No comments yet on last Friday's Dateline? Well I'll be first and say that this one seems to be another story where there could have been more background. They should have gotten into the woman's drug use (and what kinds of drugs they were). And what was she hoping to accomplish by bumping off her husband in the first place? SOMEBODY had to have money - Carlsbad is NOT a cheap place to live. Just lots of questions on this story. And to go off topic - there was just a bizarre murder case in New Jersey. A family of four was murdered in a very upscale area - the husband was shot multiple times and found on the lawn; the wife and two kids were stabbed and the house was set on fire. The really odd thing was that the dead guy's brother was arrested after his house was set on fire with his family still in it (they escaped). The brother is saying he isn't guilty of either setting any house on fire or murder, but this is probably gonna be an interesting case. A future Dateline in the making for sure!

Count me three for the incest angle.

Off topic here, but did you just read that they made arrests in that case in Ohio of a few years back where an entire family (except for the babies and very young child) were killed? At the time it was rumored to be drug related but with the arrests it was apparently child custody related. Sounds as if it could make a future good Dateline episode.

I still love the new agent, and still can't stand Pride. Seems like both Chris and Gregorio are being put on kind of a back burner. And I know I've mentioned it in prior seasons, but is the hair/costume budget for ALL of these NCIS shows in the range of $100 per episode? Gregorio always looks like a hot mess (and did the actress gain some weight; especially around the middle?) - seems she wears the same 3 tops throughout the entire series (kind of like the LL Cool J character on NCIS LA). And her hair and makeup always looks as if she just rolled out of bed. The original NCIS seems to have the same problem with it's characters. I don't expect the actresses to look as if they stepped out of Vogue or a makeup ad, but c'mon.

I'm almost done with this show. I really liked the new supervisor woman and hope that she stays and Scott Bakula goes. It's gotten to the point where he sucks the life out of the show every time he's on screen.

I think the CIA guy is the guy who was handling the woman who Vance was going to ask out. I normally don't 'ship characters in these shows getting together, but I actually LIKE the idea of Torres and Bishop together. I've come to like both of them and they seem to have some kind of playful chemistry. I also like Kaysie but I hope they keep the weirdness in check. Don't know why these NCIS shows always have to make the tech people so over the top. I couldn't stand Abby so I find Kaysie an improvement - just keep her sorta geeky but REAL.

I enjoyed this episode - and agreed - Jubal needs to be let out of the "boiler room" more often (and WHY does he wear a gun while barking out orders in said room?). And yeah, interesting that the teenage girl in the upscale house at the beginning was pretty much dressed like a hooker and the victims were teenage hookers. Was somebody trying to make a point there? And I have got to say it - I really hate the background music on these Dick Wolf produced shows. Its all the same grim sounding synthesizer music which I find annoying as hell. In some ways it reminds me of the old soap operas which always had somebody on an organ which blared ominous chords when some drama was about to go down (those of a certain age will know what I'm talking about).

Dateline was the first thing I thought of when this story hit the news. And when the formally "loving husband and father"'s lawyer wanted DNA from the childrens's throats, I said to my companion, "I'll bet the scumbag is going to say the wife murdered the kids" and again, I was right. And if anybody believes that story I have a nice bridge in Brooklyn for sale.

You have to wonder if there are any health inspectors working in the towns these restaurants are in. It's making me paranoid about eating out! Between the mouse in the toaster and all the spoiled food and cross contamination this show sheds light on it really makes you wonder what goes on in most restaurants. And in agreement that this episode was hurting. You just knew from the get-go that the makeover was going to be a "Fail". Between the owner's obvious displeasure with Gordon being there and the interior renovation and the one daughter's shitty attitude, you could see there wasn't going to be any quick fixes at this place. And after the publicity of seeing that foul kitchen and spoiled food from pre Gordon, I wouldn't be shocked if business tanks even more since they didn't keep Gordon's menu. People are just going to assume that it's back to the same old thing, canned cheese sauce and all. Maybe they show these episodes as a way of showing the viewers Win Some; Lose Some.

So Matt was an "old lover"? Not surprised - I thought there was more to that story than that they were just drinking buddies. And from watching Dateline I'm amazed about how many sociopathic people are out there, and woe to you if you are unlucky enough to marry one!

I have to agree that I thought the figure in the hoodie was a woman. I agree with JudyObscure on this one. And I also hope that the ex-wife is eventually arrested and convicted, but I wouldn't bet the rent on it. Watched a Dateline last night about a woman doctor in Pittsburgh who was murdered by cyanide. What a shame that was - she had such a promising future and was apparently a really excellent doctor. I had to just shake my head at her husband's lawyers. The husband purchased cyanide through his job (university lab), his fingerprint was on the bottle, the police found his laptop with searches about cyanide poisoning in humans.... blah, blah, blah, and his lawyers kept saying that he was such an incredibly intelligent man and he couldn't possibly do something so stupid and obvious. I was there screaming at the tv - OCCAMS RAZOR, and if it walks like a duck.... and apparently the jury thought the same. Mr. ph.D Super Genius was found guilty pretty quickly. And I wonder how those lawyers can sleep at night....

Sigh. I called it less than 10 minutes into this Dateline about the guy found dead in the garage. When they started going into all the stuff about how he loved and doted SO MUCH on his young daughter, I turned to my companion and said, "This is going to be another one of these child custody things and I'll bet either the kid's mother or current husband was behind this". He laughed at me and said, "Oh, you think you know it all". Guess I do! There was a terrible murder/suicide a few days ago here in New York. And it apparently revolved around child custody issues. In this case, the mother had primary custody and took the child to live with her in Holland. She had to come back to NY upon a judge's order so the child could see his father. The father killed his ex-wife, the little boy, his current wife and himself. No winners in that one.

I never thought that Bright felt anything sexual towards Trewlove. I always got the feeling that he was fatherly and protective of her. Kind of sad that as a society we see so many interactions between an older man and a young woman as sexual and/or predatory. I'm sad to miss seeing the scene that was cut. Anybody want to place bets that we haven't seen the last of those 2 Bully Boy cops we saw a few episodes ago? I wouldn't even doubt if they had something to do with Fancy's death - either directly (killing him themselves) or indirectly (by alerting the gangsters that he was watching them). I'm going guess that they are corrupt and in on the drug smuggling operation and also set the other cops (in the truck crash) up to be murdered. And if it isn't the cops we originally saw, I still bet next season's story line is going to involve some sort of police corruption and being in on the drug trade.

What a great season 1 ending! I loved no cliffhangers and that Blanca and her family were happy at the end. Loved that Patty and Angel gave Stan his walking papers! And love that Pray Tell has a new guy and some happiness. Laughed at Electra as the hostess at Indochine, though cringed at how she treated the "Bridge and Tunnel" folks who wanted to dine without a reservation. I know that every drama needs some bad guys to add - well - drama, but why did the Ferocity girls have to be such... BITCHES? You'd think that in some way people who were part of that scene would feel that they were all in it together, but I guess human nature being what it is..... Anyway, I'm so happy to hear that the show will be back - can't wait!

I like this show because I find the cast very appealing. The sad thing is that this appealing cast is dealing with lousy scripts written by people who are out of a TV Writing 101 class. I'm one of the few Luddites who still doesn't have Netflix or Amazon Prime but I'm rethinking that. Most of network tv is so pathetic that it only seems to be on the air to sell luxury cars and all sorts of medication.

I agree with everything Good Queen Jane has said. And I've said this on the Elementary thread - I really don't want babies/kids on my crime shows. I understand that this show seems to be trying to get the point across that a gay couple are just "normal folks" with the same wants/needs/desires as straight folks, but no, just no, kids - PLEASE! And as a personal aside - on tv it seems to be okay to be straight/gay/bi/trans - it seems the one thing it really isn't okay to be is a person (especially a woman - gasp!) - who does not want children. Maybe this is the last frontier?

Oh show - PLEASE don't go there with a baby! And PLEASE don't go there with Joan and Sherlock either. I know The Mentalist did that in the final season (and they actually did it well) but its really nice to have a man and woman have a close friendship and working relationship without it turning into something else. And especially not Mommy, Daddy, and Baby - yuck a million times. And the actress playing Kelsey - for those of you who see the Liberty Mutual Car Ins commercials - is she the "Brad" girl in that commercial? I kind of think so but my SO wasn't so sure.

Gotta say I'm enjoying this show and getting very caught up in what happens to the characters. Yeah, the acting can be so-so, there is an air of semi-cheesiness about the production, but there is also heart in this show which so much tv lacks. And late 80s Gay NYC and the sub-culture of the Balls is not exactly a time and place where many tv shows are going to go and kudos to FX for airing such a show, especially in our current political climate. Previous posters have mentioned that they don't like Electra's acting (or should I say the actress playing Electra). I take it as a stylistic choice as much of Gay/Drag/Camp thing was influenced by actresses in women's films of the 30s/40s/50s. There was a certain over-the-topness in some of these movies and this became even more exgerated when translated into Drag/Camp. I think that Electra is especially a product of that time (she doesn't seem to be a young person) and her persona is created as being this larger-than-life women's movie femme fatale. EVERYTHING about Electra is artifice and it's a point of pride that she does artifice well. On the other hand Blanca is more "real". She is more real in her feelings and more real as a person in general. It seems to me that personal "realness" is something that is a theme of this show. I'm still kind of puzzled in what Jersey Guy is doing with Angel. He claims not to be gay but Angel still has male parts and that doesn't seem to be an issue. In a past episode, Jersey Guy also was bemoaning the falseness of his life but so far is seems to me that he is the one keeping himself in the false life. His wife (so far) doesnt strike me as a woman who really wants one of the Masters of the Universe as a husband (and by the 80s, having a dishwasher was well below with keeping up with the Jones) and it actually seems to me that she'd rather have a husband who was home with her and the kids rather than a workaholic. Jersey Guy has a "real" life but it seems that he is the one who wants what is "unreal" - the job in the shark's world of Trump 80s New York, and a mistress who looks like a beautiful woman but is really something else. On more shallow notes - I don't like Jersey Guy's wife's hair - it's not right. Can't 100% put my finger on it but no New Jersey young matron would have had that hairdo then. Hair was bigger - she wouldn't have looked like Cyndi Lauper but trust me, her hair would have still been bigger. They get the 80s decor in the Jersey home and Angel's apartment down pretty well - all the way down to the peach couch and the wall paper in the house (pale with the pastel swipes of color). Another thing (are we supposed to notice?) how bare the walls of the house are. Is this supposed to represent the sterility of the suburbs, the lack of art or artistic desire in the household, or just that the set designers ran out of money for more props? The mentions of "Show World" ! Ha. Back in the early 90s, Manhattan had this very lewd cable access channel J. There was this show on called the Robyn Byrd show and it largely featured NYC exotic dancers; most of whom it seemed finished their shift and then came on the show. I remember being rather um, interested, when they'd feature a dancer who would come in in costume - 100% beautiful woman; start striping down, upper clothes off - woman - lower clothes off - man. Apparently most of these dancers were in the earlier stages of transitioning and hadn't as of yet gone for the full monty operation. I saw "Paris Is Burning" back when if first came out (don't remember much about it - hey, it's been almost 30 years!). I really hope that Angel isn't going to meet a bad end at the hands of Jersey Boy. She should have been more realistic about knowing the score of being the chick on the side to a married guy with young kids. He ain't gonna be showing up to be eating her Christmas cookies. I'm just afraid she is going to start making herself a pain in the ass to where his fantasy life is in danger and he does something about it. They guy just seems so not right. I really like Angel and hope she will come out all right. And lastly - I totally loved The House of Evengelista Christmas Dinner. A family gathered together -- no fancy china or dinning room table - just people who care about each other and making the best of the circumstance.

Another vote of agreement on the soap opera aspects. For a bio about a guy who was burning to paint and create, it seems to be more about the number of women he bedded. And despite the money which was obviously spent on this series, it seems to have a certain, I don't know, cheesiness about it. I'll watch it through to the end but it really leaves me wanting to go pick up a good book about Picasso and that maybe gives me more of the real man.

Another NO vote for bringing a kid onto this show. And as a childless woman (now well past menopause), I also resent how TV seems to have a problem portraying happy professional women living their lives without either having children or longing for them. Yeez, look at what happened with Law & Order SVU when they gave Olivia an adopted kid. As some said up thread, it was nice seeing Watson appearing happy with her life without either a man or kids. Maybe that is considered too much of a freak show in our current version of America. Frankly, I think when shows that start out without kids start bringing them in, it's the Jump The Shark moment.

Sigh. Anybody ever see the movie "Death and the Maiden"? Similar story but done better.

Just before watching this show, my companion and I watched an excellent British show called "Unforgotten". Then we watched this.... talk about yet another hour of my life that I felt was stolen from me by really bad tv. The actress playing Rollins got to chew the scenery, the guy playing the father was totally believable, and the part where Esther was killed by Rollins' bullet - again, please don't insult my intelligence. And do the writers of this stupidity have a CLUE about how the NYC police dept operates? Funny enough, just because I know how this show operates, after Ester's father showed up and she went off with him, I said to my SO - this girl is gonna wind up dead. Just how it works in L&O SVU land.

Another vote for Abby surviving and Reeves buying the farm. Maybe Abby will go and work for his women's shelter as a way to honor him.

I was under the impression that the wife did both murders. She was suffering from post-partum psychosis and both murders happened not long after the birth of a child. What I'm not sure about was the deal with the well-off son (the one who drove the BMW). He seemed very sadistic towards her - anger because she brought grief onto the family and his "perfect" life or was it implied that he was a prick all along?
