to Chris who made some changes to it (chiefly making the core relationship be between a father and daughter rather than a father and his son). All that to say is that I find Nolan's films sterile, which I don't mind because his concepts are so thrilling. I just think he doesn't deal in character studies very well.
  12. So happy the series is returning and at closer to a half-hour instead of 15 minutes. The hiatus has been interminable. My only disappointed is that Augustus Prew is unlikely to pop up as he was overseas filming Amazon's "Lord of the Rings" series.
  13. Though I think it should have been given a chance to see what a second series would bring, I think a one-and-done is sufficient. Netflix is so odd. Per recent articles the show was a success, much like last year's "White Lines" (at least, globally) and it was axed as well. https://www.thewrap.com/the-irregulars-canceled-netflix-one-season/
  14. While no official word on a third season has been announced, but WarnerMedia and Epix are in talks to share PENNYWORTH if it is renewed. Having PENNYWORTH on HBO Max will be fantastic. It took moving to HBO Max from DC Universe Online for more people to discover DOOM PATROL. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/pennyworth-hbo-max-epix-may-share-dc-comics-drama Sources say Epix and HBO Max will likely end up sharing Pennyworth, with the streamer getting the first window to season three. Epix would air the third season of the Jack Bannon starrer at a later date. HBO Max would be home to the first two seasons of Pennyworth, with Epix also having the right to air repeats of the drama about the former British SAS soldier who goes to work for a young billionaire named Thomas Wayne (Ben Aldridge). Reps for Epix, Warners and HBO Max declined comment as a deal has not yet been closed. Sources say Epix executives had yet to make a decision on the future of Pennyworth, which wrapped its 10-episode second season April 11, when execs from HBO Max reached out with the offer to take over the series as an original.
  15. I went in completely blind, as I do with films nowadays as the trailers give away too much, and knowing Nolan's work I knew it would demand my full attention. I completely got it on first viewing. It's like Robert Pattinson said Nolan was surprised Pattinson understood the script after first reading it. But also like Pattinson, when I revisited it that's when the trouble started. It's like what Clemence Posey's scientist character says in the film, "Don't try to understand it- feel it." And that what worked for me. If I ignored all the big concepts of inversion and time, and just focused on a story of a man trying to stop destruction and helping out a woman in an abusive relationship, it was easier on me.
  16. I thought no one could be more annoying than Fern and this season proved me wrong. But once again I'm faced with a Harrow hiatus.
  17. It sounds promising and I can see the humour of a Guy and Alan buddy film series, but who really wanted a Green Lantern series focused on Guy and Alan? John Stewart, Hal Jordan, I can see. I can't reason that WB wanted to save John and Hal for films because WB no longer has those edicts about keeping the film'verse and tv'verse separate (as evident by Ezra Miller's cameo in CW'S The Flash).
  18. There's a time and a place for everything and Ms. Mock knows that arena was not the place to air out TPTB or her relationship with Angel Bismark Curiel. She has been interviewed by many publications leading up to the final season and if she wanted to take her justified salary complaints public, she should have did so in one of those interviews, versus starting the night of the premiere on the wrong foot. It was to be a night of celebration. Hell, it would have been slightly better if she said those things about the salary and writing at the after-party. But there is no justification for making Angel stand up while she discussed their relationship. Just all around wild.
  19. Helmed by Italian director Stefano Sollima (Gomorrah), adapted from the Tom Clancy novel by frequent video game writer Will Staples and the great Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, Sicario, Hell or High Water) and starring Michael B. Jordan, Jodie Turner-Smith and Jamie Bell. Originally made at Paramount but they sold it to Amazon Prime where the film bowed on Friday. I haven't read the source material, so I was able to weigh the film on its own merits. Great actioner, with fantastic fight sequences (one very reminiscent of a big showdown in Charlize Theron's ATOMIC BLONDE) and definitely sets up the universe that exists in the novels. As what tends to be the case for a long time now, the trailer gives too much away so I'm glad I went into it blind. Highly recommended.
  20. Doesn't hold upon rewatch but when I saw it in the theaters I laughed throughout (once I got past being aghast at what the kids were saying).
  21. More casting for S3 - members of the Sisterhood of Dada (known as the Brotherhood of Dada in the comics).https://deadline.com/2021/04/doom-patrol-hbo-max-five-recur-season-3-1234742555/
  22. I'm hoping the series gets a renewal. It almost feels like Heller and Cannon decided to lean heavily on comics level craziness in case series two was the end of the road. I expected Martha to lose the child so for her to actually deliver it and for it to be a girl was a nice surprise. Did not think we'd get a redemption arc for Gully or for him to turn into some skewed version of Mister Freeze. Also did not think the person who does the end credits would mess up James Purefoy's name (though it would be cool if he changed his name to Jame).
  23. Then how did they get surprised? Why are they walking in alleys? Why are they not armed? It stands to reason that they got out of their respective fields and were living quiet pedestrian lives. There's no need to look over their shoulders. Even walking through an alley named Crime Alley - it's just a night out with the family who is to think the worse could happen. I liken it to a soldier doing two tours of duty and returning home unscathed only to end up being killed by a stay bullet.
  24. That's the best and worst thing about their story. For decades audiences have only cared about Thomas and Martha through the extent that their deaths had on Bruce - didn't really know them as characters enough to care (though for Thomas DC's Flashpoint arc has changed all of that) about them. But now, thanks to their portrayals on Pennyworth when I think about the murders of Thomas and Martha I think of these two funny, charming badasses and it makes their future deaths that much more tragic and Alfred stepping up as a guardian that much more poignant.
  25. Airs on AMC tonight in the U.S. Buckle up, this show is a trip and a half in the best way.
